Offices and residential buildings across the centre of the capital and east London were affected by the outage at around 10.30am, plunging them into darkness.

The outage also caused issues with rail travel.

The issue primarily affected the Shoreditch area, according to UK Power Networks (UKPN), and was down to a fault on an underground electricity cable.

Power was restored at 12.09pm, according to the company.

UKPN’s website states: ‘We are aware of a power cut affecting customers in the Shoreditch area.

‘We apologise for any inconvenience this is causing you. Please continue to check our website for updates.’

It is thought that 32 postcodes have been impacted today.

The power cut also impacted rail services in the capital this morning, with Great Northern having confirmed the outage had affected platform lighting at Essex Road.

As a result, services are not stopping at the station.

‘You will need to travel via Old Street or Highbury & Islington to complete your journey and allow extra time to arrive at your destination,’ the operator said on X.

At Liverpool Street, departure screens were blank following the outage, though journeys were not affected.

Meanwhile, a TfL spokesperson confirmed the power cut had impacted some traffic signals and CCTV in the affected area. TfL rail and bus services are running as normal and that traffic was not affected.

A UKPN spokesperson said: ‘We apologise for the inconvenience after a fault developed on our underground network in the Shoreditch area at 10.30am today.

‘Power supplies were interrupted to several thousand properties and our engineers worked as quickly as is safely possible to reroute electricity to those affected, in stages, until 11.08am when all were back on supply.’
