There Is A Rumour That Maybe Eventually Atiku Will Step Down,So That It’ll Be Obi Versus BAT -Ayoade

Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Ibadan, John Ayoade, has discussed possible political developments ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, including speculation about the future of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition.

Ayoade made the remarks during a recent interview on Edmund Obilo on Monday, October 5, 2026, while examining the political calculations and possible alliances that could shape the next presidential contest.

The professor noted that several possibilities were being discussed within political circles as major contenders and their supporters continued to position themselves ahead of the election.

According to Ayoade, “There is a rumour that maybe eventually Atiku will step down, so that it will be Obi versus Tinubu.”

He presented the possibility specifically as a rumour, explaining that a direct contest between Peter Obi and President Bola Tinubu could emerge if Atiku eventually chose to withdraw from the presidential race.

Ayoade also examined the influence of political power brokers, noting that individuals do not necessarily need to occupy prominent government positions to have an impact on political decisions. He argued that such actors can influence political arrangements and affect the direction of political developments.

The professor urged attention to the interests and calculations surrounding political arrangements, particularly where influential figures seek to shape the field of candidates or determine who remains in the race.

He further observed that the political landscape ahead of 2027 remained fluid, with rumours, strategic calculations and realignments expected to continue as political parties and their leading figures prepare for the election.

Ayoade said the various possibilities being discussed demonstrate that the eventual shape of the presidential contest has not been fully determined and could depend on decisions made by major political actors in the months ahead.

The professor’s comments come amid increasing political discussions surrounding Tinubu, Obi, Atiku and other potential contenders as preparations for the 2027 election gather momentum.
