Angel Reese issues bold statement at WNBA leadership after historic season

Add ARY News on GoogleFollow on Google DiscoverImage Source: DFreeAAResizeWNBA star Angel Reese has once again stunned the sports world with an unapologetic statement directed at league executives about player value, pay and coverage.

A star during one of the most historic breakout seasons ever – setting rebounding records, energizing the entire league’s fan base – Reese used her platform to speak openly about the divisiveness still experienced between how players are valued and how their organizations treat them.

In doing so, she represents a new wave of professional athletes who are speaking out during the game’s most financially lucrative era.

“The most meaningful momentum for women’s sport through this moment has been the spike in WNBA viewership, tickets, and merchandise sales. But for the players responsible for that momentum to thrive, they should be investing accordingly,” wrote Reese, a forward for the Chicago Sky.

“There’s room for improvement on league operations, from travel accommodations to future health resources and fair revenue-sharing that recognizes the inherent market value athletes bring to the game.”

The athletes’ unabashed message struck a chord on Twitter, receiving praise from many who have long called for improved league standards.

Reese is speaking out at an interesting inflection point for the WNBA, whose future financial path will be influenced by negotiations over media rights and collective bargaining later this year.

By keeping those talks focused on the headlines, Reese is emphasizing the importance of their athlete-first themes and focusing the conversation on the physical health of the people who participate in the sport and the pay they deserve.

“My comments come from an interest in the future of the game, and this current group of players and future players,” Reese said.

In an exploding time for the league, Reeve’s words carry as much weight as her on-court impact. By standing tall with her on-field prowess and speaking loudly about the league and the sport she loves, Reese is helping to position her as a generational player both on and off the court, a champion of the game.

Looking ahead, the way Reese leads as a vocal professional athlete will hopefully serve as a bellwether for how the league can work towards a sustainable and equitable model for female players across the league.
