The crash happened about five kilometres outside Louis Trichardt in the Makhado Municipality, Vhembe District.

According to SAPS, a police vehicle from Tshilwavhusiku Police Station was transporting three awaiting-trial prisoners to a correctional facility in Thohoyandou when it collided head-on with a white Mahindra bakkie belonging to Tshisimani Water.

Emergency services initially certified five people dead at the scene.

A third SAPS member, who had sustained serious injuries in the crash and was transported to a local hospital, later succumbed to their injuries, bringing the confirmed death toll to six.

The deceased comprise three SAPS members, one male and two females, two male awaiting-trial prisoners and the male driver of the civilian vehicle.

One of the awaiting-trial prisoners survived the crash but sustained serious injuries. The prisoner was transported to hospital under police guard.

The circumstances surrounding the collision are being investigated, with a case of culpable homicide opened at Makhado Police Station.

SAPS units, senior management and various emergency services attended the scene.

Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety Nakedi Kekana said the provincial government was deeply saddened by the crash and extended condolences to the families of those killed.

The MEC’s initial statement said five people had died at the scene, with two others injured. The subsequent SAPS update confirmed that one of the seriously injured SAPS members later died.

The identities of the deceased have not been released, pending the completion of the necessary procedures and notification of their next of kin.

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Petrus Scheepers also expressed condolences to the bereaved families, colleagues and loved ones.

“We extend our sincere condolences to all the bereaved families, colleagues and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident. We also wish the injured a speedy recovery,” said Scheepers.

The R524 has since been reopened, while investigations and clearing operations continue.

Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution and avoid reckless driving, speeding and the use of unroadworthy vehicles.
