Bad News for Sifuna as Top Linda Mwananchi Leader Withdraws Support After Launch of New Party
Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has taken a different political position after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna unveiled a new political party, setting the stage for fresh questions about the future direction of the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Sifuna and his allies officially unveiled The Equitable Party on Sunday, October 4, 2026, as part of efforts to establish a new political vehicle capable of carrying their agenda into the next election. Several opposition leaders attended the launch and expressed support for the senator’s political ambitions.
However, Amisi has indicated that he will not support Sifuna’s newly launched party as his preferred political vehicle. His position is notable because he has previously been closely associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement and has repeatedly spoken in support of Sifuna’s presidential ambitions.
In September, Amisi described Sifuna as his political project and said he would campaign for him regardless of the party he joined. He also previously called on opposition parties to rally behind Sifuna as a joint presidential candidate, arguing that the Nairobi senator could appeal to younger voters.
Amisi has also maintained that he played an important role in the formation of the Linda Mwananchi movement. He has urged supporters to consider his People’s Renaissance Movement, arguing that the youth-focused political project should retain its original direction.
The latest disagreement could therefore expose differences over strategy, party structures and the best route for challenging President William Ruto in 2027.
For Sifuna, building a strong political vehicle will require bringing together leaders with different ambitions and political bases. Amisi’s position adds another layer to that challenge as opposition leaders continue positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 contest.
