New York City cyclist is killed after colliding with a dog in Central Park

A 71-year-old cyclist has been killed after colliding with a dog that was off its leash and ran into a road in Central Park.
The jolt sent the rider over the handlebars of his bike in the latest deadly incident on the park’s busy roads.
The unidentified man was riding north along East Drive near East 84th Street at around 8:20am on Monday when a Golden Retriever ran into his path, according to police.
The cyclist struck the dog and was thrown from his bike, suffering fatal injuries to his head and body despite wearing a helmet.
Emergency crews rushed him to New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The Golden Retriever escaped the collision without injury and its female owner remained at the scene, police said.
No charges had been announced Monday and the NYPD’s investigation remained ongoing.
The accident has once again raised concerns about safety inside America’s most famous urban park, coming just weeks after a pedestrian was fatally struck by a cyclist in the same area.
Instagram bombshell Demi Rose Mawby's new life after 'vanishing act'909 viewing now NYPD officers sealed off part of Central Park’s East Drive after a 71-year-old cyclist was killed when he collided with an off-leash dog on Monday morning The cyclist’s racing bike was left leaning against an NYPD vehicle following the fatal collision near East 84th Street in Central ParkDogs are permitted to roam off-leash in many parts of Central Park between 6am and 9am – meaning Monday’s collision occurred during designated off-leash hours, although park rules state dogs must remain leashed at all times while on its drives.
Police told Gothamist that because the dog had been in the park during permitted off-leash hours, they were not expecting enforcement action.
Police also told ABC7 they did not believe the cyclist had been speeding.
‘People are dying out here,’ one cyclist told the New York Post. ‘It’s incredibly unfortunate.’
The rider said the sight of blood on the pavement was a grim reminder of just how catastrophic a bicycle crash can become.
‘Every time you see it you know that the person who went down did not get back up the same way they went down,’ he said.
‘People don’t know what these bikes can do. They don’t know the damage they can do. They don’t know that they can be deadly. They don’t know that if you go down, you can die.’
The crash occurred steps from the Metropolitan Museum of Art at an intersection locals say has long been a source of anxiety.
The road curves as it approaches the crossing, potentially limiting visibility between cyclists and pedestrians attempting to navigate the busy section.
James Wacht, 71, who regularly visits the park, told Gothamist he had witnessed numerous close calls there.
‘I’ve seen a lot of near misses,’ he said. ‘They can’t stop on a dime, like sometimes they have to. You have a dog that darts out into the road, you’ve gotta be able to stop.’
Another regular parkgoer, David Nevins, 51, said he has repeatedly found the intersection difficult to navigate because of cyclists coming around the bend.
‘I always said there should be some type of crossing guard here like that,’ Nevins told Gothamist. ‘Pedestrians have no rights right here, and it’s a blind bend, they’re flying down there, and they don’t care.’
Others pointed the finger directly at the dog’s owner.
Joseph Albanese, who lives near Central Park, said he believed cyclists often traveled ‘entirely too fast’ through the greenspace but argued Monday’s circumstances were different.
‘But look, it was the dog owner’s fault,’ he told the Post. ‘They shouldn’t have had the dog off the leash – that was inexcusable.’
The Central Park Conservancy said it was ‘heartbroken’ by Monday’s tragedy.
‘Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and loved ones of the cyclist who lost his life,’ the organization said.
‘The Park cannot continue to serve that purpose unless all New Yorkers hold to the essential agreement of public space: know and follow the rules, and respect your fellow visitors,’ the Conservancy said.
Monday’s death follows another fatal collision in the same section of Central Park last month.
Richie O’Brien, a 41-year-old father-of-two, was walking to work when he was struck by a cyclist also near East 84th Street.
O’Brien suffered severe injuries and died days later.
Following his death, the Central Park Conservancy called for additional measures aimed at reducing the dangers faced by the millions of cyclists, runners, pedestrians and other visitors who share the park.
The proposals included a 15mph speed limit, tougher enforcement of traffic regulations and improvements to cycling infrastructure.
