Tyreek Hill and other free-agent wide receivers the Chiefs should consider for the rest of the seasonKansas City Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes now knows when he can get Tyquan Thornton back after his brutal injuryThe idea of Tyreek Hill returning to the Kansas City Chiefs once felt like little more than nostalgia. Four weeks into the season, the circumstances have changed enough that a reunion now makes genuine football sense.
Kansas City lost two important receivers during Sunday’s 30-27 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Tyquan Thornton suffered a dislocated left ankle, while Rashee Rice exited with a hamstring injury after being hurt in the first quarter.
Thornton and Rice had combined for 24 receptions, 409 yards and three touchdowns through four games. Their injuries leave quarterback Patrick Mahomes suddenly short of two of his most productive targets.
At almost exactly the same time, Hill is preparing to return to football. The 32-year-old has spent months posting training footage while recovering from the dislocated left knee and multiple ligament tears, including an ACL injury, that ended his 2025 season.
“Bro 32 is not old,” Hill wrote recently. “Still prime years.”
There’s also little mystery about how some of Kansas City’s biggest stars would receive him.
Mahomes responded to one of Hill’s summer training videos with, “Keep going brotha!” Tight end Travis Kelce has publicly encouraged his former teammate, while defensive tackle Chris Jones was even more direct earlier this year. “Cheetah it’s time,” Jones wrote.
Hill has hardly discouraged the speculation. During an offseason visit to Kansas City, he posted: “KC I missed you. See you soon.” His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, indicated Monday that a decision on the veteran receiver’s future could come quickly.
“I would anticipate Tyreek potentially signing with a team over the next few days,” Rosenhaus told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Kansas City has remained among the teams in contact with Hill while monitoring his rehabilitation.
The fit goes well beyond sentiment. Hill spent his first six NFL seasons with the Chiefs, scoring 62 total touchdowns and becoming one of the league’s most dangerous deep threats alongside Mahomes.
He was also a central figure in Kansas City’s Super Bowl LIV championship before being traded to the Miami Dolphins in 2022.
He already understands head coach Andy Reid’s offense, while the return of offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy adds another familiar voice.
That could significantly reduce the adjustment period for a player trying to return in the middle of a season.
Kansas City could also offer an immediate role. The offense needs speed, separation and another reliable option against man coverage, particularly if Thornton and Rice miss significant time.
A short-term, incentive-heavy contract would give the Chiefs protection while allowing Hill to prove he can still produce after the biggest injury of his career.
The question is no longer why Kansas City would consider bringing him back. It’s whether Hill is healthy enough to make the reunion worthwhile.
