Prepare for Very Heavy Rains in the Next 24 Hours If You Live in the Following Areas
Residents in several parts of Kenya have been warned to prepare for rainfall over the next 24 hours, with the Kenya Meteorological Department forecasting showers and thunderstorms across 23 counties.
The daily forecast issued on Tuesday, October 6, covers weather conditions up to 9pm on Wednesday, October 7. The rains are expected to affect parts of western, central, eastern and coastal Kenya, with some areas likely to experience showers at different times of the day.
The counties listed in the forecast are Mandera, Wajir, Marsabit, Isiolo, Trans Nzoia, Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Kisumu, Siaya, Kericho, Kisii, Nakuru, Nyandarua, Meru, Nyeri, Embu, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi and Lamu.
In northeastern Kenya, Mandera and Wajir are expected to receive moderate showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening. Marsabit is forecast to receive moderate rainfall in the morning, particularly around Moyale, with additional showers possible later.
Isiolo and Garissa could receive light showers during the forecast period.
Several counties in western Kenya are also expected to experience wet conditions. Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Siaya, Kisumu and Trans Nzoia may receive light showers and thunderstorms overnight, with rainfall activity expected to return in the afternoon together with parts of Vihiga.
Afternoon showers are also forecast in Kericho, Nakuru, Bomet, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Baringo, West Pokot and Samburu.
However, some areas are expected to remain largely dry, including Turkana, Homa Bay, Migori, Narok, Kajiado and Uasin Gishu, where sunny intervals are forecast.
In central Kenya, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Embu, Kirinyaga, Murang’a and Nyeri are expected to remain partly cloudy overnight before receiving light morning rains and afternoon showers.
Nyandarua is forecast to record some of the country’s lowest temperatures, ranging between 10°C and 23°C. Nairobi is expected to have a cloudy morning, with a possibility of light rain before sunny intervals later in the day.
Along the Coast, residents of Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi and Lamu should expect partly cloudy conditions, sunny intervals and occasional light showers. Mombasa is forecast to record temperatures between 24°C and 30°C, while Lamu could reach 31°C.
The department has also warned of strong winds in parts of northern Kenya. Turkana, Samburu and Marsabit are expected to experience strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots, equivalent to about 12.5 metres per second.
Temperature differences will also be significant across the country. Turkana is expected to be the hottest county, with temperatures reaching 36°C, followed by Mandera at 35°C, Garissa at 34°C and Wajir at 33°C.
The latest forecast comes after some areas already recorded significant rainfall. In the 24 hours to 9am on Tuesday, Mandera recorded 40mm of rain, classified by the department as heavy rainfall. Garissa recorded about 21mm, Wajir approximately 11mm, Ruruma-Mikomani around 10mm, while Moyale and Mombasa each received roughly 7mm.
Residents in the affected areas are therefore expected to remain alert as the forecast rainfall and strong winds continue through Wednesday evening.
