Pantang Psychiatric Hospital’s deplorable state: National shame

Entrance to the Pantang Psychiatric Hospital
Entrance to the Pantang Psychiatric Hospital

2 minutes read

I recently visited Pantang Psychiatric Hospital, and what I witnessed was nothing short of shocking.

The hospital, meant to be a sanctuary for the mentally ill, has been reduced to a mere shell of its former self.

The infrastructure is crumbling, the walls are peeling, and the unsanitary conditions are a breeding ground for diseases.

The consulting rooms, where patients seek solace and treatment, are in a state of utter disrepair. Broken furniture, peeling paint, and a general sense of neglect pervade the atmosphere.

It’s unconscionable that vulnerable individuals, already struggling with their mental health, are forced to endure such conditions.

The road from Pantang Junction to the hospital is in a deplorable state, making it a challenge for patients, staff, and visitors to access the facility.

The hospital’s own roads are equally bad, further exacerbating the difficulties faced by those who need care.

To make matters worse, the hospital’s land has been encroached upon, further compromising the already strained facilities.

This raises serious concerns about the security and integrity of the hospital’s operations.

The Ministry of Health and relevant authorities must immediately address these egregious concerns.

Patients deserve better. We need:

• Infrastructure upgrade: Renovate facilities to ensure a safe and healthy environment.
• Road repairs: Fix the roads leading to and within the hospital to facilitate easy access.
• Protection of Hospital land: Ensure the hospital’s land is protected from encroachment and used for its intended purpose.

It’s time for the government to prioritise mental health care and invest in the well-being of its citizens. We can’t afford to neglect our most vulnerable populations any longer.

Entertainment Week Ghana team meets KOD to discuss cultural initiatives

0

In a bid to reclaim Ghana’s unique cultural narrative for December, co-founder of Entertainment Week Ghana, De Graft Oppong is urging a strategic repositioning of Detty December amid growing competition from other African nations capitalising on the festive season.

With Entertainment Week Ghana slated to launch in the first week of December 2025, Oppong envisions the event as a transformative platform that will not only redefine entertainment but also centralises Ghana as a destination hub for creativity, innovation, and cultural exchange.

Entertainment Week Ghana is designed to convene key industry stakeholders, innovators, and investors for a comprehensive exploration of digital transformation, content monetisation, and evolving entertainment business models.

Central to the initiative is a global entertainment summit featuring panel discussions led by renowned creative executives and industry experts.

Additionally, an award ceremony will honour 15 outstanding individuals whose contributions have significantly enriched the entertainment landscape across diverse disciplines.

A distinctive feature of the event will be the “Deal Room,” an exclusive forum where venture capital firms and tech-driven entrepreneurs can connect.

This initiative aims to spur investment and foster strategic partnerships by enabling selected innovators to present their ideas to a panel of investors and industry leaders.

Oppong explained that the need for such a platform emerged from the desire to empower creatives—particularly those historically overlooked—while harnessing the transformative power of technology and innovation.

“This platform was born out of the urgency to recognize and empower creatives while providing the capacity-building tools necessary for long-term success,” he stated.

With strong government support from the Ministry for Youth Development and Empowerment as well as Diaspora Affairs Ghana, Entertainment Week Ghana is well-positioned to influence the future of the creative industry.

During a meeting on Wednesday, March 19, George Opare Addo, Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, emphasised the initiative’s role in integrating technology and innovation with Ghana’s rich entertainment heritage.

Similarly, Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD), Director of Diaspora Affairs Ghana, highlighted the inclusive nature of the event, which welcomes participation from both local stakeholders and the Ghanaian diaspora.

Organised by Blacvolta Multimedia, Party Extra, and Q Bespoke, Entertainment Week Ghana is poised to offer a promising model for a more centralised and controlled Detty December.

Bright Simons responds to Dr. Matthew Prempeh’s denial of involvement in unitisation directive

0

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons, has responded to former Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s denial of involvement in the controversial unitisation directive between Springfield Exploration and Production Limited and Eni Ghana Exploration and Production Limited (ENI).

In response to a statement released by Dr. Prempeh who demanded an apology, Simons clarified that while the initial directives were issued in 2020 under the former Minister’s predecessor, Dr. Prempeh played a significant role in escalating the dispute in 2021, ultimately leading to international arbitration.

In a statement issued on February 27, 2024, Simons acknowledged that the unitisation directives were initially issued in April, October, and November 2020. However, when Dr. Prempeh assumed office as Energy Minister in March 2021, he initiated a new process that culminated in a Heads of Decision (HoD) document.

“It is true that ‘directives’ were issued by his immediate predecessor in April, October, and November 2020 in an escalatory fashion to compel unitization of the ENI-Vitol and Springfield blocks, forming the

Read his full statement below:

My response to Mr. Matthew Prempeh, former Minister of Energy

I have seen a statement from the former Energy Minister effectively washing his hands off the whole embarrassing spectacle that the forced unitisation saga has become following the current government’s decision to abort the policy.

I think that the former Minister is, unfortunately, harbouring some misapprehensions about the timeline of events leading to the arbitration. Furthermore, he has settled on his own definition of what a “directive” means, which limits his ability to reckon with his full role in this sad episode.

It is true that “directives” were issued by his immediate predecessor in April, October, and November of 2020 in escalatory fashion to compel unitisation of the Eni-Vitol and Springfield blocks and that these actions formed the genesis of the dispute.

However, I shall refer to these as preliminary directives for reasons that I will explain forthwith.

As the Arbitral Tribunal noted, following these preliminary directives in 2020, a decision was made by the political authorities at the highest level in 2021 when Mr. Prempeh came into office to suspend these preliminary directives.

A whole new process was thus began, one that he spearheaded. This new process culminated in a Heads of Decision seeking to impose final terms on the disputing parties – ENI/Vitol and Springfield. To all practical intents and purposes, this new document has to be regarded as a new directive at the time it was issued. It was a directive in the same line of dictates marked by a failure to accommodate the concerns and interests of the two private companies.

It is this substantive directive that triggered the decision by Eni and Vitol to finally resort to arbitration.

The Minister may want to absolve himself and his conduct entirely of all blame but the records of proceedings are exceedingly clear that he was the principal factor in the decision by the two international companies to take the matter outside the Ghanaian jurisdiction at the time they did in 2021.

Below are extracts from the tribunal’s findings that establish both the timeline and his involvement.

1. “At various meetings that took place between February and October 2021, the Minister of Energy displayed his personal hostility and bias against the Claimants by making repeated accusations and threats, including that the MoE would enforce unitisation irrespective of the judicial review proceedings, and that it would replace Eni as the operator of the Sankofa field.”

2. “At the 21 July 2021 meeting between the Claimants [Eni-Vitol], the President, and the MoE [Ministry or Energy], the parties decided to enter into HoD [Heads of Decision] agreeing (i) to the suspension of the Unitisation Directives; (ii) to the suspension of the Judicial Review Proceedings and Springfield’s litigation against the Claimants; and that (iii), provided conditions (i) and (ii) were met, the Claimants would negotiate a PUA with Springfield on the basis of the Claimants’ Technical Report.”

3. “On 3 August 2021, the Claimants (Eni-Vitol) sent a letter to the MoE contending that the HoD [ sent by the Energy Ministry ] did not reflect the discussions at the 21 July meeting. They reiterated their position that the agreement had been to suspend the October and November Directives, as well as the ongoing judicial proceedings.”

It is the complaining former Energy Minister’s insistence that Eni and Vitol comply with the terms of his one-sided HoD, which destroyed every prospect of negotiation. If he chooses not to call his instructions to them to submit to his will “directives”, he is free to do so and choose his preferred language.

This entitlement, however, does not negate his contribution to the animosity that landed Ghana in international arbitration, with embarrassing results.

Next time, I will be more diligent in adding footnotes to any term I use for the conduct of the former Minister so as not to offend his definitional sensibilities.

EC officials don’t attend swearing-ins without invitation

0

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has clarified that it is not the commission’s policy for its members, including the chairperson and deputies, to attend swearing-in ceremonies unless they receive an official invitation.

Speaking at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Wednesday, February 26, to review the 2024 general elections, Jean Mensa revealed that the commission did not receive an invitation to attend the swearing-in of President John Dramani Mahama or any ministerial inaugurations.

Her remarks come in response to questions about her absence at President Mahama’s swearing-in ceremony.

Mahama was officially sworn in on January 7, 2025, at Black Star Square in Accra, marking the start of his second term after securing victory in the 2024 general elections. The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, political leaders, and citizens who gathered to witness the event.

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo administered the oath of office, reaffirming Mahama’s commitment to serving Ghana and upholding the Constitution.

Addressing the matter, Jean Mensa stated: “I was here in the country, but per policy, the commission members, chairperson, and deputies don’t attend swearing-ins. Indeed, it is also by invitation, and we have never received an invitation to the swearing-in.

“I know that dignitaries and special guests are invited. But it has always been a matter of policy that we do not attend swearing-in ceremonies. At least for the duration that we have been in office, we have never attended any swearing-in ceremony,” she explained.

Alhaji Ishaq Saaeed acknowledging cheers

Alhaji Ishaq Saaeed has been installed as the new chief for the Muslim community in Sowutuom during a colourful ceremony last Sunday at the Alhaji Gabmoro Park Mile 7 Street.

The short installation ceremony witnessed Alhaji Ishaq Saaeed being taken through all the prescribed rituals in installing a chief under the guidance of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu and elders and other chiefs in the area.

Amidst the playing of traditional drums and the firing of musketry, Alhaji Ishaq Saaeed dressed in a beautiful white and gold embroidered Muslim attire, greeted his way to the inner court of the ceremonial park, where the chiefs in the area together with some selected guests had gathered.

The event was well attended by some clerics of the Muslim community in Sowutuom.

Speaking to journalists, Alhaji Ishaq Saaeed said he would mobilise the needed support from investors to develop the communities as a response to youth unemployment.

“I will settle all disputes within the Sowutuom traditional area, and I pledge to share all resources available to help in the development of the area,” he added.

Addressing issues of rising challenges in the community, Alhaji Ishaq Saaeed raised the issue of the stench in the community occasioned by poor drainage systems, which is also affecting the health of many in the community.

“We have an issue with drainage systems here at Sowutuom, we need to come out in our numbers to help save the situation. I will also ensure that the youth here get the needed support they need to thrive in their various endeavours,” he added.

DR Congo bans ex-president’s party over alleged rebel links

0

Joseph Kabila has denied having any links to the M23 rebels Joseph Kabila has denied having any links to the M23 rebels

The Democratic Republic of Congo has banned the party of former President Joseph Kabila, accusing him of links to the M23 rebel group which has seized large parts of the east of the country this year.

The ban comes amid reports that Kabila has returned to the country after spending two years in South Africa.

He is said to have returned to the town of Goma, which was seized by the Rwandan-backed M23 in January.

Kabila led DR Congo for 18 years, after succeeding his father Laurent, who was shot dead in 2001. Joseph Kabila was just 29 at the time.

An interior ministry statement said all activities of Kabila’s PPRD party had been banned because of its “ambiguous attitude” to the occupation of Congolese territory by the M23.

It also noted that Kabila had chosen to return to Goma, where he was being protected by the “enemy”.

The PPRD has not commented.

On Friday, the government accused Kabila, 53, of high treason and ordered the seizure of all his property.

Kabila has previously denied having links to the M23.

He has not commented on the latest moves by the Congolese government or confirmed that he has returned to DR Congo.

However, he did say earlier this month that he would be going back to the country. Senior PPRD officials have denied that Kabila is currently in Goma.

On Saturday, his spokesperson Barbara Nzimbi posted on X that Kabila would be addressing the nation in the coming hours or days.

Asked by BBC Great Lakes, the M23 spokesperson neither confirmed nor denied Kabila’s presence in Goma, saying: “I don’t see any problem him being here.”

Who is Joseph Kabila?

After being sworn in as president following his father’s death, he twice won elections. His second and final elected term in office officially ended in December 2016 but he refused to step down, saying it wasn’t possible to organise elections, leading to deadly protests.

He stayed in power for two more years until elections were finally held in 2018.

In January 2019, he handed power to Félix Tshisekedi, the official winner of a disputed election, which many election observers said was rightfully won by Martin Fayulu.

He accused Kabila and Tshisekedi of agreeing a deal to exclude him from power – something both men have denied.

But relations between the pair worsened and their parties’ coalition was formally ended in December 2020.

Kabila left DR Congo in 2023, officially to study in South Africa.

In January 2024, his doctoral thesis on the geopolitics of African relations with the US, China and Russia was validated at the University of Johannesburg.

Why has Kabila returned?

In a written statement to announce his forthcoming return, Kabila said it was motivated by a desire to help resolve the worsening institutional and security crisis in DR Congo.

He also told the French-language magazine Jeune Afrique he wanted to “play a role in seeking a solution after six years of complete retreat and one year in exile”.

But Ben Radley, a political economist and lecturer in international development at Bath University, noted that the leader of the political grouping which includes the M23, Corneille Nangaa, was the head of the electoral commission under Kabila and had been a “close ally”.

“In addition, the historical continuity with his father Laurent Kabila, who also entered Congo from the east in the late 1990s in his eventual march to the presidency, is also on the minds of many Congolese,” he told the BBC.

Akufo-Addo’s administration refused to listen to some of the advice we gave them

Former President Akufo-Addo [L] and Apostle Eric Nyamekye Former President Akufo-Addo [L] and Apostle Eric Nyamekye

Apostle Eric Nyamekye, the chairman of the Church of Pentecost, has refuted claims that during the presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, almost all the clergy were silent about his administration.

According to him, some of the clergy in the country were very vocal and active in criticizing and calling for changes to things they felt were not right under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia-led government.

Speaking in an interview with Oyerapa TV during the inauguration ceremony of President John Mahama on January 7, 2025, he alleged that most of the clergy’s contributions to the government were ignored, which resulted in the loss of their administration.

He explained that issues like the E-Levy, among other things they discussed with the administration, were not taken into consideration.

“We changed our strategy because we thought sitting on the radio and speaking against leaders wasn’t the right channel. If there were issues, we went to them directly. That was how we communicated with them, and we will use the same approach with this administration.

“I feel if you want the president to change certain things, you shouldn’t sit on the radio or behind your pulpit and say what you want. The president has to be respected.

“So, we went to them. Regarding the E-Levy and other matters, we were involved in the discussions. We were even part of those who made it possible for the percentage to come down a little bit. Despite all the things we said, they didn’t really heed our advice, which is why we are witnessing the outcome.

“For instance, the E-Levy, we thought at that time we didn’t need it because Ghanaians could have dodged it, but they didn’t pay attention to what we were saying,” he said.

PUWU demands clarity over reversal of John Ocansey’s appointment as ECG Deputy MD

0

The Public Utilities Workers Union (PUWU) has called for clarity from the government following the reported reversal of John Ayiku Ocansey’s appointment as Acting Deputy Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The demand comes after conflicting communications from ECG and the Ministry of Energy left the union questioning the decision-making process.

On March 17, 2025, a letter from ECG announced Ayiku Ocansey as the new Acting Deputy Managing Director, a move initially welcomed by ECG workers.

However, a subsequent statement from Energy Minister John Jinapor on March 18 declared that the earlier letter had been issued inadvertently and was withdrawn, effectively nullifying the appointment.

PUWU General Secretary Timothy Nyame, in an interview with Citi News, expressed the union’s confusion and frustration over the sudden reversal.

“We find it strange that one person’s appointment can be reversed by another,” Nyame said. He emphasized that Ayiku Ocansey, an ECG staff member, was set to assume his role on March 24, following what the union believed was a legitimate appointment by the President.

“It can only come from His Excellency, the appointing authority, to revoke an appointment he has made,” Nyame added, noting that the letter reversing the appointment was not signed by the President or the Chief of Staff.

Nyame questioned the basis for the withdrawal, stating, “We don’t believe his appointment has been reversed.”

He further asserted that the union had not opposed the appointment and saw no reason for it to be rescinded.

“We will demand answers as to why his appointment is being reversed,” he insisted.

Until his appointment, John Ayiku Ocansey was the HR Manager for ECG’s Accra East Region. He holds a BSc in Social Sciences from the University of Ghana, an MSc in Governance and Development from the University of Cape Coast, and an LLB from Mountcrest University College.

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu reveals how NPP election defeat report was leaked

0

Former Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu Former Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

The former Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has revealed the circumstances leading to the leakage of the report on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) election defeat in the Ashanti Region, which was put together by a fact-finding committee.

The former Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the NPP, Dennis Kwakwa, who was the Coordinator for all the committees, had been accused by a section of the party members of being responsible for the leakage.

However, in a radio interview shared on YouTube, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, former Member of Parliament for Suame and Chairman of the Investigative Committee commissioned by the Ashanti Regional Executive, refuted the accusation, absolving Kwakwa of any wrongdoing.

“Kwakwa was not the one who leaked the report. He was the Coordinator for all the committees. He had the final draft after we had concluded our work and edited the report. That is why some suspect he was the one who leaked it, but as I said, he is not the one. I have investigated and identified the person who leaked the report. But I can’t mention the name on air. It was not deliberate; I think the person was passing it on to others, and in the process of transmitting it, whoever received it leaked the report.

He continued: “Only four people had a soft copy of the report. Kwakwa was the custodian because he was the Coordinator. When we concluded, we decided that nobody should have the report. So even I, as the Chairman, didn’t have a copy of it. There was a need for us to give an elderly party member a copy, and we did so. Because the person was not in Kumasi, we had to send him the soft copy. There was a second person who was also key but had traveled. So he requested that a copy of the report be sent to him so he could read it while on his flight. And so it was sent to him. These two persons would not have leaked the report.

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu added: “There was a group that the committee had met. We were very transparent with the group, and they requested a copy of the report when it was ready. So we gave them a copy, but because the group was large, the report got leaked in the process of being transmitted among its members. It was not deliberate.”

Nvidia shares sink as Chinese AI app spooks markets

0

US tech giant Nvidia lost over a sixth of its value after the surging popularity of a Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) app spooked investors in the US and Europe.

DeepSeek, a Chinese AI chatbot reportedly made at a fraction of the cost of its rivals, launched last week but has already become the most downloaded free app in the US.

AI chip giant Nvidia and other tech firms connected to AI, including Microsoft and Google, saw their values tumble on Monday in the wake of DeepSeek’s sudden rise.

In a separate development, DeepSeek said on Monday it will temporarily limit registrations because of “large-scale malicious attacks” on its software.

The DeepSeek chatbot was reportedly developed for a fraction of the cost of its rivals, raising questions about the future of America’s AI dominance and the scale of investments US firms are planning.

Last week, OpenAI joined a group of other firms who pledged to invest $500bn (£400bn) in building AI infrastructure in the US.

President Donald Trump, in one of his first announcements since returning to office, called it “the largest AI infrastructure project by far in history” that would help keep “the future of technology” in the US.

DeepSeek is powered by the open-source DeepSeek-V3 model, which its researchers claim was trained for around $6m – significantly less than the billions spent by rivals.

But this claim has been disputed by others in AI.

The researchers say they use already existing technology, as well as open source code – software that can be used, modified or distributed by anybody free of charge.

DeepSeek’s emergence comes as the US is restricting the sale of the advanced chip technology that powers AI to China.

To continue their work without steady supplies of imported advanced chips, Chinese AI developers have shared their work and experimented with new approaches to the technology.

This has resulted in AI models that require far less computing power than before.

It also means that they cost a lot less than previously thought possible, which has the potential to upend the industry.

After DeepSeek-R1 was launched earlier this month, the company boasted of “performance on par with” one of OpenAI’s latest models when used for tasks such as maths, coding and natural language reasoning.

Silicon Valley venture capitalist and Trump adviser Marc Andreessen described DeepSeek-R1 as “AI’s Sputnik moment”, a reference to the satellite launched by the Soviet Union in 1957.

At the time, the US was considered to have been caught off-guard by their rival’s technological achievement.

DeepSeek’s sudden popularity has startled stock markets in Europe and the US.

In the US, AI chipmaker Nvidia ended Monday’s trading having plunged 16.9% while its rival Broadcom slumped 17.4%.

Other tech firms also sank, with Microsoft down 2.14% and Google’s owner Alphabet down over 4%.

In Europe, Dutch chip equipment maker ASML ended Monday’s trading with its share price down by more than 7% while shares in Siemens Energy, which makes hardware related to AI, had plunged by a fifth.

“This idea of a low-cost Chinese version hasn’t necessarily been forefront, so it’s taken the market a little bit by surprise,” said Fiona Cincotta, senior market analyst at City Index.

“So, if you suddenly get this low-cost AI model, then that’s going to raise concerns over the profits of rivals, particularly given the amount that they’ve already invested in more expensive AI infrastructure.”

Singapore-based technology equity adviser Vey-Sern Ling told the BBC it could “potentially derail the investment case for the entire AI supply chain”.

But Wall Street banking giant Citi cautioned that while DeepSeek could challenge the dominant positions of American companies such as OpenAI, issues faced by Chinese firms could hamper their development.

“We estimate that in an inevitably more restrictive environment, US access to more advanced chips is an advantage,” analysts said in a report.

Meanwhile, DeepSeek said on Monday it had been the victim of a cyberattack.

“Due to large-scale malicious attacks on DeepSeek’s services, we are temporarily limiting registrations to ensure continued service,” it said in a statement.

“Existing users can log in as usual. Thanks for your understanding and support.”

Who founded DeepSeek?

The company was founded in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng in Hangzhou, a city in southeastern China.

The 40-year-old, an information and electronic engineering graduate, also founded the hedge fund that backed DeepSeek.

He reportedly built up a store of Nvidia A100 chips, now banned from export to China.

Experts believe this collection – which some estimates put at 50,000 – led him to launch DeepSeek, by pairing these chips with cheaper, lower-end ones that are still available to import.

Mr Liang was recently seen at a meeting between industry experts and the Chinese premier Li Qiang.

In a July 2024 interview with The China Academy, Mr Liang said he was surprised by the reaction to the previous version of his AI model.

“We didn’t expect pricing to be such a sensitive issue,” he said.

“We were simply following our own pace, calculating costs, and setting prices accordingly.”

Call NDC Thugs To Order – Minority To Mahama

0

Jerry Ahmed Shaib

The Minority in Parliament has called on President John Dramani Mahama to take immediate action to rein in what they describe as “thugs” from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who are allegedly disrupting the re-collation of election results in the Ablekuma North Constituency.

According to the Minority, the ongoing violence and lawlessness in the country cannot be ignored by President Mahama, who they assert is fully aware of the situation.

Speaking to the media in Parliament, the Minority Second Deputy Whip and Member of Parliament for Weija Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, emphasised that the President, as the Commander-in-Chief, has a responsibility to ensure that order is maintained and that those engaging in criminal activities are held accountable.

Mr. Shaid, accused the NDC of deliberately inciting violence, with supporters engaging in thuggish behaviour in a bid to overturn the democratic process in the Ablekuma North constituency—an election he insists the NDC lost.

“The Minority Caucus stands united in sending a clear and urgent message to His Excellency the President, and to the Ghana Police Service, about the escalating lawlessness in the country,” Mr. Shaid declared. “We are deeply concerned by the growing chaos following the declaration of John Dramani Mahama as President.”

Mr. Shaid accused the NDC of deliberately fostering a climate of violence and disruption, with senior party members, including Mr Totobi Quakyi and Malik Basintale, allegedly orchestrating these attacks.

“The latest incident, in which NDC supporters, led by the regional organiser, physically attacked Electoral Commission officials and damaged property, is a shocking display of lawlessness,” Mr Shaid said.

“This is not just an isolated event, but part of a deliberate, coordinated effort by senior NDC members to disrupt the electoral process and prevent the NPP’s legitimate victory in Ablekuma North from being recognised.”

Mr. Shaid stressed that despite the NPP losing around 60 parliamentary seats, many of which were decided by narrow margins, the party had graciously accepted the election results. The NPP, he argued, upheld the values of democracy by conceding defeat with dignity and refraining from resorting to violence.

“The NPP graciously accepted our losses, even when the margins were as narrow as fewer than a thousand votes,” Mr Shaid noted. “We chose the path of respect for the democratic process, while the NDC, despite their clear defeat in Ablekuma North, has resorted to violence and disruption, claiming they are defending the Electoral Commission. This is nothing more than a smokescreen for their refusal to accept the will of the people.”

Mr Shaid thus reiterated his call on President Mahama to act swiftly and decisively, urging him to rein in the violent factions within his party.

“President Mahama, you can no longer claim ignorance of the escalating lawlessness and violence sweeping across the country,” Mr Shaid warned. “It is time for you to take responsibility for your party’s actions and bring the violence to an end. The time for inaction is over.”

The Minority also called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to take urgent action to restore law and order.

They are demanding that those responsible for the unrest be swiftly brought to justice to prevent further harm to the integrity of the nation’s democratic institutions.

“We must all stand united to ensure that Ghana’s democracy is not undermined by lawlessness and violence,” Mr Shaid concluded. “The authorities must act immediately to preserve peace, protect the rule of law, and uphold the integrity of our democratic system.”

“If I were Cristiano Ronaldo’s wife, I wouldn’t have to stress about making my own money. I could just relax and enjoy the soft life,” she remarked, laughing afterwards, as reported by Pulse.com.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez have been in a relationship since 2016. The Argentine-Spanish model met the Portugal star during his time with Real Madrid at a Gucci retail store in Spain, where she worked as a sales assistant.

The couple share two biological children; Alana Martina, born in 2017, and Bella Esmeralda, born in 2022. Sadly, Bella was part of a twin pregnancy, but her brother, Ángel, passed away at birth.

How 12-year-old Francisca Oteng-Mensah was detained and grilled by UK authorities for 5 hours

Francisca Oteng-Mensah is the former Member of Parliament of Kwabre East Francisca Oteng-Mensah is the former Member of Parliament of Kwabre East

The Chief Executive Officer of the Angel Group of Companies, Dr. Kwaku Oteng, has shared the story of how the former Member of Parliament of Kwabre East, Francisca Oteng-Mensah, was detained by UK officials at Gatwick Airport for over five hours while traveling.

According to him, he stated that his daughter, the lawmaker, was questioned by the authorities alone, without any legal representative or guardian present, following her detention.

He said he believed this was an attempt to investigate his business dealings and wealth.

He added that this occurred after the authorities became aware of his prominence on the internet and his influence as a businessman in the country, at a time when the lawmaker was just 12 years old and traveling with a friend.

“I knew my daughter, Francisca Oteng-Mensah, was a special child right from the onset of her birth. I remember in 2005, at the time she was 12 years old and she had to travel to the UK with my friend. There are three airports in the UK so she used the Gatwick Airport.

“She was detained at the airport for five hours because they saw that her father was a prominent person on the internet at the time. I asked her why she didn’t use Heathrow Airport instead of Gatwick and she said it was because my friend she was traveling with used that route to book his flight,” he narrated during an interview on Angel FM.

He added, “She was interviewed by about six UK officials who bombarded her with numerous questions. I only learned about her detention later when I received a call informing me of the incident. I had so much faith in her that I wasn’t overly worried. Afterward, I asked her about the questions she was asked, and she mentioned that she was surprised she had to endure such an ordeal.”

Dr. Oteng went on to speak highly of his daughter, the former Kwabre East MP and former Deputy Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, emphasising how special he always knew she would grow to be.

He further added that Oteng-Mensah’s election as a lawmaker, and her becoming the youngest MP at the time of her election at 23, did not surprise him, as he had always believed she was destined for greatness, especially after her UK ordeal at the age of 12.

Francisca Oteng-Mensah served as the Kwabre East for two terms between 2016 and 2020 after winning her parliamentary seat on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party.

A viral video circulating on social media shows supporters, believed to be members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), singing passionately in solidarity with the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 elections Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Dr Bawumia is captured in the midst of these supporters in a room filled with hope and energy as they sing and chant “Solo no, afi le solo no,… Hosana,” a song that translates to “What is coming is better than the previous.”

Carried away by the electrifying atmosphere, Dr Bawumia is seen singing along and making gestures that reflect his engagement with the crowd.

Some individuals who shared the footage on social media captioned it, “NPP Grassroots Mobbed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at his Private Office this evening. #bawumia2028.”

Bawumia lost the 2024 elections on the ticket of the NPPP to the then-opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

On Monday, December 9, 2024, Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa declared John Mahama the winner with a total of 6,328,397 votes.

Dr Bawumia received 4,657,304 votes in the election.

The NDC achieved historic success by securing a huge majority in Parliament, further solidifying their victory.

Protest by NPP MPs unreasonable – Kumadoe

0

Security consultant Richard Kumadoe has described the recent protest by Members of Parliament from the Minority Caucus and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as politically motivated and unjustified.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, May 31, Kumadoe said while citizens have the right to express their views, the actions taken at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in protest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako’s detention were not a reasonable response.

“At the point where the bail term was slapped on our brother Wontumi, two options came up: either you engage the investigators for something to be done or go to court for a review. What we saw at the space in the office of EOCO was not a reasonable action. It was pure politics.

“If EOCO breached the rights of our brother Wontumi, I will be the first person to say it. EOCO has the option to take him to court, but they also have the option to engage him.”

Kumadoe’s comments come amid growing controversy surrounding the arrest and continued detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, who serves as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP.

Chairman Wontumi was invited on Tuesday, May 27, by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service and investigated for alleged financial irregularities involving the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM BANK).

He was later picked up by  EOCO, which is conducting a separate investigation into possible financial crimes, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. EOCO granted him bail on Wednesday, May 28, setting the amount at GH₵50 million with two justified sureties.

In response, Minority MPs staged a dramatic sit-in outside EOCO’s head office in Accra, calling for his immediate release. The group, led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, marched from Parliament to EOCO and occupied part of the street in front of the agency’s premises.

The protest brought vehicular traffic to a halt and prompted a heavy police presence. Chants of “justice for Wontumi” and accusations of political persecution echoed throughout the scene, as the MPs accused EOCO and other state institutions of targeting political opponents.

Kumadoe, however, insisted that the proper channels were available to challenge the bail conditions, and the display at EOCO’s premises only served to politicise a legal process.

“As a country, we must allow investigative bodies to operate within the framework of the law. If there are genuine concerns about rights violations, those issues can be addressed through legal avenues, not street protests,” he added.

Foreign investigators on Wontumi’s trail – Deputy AG reveals

0

Deputy Attorney General Dr. Justice Srem Sai has confirmed that foreign investigative partners are actively tracking Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi, over suspicions of criminal activity tied to his business operations and personal dealings.

“There are issues with our foreign partners, an investigative agency,” Dr. Srem Sai revealed on JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday.

“We have partnered with other foreign agencies who are interested in things that have been traced—or suspicions of crime that have been traced—to his business and him personally.”

Pressed by host Evans Mensah on whether the investigation was triggered by Ghana’s international partners, the Deputy Attorney General clarified: “It is not that it will be triggered necessarily by our foreign partners, but they are interested in what we are doing, and they assist us, just as we assist them. That is how law enforcement works these days, it’s cooperative, it’s international.”

The revelation marks a significant turn in the ongoing scrutiny of the controversial businessman and political figure.

Dr. Srem Sai said the interest from foreign agencies stems from suspicions that “the process of crime or materials which are subject to criminal proceedings have found themselves in his possession.”

Evans Mensah then asked directly whether Wontumi had committed acts involving foreign jurisdictions, but Dr. Srem Sai declined to provide specifics.

“That is something I cannot put out at this point,” he responded. “But the point I’m trying to make is that we will not persecute anyone.”

He emphasised that disclosing certain operational details could compromise investigations.

“You need to understand—if I am here and I’m telling you the design and scheme, what I’m also doing is to inform the suspects that we are looking for you in this direction. And then it helps them to evade.”

Dr. Srem Sai’s comments appear to confirm that the state’s interest in Wontumi is not isolated or politically motivated, but part of a larger, transnational enforcement effort.

While the Deputy Attorney General did not reveal which specific agencies or countries were involved, his repeated references to “foreign partners” suggest a broadening scope in the Wontumi investigations.

“They are interested in Wontumi’s case,” he stressed.

UG dismisses claims of GHS11m graduation fee collection without medallions

0

The University of Ghana (UG) has refuted claims circulating on social media that it collected over GHS11 million in graduation fees without providing medallions and scroll holders.

In a statement on Monday, February 17, UG’s Public Affairs Directorate addressed a publication by Joy News and Joy 99.7 FM, labeling the claims as misleading and inaccurate.

According to the university, each of the 15,776 expected graduands paid a GHS500 graduation fee, totaling GHS7,888,000—not GHS11 million as reported. The fee covers essential services, including gown rental, congregation publication, graduation medallion, scroll holder, university souvenir, water, and administrative costs.

UG clarified that while all listed items were provided, procurement delays affected the distribution of medallions and scroll holders. A notice dated February 10, 2025, had already informed graduands of the delay.

The university assured that the missing items would be made available in due time.

“It is, therefore, unfortunate for JoyNews to put out a sensational story without recourse to readily available facts. We urge the public to disregard these misleading reports and rely on official University communications for accurate information,” the statement read.

The University of Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the highest standards in all its operations, including the organization of graduation ceremonies. The Public Affairs Directorate assured graduands that every effort is being made to deliver the outstanding items promptly.

He doesn’t get the recognition he deserves” – Rice praises Partey

0

Arsenal star Declan Rice has showered praise on teammate Thomas Partey, highlighting the Ghanaian midfielder’s influence and composure in the heart of the Gunners’ midfield.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League semi-final second-leg tie against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, May 7, Rice emphasised Partey’s importance to the team, especially with the Gunners needing to overturn a 1-0 deficit following a narrow first-leg loss in Paris.

“Thomas brings calmness to the team,” Rice said. “He doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves, but I’m lucky to have him beside me. He allows me the freedom to move around the pitch.”

Partey missed the first leg due to suspension, and Arsenal felt his absence early on as PSG took control and found the net through Ousmane Dembélé in the fourth minute.

The 31-year-old, who joined from Atlético Madrid in 2020, is expected to return for the second leg—his presence seen as a key boost as Arsenal chase their first Champions League final since 2006. Talks are ongoing between the club and Partey’s representatives regarding a contract extension, with his current deal nearing its end.

Obnoxious policies, bad economy made Nkrumah unpopular

0

Historian Kweku Darko Ankrah has detailed the circumstances that led to the overthrow of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, 59 years ago.

Dr. Nkrumah was overthrown on February 24, 1966, during a coup d’état led by Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka.

In an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Channel One TV, Mr. Ankrah attributed the coup to several factors, including unpopular policies, high inflation, a struggling economy, and nepotism.

He emphasised that these issues collectively contributed to the discontent that culminated in Nkrumah’s overthrow.

Mr. Ankrah’s insights shed light on the complex socio-economic and political challenges that Ghana faced during Nkrumah’s administration, offering a nuanced understanding of the events leading up to the 1966 coup.

“Most people their problem was that by 1964, the economy started tanking [economy experiencing a sudden decline] because most of the factories were being manned by a lot of CPP members instead of open access for all Ghanaians who had the competence or the technical know-how to work within the companies and factories. This was not done so it largely became partisan. All opportunities went to CPP supporters in all spheres.

“This also didn’t lead to the equitable sharing of the national cake. There was a lot of ill feeling economically that was hurting because the economy started tanking for the first time, what we called human inflation. What triggered most Ghanaians was the political policies of Nkrumah which moved towards a one-party state starting with certain obnoxious policies like the Alien Deportation Act… Politically these are some of the things that made Nkrumah unpopular.”

However, he acknowledged that Dr. Nkrumah implemented several policies, including the construction of 68 factories, the promotion of import substitution, the establishment of health facilities, the expansion of educational access, the founding of colleges, and the creation of three universities before his overthrow.

Why the 4 independent MPs in 9th Parliament can’t form their own caucus

0

The four independent MPs of the 9th Parliament The four independent MPs of the 9th Parliament

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, on Wednesday, January 8, 2024, explained why the four independent members in the 9th Parliament have to join either of the two main caucuses – the Majority and the Minority – instead of forming their own caucus.

According to the Speaker, the issue boils down to the total number of independent MPs in the House and the criteria provided by the Standing Orders of Parliament.

Speaker Bagbin explained that, as provided for in the new Standing Orders of Parliament, independent MPs must meet a minimum requirement of seven members to form their own caucus.

He added that with the number of independent MPs in the 9th Parliament standing at four, they fail to meet the criteria, hence the need for them to join either of the two main caucuses.

“We are still talking about Majority and Minority Caucuses because, by our rules, we have made provisions for a third caucus, and that is the Independent Caucus. But we decided that to constitute a third force, that is the Independent Caucus, you needed to have seven independent members in Parliament.

“As of now, we have four, and so the four have not met the threshold of seven,” the Speaker stated during deliberations by the House on the constitution and selection of committees on Wednesday.

He emphasized that for the independent MPs to be duly recognized as members of their chosen caucus, they would have to officially write to his office informing him of their decision.

“My instructions to the four independent members are that they have the option to decide which of the caucuses to officially transact business with in the House. They have that option, and that is usually done officially in writing to the Speaker of Parliament. I will make it known to the House, and it will be captured in the official records of the House.”

The 9th Parliament of Ghana, inaugurated on January 7, 2024, consists of 183 National Democratic Congress (NDC) members forming the Majority, while the opposition New Patriotic Party, which forms the Minority Caucus, is made up of 88 MPs.

Meanwhile, Kpeli Worlasi of Afram Plains North, Kwame Asare Obeng of Gomoa Central, Stanley Yaw Nandaya of Wulensi, and Kwame Ohene Frimpong of Asante Akyem North, who are the independent MPs in the 9th Parliament, have all announced their decision to join the Majority Caucus.

The 9th Parliament is currently without a representative for Ablekuma North, which has been under serious dispute between the NDC and NPP since the December 7, 2024, election.

Accra School of Hygiene launches centenary celebrations

0

By Jibril Abdul Mumuni

Accra, April 10, GNA – The Accra School of Hygiene has officially launched its centenary celebrations, marking 10 decades of excellence in training environmental and public health professionals in Ghana.

The event, held at the school’s premises, brought together government officials, health professionals, alumni, students, and stakeholders to commemorate the institution’s legacy and chart a path for its future.

On the theme, “A Century of Hygiene: Reviewing the Past, Refining the Future”, the ceremony highlighted the school’s pivotal role in Ghana’s public health sector since its establishment in 1925 as the nation’s oldest public health training institution.

Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh Minister of Health, in a speech read on his behalf, praised the school for its unwavering commitment to producing skilled environmental health officers, occupational health specialists, and sanitation professionals.

“For a century, this institution has been at the forefront of safeguarding public health, enforcing sanitation laws, and mitigating environmental health risks.”

“The recent introduction of the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health and Sanitation further demonstrates its dedication to innovation and excellence,” he said.

The Minister also acknowledged the school’s alignment with national and global health goals, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on clean water, sanitation, and good health.

Mr Smile Kobina Ametsi Principal of the Accra School of Hygiene, in his welcome address, outlined the institution’s growth over the years, from offering certificate programmes to now providing degree and diploma courses.

“We have expanded our training portfolio to include a BSc in Environmental Health and Sanitation, as well as new diploma programmes in Occupational Therapy and Occupational Health and Safety,” he said.

He further revealed plans to introduce additional undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including a Bachelor of Science(BSc) in Health Promotion and a Master’s in Environmental Health, pending accreditation.

Despite its achievements, the Principal highlighted pressing challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited lecture halls, and bureaucratic hurdles in staff transfers from local government to the Ministry of Health.

“We appeal to the government, alumni, and development partners to support our vision of becoming a centre of excellence in public health training,” he said.

The centenary will be marked by a series of activities throughout the year, including health outreach programmes, academic symposiums, and alumni engagements.

The school also aims to secure a new site for a state-of-the-art training facility to meet 21st-century health demands.

As part of the launch, the school matriculated its second batch of BSc Environmental Health students, reinforcing its commitment to producing the next generation of public health leaders.

Watch as armed security men storm Chairman Wontumi’s residence

Chairman Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP Chairman Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP

Armed security officials, purported to be officials of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), reportedly stormed the home of New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, on Friday, May 23, 2025.

A viral video of the incident showed armed men at the entrance of the Ashanti Region NPP chairman’s home in Kumasi.

One of the videos showed security officials, some in police uniforms and others in plain clothes, alighting from white pick-up trucks.

Another video showed the supposed security officials knocking and banging at the main entrance gate of Wontumi’s home.

A report by Citi FM on Friday indicated that the security team was demanding access to the premises, which was locked on their arrival.

It is not clear why the security officials were at Wontumi’s home, but the government recently suspended the mining licence of his company, Akonta Mining, accusing it of engaging in illegal mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve in the Western Region.

Chairman Wontumi has refuted the accusation, stating that he is being targeted because of his bid to run for the National Chairmanship position of the NPP.

Johnson Asiama uniquely qualified to hold BoG Governor position

0

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Acting Spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama, has expressed confidence in Dr Johnson Asiama’s qualification to hold the position of Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

This follows concerns raised by the Minority over the procedural and constitutional implications of Dr Asiama’s early assumption of office. According to the Minority, Dr Asiama should refrain from engaging in official duties at the BoG until his nomination as Governor is fully approved by the Council of State.

The caucus has also urged the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to exercise strict scrutiny in its engagements with Dr Asiama to prevent potential global reputational risks to Ghana.

This stems from the government’s recent withdrawal of all charges against Dr Asiama, who was previously facing trial in connection with the collapse of UniBank and UT Bank.

The Minority questions his credibility to serve as a lead negotiator with the IMF under these circumstances.

Speaking in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Wednesday, Ofosu highlighted Asiama’s extensive experience and expertise in economic and financial matters.

“He is a known economic and finance expert with significant acumen. He has worked in a previous capacity as the second deputy governor of the BoG and therefore is uniquely qualified to hold the position of governor of the BoG.

“That is what President Mahama considered in appointing him to the position, and we believe that he will do a very good job,” Ofosu stated.

He emphasised that the government is not worried about the opposition adding that stakeholders within the financial sector and the economy are well-grounded and understand the issues at hand.

“Government is not concerned. All the stakeholders within the financial sector, the stakeholders in the economy are people who are well-grounded and know what exactly the issues are regarding the economy and the nation’s finances.

‘They know too well that political actors want to grandstand and dabble in all manner of theatrics as a way of furthering their political interest.

“I am not sure that any serious investor out there or any player in the Ghanaian economy will make decisions based on some issues that the minority are raising, which are not grounded and motivated by politicking,” Kwakye Ofosu explained.

Ghanaian artistes need to embrace live band performances

0

Ghanaian musician Ayisi performing at an event Ghanaian musician Ayisi performing at an event

Ghanaian musician Emmanuel Kwadwo Oware, popularly known as Ayisi, has urged his colleagues to improve their craft by performing with live bands.

According to him, the ability to perform with a live band is true proof to an artiste’s professionalism, and he believes many in the industry are falling short.

Speaking in an interview with AJ Sarpong on 3FM, Ayisi noted that performing with a live band demands a different level of discipline and stage presence compared to simply singing over a PA system or pre-recorded backing tracks, which he believes is easy.

Ayisi further praised gospel artistes for setting a standard when it comes to live music, noting that their commitment to rehearsals and real-time instrumentation gives them a natural advantage on stage.

“Performing with a live band is different from performing with a PA system. If you haven’t been doing live performances or training for some time, it will become apparent.

“This is why gospel artists excel in live performances; they rehearse and play shows with live bands consistently, and it shows in their work,” Ayisi stated.

In contrast, he pointed out that many secular artistes rely heavily on studio tricks and vocal enhancements that fail to translate in live performances.

“It’s relatively easy to go into a studio, piece together tracks and rely on auto-tuning. But artistes need to show workings,” he added.

By using what he described as “show workings,” Ayisi encouraged artistes to prove their artistry beyond what fans hear on recorded tracks.

Mahama didn’t have any international crisis or pandemic, but he left us with ‘dumsor’- Ama Daaku

0

According to GhanaWeb, Ellen Ama Daaku, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, has taken a strong stance against former President John Mahama following his recent comments about the economy of Ghana, which he characterized as having been “criminally mismanaged.”

Responding to Mahama’s remarks during an interview on The Forum on Asaase Radio, Daaku pointed out Mahama’s own economic performance as he exited office in 2016.

She emphasized that Mahama should reflect on his time in power, questioning the state of the economy he left behind.

Daaku highlighted the contrast between the economic conditions of 2016 and those of 2024, urging Mahama to consider this comparison seriously.

She also noted the difficulties the country experienced during Mahama’s presidency, stating that he was fortunate not to face any major international crises or pandemics.

However, she criticized his administration for the energy challenges, mentioning the persistent issues of power outages, known colloquially as “dumsor.”

“He [Mahama] is lucky.

“He didn’t have any international crisis or pandemic, but what did he leave us? He left us with dumsor,” she stated.

Daaku pointed out the severe issues in the power sector during Mahama’s tenure, asserting that the subsequent government under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo worked to stabilize it over the past eight years.

Yet, she claimed that even in 2025, power reliability remains a concern, reflecting poorly on Mahama’s management of the energy sector.

“The power sector was terrible. We had Nana Addo Dankwa’s government for eight years that stabilized it. But now, in 2025, our lights are still off,” she stated.

Adu-Boahene and wife still behind bars at EOCO

0

Kwabena Adu-Boahene, the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), and his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng, remain in custody at the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) headquarters, according to their lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea.

The couple has been detained as investigations into allegations of financial misconduct and corruption continue.

Speaking on the matter in an interview on the Citi Prime News, Akyea expressed confidence in his client’s resilience and determination to see justice prevail.

“He is still behind bars at EOCO headquarters, and I know he is determined to relax until justice will set him free,” the lawyer stated.

The case has drawn significant public attention, with allegations of embezzlement and misuse of public funds dominating headlines. Adu-Boahene, who served as the head of the NSB, is accused of diverting funds intended for cybersecurity infrastructure into private accounts. His wife is also implicated in the ongoing investigations.

Atta Akyea has criticised the handling of the case, emphasising the importance of due process and the presumption of innocence.

He reiterated his commitment to ensuring that his clients receive a fair trial and that their rights are upheld throughout the legal proceedings.

CMCE, ActionAid Ghana sensitises community-based violence teams on conflict

0

The Coalition for Maternal Health and Citizen Empowerment (CMCE) and ActionAid Ghana have trained Community-Based Anti-Violence Teams (COMBAT) in the Asutifi North and South districts on the early warning signs of conflict.

Conflict, a disagreement or clash between individuals or groups involving opposing interests, goals, or viewpoints, can manifest in overt arguments or passive-aggressive behaviour stemming from differing perspectives, unmet needs, communication breakdowns, or power imbalances.

It can be expressed verbally in arguments, physically through altercations, or through more subtle behaviors like passive-aggressiveness or emotional withdrawal.

During a COMBAT review and planning meeting at Kenyasi in the Ahafo Region, the Programs Officer for ActionAid Ghana in the Bono, Ahafo, and Bono East regions, Yaw Osei Boateng, said issues of conflict are increasing and that there is a need to sensitize the public.

He indicated that conflict can occur in personal relationships, workplaces, associations, families, among ethnic groups, and in other areas of society, adding that we must join hands to address them amicably and promptly whenever they occur.

Mr. Boateng stated that early warning signs of conflict can manifest in various ways, including behavioral changes, emotional shifts, and physical reactions, providing valuable insights into the potential for conflict escalation and allowing for early intervention and de-escalation.

“While often perceived negatively, conflict can also be a catalyst for growth and change if handled constructively, where resolution strategies can include negotiation, compromise, or even seeking mediation,” the officer added.

He reiterated that conflict prevention involves addressing the root causes of conflict, such as inequality, poverty, and lack of political participation, and building resilience in societies to withstand potential triggers of violence.

Key aspects of conflict prevention include addressing root causes, recognizing early warning signs, and building peace through conflict resolution.

This involves promoting the peaceful settlement of disputes through dialogue, mediation, and other conflict resolution mechanisms.

The Executive Director of CMCE, Yaw Osei Boateng, noted that the center collaborates with state-owned institutions, namely CHRAJ, DoVVSU, and the Department of Social Welfare, which update them on issues of violence happening in the communities.

He said behavioural warning signs of violence include repeated loss of temper, frequent physical fighting, vandalism or property damage, increased use of drugs and alcohol, and an increased demonstration of risk-taking behavior.

Other signs, the Executive Director noted, include announcing plans or threats to commit acts of violence or harm others, enjoyment in hurting animals, and carrying, accessing, or having a fascination with weapons, especially guns.

According to Mr. Mahama, if a student or any other person in the neighborhood shares information or behaves in a way that leads you to believe he or she could harm himself or herself or others, it must be reported to the appropriate authorities, including security officers.

A participant, Matilda Asare, on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked CMCE and ActionAid Ghana for enlightening them on issues of conflict, its causes, possible solutions, and other preventive measures, saying that “the knowledge and skills acquired will be used.”

The Centre for Maternal Health and Community Empowerment (CMCE), established in 1995 and in partnership with ActionAid Ghana, is a national non-governmental organization (NGO) operating in four districts of the then Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana.

It operates in sectors of the economy, namely agriculture, anti-corruption, civil society, NGOs, education, food security, fundraising, gender, health, human rights, and rural development.

An abandoned mini commercial bus on the Sawla-Tuna highway has claimed the lives of a father and his 10-year-old son at Saguri Sakpari in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district of the Savannah Region.

The duo, who perished on the spot, were reportedly returning to Kalba, a suburb of the district, at night when their vehicle crashed into the abandoned accident bus.

Their bodies have since been buried by their family members in Kalba.

The mini bus had been involved in a fatal accident two weeks prior, colliding head-on with an Accra-Wa bound OA bus.

That crash resulted in the deaths of five passengers in the mini bus, including the driver and his mate. While the OA bus was towed away, the mini bus remained at the scene, leading to this latest tragedy.

Checks by Myjoyonline in the community revealed that police personnel, stationed at a nearby checkpoint and present at the initial accident scene, failed to ensure the removal of the mini bus to prevent further casualties.

Some road users expressed their frustration and disappointment over the authorities’ inaction.

“To me, these ordeals are very much preventable, but we are allowed to face them because somebody somewhere is sleeping over his or her job. Just imagine, the day of the first accident, I saw the police here, and since then, nothing and this man and his son came and died justike that. So, where are the police men? “Issifu Kipo inquired.

For Debla Stephen, “It’s about much I do. How many people do the police or the car owner want to sacrifice here before they tow this car away. I need the Savannah Regional police commander to act now to save more souls, “he appealed.

As of the time of filing this report, the abandoned vehicle was still on the road, posing a continuous danger to motorists.

First Lady calls for integration of mental health in child healthcare

0

By Jibril Abdul Mumuni

Accra, Feb. 8, GNA – First Lady, Mrs. Lordina Mahama, has called for the integration of mental health services into child healthcare strategies.

She said the integration of mental health in child healthcare delivery required a holistic approach to address the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of children.

Speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the Paediatric Society of Ghana’s Annual General and Scientific Meeting (AGSM), 2025 in Accra, Mrs. Mahama highlighted the growing mental health challenges faced by children, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

The event on the theme: “Bridging the Gaps and Building Resilience in Child Health Care Delivery Across Ghana,” brought together healthcare professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss strategies for improving child healthcare delivery.

The AGSM 2025 of the Paediatric Society of Ghana presents a pivotal opportunity to unite diverse stakeholders in the mission to achieve Universal Health Coverage for children across Ghana.

The conference brought together esteemed professionals, researchers, and leaders from various fields, providing a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration.

It will also engage partners and stakeholders including WHO, UNICEF, Ghana Health Service, GJA and GMA to discuss the common goal of ensuring a resilience delivery of quality child healthcare across Ghana.

Mrs. Mahama stressed that mental health was a critical component of a child’s overall development.

“Building resilience in child healthcare delivery is not just about addressing physical health gaps. It is also about fostering emotional, psychological, and social development,” she said.

The First Lady said that children in remote areas often faced significant barriers to accessing essential health services, leading to preventable diseases and long-term developmental challenges.

She called on healthcare professionals, including paediatricians and nurses, to address mental health disparities by leveraging technology, training community health workers, and strengthening partnerships with local organizations.

Dr. Hilda Mantebea Boye, President of the Paediatric Society of Ghana, echoed the call for Universal Health Coverage to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare for all children, regardless of their background or financial status.

Dr. Boye said there were disparities between urban and rural healthcare access and advocated for strengthened primary care, expanded paediatric services, and innovative solutions like telemedicine.

She said that collaborative efforts, sustainable financing, and a multi-agency approach were essential to building a resilient healthcare system that safeguards the future of Ghana’s children.

NPP NEC holds high-stakes meeting over constitutional reforms, mulls electing flagbearer before executives

0

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is currently engaged in a crucial meeting at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, deliberating on proposed constitutional reforms that could significantly reshape the party’s internal power dynamics and electoral processes.

Chaired by the party’s First Vice Chairman, Danquah Smith Buttey, the meeting has drawn top-tier party leadership, including former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako.

At the heart of the discussions is a proposal from the party’s Constitution Review Committee recommending a sweeping review of the NPP’s internal rules. Among the most contentious proposals is a suggestion to elect the party’s presidential candidate before national executive officers — a reversal of the current practice.

Sources say the idea is aimed at aligning executive leadership with the party’s chosen flagbearer to avoid internal frictions during election cycles. However, critics within the party warn it could consolidate too much power in the hands of the flagbearer and undermine checks and balances within the party structure.

Also under discussion is whether appointed executives should be officially recognised as part of the party’s national leadership framework, a move that would grant them voting rights and greater influence in key decision-making processes.

The meeting, still ongoing, is expected to conclude with a resolution to forward the proposals to the party’s National Council for further consideration. Should the National Council approve, the reforms will be tabled at the next National Delegates Conference for a final decision.

The outcome of today’s deliberations is likely to shape the NPP’s posture ahead of the 2028 general elections, with implications for both party unity and leadership succession.

Ghana Bans Foreigners From Local Gold Trading in Major Overhaul – The China-Global South Project

Ghana on Monday announced it was banning all foreigners from trading in its local gold market as part of sweeping reforms aimed at boosting foreign exchange reserves and stabilising the local currency.

The ban takes effect on May 1 and grants exclusive authority to a new state body, the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), to regulate and control artisanal and small-scale gold mining in a country where illegal mining has become a major issue.

Minkah-Premo tops Ghana’s largest law firms by number of lawyers in 2025

0

Minkah-Premo has topped the 2025 law firm rankings by lawyer count, with Kumasi-based Momim & Botta Solicitors the only non-Accra firm among the top five.

Ghana’s legal landscape continues to grow, and at the top of the latest rankings stands Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline & Partners (MPOBB), better known simply as Minkah-Premo. According to new figures released by Dennislaw Ghana, the firm leads the country in 2025 with a total of 54 lawyers, setting it apart in a market where size increasingly matters.

The rankings, based on the number of lawyers employed, offer a snapshot of Ghana’s most prominent law firms as of April 25, 2025. With legal services expanding alongside the country’s economic growth, firms have been steadily building larger teams to meet rising client demand across sectors like energy, finance, and infrastructure.

Trailing Minkah-Premo is Bentsi-Enchill, Letsa & Ankomah, a firm well-known for its corporate and commercial law expertise, which claims 44 lawyers. Moomim & Botta Solicitors comes in third with 43 lawyers — a notable achievement not just for its size, but also for its location.

Based in Kumasi, Moomim & Botta Solicitors is the only firm in the top five that operates outside Accra, making it a standout in a list otherwise dominated by firms from the capital.

AB & David Africa, with 42 lawyers, and Sam Okudzeto and Associates, with 40, round out the top five. With just a few lawyers separating the second through fifth spots, the competition among Ghana’s largest firms is razor-thin — a sign of the growing sophistication and competitiveness of the legal market.

The numbers tell a broader story, too. While the legal market remains heavily Accra-centric, Moomim & Botta Solicitors’ strong showing signals a shift: that major legal services are no longer confined to the capital alone.

The emergence of regional players points to a more geographically diverse legal future, although a larger concentration (over 76 per cent) of the lawyer count remains in Accra.

Nonetheless, Minkah-Premo’s dominance at the very top is clear. With the largest team in the country, the firm is well-positioned to handle increasingly complex and cross-sector legal work. As client needs evolve, size, depth of expertise, and geographic reach are becoming critical.

Minkah-Premo’s 2025 ranking confirms it is not only keeping pace with these changes — it is setting the standard.

Will this remain the status quo in 2026 or will there a surprise new player? Like you, we await the answer.

Mahama launches Feed Ghana project; Encourages families and schools to grow their own food

0

President John Dramani Mahama has launched the Feed Ghana Programme, a national initiative aimed at boosting local food production, creating jobs, and reducing the country’s reliance on imported food.

The programme was officially introduced in Techiman, Bono East Region, on Saturday, April 12  2025.

Speaking at the event, Mr Mahama said the initiative, popularly referred to as Yeridua, is centred on practical farming approaches that involve households, schools, communities and institutions.

“We’ll invest in controlled environment farming, including greenhouse technology and urban agriculture,” he said. “But we’re also going back to the basics encouraging every household to grow what they can eat.”

Mr Mahama urged families to cultivate small backyard gardens. He said growing common vegetables such as tomatoes, onions, garden eggs and okra at home could help cut food costs while improving diets.

Recalling the “Operation Feed Yourself” campaign of the 1970s, he noted that backyard farming was once common and could be again.

“For those of you who grew up during the Operation Feed Yourself era, you remember how your parents had backyard gardens. So when it was time to pound fufu, there was no need to visit the market. You just stepped outside and picked some nyadua, pepper, onion and tomato to make the soup,” he said.

Beyond households, Mr Mahama said the programme would also involve Senior High Schools, particularly those with land. These schools, he noted, will be supported to grow food and rear animals to support their kitchens and supplement the school feeding programme.

“You’ll grow vegetables to improve the meals and raise cows, goats and sheep to provide meat for students,” he said. “We want students to begin to see agriculture not just as a subject in the classroom but as meaningful work they can take up.”

He added that the National Service Scheme, Ghana Prisons Service and National Youth Employment Agency would all take part in the rollout. Religious groups, he said, had also expressed interest in participating.

Another component of the programme is the revival of the national poultry initiative. Under this arrangement, 50 anchor farmers will receive support to produce four million birds, equivalent to about 10,000 metric tonnes of chicken. In addition, 55,000 households will each be helped to rear 500 birds annually.

“Ghana imports nearly 400 million dollars’ worth of chicken every year. That is something we should not be proud of,” Mr Mahama said. “This project is going to change that.”

To support these activities, the government plans to deploy 5,000 agricultural and veterinary graduates across the country.

Mr Mahama said they will be assigned to schools, communities and institutions, and will be absorbed into the public sector as job openings become available.

He also mentioned other parts of the programme, including grain, legume, vegetable and livestock farming projects.

Mr Mahama said the broader goal is to help the country return to a culture of self-reliance and build a stronger food system that works for everyone, from farmers in rural areas to families living in cities.

“This is about feeding ourselves again and making farming part of our everyday lives,” he said.

Blackmail, Sextortion losses near GH¢500,000 in early 2025 – CSA

0

Financial losses from online blackmail and sextortion in Ghana have surged to GH¢499,044 in the first four months of 2025, according to data from the Cyber Security Authority (CSA).

This marks a significant jump from the GH¢103,663 recorded during the same period in 2024, highlighting the growing economic impact of increasingly sophisticated cybercriminals.

The CSA’s latest public alert noted a slight increase in reported cases between January and April 2025 compared to the 155 cases documented in the same timeframe last year.

The perpetrators typically use fake social media accounts, often featuring attractive profile images, to lure victims into romantic conversations. After building trust, they manipulate victims into sharing explicit content, which is then used for extortion.

Victims are usually forced to pay ransoms via mobile money under threats that compromising images or videos will be posted online. However, the CSA warns that payments often do not stop the blackmail. In many cases, victims continue to receive threats even after complying.

To avoid detection, attackers often shift conversations to encrypted platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal.

The CSA is urging the public to remain vigilant—avoid engaging with unfamiliar online profiles, never share intimate content online, and report suspicious activity through its 24-hour cybersecurity support channels.

Ghana Month series: Exploring the evolution of Ghana’s currency

0

Money, they say, makes the world go round. But it also tells a deeper story—a story of independence, leadership, and national identity.

As part of our JoyNews Ghana Month series, we take a step back in time to explore the people behind the Ghana Cedi.

At the Artist Alliance Gallery, the General Manager, Nii Glover, walks us through the evolution of Ghana’s currency, revealing the historical shifts that have shaped the notes and coins we use today.

“We used to spend pounds under British colonial rule until we gained independence. In 1966, under Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, we introduced our currency—the first cedi—featuring his portrait.”

However, he stated that Dr Nkrumah’s image on Ghana’s money was short-lived following his overthrow in 1966, where his portrait was removed from the Cedi, reflecting the shifting political landscape and a rewriting of history.

Over the years, Ghana’s currency has become a platform for honouring national figures.

The 50 pesewas coin, for instance, features Rebecca Naa Dedei Aryeetey, a businesswoman and activist who played a key role in financing Ghana’s independence struggle.

Beyond individuals, Ghana’s banknotes also highlight national landmarks and industries. The Larabanga Mosque, cocoa farms, and the Akosombo Dam all appear on different denominations, symbolising Ghana’s heritage and economic strength.

One of the most significant changes to Ghana’s money came in 2007 under former President John Agyekum Kufuor, when the Bank of Ghana redenominated the Cedi, knocking off four zeros.

This meant that the old 10,000 cedi note became today’s 1 cedi—a move aimed at simplifying transactions and strengthening the economy.

Through every redesign, Ghana’s currency has remained a reflection of its history, struggles, and triumphs.

McDan Foundation To Empower Zongo Women

0

Dr. Daniel McKorley (2nd from right) flanked by opinion leaders from the Zongo community

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of McDan Foundation, Dr. Daniel McKorley has pledged to transform Zongo communities in the Ashanti Region by offering interest-free loans to women.

With such support, the women in the catchment area will be economically empowered to support their families and improve their well-being.

Dr. McKorley, popularly known as McDan, believes it is about time women, as well as the youth in the Zongo communities, divert their aggression towards developing their communities.

Per the latest unemployment data by the Ghana Statistical Service, about two out of ten women are unemployed.

The statistics from the third quarter of 2023 further indicate that about 8 out of 10 females are vulnerable.

Though governments over the years have channelled resources towards the development of Zongo communities, unemployment still remains a worry.

The CEO of McDan Foundation emphasised the need for women to receive support, to create employment.

He continued that the role of Zongo women cannot be discounted, hence the need to resource them to be independent and contribute significantly to their homes.

Dr. McKorley made this pledge during the launch of the 2025 ‘McDan Inter Tribes Football Tournament’ at Aboabo Middle B School Park recently, with a Champions Super Cup match between first two previous winners; the Hausas and Moshies.

The Moshies won the match 6:5 against the Hausas in a pulsating penalty shootout to be crowned as champions.

“We organised this tournament to bring unity among the communities.  We want the Muslim youth to be more   responsible and more dedicated towards their own community, so that they will be seen as better young men and women for a better tomorrow,” he said.

According to Dr. McKorley, the decision to assist the Zongo women is part of McDan Foundation’s broader corporate social responsibility initiatives, which include supporting communities and vulnerable people.

The McDan Foundation, he added, has a history of supporting various initiatives, including building schools in deprived communities and investing in youth sports development.

Dr. McKorley, who has been sponsoring some needy but brilliant university students from the Zongo communities, pledged to pick students onto his scholarship scheme this year.

For his part, Mohammed Nurudeen Abubakar, the President for Zongo Forum, thanked Dr. McKorley and his Foundation for their gesture and their quest to be part of this year’s Inter Tribes Football Tournament in the Zongo communities of the Ashanti Region.

“The Kumasi Zongo is having over 40 tribes that are living in peace and harmony, so he decided to sponsor this laudable initiative of inter tribes football tournament.  We are pleased to have him associating with our Zongo community,” Nurudeen Abubakar stressed.

He added, “Football brings unity, and this tournament brings on board over thousands of people to support their tribes, and that is the beauty of it. We have never had an incidence of violence despite having no security, meaning with the appropriate mechanism, our people can live in peace. Our aim is to unite us such that we see each other as one.”

Some key stakeholders at the event were Sheikh Zakaria A. Rahman (Deputy Ashanti Regional Chief Imam), Alhaji Musah Akambonga (President of the Council of Zongo Chiefs), Alhaji Ibrahim Sanford III (Acting Sarkin Zongo, Ashanti), Sheikh Abbas Karara (Deputy Regional Imam, Ashanti) and many other stakeholders from the Zongo communities.

Thieves raid popular Bibiani chop bar, steal meat, eggs and utensils in bold midnight heist

A viral video circulating on social media has captured the aftermath of a daring break-in at a renowned chop bar in Bibiani, Western North Region, where a group of unidentified thieves reportedly stole an assortment of food items and utensils in a targeted heist.

The eatery, Di Woho Nkomo, is widely regarded as one of the best chop bars in the area, a reputation that appears to have drawn the attention of criminals focused not on cash, but on cuisine.

According to a report by Oyerepa, the thieves struck at an odd hour and made off with a bowl of grasscutter meat, crates of eggs, goat meat, gallons of cooking oil, and various kitchen utensils.

“They did not touch money or electronics—only food,” a local reporter noted, adding that the thieves seemed to have a clear appetite-driven agenda. “Anything that contained food or meat, they took.”

The owner of the chop bar, whose identity was withheld, told Oyerepa that this was not the first time such an incident had occurred.

Despite the repeated thefts, she has refrained from reporting to the police, expressing doubt that any meaningful action would follow. “I’ve stopped wasting time reporting. Nothing changes,” she said.

In response to the incident, the frustrated owner revealed a new measure she intends to enforce: she will no longer allow customers to linger in the restaurant after meals to watch television—a practice she suspects may give potential thieves too much time to study the premises.

The video and story have sparked mixed reactions online, with many expressing concern over rising petty crimes and questioning the effectiveness of law enforcement in handling such localised incidents.

Others sympathised with the chop bar operator, urging authorities to take community-level theft more seriously.
