Bank of Ghana Arrests 7 in Accra Over Money Bouquets and Cakes Made With Cedi Notes
The Bank of Ghana (BoG), working with the Ghana Police Service, has arrested seven individuals in Accra for allegedly using Ghana cedi banknotes to make money bouquets and cakes for commercial purposes.
The arrests are part of an enforcement exercise by the central bank to tackle what it describes as the misuse, abuse and unlawful handling of Ghanaian currency notes and coins.
Dinah Bonzi, Head of the Statistics Office at the Currency Management Department of the Bank of Ghana, said the latest action was intended to warn individuals and businesses involved in turning banknotes into decorative items for events and celebrations.
According to the central bank, the practice of using cedi notes to make money bouquets, money cakes and similar decorations for weddings, birthdays, graduations and other occasions amounts to improper handling and abuse of the currency.
The seven suspects were arrested at different locations across Accra after allegedly engaging in the production of money bouquets and cakes using Ghana cedi notes for commercial purposes.
The Bank of Ghana said the enforcement exercise would not be limited to those directly involved in producing the items.
Individuals or businesses found to be assisting, promoting or facilitating the practice could also face arrest and prosecution.
The central bank stressed that the Ghana cedi remains the legal tender of the Republic of Ghana and must be handled appropriately.
Any form of misuse or physical abuse of banknotes and coins could result in sanctions under the law.
The arrested individuals are expected to face prosecution, with possible penalties including fines or imprisonment, depending on the outcome of the legal process and the applicable provisions of the law.
The Bank of Ghana has previously cautioned the public against several practices involving the improper handling of currency.
These include spraying money at social events, turning banknotes into bouquets and decorations, scattering or stepping on money, writing on notes, altering them and engaging in other activities that could damage or degrade the currency.
