Former Sekhukhune United player Mokete "Shaune" Mogaila will be sentenced in November after he pleaded guilty to culpable homicide and failing to stop and help after a fatal crash in Tembisa.
The 29-year-old appeared in the Tembisa Magistrate's Court and admitted to negligently causing the October 2024 collision that killed nine-year-old Gomolemo Mavimbela and injured her mother and a 13-year-old neighbour.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole welcomed the guilty plea, securing justice for the victims.
âThe guilty plea and conviction will not only hold the accused accountable for his unlawful conduct but also spare the victims and their families the emotional burden of a lengthy trial.
âThe conviction represents an important step towards justice for the deceased child and her family.â

AfriForumâs Private Prosecution Unit, which took on the case on behalf of the victimsâ families, said it will now assist the families in preparing victim impact statements to assist the court in imposing a just sentence.
Following the ruling, Tshepo Kekana, Keo Mavimbelaâs husband, expressed relief at the development.
âAt least we are moving forward. I feel some relief that he has pleaded guilty, although it is not completely satisfying because there is still more to what happened. But we are getting somewhere. Iâm happy that we are finally reaching the end of the tunnel and there is some light.
