Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has nominated Mehrdad Akhlaghi as the country’s new defence minister, according to semi-official Tasnim news agency.
Akhlaghi previously served as chief operating officer of Iran’s Aerospace Industries Organization, which oversees parts of the country’s aerospace and defence industry.
He most recently held a senior executive position at Iran’s Defence Ministry.
The nomination comes after Iran’s Defence Ministry was temporarily overseen by military leaders following the death of former Defence Minister Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh at the start of the US-Israeli conflict.
Akhlaghi’s nomination will now go through Iran’s parliamentary approval process before he can formally take charge of the ministry.
