MK Party MP David Skosana Ambushed on N4 — Gunmen Forced Weapons Through Car Window
A tense incident reportedly occurred on the N4 on Monday night after armed men allegedly targeted MK Party Member of Parliament David Skosana in what investigators are treating as a possible assassination attempt.
Skosana was reportedly travelling alone in an unmarked white Volkswagen Polo when the attackers allegedly drove alongside his vehicle and pointed firearms through the rear windows. The incident happened shortly after the lawmaker had dismissed his security escort for the evening.
Although no shots were fired, the situation reportedly became dangerous when the gunmen allegedly instructed Skosana to stop and pull over. He is said to have refused and instead accelerated away from the attackers until he reached a place of safety.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed the precise location along the N4 where the incident occurred or revealed how many people were allegedly involved. Investigators are also examining whether the timing of the attack, following the departure of Skosana’s security personnel, was accidental or deliberate.
South African Police Service spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo confirmed that a case had been registered and said detectives were following leads. The Hawks were also reportedly notified because of Skosana’s position as a member of Parliament.
Police have not disclosed information about possible suspects or a suspected motive, as investigations remain ongoing.
The incident comes against the backdrop of concerns over political violence in parts of South Africa, particularly along the N4 corridor. The route, which links Pretoria with areas toward Mozambique, has previously been associated with violent attacks involving political figures.
Witnesses at a nearby filling station reportedly described seeing a visibly distressed man arrive shortly after 10pm and ask to use a telephone, although they could not confirm whether the person was Skosana.
No arrests had reportedly been made at the time of the report, while the vehicle allegedly used by the attackers had not been recovered. Skosana had also not publicly provided a detailed account of the incident.
Investigators are expected to determine how the attackers knew about the lawmaker’s movements and whether his decision to travel without his security escort was connected to the alleged ambush.
