Pakistan’s public debt rises 340% in decade to Rs86.7tn
Pakistan’s public debt increased by 340% over the past decade, rising from Rs67 trillion to Rs86.7 trillion by June 2026, according to a report by the Ministry of Finance.
The report showed that public debt stood at Rs19.7 trillion in June 2016.
By June 2026, total public debt had reached Rs86.7 trillion, including Rs59.4 trillion in domestic debt and Rs27.3 trillion in external debt.
In comparison, public debt in June 2016 comprised Rs13.6 trillion in domestic debt and Rs6.1 trillion in external debt.
According to the report, total public debt rose to Rs21.4 trillion by June 2017 and further increased to Rs24.9 trillion by June 2018.
The debt climbed to Rs32.7 trillion by June 2019 and reached Rs36.4 trillion by June 2020.
By June 2021, Pakistan’s total public debt had increased to Rs39.9 trillion, the report said.
