Mpox cases have risen to four, following a fresh outbreak in May 2025.
Two additional cases have been confirmed in Accra by the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service, following the first reported case on Thursday, May 15.
The latest infections, one in the Greater Accra Region and another in the Western Region, were confirmed in a statement released by GHS Director-General Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea on Sunday, May 18.
The release said the respective regional health directorates have promptly activated public health measures, including contact tracing, to prevent further spread of the virus.
Preliminary assessments indicate that these two newly confirmed cases have no epidemiological link to the earlier reported cases.
“We take this opportunity to remind the public that Mpox is a viral disease transmitted to humans through close contact with an infected person, animal, or contaminated materials.
“Common symptoms include rash, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes,” the release added.
Ghana’s outbreak of Mpox began on June 8, 2022, when five initial cases were reported.
By November 2023, the country had confirmed a total of 34 cases. Before this outbreak, Mpox was not known to be endemic in Ghana.
A circular signed by the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service called for a renewed response to the threat, including improved detection and response strategies.
Mpox is a viral illness similar to smallpox. It typically causes fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash. The virus spreads through direct contact with an infected person’s skin or bodily fluids, including through sexual contact. Symptoms may include fever, rash or lesions, tiredness, headaches, muscle and back pain, and swollen glands.
Across Africa, the disease remains a major concern. As of March 2025, more than 24,200 cases and around 260 deaths have been recorded in 22 countries. The Democratic Republic of the Congo has been hardest hit, accounting for a large share of both the cases and the fatalities.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye Kotey, has issued a stern warning to vehicle owners misusing Defective Vehicle (DV) plates.
In a recent interview with Kasapa FM, Kotey emphasised that DV plates are intended solely for car dealers and should be used for a maximum of two weeks after a vehicle is cleared from the port.
“If you are a car dealer and you are coming to sell your car, we don’t determine when you sell your car. So we give you DV plates — Defective Vehicle plates — ‘defective’ in the sense that we have not tested the car to ensure it is roadworthy,” he explained.
“So that DV plate, you are supposed to use it for two weeks until you sell the car. It’s illegal to drive with DV number plates more than 14 days after clearing your vehicle from the port,” he stated.
He further highlighted the misuse of these plates by individuals who are not authorised dealers.
“I’ve seen a lot of people who don’t deal in cars using DV plates. And the police will be hard on them from now on. So I beg you with all humility — go and register your car if you’ve used it for more than 14 days after taking it from the port.
“I once heard someone saying that he buys the plates and sells them. It’s wrong. It’s illegal. It’s criminal,” he warned.
Kotey also revealed alarming discrepancies in the DVLA’s plate issuance system, noting that approximately 3,000 DV plates go unaccounted for each month, suggesting large-scale theft and illegal distribution.
To combat the issue, the DVLA plans to implement a new system in 2026 to verify the authenticity of all number plates in Ghana.
This initiative aims to curb the circulation of fake plates and ensure that only authorised dealers have access to DV plates.
“Some of the plates are fake too. But because there’s no system to check the authenticity of the plates, we cannot do anything. But I can assure them that next year, we will have a system to check the authenticity of every plate in Ghana,” he promised.

The road named after the late Jerry John Rawlings (L) in Burkina Faso
The government of Burkina Faso has named a major road in its capital town, Ouagadougou, after the first president of Ghana’s 4th Republic, the late Jerry John Rawlings.
The naming was done during the inauguration of the Thomas Sankara Mausoleum, in honour of the late Burkinabe military leader’s friend, Jerry John (JJ) Rawlings.
Reports indicated that the event was attended by a delegation from Ghana, including family members of the late former president.
Visuals of the road-naming ceremony shared on social media showed two children of the late president – Kimathi Rawlings and Amina Rawlings – at the event.
A signpost showing the name of the road reads, “AVENUE FLT LT JERRY JOHN RAWLINGS, ANCIE[N] PRESIDENT DU GHANA, NE LE 22/06/1947 – DCD LE 12/11/2020.”
This is the second road in Burkina Faso to be named after a Ghanaian. The first major road was named in honor of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Naija News reports that famous UK-based music executive, Adesope Olajide, better known as ‘Shopsydoo’, made this known in a post via his Instagram page on Saturday night.
Private attorney and civic advocate Oliver Barker-Vormawor has stepped forward to claim authorship of the address then–Vice President John Dramani Mahama delivered to Parliament and the nation upon the sudden passing of President John Evans Atta Mills in July 2012 as reported by Ghana Web.
Barker-Vormawor, who was finishing his undergraduate studies at the University of Ghana, Legon, when the request arrived, says he learned of it late one night from Raymond Atuguba—an associate of Mahama’s office.
With only hours to spare, he set aside sleep and crafted the speech that would later be hailed as a unifying message during a moment of national shock.
“I’m most proud of John Mahama’s address to Parliament after Mills died because I wrote that speech,” Barker-Vormawor recounted in a recent interview.
He described working through the night, “sleeping on the floor” as he put the finishing touches on the text that Mahama would read the following morning.
On his work, Barker-Vormawor said the speech’s strength lay in its ability to transcend partisan divides. “It’s the most bipartisan address I’ve ever heard,” he stated, explaining that he believed President Mills’s death should serve as an opportunity for collective renewal.
His own aspirations for the country, he said, were woven into the final version, which called for unity and hope amid grief.
President Atta Mills, Ghana’s third democratically elected leader, died on July 24, 2012, at Accra’s 37 Military Hospital, just three days after celebrating his 68th birthday.

The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey has issued a strong call for the immediate prosecution of Akonta Mining Ltd, accusing the government of failing to act on clear evidence of the company’s involvement in illegal mining activities that have devastated forest reserves and polluted critical water bodies.
In a statement released on Sunday, May 18, and signed by its Convenor, Kenneth Ashigbey, the Coalition expressed “shock and disappointment” over what it described as government inaction, despite public evidence of Akonta Mining’s unlawful operations in forest reserves and along water bodies.
The Coalition warned that the failure to prosecute the company and any complicit government officials sends a dangerous message of impunity and selective justice.
According to the group, Akonta Mining has been operating illegally since 2022, contributing significantly to the pollution of the Tano River and the destruction of the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve. These claims are supported by an investigative documentary produced by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, which detailed the environmental damage linked to the company’s activities.
The Coalition noted that the Ministry’s findings provided sufficient grounds for prosecution—yet no legal action has been taken.
While acknowledging the government’s move to freeze Akonta Mining’s bank accounts, the group insisted this was “only a partial measure” and stressed that it could not replace full criminal prosecution.
In addition to pursuing charges against the company, the Coalition also called for the arrest and prosecution of officials from the Minerals Commission, Forestry Commission, and security services who may have aided, abetted, or negligently enabled Akonta Mining’s illegal operations.

And just when you thought he’d stop digging his own neocolonial grave, Monsieur Breton went for the jugular:
“Africa has no history, therefore cannot run the world.”
Ahem.
Where do we begin, monsieur? With the ancient empires of Mali and Ghana, when Paris was still a muddy village? Or with Imhotep, the African architect who built the world’s first stone structures while Europe was still grappling with tribal face paint?
Kwame Nkrumah must be turning in his grave—but probably not with sorrow. Perhaps with a revolutionary chuckle. For it was Nkrumah who warned us:
“Neocolonialism is the last stage of imperialism.”
Now, the neocolonialists aren’t even subtle. They say the quiet part loud—and in full HD.
But Africans, too, have evolved. Gone are the days when we’d say “yes, massa” with a smile and carry bales of cotton for compliments. The winds from Bamako to Ouagadougou now blow with grit. Soldiers in fatigues and civilians in frustration are writing a new history—one of reclamation, self-determination, and, dare I say, swagger.
Breton’s strange confidence that “if one of the putschists’ heads falls, the rest will abandon the vision” is telling. These guys still think Africa is a game of dominoes—knock one, and the rest will follow. But Africa is no longer a game board; it is the player. The pawns have read the playbook.
This is not an article to glorify coups. No. But when desperation becomes a language, people listen to whoever speaks it—whether in suits or uniforms.
The underlying message is simple: Africa is not a problem to be solved but a people to be respected.
So, what’s the takeaway?
Our leaders must wake up. And not the kind of political yawning we see after donor breakfasts. Real awakening. The type that reads our own history, guards our sovereignty, educates our youth, feeds our people, and stops begging for what we already have.
To African leaders: You were not elected to be caretakers of colonial leftovers. You were chosen to be architects of a future worthy of our past.
Beware the flattery of global summits and the sweet poison of aid with a flag on it. The words of our enemies are revealing, but the silence of our leaders is deafening.
And if you ever forget your place in history, just remember: those who think Africa has no history are usually those who fear it the most.

Jamie Carragher (L) has criticised Kudus (R) over poor performances
Former English footballer Jamie Carragher has said that Ghanaian forward Mohammed Kudus’ decline in form has significantly contributed to West Ham United’s struggles in the 2024/2025 season.
He explained that the Black Stars player was outstanding in the 2023/2024 season, scoring many goals and providing assists to aid his side in the Premier League and the Europa League, helping them secure a respectable position.
The Sky Sports pundit stated that Kudus’ dip in form this season has played a pivotal role in West Ham’s poor campaign in the Premier League, which is worrying.
“Well, I see there’s no doubt he’s a quality player who should be playing for a team closer to the top of the table, not near the bottom. But probably one of the reasons why West Ham are where they are this season is because he hasn’t shown the form that he showed last season.
“Last season, he looked fantastic; he just hasn’t looked the same player this season,” he said while speaking on Sky Sports on May 18, 2025.
Carragher also said that he wouldn’t be surprised if Kudus is sold by the club at the end of the season to raise funds, as he is being chased by top European teams.
“So, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a change there in some way, because, as you said, West Ham need the money. But other clubs might think this is an off-season for him.
“Last season was the real cue to say you can get that type of player; maybe it’s a good sign. So it might be the type of situation that maybe works for the two clubs,” he added.
The 24-year-old made a promising start to life in the Premier League following his switch from Ajax in 2023, contributing 14 goals and assists in his debut season.

The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Adam Mutawakilu, has clarified that the company did not enter into any contractual agreement with the embattled former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, but rather with Ghana’s National Security apparatus.
Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues with Keminni Amanor on Sunday, May 18, 2025, Mr. Mutawakilu confirmed that GWL had been paying GHC1.3 million every month since 2018 for secure internet services to what was believed to be a legitimate government agency account.
“Ghana Water Ltd had been paying GHC1.3m every month since 2018 to BNC,” he stated.
“Ghana Water Ltd did not enter into any agreement with any individual (Kwabena Adu-Boahene), but with National Security,” he added.
His comments come on the heels of revelations by Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine, who stated that the funds meant for National Security were allegedly redirected into the private account of BNC Communications Bureau Limited—a company reportedly linked to Adu-Boahene.
The Attorney General had previously disclosed that these payments were part of a wider investigation into financial misconduct involving Adu-Boahene.\

According to Dr. Ayine, instead of channeling the payments to official government accounts, GWL was provided with private account details by Adu-Boahene.
Mutawakilu’s clarification places the spotlight on the nature of the agreement, distancing the company from any direct dealings with individuals, and reaffirming GWL’s position that it acted under the belief that it was transacting with a legitimate state entity.
He also stated during the interview that he is yet to see the agreement between Ghana Water Limited and National Security since assuming office as Managing Director of GWL.

Nigerian content creator Peller has claimed that Ghanaian dancehall artiste Stonebwoy is not on good terms with him.
During a live video session with Rudeboy, one half of the Nigerian music duo P-Square, the two were discussing Rudeboy’s new song, which features Stonebwoy. In the course of the conversation, Rudeboy asked Peller if he knew Stonebwoy.
Peller responded, “Stonebwoy is fighting me.”
According to Peller, his first interaction with Stonebwoy happened during a TikTok livestream. During that session, Peller mentioned that he asked Stonebwoy to fly him to Ghana.
However, Stonebwoy informed him that he was in the United States for a show at the time. Peller then asked if Stonebwoy could instead fly him to the U.S. in a private jet, but Stonebwoy replied that it was already too late.
“I first interacted with him on TikTok livestream where I told him I wanted him to bring me to Ghana, but he said he was in America for a show. Then I asked him to fly me there in a private jet, but he said it was too late,” Peller explained.
Peller further revealed that since Stonebwoy couldn’t bring him to Ghana, he reached out to Shatta Wale, who agreed and eventually brought him over.
“I then messaged Shatta Wale to bring me to Ghana, and he did,” he said.
After hearing the story, Rudeboy offered his perspective, helping Peller understand what might be behind the alleged tension.
He explained that the long-standing rivalry between Stonebwoy’s and Shatta Wale’s fan bases could be the cause of the misunderstanding.
“Now I know where this problem is coming from. I know there’s that rivalry between them, they are not on good terms,” Rudeboy noted.
Peller, upon hearing this, compared the situation to the fan rivalry between Nigerian music stars Davido and Wizkid.

The man (in white shirt) separated two aggrieved individuals during the chaos
A church service in Accra turned chaotic after individuals identifying themselves as a taskforce stormed the premises during worship in the Greater Accra Region.
An individual known as Joojo on X (formerly Twitter) shared a video showing that his congregation was in the middle of worship when the taskforce entered the auditorium and accused them of noise-making.
However, according to Joojo, the congregants were merely clapping during the session without using any musical instruments, making the actions of the taskforce surprising.
In the video, taskforce members can be seen in a heated altercation with some of the church members, which eventually escalated into a brief fight before it was quickly resolved.
The group consisted of both men and women wearing shirts labeled “Taskforce” on the front.
As of now, the identity of the taskforce and the exact reason for their actions remain unclear amid the ongoing confusion.
It will be recalled that the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) recently announced a ban on drumming and noise-making in certain parts of Accra.
The ban is part of preparations for the Homowo Festival, a cultural celebration by the Ga people.
The directive includes restrictions on the use of loudspeakers, drums, tambourines, and other musical instruments, as well as bans on merry-making and funeral rites.
Smuggled cocoa beans have been intercepted in the Volta Region by police
Police in the Volta Region have intercepted a fuel tanker loaded with cocoa beans, in what authorities suspect is part of a larger smuggling operation targeting Ghana’s eastern border with Togo.
The operation occurred on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, in the Peki enclave, following a tip-off.
The vehicle, which was believed to be transporting petrol, was instead found to be concealing a large quantity of cocoa beans.
The tanker, bearing registration number GN 3801-13, was reportedly traveling from Madina in Accra to Jasikan, with its final destination suspected to be Togo, according to initial police investigations.
A police spokesperson, speaking to Graphic Online in Ho on Saturday, May 17, 2025, confirmed that the vehicle had been impounded. The driver, whose identity is being withheld, has been granted bail and is assisting with ongoing investigations.
“The intercepted cocoa beans have been handed over to the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) for proper handling,” the spokesperson said.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for the owner of the tanker, who is currently on the run.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about cross-border smuggling of critical national commodities such as cocoa, and the security risks posed by using legitimate-looking transport vehicles to conceal illicit trade.
Security agencies have pledged to intensify surveillance and border patrols to clamp down on smuggling activities and protect Ghana’s vital export resources.

Ghanaian musician Ayisi, formerly known as A.I., has addressed his prolonged absence from the public eye, revealing he remained active in music despite stepping back from interviews and media platforms.

A viral video showing how some aggrieved Ga youths recently besieged the Dodowa office of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs (GARHC), hooting at its current President, Oboade Notse King Professor Odaifio Welentsi III who doubles as the Paramount Chief of Nungua Traditional Area.
Following a court session by the Judicial Committee of GARHC in Dodowa, the youths were seen in a viral video chasing and shouting insults at the prominent Ga chief.
King Professor Odaifio Welentsi III, accompanied by traditional office holders and police escorts, faced the embarrassing confrontation, which nearly turned physical before police intervention.
The angry youths, some of them clad in white traditional attire, were heard in Ga dialect hurling insults and curses at the chief.
Sources close to GARHC in Dodowa suggest their anger stemmed from perceived bias in a recent chieftaincy case handled by the Judicial Committee of GARHC.
In the video, the group’s leader performed a libation ritual to invoke curses on Oboade Notse King Professor Odaifio Welentsi III and other committee members involved in the disputed ruling.
The exact nature of their grievances remains unclear, but tensions highlight growing discontent over chieftaincy disputes in the region.
The growing corrupt practices and wrong doings currently ongoing at GARHC in Dodowa under leadership of Oboade Notse King Professor Odaifio Welentsi III need an urgent action of the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon Ahmed Ibrahim to safeguard the alarming situation.
The youths have raised concerns about the unending chieftaincy disputes in Greater Accra Region and blamed the escalation of the matter on the rise of corruption practices in the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs.
Following this development, they have called on the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim and the Acting Chief Justice (CJ) of Ghana’s Judiciary, Mr. Paul Baffoe-Bonnie and Greater Accra Regional Minister, Madam Linda Akweley Ocloo to intervene and instruct the Judicial Committee of the GARHC to cease handling chieftaincy matters.
The youths argued that some of the chiefs who sit on the GARHC’s Judicial Committee are themselves embroiled in ongoing legal disputes over their chieftaincy statuses.
They believe it is a violation of legal principles for these chiefs to be involved in adjudicating chieftaincy disputes while their own cases remain pending in the courts.
Recently Oboade Notse King Professor Odaifio Welentsi III has been exposed of attempting to persuade the Acting President of Ngleshie Alata Traditional Council, Nii Armah Kwaofio II to sign the Chieftaincy Declaration (CD) form for Prince Ashiaku Bruce Quaye.
Oboade Notse King Professor Odaifio Welentsi III who doubles as the Paramount Chief Of Nungua Traditional Area is reportedly invited Nii Armah Kwaofio II through the Registrar of GARHC, Mr. Addo Enoch to his house at Nungua in Accra.
The letter invited Nii Armah Kwaofio II was dated September 10, 2021 and that the previous meeting was scheduled on Monday September 13, 2021, according to the one page letter in possession of this news outlet.
The news outlet understands that when Nii Armah Kwaofio II honoured the invitation of GARHC’s President to his house at Nungua, the prominent Ga Chief ordered him [Nii Armah Kwaofio Il] to sign the CD forms to give the traditional legal backing for Prince Ashiaku Bruce Quaye to be gazetted into the register of the chiefs as the Paramount Chief of Ngleshie Alata Traditional Area.
In order to support these illegalities, Nii Armah Kwaofio II was reported to have refused to sign the CD Form for Prince Ashiaku Bruce Quaye and returned home with the reason that the purported installation of Prince Ashiaku Bruce Quaye, who declared himself as the paramount chief of the Ngleshie Alata Traditional is still remains illegal and unlawful.
Although GARHC’s President didn’t succeed in pursuing Nii Armah Kwaofio to sign the CD form for Prince Ashiaku Bruce Quaye, they had adopted another strategies to influence some non-royals of James Town Royal Paramount Stool to sign the CD Forms for Prince Ashiaku Bruce Quaye.
Some months ago, the membership of the GARHC led by Nungua Mantse had supported illegalities of Prince Ashiaku Bruce Quaye by way of performing various rituals to induct embattled Prince Ashiaku Bruce Quaye into the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs which has greeted with legal action against Prince Asharku Bruce Quaye.
But in a quick rebuttal, the accredited elders of the Ngleshie Adanse Clan of the Ngleshie Alata Traditional Area in James Town, Accra, have strongly condemned the recent induction of Prince Asharku Bruce-Quaye into GARHC as Paramount Chief of Ngleshie Alata Traditional Area, explaining that Prince Asharku Bruce-Quaye is not James Town Mantse.

Consequently, the elders accused the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs of supporting illegalities of Prince Asharku Bruce-Quaye who is parading himself as Paramount of the area which situation has created division, tension, insecurity and confusion within Ngleshie Alata Traditional Area.
They indicated that It is therefore absurd and unconscionable to any right thinking person to fathom the reasoning behind what the representatives of traditional areas of Accra in the Regional House of Chiefs and their President have done.
According to the elders, the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs and their President are very much aware of the numerous courts’ cases both civil and traditional ( a current case is in the Kumasi High Court) against Prince Asharku Bruce- Quaye but intentionally went ahead unperturbed to register him among the chiefs recognized by that house.
“Why? What is the reason behind this? How sad. By this act, it has become very clear that the Regional House of Chiefs wants the people of Ngleshie Alata to fight among themselves and kill each other.
“It is amazing to consider for example, an individual from Osu a completely different clan, to be enstooled a chief in Nungua another different clan.
“This is absurd. As already stated supra, Prince Asharku Bruce-Quaye hails from Anumansa otherwise known as Kweikuma Tsoshishi a clan within James Town, but not Adanse Clan. He has no relation in Adanse Clan why is Prince Asharku Bruce- Quaye forcing himself to be seen as an Adanse clan subject,” the elders clarified.
In a strong worded press statement, the elders described the induction as illegal and fraudulent, citing ongoing legal disputes over Bruce-Quaye’s legitimacy.
They provided historical documentary proof to support their claim that Prince Asharku Bruce-Quaye installation was done without following due customary and traditional procedures and that he does not belong to the rightful ruling royal house,Adanse Mantse We, which is next in line to produce a paramount chief.
Accordibg to the elders of the clan, there are two ruling houses in James Town, Adjumanku Dawurampon and Adanse Mantse We.
They explained that these two houses provide the paramount chief on a rotational basis, adding that the late paramount chief of Ngleshie Alata Traditional Area, Oblempon Kojo Ababio V came from the Adjumanku Dawurampon house.
The elders clarified that it is now the turn of Adanse Mantse We to provide a candidate.
“Now, Prince Asharku- Bruce Quaye does not even meet the first criteria for selection.
“He does not hail from Adanse Mantse We. He comes from Anumansa also known as Kwei Kuma Tsoshishi. That basically disqualifies him. Now lets look at the rites he claims he has gone through to become a so called paramount chief.
They also accused Bruce-Quaye of forcefully breaking into the James Town Stool Room to undergo unlawful rites, further invalidating his claim to the title.
They called on the Regional House of Chiefs to reverse his induction, warning that failure to do so could lead to unrest.
With multiple court cases challenging his legitimacy, the elders of Ngleshie Adanse Clan insists that any attempt to impose Bruce-Quaye on the people of Ngleshie Alata Traditional Area will be met with legal action.
The elders cautioned all those involved in trying to force Prince Asharku Quaye on Ngleshie Alata to stop what they are doing and allow the proper customary and traditional things to be done, otherwise there is a real potential of serious trouble erupting.
They fumed that “We will use all options available to us including legal options reverse what has been done and revert back to the status quo ante.”
Additionally, the Registrar at the Dodowa office of GARHC, Mr Addo Enoch and one lady by name Priscilla popularly known as Mammy Osofo including Registrar of Ngleshie Alata Traditional Area, Mr Jeffrey Lomo have also been exposed for wrong doings which had affected effective justice delivery systems in chieftaincy institutions in Accra.
The alarming corrupt practices had informed a growing demand placed on Chieftaincy Minister to muster up the courage to transfer Mr Addo Enoch, Mr Jeffrey Lomo and Priscilla to help settle the long running James Town Royal Paramount Chieftaincy dispute at Ngleshie Alata Traditional Area in Accra.
The call has become very necessary because, according to the information available to this news outlet, Mr Enoch, Mr Lomo and Priscilla, were interfering in the paramount chieftaincy matters in the area.
Mr Addo Enoch was alleged to have played a leading role in wrongful transfer of the former Registrar of Ngleshie Alata Traditional Council, Madam Mercy Asante to the Dodowa office of GARHC, she is working at her current office without any portfolio, making her looks sad and dormant.
The Chieftaincy Minister was asked to commission a full scale of investigations in the illegalities of Mr Addo Enoch and Priscilla at the GARHC by way of inviting Madam Mercy Asante to testify on how she was wrongfully transferred from the office of Ngleshie Alata Traditional Council on the direct influence of Mr Addo Enoch.
The foregoing call on the Sector Minister by a cross section of youth groups and kingmakers follow the current surge of insecurity, tensions and confusions at James Town in Accra, in relation on how Mr Addo Enoch, Mr Jeffrey Lomo and Madam Priscilla were exposed for interfering and influencing various chieftaincy cases in Ngleshie Alata Traditional Council and GARHC.
The three persons were reported to have been conflicting James Town Royal Paramount Stool chieftaincy case at GARHC which situation has becoming a growing concern to youths and kingmakers persistent cases of chieftaincy conflict in Accra.
The three were accused for lending supreme support through President of GARHC, Oboade Notse King Professor Odaifio Welentsi III to Prince Ashiaku Bruce Quaye to use abrupt force to wrongfully take over chieftaincy status in James Town, under the Stool name Obrempong Wetse Kojo II.

“The new name makes Bulgaria far easier to recognise online. We are building a digital image that is more modern, more functional and more distinctive. This is not simply a rebranding exercise but a strategic process that will strengthen the country’s digital footprint and global positioning. In a world in which attention is the most valuable resource, this step is essential,” Borshosh said.
The new domain places Bulgaria in a truly global context, supports its positioning as a tourism destination and greatly simplifies access to information for travellers both inside the country and in key source markets.

In a press release dated Sunday, May 18, 2025, and sighted by GhanaWeb Business, the association stated that the price reduction is aimed at providing relief to customers and supporting the government’s broader efforts to stabilise the economy and reduce the cost of living.
This announcement comes on the back of the consistent appreciation of the cedi against the US dollar on both the interbank and forex markets.
According to the Chairman of the Association, Henry Okyere Jnr, the government’s decisive actions in strengthening the local currency and restoring macroeconomic stability are commendable, hence the association’s intention to respond accordingly.
The association emphasised that the move reflects its commitment to supporting national economic recovery efforts while ensuring that spare parts remain affordable for consumers.
Meanwhile, Okyere Jnr has appealed to all members to comply with the directive on price adjustments, reinforcing their commitment to fair pricing and market stability.

Leading Kenyan lawyer and the country’s former Justice Minister Martha Karua says she has been detained in Tanzania after flying in for the court appearance of opposition leader Tundu Lissu.
Karua said in a social media post that she had been detained at the main international airport and was awaiting deportation, along with two colleagues who had flown in with her. Tanzanian authorities have not yet commented.
Tanzanian politician Lissu is due to appear in court on Monday after being charged with treason last month.
Karua is a respected human rights advocate, and a vocal critic of what she calls “democratic backsliding” in East Africa.
She has also been representing Ugandan opposition politician Kizza Besigye, who was kidnapped in Kenya last year and taken back to his home country to face treason charges.
Like Lissu, he denies the charges, arguing that they are politically motivated.

The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Adam Mutawakilu, has painted a grim picture of the company’s financial and operational health, revealing a massive inherited debt burden alongside alarming levels of water loss and a significant supply deficit in the capital.
Speaking on the RV3’s Hot Issues programme with Keminni Amanor on Sunday, May 18, 2025, Mr. Mutawakilu disclosed the extent of the company’s liabilities, stating, “We inherited over GHC1 billion in debt from the previous government.”
He added that settling this debt would be a lengthy process, estimating, “We will take about three years to settle our debts without expenditure.”
Beyond the financial strain, Mr. Mutawakilu highlighted the staggering amount of water lost daily. As of December 2024, a staggering 52 percent of water produced by GWL – an equivalent of over 150 million gallons daily – goes unaccounted for.
This Non-Revenue Water (NRW) is lost primarily through physical leakages in the aging distribution network and widespread illegal connections. “As of December 2024, 52 percent of water production, equivalent to over 150 million gallons, is untraceable through physical leakages or illegal tracing,” he revealed.

The MD also pointed to a severe production shortfall in the Greater Accra Region, where demand far outstrips current supply.
According to him, Accra requires an estimated 220 million gallons of water daily, but GWL is only able to produce 140 million gallons, leaving an 80 million gallon deficit. “We have a production shortfall because the demand for Accra is 220 million gallons, but we produce 140. Meaning we are not able to meet the demand of Ghanaians in Accra,” he explained.
Mr. Mutawakilu stressed the urgent need for a comprehensive national strategy to tackle water losses, invest in modern infrastructure and technology, and protect water sources to secure Ghana’s water future against growing demand and environmental threats.

The leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, who was elected by the cardinals on May 9, 2025, was officially inaugurated on Sunday, May 18, 2025, nine days after his election.
At the inauguration, Pope Leo XIV was formally bestowed with several sacred symbols of his office, including the pallium and the fisherman’s ring.
The pallium, according to an article published by CNN, is a “lamb’s wool vestment symbolising his pastoral care for the Church,” while the fisherman’s ring “symbolises the Pope’s authority as the successor of St. Peter, a fisherman by trade and whom Catholics regard as the first pope.”
The ring, presented to Pope Leo XIV by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, is made of gold and bears an image of St. Peter fishing.
Traditionally, the ring of a deceased pope is taken to the College of Cardinals, where it is scratched or broken to ensure it can never be used again. This act symbolises the end of the pope’s papacy.
In the past, the ring served as the official seal for papal documents, and its destruction prevented forgery.
Details of Pope Leo XIV’s fisherman’s ring, as shared by the Vatican, reveal an image of St. Peter engraved on the outer band, with “Leo XIV” and the Pope’s coat of arms engraved on the inner side.
Visuals from St. Peter’s Square, where the inaugural Mass was held, captured the moment Cardinal Tagle, a close friend of the Pope, presented him with the fisherman’s ring.
After receiving it, Pope Leo XIV was seen gazing at the ring in a moment of solemn reflection.

In a significant breakthrough in the fight against illegal mining, the special police team against illegal mining intercepted and seized four excavators, two of which were reportedly being escorted by armed men believed to be military personnel.
According to the Director of Special Operations at the Police Headquarters, ACP Eric Asiedu, the operation was launched following credible intelligence received indicating suspicious movement of heavy-duty mining equipment outside the Samreboï township.
Led by ASP Mr. Adorye, the team of police officers proceeded to a location where they intercepted two low-bed trucks, each carrying an excavator.

The team had early on conducted a successful raid at a large illegal mining site identified as Akani, situated on the outskirts of Asankragua.
The operation resulted in the arrest of nine (9) suspects and the seizure of mining equipment being used for illegal mining activities.
This operation forms part of the team’s sustained efforts to complement the vision of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) in combating illegal mining and safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources.
Police have since secured all equipment involved.

One of the key features of the second John Dramani Mahama government is the appointment of top academics to lead key sectors of Ghana’s economy.
Ironically, most of these academics are from the alma mater of the president, the University of Ghana (UG), with their appointments being seen by many as merited.
These academics, who include both known members of the ruling National Democratic Congress and “neutrals”, come with the expertise that many believe will help transform the state entities they have been appointed to lead.
Below are brief details of some of the University of Ghana lecturers who have gained appointments in Mahama’s government:
Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse
Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, who was appointed by President Mahama as the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Environmental Protection Agency, is a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana and the head of its Physics Department.
Professor Browne Klutse is the first female full professor of Physics at the University of Ghana in the 75 years of the university.
She is a climate change scientist and has set many records in her career. She became the first female to head the Physics Department of the University of Ghana in 2023.
She is also the youngest professor of Physics in Ghana and the first Ghanaian to be elected to the UN IPCC (United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) Bureau as the Vice-Chair of Working Group 1.
She is a member of the Task Group on Data Support for Climate Change Assessments (TG-Data); the Scientific Board of the International Basic Sciences Programme (IBSP) of UNESCO; and the Research Advisory Panel of the South African Weather Service. She previously worked as the Remote Sensing Manager at the GIS and Climate Centre and as a senior research scientist at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission.
Professor Browne Klutse has also been very active politically. She has contested the NDC parliamentary primaries in the Abura Asebu Kwamankese Constituency in the Central Region on two occasions.
Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse was born on May 23, 1981, at Nyanfeku Ekroful in the Central Region and holds a BSc in Physics from the University of Cape Coast. She went on to read BSc Physics and a PhD in Climatology at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.
Professor Michael Kpessa-Whyte
Professor Michael Kpessa-Whyte, another academic at the University of Ghana, was appointed as the Acting Director-General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA) by President John Dramani Mahama.
Professor Kpessa-Whyte is a research fellow at the History and Politics Section of the Institute of African Studies (IAS), University of Ghana.
He is a distinguished academic and policy expert with extensive experience in governance, public policy analysis, and social democracy.
He holds a PhD in Political Science with a focus on Comparative Public Policy from McMaster University; a Master’s degree in Political Science, specialising in International Relations, from Brock University; and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Ghana.
Additionally, he was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy at the University of Saskatchewan (2009–2010).
Professor Kpessa-Whyte has also been active politically, playing key roles in the running of the National Democratic Congress. He was one of the two agents who represented the party at the Electoral Commission’s National Collation Centre for the 2020 election.
Professor Ransford Edward Van Gyampo
President Mahama also appointed Professor Ransford Edward Van Gyampo as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority.
Gyampo is a professor of Political Science and the Founding Director of the Centre for European Studies at the University of Ghana, with 20 years of teaching and research experience.
He holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Ghana and Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts, USA; an MPhil in Political Science from the University of Ghana; and a B.A. in Political Science, also from the University of Ghana.
Professor Gyampo previously served as a senior research fellow at the Governance Unit of the Institute of Economic Affairs, the Coordinator of the Ghana Political Parties Programme, as well as a member of Ghana’s Electoral Reforms Committee.
He also served as a visiting scholar at the Department of Government and International Relations at the University of South Florida, United States of America (USA), and as a visiting professor at the Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of Bristol.
Professor Gyampo is not a known member of the ruling National Democratic Congress and was an ardent critic of the first Mahama government.
Professor Kobby Mensah
Another UG professor who has been offered a job by President Mahama is Professor Kobby Mensah, who was appointed the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Tourism Development Company.
Professor Mensah is an associate professor at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) and a distinguished expert in tourism marketing.
His appointment comes at a crucial time as Ghana seeks to further position itself as a leading tourism destination in Africa.
His long-standing involvement in promoting tourism within the country is marked by his successful initiatives, most notably the Destination Legon Tourism Marketing Exhibition.
Beyond his academic endeavours, Prof Mensah has worked on developing innovative strategies to market Ghana’s tourism potential, including initiatives to improve the country’s infrastructure, cultural heritage, and branding.
He is an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, UK, and a member of the Political Marketing Specialist Group (PMSG), coordinating the Ghana Political Marketing Group (Ghana PMG).
Professor Mensah holds a PhD in Journalism from the University of Sheffield, UK, and an MSc in International Marketing from Sheffield Hallam University, also in the UK.
Professor Lord Mensah
Professor Lord Mensah, also of the University of Ghana Business School, was appointed the Acting Head of the Local Government Service.
Professor Mensah is a full professor of Financial Economics at the University of Ghana Business School.
He holds a PhD in Applied Economics-Finance from the University of Antwerp in Belgium, an MSc in Financial Mathematics from the University of Kaiserslautern in Germany, and a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
Beyond academia, Professor Mensah has consulted for major institutions such as the Central Bank of Nigeria, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Bank of Ghana.
He also serves as Executive Director of the African Centre for Development Finance and is a respected voice in Ghana’s economic policy space, regularly featured in national media and corporate circles.

MC Portfolio is an entertainment pundit and media personality
Entertainment pundit and media personality MC Portfolio has suggested that King Paluta’s failure to win Artiste of the Year at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) may be linked to his perceived political affiliation with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking in an interview on Onua FM, MC Portfolio claimed that the artiste’s association with the opposition party could have negatively influenced the voting process.
“I believe the political affiliation people placed on King Paluta affected him. It affected him because we saw how the NPP adopted King Paluta and used him for a regional tour,” he said.
He went on to explain that voting could be influenced by personal biases, especially if someone on the voting board disagrees with an artiste’s political connections.
“If someone is on the board, the person could just have an issue with you for no reason and can use that to vote against you without even considering your work,” he stated.
According to him, although the award board is expected to be fair and transparent, its members are human and may be swayed by political sentiments.
“No matter how you think the board is transparent, they are humans, and affiliation will come into play. Therefore, if someone does not agree with your affiliation with a political party, it could affect you,” he added.
To support his claim, MC Portfolio referenced a statement made by former Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mark Okraku-Mantey, who is also a respected figure in Ghana’s entertainment industry.
Okraku-Mantey had previously remarked that the NPP’s use of King Paluta’s Makoma song during their 2024 campaign may have contributed to the party’s loss in the general election.
“Just recently, our former deputy minister, who is an iconic member of the Ghanaian music industry, even said King Paluta’s song, which his party used during the campaign, played a part in the party going into opposition. So don’t you think if such a person is on the board, how would things play out?” MC Portfolio questioned.

From L to R: EL, KiDi and King Promise are Ghanaian artistes to use the phrase
It has been exactly a week since the popular phrase “I will be back” once again found its way to the lips of many Ghanaians, especially music lovers.
The phrase seems to have become a mantra at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), as nearly every award winner at the just-ended 2025 edition echoed the same words during their acceptance speeches.
At the forefront was King Promise, who, after winning several awards, confidently used the phrase during his speech while anticipating the most coveted title of the night, Artiste of the Year.
But where did this now-iconic phrase originate?
The genesis of “I will be back” can be traced to rapper E.L, who first used it during the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (now the Telecel Ghana Music Awards). However, the phrase truly gained traction in 2021 when KiDi, despite sweeping four awards, Highlife Song, Best Afrobeat Song, Best Afrobeat Artiste, and EP of the Year, failed to win Artiste of the Year.
That night, KiDi repeatedly assured the audience he would return to claim the top prize. His cheeky confidence and sense of entitlement became a memorable moment, especially after the award eventually went to gospel sensation Diana Hamilton.
Since then, “I’ll be back” has become a recurring phrase at the TGMAs, used by hopeful nominees and winners alike.
Even at the 2025 ceremony, King Promise continued the tradition. After his first win of the night, he said: “Super, super thankful for this award. Shoutout to all the fans. It’s because of you people we dey here. Big love, I’ll be back.”
Following the event, KiDi took to social media to poke fun at the widespread use of the phrase, writing: “I for start dey take royalties for ‘I’ll be back.'”

As a permanent fix to decongest Accra, the Government will soon begin the design and feasibility study for a new city, President John Dramani Mahama, has said.
He said some of the government offices and agencies would be moved out of Accra to the new city.
“I believe that this city will be located somewhere on the Accra plains from Bundasi, straddling across Greater Accra, Eastern Region and Volta regions. The city will straddle three regions,” President Mahama stated in his remarks at a grand durbar of the Chiefs and People of the Greater Accra Region at Dodowa.
The “Thank You Tour” is to enable the President to express gratitude to the Chiefs and People of the Greater Accra Region and Ghanaians for their massive support for him and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general election.
President Mahama reiterated that the new city would stretch to the banks of the Volta River and there would be a railway link and an expressway that would link the new city to Accra.
Touching on Chieftaincy Disputes, the President said while governments constitutionally could not interfere in the internal matters of traditional institutions, they were deeply concerned by the impact of unresolved disputes on the development of our traditional areas in Greater Accra.
He therefore urged all traditional councils to utilise the structures of the National and Regional Houses of Chiefs to resolve matters of chieftaincy with dignity, true dialogue and mutual respect.
He said the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs stands ready to support and facilitate any resolution mechanisms fairly and neutrally.
President Mahama said one issue that was repeatedly raised during his engagement with communities across the Greater Accra Region was the matter of state lands and ancestral Ga-Dangme lands.
He said these concerns were valid and that he understood the historical injustices and emotional depths tied to the matter.
President Mahama noted that as a result, one of the first directives he issued upon assuming office as President was to direct the Lands Commission to halt all sales and processing of all government lands. He reiterated that the directive was still in force.
The President said following the receipt of the Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) Committee report, the Attorney General initiated investigations into the alleged looting of prime government and Ga-Dangme lands that were sold to individuals with political influence, some for as low as GH¢45,000, saying, “meanwhile, these are lands whose values run into millions of cedis.”
President Mahama said it was in that spirit that he announced that following these investigations, they would consider the formation of a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the acquisitions, allocation, and use of public lands in Greater Accra.
He said this Commission would work with the chiefs, legal experts, historians, and affected communities to produce a comprehensive report, and this outcome would guide a lasting and just solution to a matter that had lasted for far too long.
Prophet Adjei (R) has prophesied that Kudus (L) will be injured at the 2026 World Cup
Ghanaian prophet Telvin Sowah Adjei has revealed that the Black Stars will qualify for the 2026 World Cup but might be eliminated due to injury concerns.
According to him, the team will qualify from the group stage to the quarter-final stage, but Mohammed Kudus will be fouled, resulting in a knee injury with Kamaldeen Sulemana also likely to suffer similar fate.

Ghanaian lawyer and Convention People’s Party (CPP) member Kwame Jantuah has weighed in on the Sammy Gyamfi dollar gift controversy, calling the politician’s actions wrong but arguing that the intense public backlash is unwarranted.
Member of Parliament for Walewale, Tia Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, has expressed skepticism about the continued appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi, warning that the currency has likely peaked.
He urged the government to shift its focus from expecting further gains to maintaining the current stability.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, May 17, the MP observed that the pace of the cedi’s appreciation had slowed significantly since mid-week, with early market indicators suggesting a possible reversal.
“There is no way we can have a further appreciation of the cedi. If you observe the movement from Tuesday, it has not moved as fast as it was.”
Citing specific forex rates, he noted that as of Friday, May 16, the dollar was trading at GH₵12.40, but by the morning of Saturday, May 17, it had edged up to GH₵12.44 — indicating that the cedi has likely reached its strongest point in the current cycle.
“It has gotten to its best performing point. For me, I will be very surprised if you give it a stimulus that it will go further down again.
“I am fortified in this belief because it is also coming down, so it means people are now gravitating towards the dollar. Now we should try to ensure stability. The cedi will not go down further; it will take a miracle for the cedi to come down to 12 or 11,” he said.
The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has dismissed claims that its Minister, John Jinapor, is engaging in scaremongering over the country’s energy challenges, asserting that his recent statements to Parliament were factual and transparent.
The allegations were made by the Member of Parliament for Walewale, Tia Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, who accused Jinapor of using alarmist tactics in managing the ongoing power crisis.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issueon Saturday, May 17, Kabiru criticized what he described as the minister’s persistent fear-based messaging, urging a shift toward more constructive communication.
“Since he assumed office, it has been one alarm after the other,” Kabiru stated. “And I understand he is doing that because it gives him the leeway to award contracts without passing through procurement.
“My intelligence and oversight suggest that over GH₵200 million worth of sole-sourcing has been done without going through the right process. He should stop the scaremongering and be more of a hope monger.”
In a response on the same programme, the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Richmond Rockson, refuted the claims, insisting that Minister Jinapor’s remarks were aimed at providing Parliament with a candid overview of the energy sector’s current state.
“The Minister for Energy and Green Transition is not engaged in scaremongering,” Rockson stated.
He explained that the Minister’s comments were delivered during a briefing to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy on Thursday, May 15, during which he addressed several pressing issues—including Ghana’s rising energy sector debt, which stood at $3.1 billion as of December 2024—and concerns about fuel availability for thermal plants.
“He also disclosed that at the time he was speaking, it was left with 2.6 days, and that his headache was how to find money and that fuel had been procured,” Rockson explained. “It’s unfortunate that that point the minister made was not captured, but consistently the media reported the 2.6 days and failed to report that the minister there and then said that fuel had been procured.”
Rockson emphasised that the Minister’s statements were a call for deeper reforms to ensure long-term sustainability in the sector.
“[He said] We need to find sustainable ways to procure fuel because we can’t keep going back to the Ministry of Finance, and there are structural reforms that we should look at. If it means that we should take a second look at the tariff structure, which is currently before Cabinet, we will do that,” Rockson added.
Rejecting Kabiru’s characterisation of Jinapor’s remarks as fear tactics, Rockson reiterated the Minister’s commitment to transparency.
“So it is not accurate if he [Kabiru Mahama] keeps saying that the minister is scaremongering. What the minister did was to be truthful to the parliamentary select committee,” he emphasised.

He made the remarks in his welcome address at a durbar of the Chiefs and People of the Greater Accra Region in Dodowa during President Mahama’s “Thank You Tour” of the Greater Accra Region.
The National “Thank You Tour” is to enable the President express gratitude to Ghanaians for the massive support for him and the National Democratic Congress during the December 7, 2024 general election.
He congratulated President Mahama on his historic election victory and come back; declaring that his remarkable election signified two important things the strong faith the majority of Ghanaians had in him and their dissatisfaction with his opponents.
“Having previously occupied the office of the President and faced a defeat, your extensive political experience positions you to foster hope, create a listening government, promote national unity and most importantly drive socio-economic development,” King Professor Odaifio Welentsi said.
“Your acknowledgment of past mistakes during your tenure which contributed to your 2016 defeat reflects your integrity as a politician and a diplomat willing to learn from experience.”
He said failing to heed these lessons could not only jeopardize the President’s Party’s chances in the next election 2028 but potentially tarnish his reputation permanently.
He said, politics aside, basic courtesy and ethics required that once elected to represent the people a leader must express gratitude.
This, he said, was because the people had placed a great deal of trust in President Mahama and demonstrated their belief in his capabilities to better their lots.
King Professor Odaifio Welentsi said it was essential not only to express gratitude but also to show sincerity in fulfilling his responsibilities, adding that doing so would help ensure that those who voted for him feel they made the right choice.
He said the President’s “Thank You Tour”, across all regions was a vital and commendable initiative.
“Although I serve as a traditional leader with a busy schedule, I sometimes disguise myself to observe the discussions on social media,” the Nungua Mantse said.
“One hilarious remark they often make is questioning why leaders vanish into thin air after being elected but are quick to engage with ordinary people in washing, eating, playing lute, a lot, a lot among others.”
He said while these comments might seem funny, they carried a serious message; thus, the masses expect some level of gratitude or appreciation from the leaders after their election to office.
He pleaded with the President to ask his appointees to listen to the people.
“It is division of labour. I therefore urge everyone to view this “Thank You Tour” as the President and his government’s extension of bond and commitment to serve you and the sign of assurance that he will always be there for you when you need him most.”
He said it should be established that this “Thank You Tour” was not limited to those who voted for candidate Mahama but it also extended to his well wishers and admirers.
“Ultimately, Ghana must come first before politicians and political parties. This victory belongs to all of us,” he stated.
He said it was a testament to the power of unity, collaboration and the belief that together they could achieve great things.
