Green Anaconda Strikes Bakkie on South African Dirt Road, Leaving Mzansi Stunned

A video featuring a huge green anaconda lunging towards a bakkie on a remote dirt road in South Africa has generated significant discussion online, with viewers questioning the circumstances surrounding the apparent presence of the South American reptile in the country.

The footage was shared by South African snake education and removal platform Slangboere and recirculated on September 30, 2026. However, the same page reportedly uploaded the video earlier on September 16, meaning its latest circulation should not be taken as confirmation that the encounter occurred recently.

In the footage, which appears to have been filmed from another vehicle, the enormous snake can be seen lying alongside an unpaved road. When a bakkie drives towards and passes the reptile, the animal suddenly moves towards the vehicle, producing a dramatic moment that quickly drew attention from social media users.

Slangboere identified the animal as a green anaconda and rejected claims that the video was created with artificial intelligence. According to the page, the snake may have reacted defensively after interpreting the approaching vehicle as a potential danger.

Green anacondas originate from South America and are famous for their considerable size, muscular build and strength. They are non-venomous snakes that kill prey through constriction and are generally regarded as the heaviest snake species in the world based on body weight. Their natural habitats include swamps, wetlands, rivers and other environments with slow-moving water.

Despite the widespread reaction, key details surrounding the footage remain unclear. The exact location where the video was recorded has not been independently confirmed, while there is no verified explanation for how the anaconda came to be on a South African road.
