Ex-Interior CS Exposes How They Got Intelligence About Raila’s Victory Before It Was Changed

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has revealed how his camp received information indicating that Raila Odinga had won the 2022 presidential election before the official results were announced.

Matiang’i’s remarks come days after former President Uhuru Kenyatta claimed that Raila had won the 2022 election, despite President William Ruto being declared the winner by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

According to Matiang’i, agencies had given them figures showing that Raila was leading with 53.6 per cent of the vote.

“Agencies walituambia Raila ako 53.6, which means alikuwa ameshinda uchaguzi. Sasa tukangoja atangazwe,” Matiang’i said.

He explained that after receiving the information, they expected Raila to be officially declared the winner.

Matiang’i also referred to the seven-member IEBC commission, claiming that four commissioners had rejected the results while three went ahead with the announcement.

“There are seven commissioners of IEBC; wanne wamekataa hiyo results itangazwe. Wale wametangaza hiyo results ni watatu,” he stated.

His remarks have revived questions surrounding the final stages of the 2022 presidential election, particularly over the information available to different actors before the official declaration.

Ruto was eventually declared the winner with 7,176,141 votes, representing 50.49 per cent, while Raila received 6,942,930 votes, or 48.85 per cent, according to the official IEBC results.

The latest claims by Matiang’i and Uhuru have therefore brought renewed attention to the events surrounding the announcement of the 2022 presidential results as political leaders prepare for the 2027 election.
