Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has intensified the government’s development push in Kiambu County, using the launch of the Kwaheri-Mary Magdalena Road in Thika Town Constituency to call for faster implementation of projects and greater opportunities for local residents.

Kindiki said the road project was part of a wider programme of infrastructure development being undertaken by the national government across Kiambu, arguing that improved connectivity was critical to supporting businesses, farmers and residents.

He challenged the contractor handling the project to move with speed and ensure the road is delivered within the agreed timelines.

“I will follow the contractor to ensure that this road will be completed on time,” he said.

Kindiki also called for the involvement of local residents in the project, urging the contractor to give priority to people from the area when providing employment and other opportunities associated with the construction.

Kindiki said the government was expanding its road network investments in Kiambu as part of efforts to improve transport and address congestion affecting residents and businesses.

He disclosed that the government was undertaking designs for the proposed construction of an express highway linking Thika and Kiambu, a project he said would help ease traffic congestion along the busy corridor.

The announcement comes as the government continues to highlight road infrastructure as a key component of its development agenda in the Mt Kenya region.

Kindiki has in recent weeks used his tours of the region to highlight ongoing and planned projects, including roads, markets and other economic infrastructure.

“President Ruto is doing a good job of development, and we will continue to develop other regions as well as other sectors, including agriculture,” Kindiki said.

But beyond infrastructure, the Deputy President used the Thika engagement to make a broader appeal for political restraint and national unity.

Kindiki said he would not be drawn into what he described as petty politics, insisting that his focus would remain on development and peace.

He said elders from the Mt Kenya region had instructed him to preach peace and unity, adding that he would continue engaging residents across the region with that message.

“We need to preach peace and unity. Elders have instructed me to promote peace, and I will move to all sectors,” he said.

The Deputy President also renewed the government’s warning against the manufacture and sale of poisonous alcoholic drinks.

He said a multi-agency approach would be maintained to identify and shut down businesses involved in the production and distribution of harmful alcohol.

“We will not allow anyone to sell poisonous chemicals in the name of alcohol. We will fight all of them,” he said.

Kindiki, however, distinguished between illicit and harmful drinks and legally manufactured alcohol, saying the government’s crackdown was targeting products that endanger consumers.

His warning comes amid an intensified crackdown on illicit alcohol in Kiambu, where police recently intercepted a tanker carrying 10,000 litres of suspected industrial ethanol. Three people were arrested, and samples were taken for analysis by the government chemist.

Kindiki said the government would continue pursuing those involved in the trade while supporting legitimate businesses operating within the law.
