You Are Fake Freedom Fighters, Real Freedom Fighters Don’t Fear Opposition, Why Fear Us? Ssenyonyi Tells Off Museveni’s Government

NUP spokesperson and Leader of Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi has challenged President Yoweri Museveni and his government to explain why they fear political opponents if they consider themselves genuine freedom fighters. Ssenyonyi argued that people who fought for freedom should be able to tolerate criticism, alternative political views and political competition.

“If you say you’re a freedom fighter, true freedom fighters are always okay with somebody opposing you. If you don’t accept criticism, you are fake freedom fighters,” Ssenyonyi said.

Ssenyonyi made the remarks at the National Unity Platform headquarters in Kavule, Kampala, during an event where the party welcomed back political prisoners, including NUP Deputy President for Buganda Muwanga Kivumbi, who had secured bail after spending months in detention. The occasion was used by the opposition party to renew its call for political freedoms and respect for the rule of law.

The Nakawa West MP said Uganda’s history was shaped by people who challenged established political systems because they believed the country could be governed differently. He questioned why Ugandans should now be made to fear expressing political opinions that differ from those of the government.

“Our forefathers rejected colonial rule because they had a different school of thought,” Ssenyonyi said, arguing that people who opposed colonial rule faced imprisonment and, in some cases, death because of the political ideas they supported.

He said the opposition should not be treated as an enemy simply because it disagrees with the government. Ssenyonyi maintained that NUP is a political party operating within the law and that its members are seeking political change through political participation rather than taking up arms.

“We are a political party. We follow the law. We are not going to pick guns and go to the bush,” he said, adding that opposition leaders should be free to question government decisions, speak about corruption and raise concerns about alleged abuses.

Ssenyonyi also called for suspects to be handled through the established justice system, rather than being subjected to unlawful treatment. “If you suspect that somebody has committed a crime, what does the law say? Arrest them, take them to police, not to a torture chamber,” he said, before insisting that the opposition would continue holding those in power accountable. “So when you do wrong, we shall keep you in check. We shall call you out,” he added.
