Stop Making Money Bouquets Or Go To Jail – Bank of Ghana Arrests 7 Girls Over Cedi Bouquets

If you love money bouquets, be careful. You can be arrested.

The Bank of Ghana, together with the Ghana Police Service, has arrested seven young women for making and displaying money bouquets and other currency decorations.

The arrests are part of a new crackdown to enforce the law on how Ghana’s national currency should be handled.

For some time now, money bouquets have become common at weddings, birthdays, graduations and funerals. People arrange cedi notes like flowers and give them as gifts. Others spray cedi notes at parties, step on them and dance on them. Many Ghanaians thought it was just fun and a way to show love.

But the Bank of Ghana says it is illegal.

According to the central bank, the cedi is legal tender and must be used only as a medium of exchange. Making money bouquets, spraying money at events, tearing, staining, writing on, or defacing cedi notes are all criminal offences.

This is backed by the Bank of Ghana Act, 2002 (Act 612) and the Currency Act, 1964 (Act 242). Under these laws, anyone found abusing the cedi can be fined or jailed.

The Bank of Ghana has warned that even using cedi notes for art, jewellery, and decorations is against the law. Businesses and social media creators who print or use images of cedi notes without permission are also breaking the law.

The Bank says it spends a lot of money to print and maintain the cedi, and defacing it makes it hard to use again.

Now, enforcement has started. The Bank says it is working with law enforcement agencies to monitor events and arrest offenders. The seven young women arrested are the first example.

So the warning is clear: That money bouquet you are planning for your friend’s wedding can land you in handcuffs. Stop spraying, stop folding cedi into bouquets. Respect the cedi or face the law.
