One Dead, Several Injured After Enabled Matatu Crashes Into Lorry Near Mlolongo

One person has died while several others sustained injuries after a 33-seater Enabled Shuttle matatu collided with the rear of a truck along Mombasa Road near Mlolongo on Monday, October 5.

The accident left the front section of the matatu badly damaged, particularly on the driver’s side. Images from the scene showed the extent of the damage following the collision.

The truck was transporting maize, which spilled onto a large section of the busy highway after the crash. The scattered grains added to the disruption as motorists slowed down while navigating the affected section.

Members of the public were seen at the scene attempting to assist in rescue efforts. The matatu appeared to have no passengers at the time of the crash, although several people were reportedly injured.

The accident caused a major traffic buildup along Mombasa Road, with motorists advised to consider alternative routes as efforts to clear the wreckage continued.

Motorists approaching from the JKIA area could use Airport North Road before connecting to Muhoho Road or Raila Odinga Road. They can then proceed through the Eastern Bypass to access Outering Road or Cabanas.

Drivers travelling eastbound and facing the blockage could exit at Cabanas and join Outering Road. Another option is to use U-turn points at Bunyala or South B to head back west.

The crash comes amid renewed concerns over the safety of the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, where several serious accidents have been reported in recent days.

Seventeen people were killed at Mlima Kiu in the Salama area of Kilome, while seven others sustained serious injuries in another crash. Most of those who died were women from St Mathias Mulumba Catholic Parish in Mikindani, Mombasa, who were travelling to the Subukia Shrine in Nakuru County for National Prayer Day.

Two other people later died in separate crashes along the Salama-Sultan Hamud stretch, adding to concerns over the safety of the busy highway.

The recent accidents have renewed calls for the government to fast-track the long-delayed dualling of the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has been among leaders pushing for the project, which has been delayed for several years.
