Rwanda confirms talks with US over receiving deported migrants

Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe, speaks next to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe, speaks next to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio

Rwanda’s foreign minister confirmed that his country had entered discussions to receive immigrants deported from the United States, less than a year after a similar plan with Britain had failed.

“It has not yet reached a stage where we can say exactly how things will proceed, but the talks are ongoing,” Olivier Nduhungirehe told state broadcaster Rwanda TV in an interview late on Sunday. “Still in the early stages.”

Last week, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he was searching for more countries to take in people as the administration of President Donald Trump steps up efforts to deport immigrants who entered the US without documents and other noncitizens.

“We are working with other countries to say, ‘We want to send you some of the most despicable human beings to your countries. Will you do that as a favour to us?’ And the farther away from America, the better, so they can’t come back across the border,” Rubio said during a televised cabinet meeting as he was seated next to Trump.

Rwanda confirmed the talks after US media quoted unnamed officials from both countries as saying they were discussing the scheme. The US is also reportedly considering Libya as another destination.

Reports said the US wants to pay Rwanda to accept migrants with criminal records who have served their sentences in the US and potentially integrate them into society with stipends and job assistance to discourage them from returning to the US.

In March, the Trump administration deported an Iraqi national to Rwanda in a transfer that could serve as a model for the future, according to multiple US outlets quoting officials and citing documents.

The efforts are in line with Trump’s crackdown on immigration, which started immediately after he took office for a second four-year term in January.

His administration has been facing legal battles as it tries to continue sending accused gang members to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador without due process.

Amid the ongoing controversy over the wrongful deportation of a Salvadoran citizen living in Maryland to El Salvador, Trump last month said he would also like to deport “homegrown criminals” to the country, meaning US citizens. He also directed the opening of a detention centre at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to hold up to 30,000 people whom he called the “worst criminal aliens”.

In an interview that aired on Sunday, Trump said he “didn’t know” whether people in the US are entitled to due process rights guaranteed by the country’s Constitution.

The Rwandan and US governments have yet to officially confirm any of the details of their talks, but if an agreement is reached, it would not be the first time Rwanda would accept migrants expelled from the West.

The country had an agreement with the United Kingdom to take in migrants expelled by the British government, but the plan faced numerous legal challenges and was deemed unlawful by the British Supreme Court in a November 2023 ruling.

The then-newly elected Labour government scrapped the deal in July, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer labelling it a “gimmick”. Rwanda is still seeking 50 million pounds ($66m) in payments from the UK over the cancelled deal.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has warned that some people sent to Rwanda could be returned to countries from which they had fled and could face dangers, including death.

Rwanda has denied the allegations and accused the UNHCR of lying.

2025 TGMA red carpet session: No invitation, no appearance

The 26th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) is taking a new turn as organisers implement restrictions on who can appear on the red carpet.

This year, only celebrities and dignitaries who have been officially invited will be allowed onto the red carpet.

According to the organisers, there will be two separate red carpet sessions: one for general media interviews and photoshoots, and the main session where the iconic “Who are you wearing?” interviews will take place. To appear on the main red carpet—which will be televised—an official invitation is required.

This move aims to bring order and professionalism to the red carpet proceedings.

Over the years, many have raised concerns about the quality of red carpet appearances, with some criticising the inclusion of so-called ‘celebrities’ and the lack of proper curation, which often extended the duration unnecessarily.

Others have also expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of outfits showcased, describing many as subpar.

With the new directive, the 2025 TGMA red carpet promises a more polished and organised experience.

The 26th Telecel Ghana Music Awards is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre. Produced by Charterhouse, the event is brought to you by Guinness, British Council, Close-Up, KPMG, and TV3, and powered by Telecel – Connecting Energies.

Govt to reverse names of Public Universities changed under Akufo-Addo

0

The Mahama government is preparing to introduce a new bill in Parliament to rename the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) and several other public universities across the country.

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, made the announcement during the swearing-in ceremony of the Governing Council of CKT-UTAS in Accra.

CKT-UTAS, established in 2021 to provide students with practical and technical skills for the global job market, has faced various infrastructure challenges affecting its academic development. Additionally, the university’s name has drawn mixed reactions from the public, with some stakeholders opposing it from the beginning.

He added that this move forms part of a broader initiative to review and potentially rename several public universities established or renamed during the tenure of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

“We have had extensive consultations with the academic community, traditional rulers, alumni associations, students, and civil society. As a result, the name C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences is likely to change—possibly reverting to the original vision.

“There will be a general bill to consider the renaming of several public universities that were renamed or established during former President Akufo-Addo’s administration,” Haruna stated.

Haruna Iddrisu clarified that the government’s proposal to rename several public universities is not intended to undermine the legacy of individuals after whom these institutions were named.

“This is not to say those individuals do not deserve recognition, but the renaming will aim to reflect the foundational ethos and historical identities of the institutions,” he said.

Among the universities likely to be affected by the review are the University of Mines and Technology and the Abdulai Salifu University. The proposed changes form part of a broader initiative to reassess the naming of public universities that were renamed or established during the administration of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The government is expected to table a bill in Parliament soon to formalise the renaming process.

The Bono Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe aka Abronye DC, described wealthy businessman and top party official Kennedy Agyapong, as a greedy and dishonest individual.

Speaking in an interview addressing the worsening beef between the two NPP stalwarts, Abronye said Kennedy Agyapong was a nobody until former President Kufuor showered him with contracts that catapulted him to wealth.

The Head Coach of Medeama SC, Ibrahim Tanko, has dismissed reports suggesting that defender Kamaradini Mamudu is set to leave the club at the end of the season.

The 22-year-old has been in impressive form this season, earning a recent call-up to the senior national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.

His performances have sparked speculation about a potential move away from the Ghana Premier League former champions.

However, speaking after Medeama’s 3-1 victory over Nations FC last Saturday, Coach Tanko clarified that he was unaware of any offers for the player.

“I’m not aware of any interest from clubs outside. Mamudu is one of the pillars of this team,” he stated. “That’s why he’s a national team player and he’s doing very well. But I always say it’s not about an individual — it’s about teamwork.”

Tanko highlighted Mamudu’s attacking contributions, noting his goal-scoring record despite being a defender. He explained that the defender’s tactical role often saw him operating like a midfielder when Medeama were in possession, which had contributed to his goal tally.

“I’m not surprised he’s scoring a lot of goals. When we have the ball, he plays almost like a midfielder,” the coach added.

Addressing calls for more Medeama players to be considered for the national team, Tanko noted that it was not his place to make recommendations but acknowledged his relationship with the national team coaches.

“I don’t think I have to recommend him. The national team coaches are watching. They are my friends, and if we’re discussing players, I will certainly speak well of Prosper Boakye,” he said.

Mahama designates Ofosu-Adjare to lead Ghana delegation to Global Entrepreneurship Congress 2025 in US

0

President John Dramani Mahama has officially designated Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, to represent him and lead Ghana’s high-level delegation to the Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC) 2025, taking place in Indiana, USA from June 2–5, 2025.

The 2025 GEC is hosted by the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) under the auspices of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, and will bring together thousands of entrepreneurs, policymakers, investors, and innovation leaders from over 200 countries.

The Congress aims to accelerate new ideas, drive economic growth, and expand global prosperity through entrepreneurship.

GEC is the world’s premier cross-sector gathering focused on empowering startups and scaling innovation ecosystems. Past host cities have included Dubai, Istanbul, Johannesburg, Kansas City, Milan, and Rio de Janeiro. Indianapolis becomes the second U.S. city to host since the Congress’s inception in 2009.

The 2025 theme, “The Bold Transforms the World,” emphasizes the transformative power of entrepreneurship.

“I believe President Mahama’s decision to designate Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare underscores Ghana’s strong commitment to advancing entrepreneurship and private sector-led growth as a cornerstone of its economic transformation agenda,” said Stephen Gyasi-Kwaw, Country Founder of GEN-Ghana.

“The Minister is expected to participate in the GEC Ministerial Summit and engage in strategic bilateral meetings, investment forums, and high-level dialogues focused on advancing innovation and job creation.”

The Ghana delegation will comprise representatives from government, private sector, entrepreneurial support organizations, and the Ghanaian diaspora. They will showcase Ghana’s investment potential, promote innovations in agribusiness, and explore new partnerships to drive inclusive economic growth.

Participation in GEC Indiana aligns with Ghana’s international economic diplomacy agenda to elevate its startup ecosystem, build capacity for MSMEs, and strengthen public-private partnerships globally.

#SaveTheJudiciaryDemo: We will fight with our blood to oppose Mahama – Nartey

0

Former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, Ebenezer Nartey, has said that members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will do everything possible to prevent the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from removing the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.

Speaking with Roselyn Felli on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning, Mr. Nartey vowed to defend the judiciary even at the cost of his life, adding that he and other members of the NPP will fight with their blood legally to oppose any attempts by President John Dramani Mahama’s administration to dismiss the CJ.

“Some of us will fight with our blood, and we will resist any attempt by the current president, lawfully, to have a change of mind and hide behind certain groups of people to go to the Supreme Court for interpretation of his tenure of office,” he said on Monday, May 5, 2025.

The former MP made these declarations amidst the party’s ongoing demonstration dubbed ‘Save the Judiciary’ against the suspension of Justice Torkornoo by the president.

Mr. Nartey emphasised that individuals who made the petition to the president have no basis for their claims.

“The issues raised by those people who petitioned the president are useless and baseless. There is no sense in the issues that they have raised,” he said.

Renowned Media Personalities Honoured On World Press Freedom Day

Some renowned journalists and institutions last Friday were honoured by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), on the celebration of World Press Freedom Day, for their contributions to the development of media and press freedom over the years.

The awardees who were recognised and received citations at the event include Kabral Blay Amihere, Gifty Afenyi Dadzie, Dr. Charles Wereko Brobbey, Prof. Kwame Karikari, Adwoa Yeboah Afari, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, Elizabeth Ohene and Ben Ephson.

Other individuals including Sam Jonah, Bright Blewu, Kwasi Afriyie-Badu, Cameron Duodu, Crystal Djirackor and Wilnar and Alex Quarmyne were also recognised for their contributions to media development in Ghana.

World Press Freedom Day, first declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, is marked every May 3 to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression.

Individuals and institutions who were also recognised for their support over the years include the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), US Embassy, Unilever Ghana, Innolink and the Electoral Commission.

The rest are Frederich Ebert Foundation, Amakye Dede, Alex Dadey, Chairman, KGL Group of Companies, Dr. Paul Fynn, Chancellor of the Wisconsin University College, and the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), while former GJA President Mr. Ransford Tetteh and Mr. Peter Martey Agbeko were also honoured.

Edward Adeti, a journalist with the Fourth Estate who was named PAV Ansah Journalist of the Year for his significant contribution to journalism, was awarded a cash amount of GH¢50,000.

Speaking at the event, Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, highlighted the need for journalists to take a solemn reflection on Ghana’s low press freedom rankings, attributing it to sometimes the unwarranted attacks on journalists among others.

“These incidents were deeply regrettable,” he said, “and must serve as a reminder that the protection of journalists is not optional, but rather a sacred constitutional duty.”

While acknowledging the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its importance to work in recent times, he said it could also pose a potential risk to work rather than providing support.

He, therefore, called on media professionals not to overlook scrutiny and deal with such challenges with vigilance and integrity.

The minister also assured the public of government’s commitment to conclude investigations and secure justice for investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, who was murdered.

“These acts of impunity will not define our future. We remain unwavering in our commitment to protecting journalists and upholding their constitutional freedoms,” he stressed.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu further said press freedom must not “swing with political cycles but grounded in law”, while calling on security agencies, media owners, political actors, civil society, and political parties among others to safeguard journalists’ rights.

He also commended the awardees for their dedication and commitment to the media profession, and reaffirmed government’s support for a free and responsible press.

The President of GJA, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, in his opening address, also reiterated the need for caution in the use of AI given how it could affect the credibility of the media, despite the opportunities associated with its usage.

Mr. Dwumfour also said though the GJA would not countenance attacks on journalists, it shall also not condone irresponsible practices in the media.

He, therefore, asked Ghanaians to support journalists to help build a free, vibrant, resilient and innovative media landscape committed to serving the public in a rapidly evolving AI era.

The GJA President further hinted of plans by the Association to rename the Best Radio News Reporter award category after Dr. Charles Wereko- Brobby, popularly known as ‘Tarzan’, for his immense contribution to radio broadcast in Ghana.

The ceremony, which also brought together retired and practicing journalists from various media organisations across the country, was held under the theme: “Reporting in Brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media”.

Agnes Owusu needs help to undergo brain tumour surgery

0

Twenty-one year old Miss Agnes Owusu, a budding young journalist on internship with The Ghanaian Times, is in dire need of financial support in excess of GH¢160, 000.00 or $12,000.00 to enable her to undergo brain tumour surgery.
Consequently, she has appealed to the general public to come to her aid either in cash or in kind to enable her to undergo a successful surgery, and contributions could be made to the Times Needy Fund, UBA Kaneshie North Industrial Area Account number 00103068701511.
She has been diagnosed with a brain tumour located between her brainstem and the posterior part of her brain.
Her medical report signed by Consultant Neurosurgeon of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge), Dr Emmanuel Yao Voado, and copied to The Ghanaian Times, explained that her condition had further been “complicated by hydrocephalus” a diagnosis which has affected her general well-being.
The report said prior to her diagnosis, she was experiencing a series of alarming symptoms, including severe headaches, vomiting, and swelling in her cheek.
Her doctors have warned that without urgent surgery to be conducted at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, these symptoms could return and worsen, possibly leading to seizures, balance issues, paralysis, or even loss of consciousness.
According to Dr Voada, the surgery would require the removal of the tumor which was critical and time-sensitive, however, it would come at a cost.
The surgery is estimated to cost in excess of GH¢160,000 (approximately USD $12,000), unfortunately, the amount was far beyond the means of Agnes and her family.
The Ghanaian Times through this publication is thus soliciting for support towards her surgery to enable her return to duty safely.
Already she had undergone the ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement, which was successfully performed on March 27, 2025.
The shunt placement which cost about GH¢31, 000.00 was funded by her colleagues in the newsroom with some benevolent friends.
Following the surgery, her headaches, vomiting, and neck heaviness resolved and was successfully discharged on April 3, 2025.
However, her doctors have warned that the symptoms of tiredness and short-sightedness had persisted and was anticipated that, as the brain tumour continued to grow, her previous symptoms were likely to return and worsen, potentially accompanied by additional complications such as seizures, balance difficulties, paralysis, and loss of consciousness.
Despite the overwhelming challenges, Miss Owusu said she remains determined and hopeful.
She said her dream was not only to recover but to return to journalism, continue her work, and be a voice for others in her community.
“The estimated cost of the tumour removal is far beyond my means, I am therefore reaching out to anyone who can offer support be it individuals or organisations.
I understand that it is a lot to ask, but I am not just fighting for my life, I am fighting for the chance to continue pursuing my passion for journalism and making a difference in my community,” Miss Owusu said in a statement appealing for help.
Miss Owusu, who is a level 400 student at the University of Media Arts and Communication (UniMAC) is fighting not just for her life, but for the chance to keep making a difference.
Any contribution, no matter how small, would bring Agnes one step closer to the life-saving treatment she urgently needs.
Beyond contributing financially to her cause, it is the hope of The Ghanaian Times that her story would be shared to help reach others who might be able to help.
Miss Owusu is a passionate young journalist who has dedicated her life to telling stories that matter, however, today she requires the help of others to fight for her own story—a fight for survival, health, and hope.

Beyoncé was torn between choosing Jay-Z and another ‘industry guy’

In her recently released Matriarch memoir, Tina Knowles recalled a time when her daughter Beyoncé was torn between choosing Jay-Z, who was pursuing her at the time, and another industry guy she was simultaneously talking to.

Knowles in her memoir said that her daughter and now-husband Jay-Z were initially friends when they established contact in the early 2000s, US Weekly reported.

“Beyoncé had developed a friendship with him, solely over the phone,” Knowles wrote. “They provided good counsel to each other as they discussed the industry, each sharing a singular confidence in their artistic vision.”

Knowles said she invited Jay-Z to come around for dinner when he arrived for a concert in their native Houston. “As Beyoncé and Jay then kept up with each other in calls, the friendship deepened,” Knowles revealed. “She would tell me, ‘He’s just so nice.’”

But Knowles recalled that “another guy in the industry” was also trying to establish a romantic relationship with her daughter at the time, adding when Jay-Z and that individual were coming to Los Angeles to visit Beyoncé while she was on set for 2002’s Austin Powers in Goldmember movie, she asked for advice on her next line of action.

“‘Well, who do you like the most?’” Knowles wrote about the question she asked Beyoncé. “‘Who do you enjoy talking to more?’ I watched her think. It was Jay. Isn’t it humbling how love can begin with such a simple feeling? You like talking to someone over the phone. You’re 21 years old and you can’t know someday you will take that love to the stars, but it begins with such a small instinct.”

As the story goes, Beyoncé went in for Jay-Z, with Knowles writing that she eventually met the trailblazing rapper’s mother Gloria Carter and his other family members when their relationship “got more serious.”

“That was the start of the Carter and Knowles families joining as one family, and we are all very close to this day,” she wrote, per US Weekly. “Our gatherings would become parties, rich with laughter and storytelling, drinking and dancing. In the Bible it says to eat, drink, and be merry, and that’s what our evenings are like with the Carters.”

Beyoncé and Jay-Z got married in a private ceremony at their home in 2008. “They had the wedding at their house on April 4 because it was the only place that we knew it wouldn’t get out,” Knowles wrote.

“We had a lady make white curtains to cover the walls and windows, right up to the 25-foot ceilings. … The details are my daughter and son-in-law’s, but what I will say is that I joined Jay’s grandmother and mother in cooking all the food. We did soul food, of course, the best food for a night of dancing and family love.”

And though Knowles did not provide deep insight into her daughter’s relationship with Jay-Z, she said she regards him and Tim Weatherspoon (Kelly Rowland’s husband) as her sons, per US Weekly.

“They are true blessings, and I could not ask for better providers and protectors of my daughters and their children, and I am always touched that their sense of protection extends to me,” she wrote.

“Jay is an example for his children, starting with very humble beginnings and overcoming every obstacle in the world to be the successful businessman he is. Tim is humble and quiet but incredibly perceptive, managing Kelly’s career for years before becoming an executive at Nickelodeon. Even with all the things they are involved in, their best performance is as fathers.”

The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has been captured on video in a visibly agitated state, directing his anger toward one of the police security personnel during the ongoing #SaveTheJudiciaryDemo.

In the video sighted by GhanaWeb, which is fast going viral, the reason for the MP’s rage remains unclear, and it is unknown what specifically provoked him.

However, the footage shows the lawmaker angrily addressing the officers while standing behind the barricades.

He is then seen knocking the head of the police officer in the video, escalating the confrontation.

In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, Richard Ahigbah, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Director of Communications, is also seen trying to calm the MP down and prevent the incident from worsening.

The officer, on the other hand, was captured in the video remaining non-reactive, with his colleague officers seen attempting to calm him down following the incident.

The demonstration, organised by political parties and led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) under the banner #SaveTheJudiciaryDemo, aims to mount a strong defense of the nation’s constitution and uphold the independence of the judiciary and to protest against the suspension of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo.

‘It’s not my job to put the ball in the back of the net’ – Karim Zito bemoans

0

Abdul Karim Zito is the head coach of Asante Kotoko Abdul Karim Zito is the head coach of Asante Kotoko

Asante Kotoko’s new head coach, Abdul Karim Zito, has voiced his frustration after his side failed to convert numerous chances in their goalless draw against rivals Hearts of Oak in the Ghana Premier League on Sunday, May 4, 2025.

The fiercely contested encounter at the Accra Sports Stadium saw both teams create opportunities but ultimately fall short in the final third. While the game ended in a stalemate, Kotoko looked the more likely to score, especially in the opening half-hour.

After the match, Zito acknowledged the improvements in attacking play but lamented his forwards’ inability to finish.

“Putting the ball into the net is the responsibility of the player. We teach them how to score, but converting those chances is a matter of individual ability. I’ve done countless training sessions on finishing. When I came in, I saw that finishing was the problem. Now we’re creating chances, we just need to put the ball in the net. Maybe by the next game, we’ll see that change,” he explained.

Zito’s comments came on the back of a promising performance from his side, which entered the game with renewed confidence after a 1-0 win over Aduana Stars ended a four-match winless run and led to the departure of Prosper Ogum.

Under Zito, Kotoko looked more organised and purposeful in attack but lacked the clinical edge to take all three points against Hearts of Oak.

Rwanda confirms talks with US about taking in migrants

0

Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungireh says that Rwanda believes in giving migrants Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungireh says that Rwanda believes in giving migrants

Rwanda is in the “early stage” of talks with the Trump administration to accept migrants deported by the US, the East African country’s Foreign Affairs Minister Olivier Nduhungireh has said.

His comments come after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said last month that Washington was “actively searching” for countries that would take in “some of the most despicable human beings”.

Nduhungireh said the talks were “not new to us” as Rwanda had previously agreed to accept migrants deported by the UK.

However, the UK abandoned the scheme, which faced numerous legal changes, after Keir Starmer’s Labour government took office last July.

Speaking to Rwandan TV on Sunday, Nduhungireh said the government was in the “spirit” of giving “another chance to migrants who have problems across the world”.

Nduhungireh added that the talks with the US were continuing, and it was too early to predict their their outcome.

Since coming to office in January, US President Donald Trump has focused on speeding up the removal of undocumented migrants, with the promise of “mass deportations”.

In February, El Salvador offered to take in criminals deported from the US, including those with US citizenship, and house them in its mega-jail.

Salvadorean President Nayib Bukele said his government would do so “in exchange for a fee”.

Featuring secular musicians on gospel songs is just ‘noise’ – Mavis Asante

If collaborating with secular artistes was the only means to win souls to the Kingdom of God, then Gospel act Mavis Asante would fail that mission.

This is because she has strong reservations about such collaborations, insisting they are fundamentally wrong and amount to nothing but “noise.”

Speaking exclusively to on Monday, April 28, Mavis Asante—who recently made a comeback with a single titled —was clear about her stance. She stressed that gospel musicians have a divine calling that should not be mixed with secular pursuits.

“First and foremost, what is the purpose and reason behind such a collaboration? Is it for fame? To win souls? For the hype and recognition or what?” she questioned.

“Honestly, each of us has our calling and purpose, so I believe we’re two different people doing two different things. Just as a lawyer can’t be called to perform surgery, no matter how intelligent or famous he might be—and vice versa—a surgeon cannot defend anyone in court. That is my thought and belief,” she explained.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s music scene has seen collaborations between gospel and secular artistes that have produced some memorable hits over the years.

Songs such as by Herty Borngreat featuring Sarkodie, by Joyce Blessing featuring AB Crentsil, by Yaw Sarpong and the Asomafo featuring Sarkodie, by Lady Prempeh featuring Richie and Asem, and by Nacee and Guru have given music lovers something to jam to. But Mavis insists such partnerships are inappropriate.

She emphasised that the mission of secular artistes does not align with that of gospel musicians, whose primary purpose is to sing about God, salvation, and spiritual matters.

According to her, collaborations between the two only create confusion and dilute the gospel message.

“I believe it does nothing to the gospel message. I’ll term it as ‘noise’ in Mass Communication,” she said.

She further advised gospel artistes seeking to reach a broader audience to collaborate within the gospel fraternity instead of looking outside.

“I think there are so many gospel artistes available for this purpose. I believe that before any collaboration, a gospel artiste must pray, fast and discern very seriously. Sometimes, saying no to certain desires—like the urge to have a secular artiste on your song—honours God more than any big-name collaboration could ever do,” she added.

Flimsy petition, dangerous precedent — Minority Leader slams CJ suspension

0

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged members of Ghana’s judiciary to stand united in defense of their institution, following the controversial suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.

Addressing protesters during the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration in Accra on Monday, Afenyo-Markin warned that the move against the Chief Justice poses a direct threat to judicial independence and the country’s democratic framework.

Church Of Pentecost Goes To 190th Country

Apostle Eric Nyamekye

The Church of Pentecost, which has its headquarters in Ghana, has established its presence in 190 countries across the world with a total membership of 4,827, 074 as at December, 2024.

The Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, who made this known at the 47th General Council Meetings held at the Pentecost Convention Centre, Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region, said the church also recorded 4,129,412 total membership in Ghana, representing 12.5 percent of the Ghanaian population.

He said the church could also boast of 108 educational institutions comprising 104 basic schools, three (3) Senior High Schools, and one (1) vocational training institute.

The Chairman also mentioned that apart from its mandate of reaching out with the word of God, it has also transformed lives with the establishment of 12 health facilities and four (4) hospitals, with continued efforts to improve access to potable water supply in communities across various parts of the country.

Apostle Nyamekye said community development by the church, including the construction of over 239 water facilities, road repairs, drainage systems installations, street lights maintenance among other initiatives have not only supported development but also  improved the livelihoods of many people in deprived communities.

The church also offered prayers for the leadership of the country, as well as God’s intervention for peace to be restored in Bawku.

As part of the meetings, the church also elected some pastors to replace some members of the church’s Executive Council who have served for years and are retiring from active service.

‘You have forgotten Seidu Agongo and his media outlets’ – Mugabe Maase blasts Mahama government

0

Pro–National Democratic Congress (NDC) broadcaster Mugabe Maase has launched a stinging criticism of the Mahama administration, accusing it of sidelining loyal media allies, including those associated with businessman Alhaji Seidu Agongo.

In an impassioned broadcast, Maase expressed frustration that staff from media outlets such as Accra FM and Class FM, owned by Seidu Agongo, have been overlooked for government appointments despite their staunch support for the NDC during its years in opposition.

“You’ve given appointments to over 15 journalists, and Bobie Ansah has been sidelined,” Maase said, referring to the outspoken host of The Citizen Show on Accra FM.

“You’ve forgotten Radio Gold, Accra FM, Ahotor FM, and Class FM,” he added.

Maase, a known NDC sympathizer, painted a picture of betrayal and neglect, alleging that figures who endured difficult conditions to campaign for the party have now been left behind in favor of journalists from mainstream media organizations such as Joy FM, Adom FM, and TV3.

“When you were seeking power, you could call me at 1 a.m. or 2 a.m. to travel to Kumasi, Tamale, and Winneba. In Winneba, we had to sleep in the open and got sick as a result. Now, people are already complaining that you’ve changed your phone numbers,” he recalled.

The broadcaster mentioned several names, including Bobie Ansah, Valentina Ofori-Afriyie, Samuel Wutor, Nancy Obimpeh, and Alaska of Ahotor FM, arguing that they all made sacrifices for the NDC and should not have to “queue” for recognition or appointments.

“I don’t need anything from the government. It isn’t now that I want to build a house or acquire land. I’ve already lived my life. But you people, do the right thing,” he urged.

Seidu Agongo, the businessman at the center of the conversation, is widely regarded as one of the quiet financiers of the NDC. However, neither he nor his media houses have received notable recognition since the party’s recent return to power.

The Mahama administration has not officially responded to the accusations.

By Agbaxode Emmanuel

Akatsi (VR), May 5, GNA – The Women Ministry from Agorve District of the Church of Pentecost within Akatsi South in the Volta Region has organised a free health screening exercise for members of the Church.

The event, held at the Church’s Central Auditorium, also took participants through some skills training such as bridal fun formation, fascinator, and others.

Dr Michael Dovlo, a medical House Officer at Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital and a member of the Church in the District disclosed that participants have gone through the necessary tests required for their well-being.

These, he said, include blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, basic hearing assessment, visual acuity, and others.

Dr Dovlo observed that some participants, especially farmers, were having issues such as general body pains whilst others suffered from hypertension.

The prevalence of hypertension, he said emerged from what he stated ‘non-adherence to anti-hypertension.’

Dr Dovlo also called for lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise and health checks, adherence to health-related directives, and others.

Mrs Angela Kpeli, wife of the District Pastor of the Church and leader of the health team, explained that the exercise remained an important activity for the well-being of members of the church.

She said the exercise would be sustained and open to all, including non-Church members.

Mrs Kpeli, who is also a health worker within the municipality, expressed gratitude to the members of the Women’s Ministry for their support.

She further expressed appreciation to the Management of the Akatsi Municipal Hospital for aiding the Church in providing free medications to participants.

When engaged by the Ghana News Agency, some participants have expressed concerns about the need to adapt to regular health checks for healthy living.

They thanked the leadership of the Church and the Women’s Wing for the love shown them.

The Agorve District of the Church under the leadership of Reverend Prosper Kpeli, has since been embarking on key activities to propagate the gospel to every sphere of society.

Watch moment the Weija-Gbawe MP led protestors in chants

Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, led some protestors in chants and songs during the “Save the Judiciary Demo” held on Monday, May 5, 2025.

The demonstration, organised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a coalition of political parties, including the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), and the People’s National Party (PNP), was in response to the recent suspension of the Chief Justice.

The protesters expressed concerns over what they described as political interference in the judiciary, cautioning that the move threatened the independence of one of Ghana’s key democratic institutions.

The suspension followed the establishment of a prima facie case in three separate petitions calling for the Chief Justice’s removal.

In the interim, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has stepped in as Acting Chief Justice, as stipulated under Article 144(6) of the 1992 Constitution.

The article mandates that the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court shall act in such a capacity whenever the substantive Chief Justice is unable to perform their duties.

Meanwhile the coalition of parties, led by the NPP has submitted a petition to Parliament, urging the House to intervene and persuade the president to reverse the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, describing the action as a threat to judicial independence.

Govt’s indebtedness to GNPC balloons to $1.25 billion

0

Government indebtedness to the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has increased to $1.25 billion as of December 2024.

This is according to the latest report from the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC), which has raised fresh concerns over the sustainability of the state-owned oil firm.

PIAC, in its 2021 annual report, revealed that GNPC was unable to recover $126.68 million in budgeted revenue from loans and guarantees – part of a cumulative $318.09 million owed by the government and its agencies since 2011.

PIAC had then urged GNPC to intensify efforts to recover these outstanding amounts in order to safeguard the implementation of its work programme.

It also advised the Corporation to discontinue the issuance of new loans and guarantees until significant repayments were made.

Despite this, PIAC’s latest report shows that government indebtedness to GNPC has surged to $1.25 billion as of the end of December 2024.

It is driven by additional disbursements and guarantees made by the Corporation.

The Committee has expressed strong disapproval of the government’s continued reliance on GNPC for financing, and has once again called for urgent repayment of outstanding debts to preserve the Corporation’s financial viability.

Israel security cabinet approves plan to ‘capture’ Gaza, official says

0

Israel’s security cabinet has approved a plan to expand its military offensive against Hamas which includes the “capture” of Gaza and the holding of its territory, according to an Israeli official.

It is also said to include moving the 2.1 million Palestinians in Gaza towards the south, which could worsen the humanitarian crisis.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it a “good plan” because it would achieve the goals of defeating Hamas and returning its remaining hostages, the official said.

The cabinet also approved, in principle, a plan to deliver and distribute humanitarian aid through private companies, which would end a two-month blockade the UN says has caused severe food shortages.

The UN and other aid agencies have said the proposal would be a breach of basic humanitarian principles and that they will not co-operate.

Hamas said Israel’s proposal amounted to “political blackmail”.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet met on Sunday evening to discuss the Gaza offensive, which resumed when Israel ended a two-month ceasefire on 18 March.

An Israeli official who briefed the media on Monday said that ministers voted unanimously to approve a plan proposed by the Israeli military’s Chief of Staff Lt Gen Eyal Zamir to “defeat Hamas in Gaza and return the hostages”.

“The plan will include, among other things, the capture of the Strip and holding the territories, moving the Gazan population south for its defence, denying Hamas the ability to distribute humanitarian supplies, and powerful attacks against Hamas,” the official said.

Israeli media reported that the plan would take months and that the first stage included the seizure of additional areas of Gaza and the expansion of the Israeli-designated “buffer zone” running along the territory’s borders. It would aim to give Israel additional leverage in negotiations with Hamas on a new ceasefire and hostage release deal.

Security cabinet member Zeev Elkin told public broadcaster Kan that there was “still a window of opportunity” for a new hostage release before the end of President Trump’s 13-16 May trip to the Middle East “if Hamas understands we are serious”.

During a visit to a naval base on Sunday, Lt Gen Zamir told special forces that tens of thousands of reservists were being called up “in order to strengthen and expand our operations in Gaza”.

“We are increasing the pressure with the aim of bringing our people home and defeating Hamas. We will operate in additional areas and destroy all terrorist infrastructure – above and below ground,” he said.

However, critics say this is a failed strategy, as none of the 59 remaining hostages have been freed since the offensive resumed six weeks ago.

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum, which represents hostages’ relatives, said the plan was an admission by the government that it was “choosing territories over the hostages” and that this was “against the will of over 70% of the people” in Israel.

The Israeli official said the security cabinet also approved by a large majority “the possibility of humanitarian distribution – if necessary – that would prevent Hamas from taking control of supplies and would destroy its governmental capabilities”.

On Sunday, the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT), a forum that includes UN agencies, said Israeli officials were seeking to “shut down the existing aid distribution system” and “have us agree to deliver supplies through Israeli hubs under conditions set by the Israeli military, once the government agrees to re-open crossings”.

The HCT warned that the plan would mean large parts of Gaza, including less mobile and most vulnerable people, would continue to go without supplies.

“It contravenes fundamental humanitarian principles and appears designed to reinforce control over life-sustaining items as a pressure tactic – as part of a military strategy,” it said.

“It is dangerous, driving civilians into militarized zones to collect rations, threatening lives, including those of humanitarian workers, while further entrenching forced displacement.”

Israel cut off all deliveries of humanitarian aid and other supplies to Gaza aid on 2 March, two weeks before resuming its offensive.

According to the UN, the population is facing a renewed risk of hunger and malnutrition because warehouses are empty, bakeries have shut down, and community kitchens are days away from running out of supplies.

The blockade has also cut off essential medicines, vaccines and medical equipment needed by Gaza’s overwhelmed healthcare system.

The UN says Israel is obliged under international law to ensure supplies for Gaza’s population, almost all of whom have been displaced. Israel says it is complying with international law, and there is no shortage of aid.

The Israeli military launched a campaign to destroy Hamas in response to an unprecedented cross-border attack on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.

At least 52,567 people have been killed in Gaza since then, including 2,459 since the Israeli offensive resumed, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry.

Global oil prices slide amid US-China trade war

0

Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD) Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD)

The Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD), in its latest Market Outlook for the May 1–15, 2025 pricing window, highlights key global and local market developments expected to influence fuel prices in Ghana.

Despite a modest 1.38% rise in global oil prices during the first quarter of 2025, recent weeks have seen a significant reversal, with Brent crude dropping from a high of $83 per barrel in February to approximately $67 in April.

CBOD attributes this downturn to growing global uncertainty, primarily fueled by the intensifying tariff war between the United States and China.

“The continued uncertainty surrounding US-China trade negotiations is weighing heavily on global economic confidence and suppressing demand growth for crude oil,” the report stated.

Geopolitics and sanctions add to global pressure

The market decline also coincides with renewed sanctions imposed by the Trump Administration. In February, the U.S. introduced fresh restrictions targeting Iran’s nuclear program and extended sanctions to Russian entities involved in transporting Iranian oil to China.

These measures are expected to restrict refinery activity and reduce petroleum exports from China, the world’s largest crude importer, further tightening global trade flows.

Rising supply meets muted demand

Adding to the price slump, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects a steady rise in U.S. oil production, with output expected to average 13.59 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2025 and 13.73 million b/d in 2026.

In a departure from earlier plans, OPEC+ has announced that it will increase production starting in May instead of July.

This combination of increased supply and weakened demand has triggered broad declines in petroleum product prices. CBOD reports that, globally, crude oil prices dropped by 4.55%, petrol by 1.87%, diesel by 2.54%, and LPG by 5.55%.

Cedi strengthens, FX conditions improve

On the domestic front, CBOD reports that the FuFeX30, the benchmark rate used for pricing petroleum products sold on credit, has been set at GHS14.5000/USD for the current pricing window.

For cash sales, the spot FX rate stands slightly higher at GH¢14.7000/USD, based on commercial bank quotations.

The Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) biweekly FX auction allocated US$20 million to Bulk Import, Distribution, and Export Companies (BIDECs), covering only 22% of total bids submitted.

Nonetheless, the cedi appreciated significantly in this window, with the auction rate improving from GH¢15.5573 to GH¢14.2877 per USD, an 8.16% gain.

CBOD expects that successful implementation of the government’s 2025 Budget fiscal policy measures will reinforce cedi stability and help cushion domestic pump prices against external shocks.

Ex-Refinery Price Indicator framework

CBOD also explained that the Ex-Refinery Price Indicator (XPI), which determines pricing for petroleum products in Ghana, is based on international oil prices, a breakeven premium set by the Chamber, and applicable exchange rates.

The FuFeX30 is applied to credit-based transactions, while cash sales rely on the spot rate.

With global supply and demand dynamics continuing to shift rapidly, CBOD cautions that local fuel prices may remain volatile unless geopolitical tensions and market imbalances ease.

You have no knowledge about football – Coach Opeele tells Serwaa Amihere over GPL criticism

0

Serwaa Amihere and Coach Opeele Serwaa Amihere and Coach Opeele

Ghanaian coach Isaac Opeele Boateng has criticised media personality Serwaa Amihere for raising concerns about the marketing and promotion of the Ghana Premier League (GPL).

Amihere, in a tweet on X, chastised the Ghana Football Association (GFA) under the leadership of Kurt Okraku for not putting in much effort to promote the GPL, leading to the low attendance at the recent Kotoko-Hearts of Oak game at the Accra Sports Stadium.

She implored the GFA to fix security at stadiums, invest in marketing the game to attract fans, incentivize and remunerate match officials properly, and get improved playing pitches.

However, her remarks were met with backlash from Coach Opeele, who described the comments as “shallow” which tends to be misleading.

The former Asante Kotoko coach advised Amihere to be measured in her criticisms because she has no knowledge about football as a media personality, urging her to focus on her job.

He suggested that the problems regarding football involve a great number of factors, hence the GFA cannot be solely blamed for the setbacks.

“Serwaa Amihere, come again! Your shallow look at Ghana football is weirdly insipid. Very funny, like a sports journalist talking about politics on X and being asked to concentrate on sports. She has no knowledge about football. The deep-seated woes of our Ghana football are myriad,” he wrote on X.

The Kotoko-Hearts of Oak game ended goalless, with both teams missing chances that could have excited the game.

The poor attendance at the stadium has raised concerns about marketing and the declining nature of the Premier League, which has raised concerns among stakeholders.

There’s hypocrisy on the other side – Arthur Kennedy on nomination of 7 Supreme Court judges

0

The move has drawn widespread criticism, with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) describing it as a veiled attempt to pursue a third-term agenda.

In an interview on , Dr. Kennedy stressed his disagreement with Mahama’s decision, describing it as hypocritical.

“This is why people do not take politicians seriously. Mahama criticised Akufo-Addo for packing the court—and it was true—but a lot of NPP members defended the decision.

“So people will rightly ask: why is Mahama repeating something he criticised? And why is the NPP now opposing it? When the NPP does it, it’s not right; when the NDC does it, it’s the same. There are hypocrites on both sides,” he stated.

Dr. Kennedy also questioned the rationale behind maintaining almost 22 Supreme Court judges in a country of over 30 million people facing an economic crisis.

“We’ll have to pay them salaries, they’ll go on vacation, and they’ll have other expenses. It simply doesn’t match our resources,” he added.

SHS food quality has improved

0

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has expressed surprise and disappointment over recent remarks by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, regarding the quality of food served in senior high schools.

The Minister had raised concerns about what he described as the “poor quality of food” being served to students and hinted that the government may consider reversing its decision to allow school heads to directly procure food, one of the key promises in the NDC’s education policy.

The policy, outlined in the party’s manifesto, grants school heads and bursars the authority to purchase food locally as part of efforts to improve quality and efficiency in the school feeding programme.

Reacting to the Minister’s statement, National Secretary of CHASS, Primus Baro, said the comments were unexpected and had not been raised in any engagements with the Ministry or the Ghana Education Service.

“We have not received any formal reports suggesting that schools are serving poor-quality food. The feedback we’ve received rather indicates improvement since headteachers began procuring food themselves,” he told Citi News on Monday, May 5, 2025.

Baro clarified that while CHASS is not necessarily insisting on maintaining control over food procurement, the current arrangement was recommended due to persistent challenges under the previous centralized model, including delays and substandard supplies.

“We’re open to whatever decision government takes but expect that, if centralised procurement returns, food is delivered on time and in the right quantities.”

He also urged that concerns about food quality be handled internally and constructively, rather than in the media, to avoid creating a misleading impression based on isolated incidents.

On the issue of funding, Baro acknowledged some delays in recent disbursements due to administrative changes but confirmed that funds had since been released, although some arrears remain unpaid.

Ada East District Assembly elects Presiding Member after six attempts

0

By Opesika Tetteh Puplampu

Atortorkorpe-Ada, May 05, GNA – The Ada East District Assembly in the Greater Accra Region has elected Mr. Philip Tetteh Atchia as its new Presiding Member after six attempts.

Mr. Atchia, the Assembly Member for the Asigbekorpe Electoral Area, was the elected Presiding Member (PM) of the Ninth Assembly after five failed attempts.

He secured an overwhelming endorsement with 38 yes votes out of 39 valid, representing 97.44 per cent, while one “no” vote was recorded.

His election followed the decision of Mr. Ebenezer Nartey, Assembly Member for Ada-Foah Zongo, to step down from the race, allowing him to go unopposed.

The position had remained vacant for months due to intense disagreements, political interference, and disputes over who qualified to occupy the seat. The impasse had stalled the smooth running of assembly business and delayed developmental discussions in the district.

The election comes after two failed rounds of voting on April 30, where contenders Mr. Mark Nii Adjei Sowah and Mr. Ebenezer Tetteh Kpodo were unable to secure the legally required two-thirds majority.

In the first round, Mr Sowah polled 12 votes while Mr. Kpodo garnered 24, with 3 ballots rejected. In the second round, Mr Sowah increased his tally to 14 while Mr Kpodo maintained 24 votes. One ballot was rejected.

The process was further disrupted when a government appointee was caught taking a photo of his ballot, an act that contravenes electoral rules. The situation escalated, verbally attacking the electoral officer and journalists and prompting widespread outrage among assembly members.

The incident compelled authorities to cancel the process and call for fresh nominations, paving the way for Mr. Atchia to contest and win, bringing relief and renewed hope for effective local governance and development within the Ada East District as the district awaits the confirmation of its District Chief Executive nominee.

A former Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Catherine Afeku, has condemned the suspension of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.

Addressing the gathering at the Save the Judiciary Demo on Monday, May 5, 2025, she stated that such actions erode public trust in democratic institutions in the country.

“The judiciary should operate independently to ensure that one receives a fair hearing when your case is presented in court. It is essential for the judiciary to maintain strong independence. We need the judiciary to be fiercely independent.

“Women of Ghana, rise up and pray for Chief Justice Torkornoo, as what impacts one woman impacts us all,” she remarked.

The NPP and a coalition of political parties, including the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP) staged a protest on Monday, May 5, 2025, in response to the suspension of the Chief Justice, following the determination of a prima facie case in the three petitions asking for the removal from office.

Protestors have described the suspension of the Chief Justice as an interference in the judiciary, warning that it undermines the independence of the judiciary.

Ghanaian Businesses Urged to Embrace Management Systems Certification

0

Accra, May 5, GNA – Ghanaian businesses have been encouraged to undergo management systems certification to enable them to access the competitive international market.

Mrs Dzienyo Akafia, Head Systems Certification of the Ghana Standards Authority, who made the call at the third AGM, said consumers all over the world were looking out for organisations with management systems, which provide assurance of consistently safe and quality products and services.

She said systems certification allowed businesses to document their processes and procedures, develop data, and do reviews and traceability with time, identify where issues may arise and be able to fix them in the nick of time before new problems develop.

“Typically, as Ghanaians, we do not like to document what we do because we like to flow freely, but we need a situation where we are able to put down information, ” she said.

A standard will typically also expect the organisations to do

internal audits that is basically checking the system, and it has to be done periodically.

“You want to know if you are going forward or you are going backwards, or at least you are where you started from. And the only way to do that is to be checking, to be looking at the records you have put in place, to be able to see that last month, this is what happened. This month, I have improved, or I am declining,” she said.

“If you don’t document, you are unable to clearly identify where these problems are. And the only way an internal audit, for instance, will be effective is when you have documentation to be able to take you back several years,” Mrs Akafia added.

Touching on the benefits, Mrs Akafia said it would boost the confidence of clients that the organisations were situated in the world, they could deliver quality as per their needs.

“We have certain very big companies in Ghana that we have certified. And because of that, they don’t sell only on the local market. They are able to sell within the sub-region and

export to the UK, and the US,” she said, adding that companies with similar products were unable to export to these markets because of the lack of management systems certification.

Professor Alex Dodoo, Director-General of Ghana Standards Authority, said the organisation was ready to support

businesses to thrive.

He said having a standard way of doing things enhanced industrial efficiency, moved businesses forward and gave them recognition, adding that most companies in Ghana did not like documentation.

The Ghana Standards Authority has been implementing the Management Systems Certification Scheme, which has been accredited by DAkkS, a German accreditation body, for several years in the areas of quality, food safety and environmental management systems.

Afrobeats is not dying, it’s evolving – Vice President of FOCAP explains

Vice President of the Foundation of Concerned Arts Professionals (FOCAP), Mel Kwesi Davis Vice President of the Foundation of Concerned Arts Professionals (FOCAP), Mel Kwesi Davis

Vice President of the Foundation of Concerned Arts Professionals (FOCAP), Mel Kwesi Davis, has refuted claims that Afrobeats is losing steam.

He has insisted that the genre is not declining but rather undergoing a critical phase of industrial transformation.

Speaking in an interview on AsaasePa, Mel Kwesi Davis emphasised that Afrobeats remains a dominant global sound but is currently at a crossroads that demands the active involvement of its original creators.

He urged industry stakeholders to adapt to the ongoing changes or risk being left behind.

“Industrially, Afrobeats is going through a certain transition, and we should make ourselves relevant to that transition. It hasn’t been around for that long, yet it’s made such a global impact,” he said.

Mel Kwesi Davis also talked about how major music streaming platforms such as Apple Music, Spotify, and Boomplay have influenced the trajectory of Afrobeats, shaping how it is curated, consumed, and promoted globally.

According to him, these platforms have played a major role in pushing Afrobeats to the top of global charts, but without the involvement of the genre’s originators.

“Because they created the algorithm, they decide what kind of music rises. For four years, Afrobeats was dominating, while genres like reggae and hip-hop were in the background. They saw Afrobeats as a profitable product,” he explained.

He also pointed out that high-profile collaborations such as Ed Sheeran with Fuse ODG, Chris Brown with Davido, and Jason Derulo with other Afrobeats artistes have helped the genre cross over into international markets.

But despite these milestones, he expressed concern that African creatives are being excluded from key decision-making processes that affect the genre’s future.

“The commercialisation is happening, but we, the people producing the music, are not part of the boardroom conversations. If we don’t show up in this transition, we’ll be sidelined in an industry we built,” he added.

A Plus is the biggest loose talker of the week

0

When an individual is elected by the electorate to represent their interests at the highest level of government — Parliament — they are expected to conduct themselves with decorum and exercise restraint in their speech, particularly in the public domain.

This expectation stems from the fact that as parliamentarians and lawmakers, they are regarded as honorable individuals entrusted with the responsibility and dignity of serving in such esteemed positions of national leadership, on behalf of the people.

However, in the course of their duties, heightened emotions can sometimes cloud judgment, leading some lawmakers to act in ways that contradict the standards and integrity expected of their office — resorting, in the heat of the moment, to languages and behaviors that fall short of the dignity associated with their esteemed positions, becoming what GhanaWeb terms as ‘loose talkers’.

Such is the case of the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, who, over the past week, has found himself at the center of widespread media attention and public discourses.

The first-time lawmaker has come under intense scrutiny from various sectors of the country for his remarks and perceived lack of decorum, particularly in his public comments directed at the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine.

What happened

Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, reportedly accused the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, of bribery and corruption.

According to what was deemed as a post from A Plus, the minister allegedly sought an amount of GH¢500,000 to bribe the Appointments Committee of Parliament.

The accusation followed a rebuttal by Dr Ayine during a press conference on April 30, 2025, where he denied the initial allegations made by A Plus concerning corruption-related matters.

A Plus stated, “No! That is not true. My information is that you went to beg for 500 thousand cedis, claiming you were going to use it to bribe the Appointment Committee of Parliament. And for your information, you’re not the only one. If you are an old (sic), I’ll reset your brain (sic), man!”

U-turn and retraction

Following intense backlash, A Plus has since issued an unqualified apology to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, over the derogatory remarks that were made against him.

Clarifying his position on the matter, A Plus, as he is popularly known, acknowledged that the language he used in response to the Attorney General’s comments, which were made at a press conference, were inappropriate and did not reflect the decorum expected of someone in his position as a Member of Parliament.

“Regarding my own response on Facebook to the Attorney General’s comments at the press conference, I admit that I authored that particular post. Upon reflection, I acknowledge that the tone and choice of words I used were inappropriate.

“As a Member of Parliament, a younger colleague, and a junior in the House, I sincerely apologise to Hon Dr Ayine, the general public, the NDC party, and Parliament, and fully retract those words. I believe I could have made my point in a more respectful and constructive manner,” he said on Facebook on May 3, 2025.

A Plus also expressed deep remorse over the incident, adding that he has since deleted the post containing the insulting remarks directed at the Attorney General as a gesture of accountability and to demonstrate that he has taken full responsibility for his actions.

“I take full responsibility for my words and actions. As a gesture of remorse and respect, I have deleted the post in question — something I rarely do,” he stated.

Impersonation

Another ‘loose talk’ A Plus made was his claim that a recent post attributing allegations of corruption involving the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, did not originate from him, but was instead the work of an impersonator.

According to him, the post in question originated from an X (formerly Twitter) account that falsely used his personal details and displayed a verification badge, thereby misleading the public into believing it was his official account.

He emphasised that he did not author the statement and has never made any such accusations against the Attorney General, describing the situation as a misunderstanding between him and the Attorney General.

“I wish to formally address the recent misunderstanding between myself and my respected senior colleague, Hon Dr Dominic Ayine. To begin with, it is important to clarify that this matter revolves around two separate social media posts: A Twitter (X) post from a fake account impersonating me, which claimed that the Hon Attorney General is a thief and corrupt. My subsequent response on Facebook, after the Attorney General appeared to rely on the content of that fake account during his press conference to address related questions,” parts of his statement posted on his official Facebook account on Saturday, May 3, 2025, read.

The lawmaker further clarified that he has never made any such serious allegations of corruption against Dr Ayine, stressing that the claims attributed to him are entirely false and were instead made by an impersonator.

“First and foremost, I want to state, without any ambiguity, that I have never — at any point — accused the Hon Attorney General, Dr Ayine, of being corrupt or a thief. That claim is false and misleading. The statements currently in circulation originated from a fraudulent Twitter (X) account that is impersonating me. Although the account bears my name, photograph, and even a verification badge, it is not under my control. As the public is now aware, verification on X can be obtained through a paid subscription, making impersonation easier,” his statement continued.

Affectionately known as A Plus, the lawmaker added that his original remarks — referencing a sanitation levy and seemingly distorted by the impersonator — are still available on his official Facebook account, where he personally authored them.

He has, therefore, urged the general public to disregard the impersonator account and the false statements being attributed to him.

Taking bribe

One would have expected that, following what he described as a period of sober reflection, the lawmaker would adopt a more measured tone and refocus his energy on serving his constituents.

However, that appears not to be the case, as he has once again stirred controversies with another provocative statement.

A Plus, in a live TV interview, openly admitted that he had received a substantial sum of money from Joseph Siaw, owner of the Jospong Group of Companies, to halt a campaign against the interests of one of his companies.

According to A Plus, Siaw compensated him financially to end his campaign for the decentralisation of waste management in Ghana, which would impact the operations of Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

He added that his decision to launch the campaign was in retaliation to Paul Adom-Otchere, Host of Good Evening Ghana, who had defamed him on Metro TV, a media station also owned by Siaw.

“So, this man takes my photo, puts it on TV, saying, ‘A Plus, you have gone to take GH₵250,000…’ He said a lot, and this money he is talking about—you say you are NPP, and the money is being given to parliamentarians, so why are you not talking about the NPP parliamentarians? Okay, so A Plus will not say anything. I have grown, but I am a very bad guy. When he did that, I didn’t respond; I just left him. Then on Monday, I started ‘Waste Management Must Be Decentralised’ because Zoomlion owns Metro TV. So, if you use Metro TV to do that, Paul, you don’t have anything of value that I will attack apart from your wife.

“I started ‘Waste Management Must Be Decentralised’ because I wanted to attack his boss, Zoomlion, and I spent time on it. You see where all the Youth Employment issues are heading? Yes, I will have time. I will deal with you. His boss called me; Zoomlion called me so many times, but I wasn’t picking up his calls. Everyone in this country was calling me, saying Zoomlion wants to talk to you, but I wasn’t picking up. Paul, ask your boss what happened when he met me. I won’t sue you for defamation. Have you noticed I stopped the waste management campaign? Because his boss paid me for his misbehavior on Metro TV,” he added.

According to A Plus, Joseph Siaw, who is also an Elder of the Church of Pentecost, paid him “good money to stop writing about him on social media.”

He further warned Paul Adom-Otchere to stop defaming him, adding; “I have taken the damages from his boss, and Paul, if you watch this show and decide to start again, I will tell you about two of your friends. The amount they will pay, you will be so disappointed in your life.”

His actions have been widely condemned by concerned Ghanaians as unbecoming of a lawmaker, with many arguing that such conduct undermines both his personal integrity and the dignity of the office he holds.

FLASHBACK: I sold my family’s TV, freezer to raise capital for Bills Micro-credit

Founder of Bills, Richard Nii-Armah Quaye Founder of Bills, Richard Nii-Armah Quaye

Founder of Bills, Richard Nii-Armah Quaye, in May 2024, recounted how he sold various items, including a television and freezer that belonged to his family, to establish Bills Micro-Credit.

In a documentary, he said; “To be honest, when I came from the UK, I didn’t come with much money… If I recall, I had to sell family properties like plasma TV, home theater, freezers to be able to generate a little money that will enable me to disburse or lend money to [customers].”

Read the full story originally published on May 14, 2024.

Founder and Board Chairman of Bills, formerly Quick Credit, Richard Nii-Armah Quaye, has disclosed the humble beginnings of his now vibrant microfinance company.

Unlike many lending institutions that were birthed from partnerships and huge investments, Bills Micro-credit had its initial capital from the sale of the founder’s family properties.

The astute businessman from a poor home, says he had to sell off the family’s television set, home theater system and freezer to raise funds to kickstart his business upon his return from school abroad.

“To be honest, when I came from the UK, I didn’t come with much money… If I recall, I had to sell family properties like plasma TV, home theater, freezers to be able to generate a little money that will enable me to disburse or lend money to [customers],” he said in the newly released Quick Impact documentary.

Narrating events leading to the decision to start the business, Richard Nii-Armah Quaye revealed he discovered a niche as a result of prevailing circumstances in his community, Korle Gonno.

According to him, people in the community assumed he had returned from the UK with so much money though he only went abroad to further his studies.

The assumption led to constant requests from folks in the neighbourhood for varying degrees of financial assistance.

“There is this culture in Korle Gonno where I come from, where people perceive anyone who had come from the UK, Europe, or US that you have made money. So when I came back home people in the community would normally be looking for me, bringing their problems, and asking me to assist financially,” he stated.

“I learnt in the business school that…where there are problems, comes opportunities. And so that gave me the idea to set up Quick Credit so that I could then officially position myself to lend monies to those who want money,” the founder disclosed.

Quick Credit rebranded to Bills in 2024 after 15 years of remarkable service in the micro-finance sector with an annual customer base of over 350,000.

Watch the moment Hearts legend Don Bortey was denied entry before Kotoko clash

Security personnel stopped Don Bortey from entering the pitch PC GHOne TV Security personnel stopped Don Bortey from entering the pitch PC GHOne TV

There was drama both on and off the pitch on Sunday, May 4, 2025, as Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko played out a goalless draw at the Accra Sports Stadium.

But before a ball was even kicked, chaos erupted at the entrance to the inner perimeter when Hearts legend Don Bortey was denied entry.

The former winger, once adored for his exploits in the famous Phobian shirt, arrived at the venue with a small entourage but was surprisingly stopped by security personnel, who insisted he lacked the necessary accreditation.

Tensions flared as Bortey’s associates argued with officials, demanding he be allowed into the pitch area.

The commotion attracted dozens of onlookers, briefly disrupting the pre-match atmosphere.

Eventually, order was restored, but the incident cast a shadow over the fixture’s build-up. On the field, Hearts of Oak and Kotoko delivered a tense and fiercely contested clash that ultimately failed to produce a goal but was rich in drama and intensity.

Kotoko started on the front foot, quickly asserting dominance and creating early chances. However, Benjamin Asare, in the Hearts goal, played a key role in keeping his side in the game, producing several crucial saves in the first half.

Hearts grew into the contest around the half-hour mark. A miscommunication in the Kotoko backline nearly gifted them an opener in the 33rd minute, and from the resulting corner, a header was dramatically cleared off the line.

The second half saw more end-to-end action. Hearts started stronger, with Stephen Appiah Asare forcing a sharp save from Mohammed Camara in the 47th minute.

Kotoko responded through substitute Saaka Dauda, whose low-driven effort narrowly missed the far post.Despite increasing pressure from Hearts, particularly through the lively Albert Amoah, neither side could find the killer touch.

The result leaves Asante Kotoko in fourth place with 51 points and Hearts of Oak in sixth with 46 points, with the Phobians’ faint hopes of a league title all but dashed.

Opposition parties protest ova suspension of Ghana Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

0

Main opposition party for Ghana – di new patriotic party (NPP) wit oda small parties don hit street to demonstrate ova di suspension of di kontris chief justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Wit dia red and black shirts, bands, placards and oda tins, di protestors begin to dey march from di Supreme Court premises wia dem go waka pass di Parliament House bifor dem go end for di seat of goment.

Dem go president one petition to di goment say make dem stop di process to remove di kontris chief justice.

Dis mata don cause tok tok for social media as everybody don chook mouth for inside.

On top some of dia placards na messages like; “SaveTheJuiciary”, “JudiciaryUnderAttack”, “DemocracyUnderAttack”, “Resist “Resist Mahama im third term agenda”, “Chief justice suspension na dangerous precedent”, “SaveChiefJusticeFromJm” and odas

Dis na di first time president don dey suspend chief justice for di kontri; even tho di law don allow make di president do so, if dem begin “removal process” and di council of state establish “prima facie” case against di chief justice.

Also for kontris history, na only one time wia dem remove one chief justice, dis na in 1963 when dem President Kwame Nkrumah bin sack CJ Sir Arku Korsah.

Dis na afta di court find three pipo not guilty in one bomb attack on di president for Kulungugu.

Nkrumah neva happy about di verdict, wia im sack di CJ Arku Korsah unconstitutionally.

Since dat time, no president for Ghana don sack CJ, na so di kontri also create law wey go guide di process to remove CJ and oda Supreme Court judges and oda ogbonge pipo for state agencies like di electoral commission, di commission on human rights and administrative justice (CHRAJ) and odas.

Di NPP tok say wetin di president do, wey be to suspend di CJ, as one committee bin dey investigate about five different petitions against her, na “attack on di judiciary.”

President Mahama bin set up di committee afta di council of state find say di chief justice get questions to answer afta dem chook eye for di petitions wey pipo file against her.

According to di kontri law, wen pesin file petition say make dem sack di chief justice, di president gatz refer di petition to di council of state.

Na so di council go look di petition and determine if di tins di pipo tok for dia petition na strong case, wia di CJ gat to answer.

Afta dia, di council go advise di president say make im throway di petition (if nothing beta dey inside), wia dem go advise am to form committee to chook mouth for di mata well well (if dem find say di tins wey dey inside di petition na serious wahala).

Na so di committee go begin dia investigation wia dem go invite di chief justice make she defend herself for dia behind closed doors.

So far, dis na wetin don happun as President Mahama follow di advice by di council of state to set di committee, wia im suspend di CJ sake of she no fit to dey under investigation wia she go kontinu to dey office.

Di law (article 146) dey give all di process to remove chief justice on “di grounds say im be incompetent or im misbehave”.

Even tho di law neva tok say make di chief justice respond to di petition for di first stage until dem reach di place wia dem set committee to chook eye for di mata, di CJ bin write to President Mahama afta im refer di petitions to di council of state, say she wan respond to dem.

Inside one letter Gertrude Torkornoo bin write to di president wey bin leak on top social media – she tok say she wan see di petitions and respond to di allegations bifor di council of state to chook eye for di mata.

For di letter on 27 March, di chief justice tok say “I bin dey humbly ask di president and di council of state make dem forward di petitions to me and give me at least 7 days to respond.”

“Dis response go dey part of di material wia una go use to do your consultation bifor una go set up committee of inquiry for dis mata,” she tok.

As di CJ bin dey request di three petitions, na so two oda pipo file more petitions against her.

President Mahama give CJ 10 days to respond

As di mata dey happun, two opposition members of parliament don run to di Supreme Court say make di court stop di president from di process to remove di chief justice wia di kontris law don provide for.

Even bifor di court to hear di injunction application for dis mata, di president bin respond to di CJ.

Inside one letter to justice Gertrude Torkornoo, di president thru im secretary Dr Callistus Mahama tok say im dey “disappointed say di CJ letter bin dey di public and oda places bifor e reach di office of di president.”

“Sake of dis, we don attach dis letter as restricted.”

Oga Callistus explain say “di president dey assure you say im go follow due process for dis matter wey im go give you di chance to respond.”

Di five-member team wey go investigate di CJ

.Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, Justice of di Supreme Court – chairman

.Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu- Justice of di Supreme Court – member

.Daniel Yao Domelevo (former auditor general) – member

.Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo (Ghana armed forces) – member

.Professor James Sefah Dzisah (associate professor, University of Ghana) – member

Na so di opposition NPP since di process begin start to dey complain wia dem dey tok say wetin di president dey do for dis CJ removal mata, na illegal.

Many lawyers for di NPP don dey defend di CJ wia dem tok say if di president remove di CJ thru dis process “e go undermine di judiciary.”

Sabi pipo tok say CJ for resign by now.

Some pipo tok say make she resign by herself as dis controversy dey kontinu.

Na so one former director for di Ghana school of law, oga Kwaku Ansa-Asare tok say per di law, di president get to suspend di chief Justice afta di committee find ‘prima facie’ case against her.

“Di moment di president set up di committee, e mean say im get to suspend di chief Justice wey I tink say na fair tin.”

Former Ghana attorney general react

Di former attorney general (under Nana Akuffo-Addo goment) wey carry one case go court to challenge di process of di removal of di chief Justice, tok say wetin di president do na “assault on di kontris judiciary.”

Oga Godfred Dame tok di BBC say di president “dey in contempt of court as im go ahead to suspend di CJ despite say dem get injunction case for di Supreme Court.”

“Dis kind tin neva happun bifor, na complete charade. Dis dey show di complete disregard for di rule of law by di John Mahama administration.”

Godfred Dame add say “dis na effort of di goment to take control of di judiciary.”

Why opposition NPP, odas dey protest di suspension of di CJ

Apart from di main opposition party di NPP, oda parties like di Liberal party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP) all bin join dis protest.

Di minority caucus (NPP MPs) also bin join di demonstration wia dem tok say na to #SaveTheJudiciary.

According to di opposition NPP, one of di reasons why dem dey try to remove di chief justice, “na for di president to re-interpret di constitution (article 66) to pave way for a third term bid by President Mahama,” di minority chief whip, Frank Annoh Domoreh don tok.

Di NPP dey accuse di president and goment of “abuse of power and illegal process” of removing di CJ.

Even tho dem neva quote wey law or provision of di constitution wia di president don breach so far for di CJ removal process, di opposition NPP say di president gat to “reinstate di chief justice.”

One of di tins dem dey demand for dis demonstration na for di president to “revoke di suspend of di CJ immediately sake of im dey unconstitutional.”

“We no go allow make dem scatter di independence of di judiciary for Ghana. Dis demonstration na to protect our constitution, to ensure say di judiciary na our last bastion of democracy,” national organizer of di NPP Henry Nana Boakye don tok.

President Mahama nominate 7 judges for di Supreme Court

Even as di kasala ova di chief justice don dey kontinu, president Mahama don nominate seven judges for di Supreme Court.

On 25 April, di office of di president announce di names of di justices of di appeals court wia im nominate.

Di statement wia secretary to di president Dr Callistus Mahama don sign tok say “pursuant to article 144 (2) of di constitution, di president don nominate di following justices of di court of appeal to be considered for appointment to di Supreme Court.”

.Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei

.Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh

.Justice Senyo Dzamefe

.Justice Kweku Taiwiah Ackaah-Boafo

.Justice Philip Bright Mensah

.Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo

.Justice Hafisata Amaleboba

At dis moment, di kontri Supreme Court get 14 justices, wia include di suspended chief justice.

Out of di 14, na only one wia John Mahama bin appoint during im first term of office in 2015; wia di oda one di current acting CJ, wia bin dey appointed by ex-president John Agyekum Kufour for 2008.

Apart from dis two, all di oda 12 justices for di Supreme Court, na president Nana Akufo-Addo bin appoint dem.

Sabi pipo say wit di new list of 7 nominations to di Supreme Court by President Mahama, na good tin.

But di opposition NPP say di new appointment to di Supreme Court na agenda by John mahama to “implement im third term agenda”.

Minority leader for parliament and NPP lawmaker Alexander Afenyo-Markin to for one press conference say “dis appointment neva be normal appointment, na strategy to pack di Supreme Court wit pipo wia dey loyal to di goment party.”

“To nominate dis 7 appeals court judges immediately afta di president bin suspend di chief justice, na dangerous political ambition, third-term agenda be dat”.

Chief Justice bin dey face at least 5 petitions against her for her conduct since di ex-president Nana Akufo-Addo bin appoint her as CJ in 2023

Israel DMW drops unfiltered hygiene PSA Nigerians didn?t know they needed

Israel DMW has something to say — and he’s not mincing words.

In a now-viral set of Instagram stories, the logistics manager and hype man best known for working closely with Davido, took time out to deliver a blunt hygiene sermon to his fellow Nigerians.

“Wash your mouth properly first tin after waking up from bed to avoid mouth odour. Very embarrassing,” he wrote.

He didn’t stop there. In another slide, he added:
“Always make sure your armpits are clean.”

While the messages may have sparked laughter online, many agree that Israel is simply saying what some won’t — personal hygiene matters, and it starts with the basics.

World Press Freedom Day: IT Consortium CEO calls for multi-stakeholder approach to combat dangers of AI

0

Romeo Bugyei, the Chief Executive Officer of IT Consortium, one of Africa’s leading tech companies, has urged the media, private sector, and the government to collaborate to fight Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven misinformation, which he said, can pose a national security threat.

Speaking during a workshop organised by the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce (UKGCC) and the Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists (IFEJ) to commemorate World Press Freedom Day on the theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media,” Mr. Bugyei remarked, “We all know that journalists are not remunerated enough in this country, and since it is not possible to rely on free versions of AI tools all the time to combat AI-driven misinformation, it becomes more expensive to write and maintain the news”.

“This implies that someone who has the money can cause grave harm to this country and its economy without us knowing, posing a threat to the nation’s security. I think, therefore, that there can be a lot of collaboration between the private sector and the media, that can help us create the kind of truth that we want to maintain. We can also get the government alongside, as we advocate”.

He also urged journalists to raise their journalistic standards by taking the initiative to understand AI and its impact on truth and its reportage.

“You hold a very critical position in safeguarding financial data and analysis that can help the country move forward. Therefore, if you are going to wait to be taught before doing what is necessary, then you are behind,” he said.

The Media and AI: Opportunities, Risks, and Challenges

AI was officially birthed in the 1950s as a field of academia. The rise of machine learning in the 90s allowed computers to learn from data without explicit programming and in late 2022, the release of ChatGPT by OpenAI brought generative AI into the mainstream.

AI has, arguably, enhanced the journalist’s productivity. Journalists are now able to use AI-powered tools to instantly generate insights, freeing them up to produce more nuanced stories, remove language barriers, and analyse audiences.

However, AI poses more risks and challenges to freedom and expression and the right to information. These include algorithmic bias in news delivery that can skew public opinion and limit exposure to balanced reporting, censorship through AI in authoritarian regimes to silence both local and foreign journalists, biased technology platforms, and deepfakes and misinformation campaigns.

Furthermore, AI has been used to monitor journalists and access their smartphones, their location, and expose sources, making it impossible for journalists to protect whistleblowers.

AI has also impacted advertising revenue, shifting it to tech giants and away from traditional news organisations that rely on advertising income to survive and maintain press independence.

Furthermore, AI’s ability to summarise news without attribution, leads to a loss of traffic and compensation for publishers, and the consumption of derivative content by readers.

Speaking on the risks and challenges of AI, Jerry Agudogo, Senior Research Engineer at IT Consortium, remarked, “What is true and what isn’t is not just under threat, but almost destroyed now.

We don’t know what the future will hold, and we don’t have all the solutions. But we do know that journalists and the free press are essential to solving this”.

According to Mr. Agudogo, “one of the most impactful things is to do everything we can to ensure that journalists are equipped with all the AI tools to uncover information. We also need legislation, especially when it comes to the areas of surveillance and algorithmic control of content.

“The journalist as an information verifier and digital guardian will be more relevant than ever, especially now that the world is about to be flooded with more disinformation than ever”, he concluded.

Worlase Afatsiawo, Head of External Relations at UKGCC, concurred with Mr. Agudogo that while a lot of concern remains at the intersection of AI and media practice, “we can see that there is a lot of hope for the future as well.”

Mrs. Afatsiawo assured Mr. Bugyei of the UKGCC’s continued support of IT Consortium as a member company of the UKGCC, and was expectant that UKGCC and IFEJ’s relationship, in force since 2021, would continue, especially in facilitating relationships between IFEJ and the business community.

For his part, Rayborn Bulley, the President of IFEJ, shared his hope that members of the media in attendance would utilise the information acquired from the workshop to their benefit.

Aggrieved nurses demand action over unresolved land dispute

A group of aggrieved nurses under the Ghana Nurses and Midwifery Association in the Upper West Region have expressed frustration over the continued silence of the association’s regional leadership regarding a lingering land dispute in the region.

The nurses say that since 2024, they have made several petitions to the regional leadership concerning delays in the release and allocation of lands they purchased through the association.

Despite these efforts, there has been no resolution to the matter.

As part of efforts to press home their demands, the group held a press conference on April 19, during which they issued a two-week ultimatum to both the Upper West leadership of the association and the private developer responsible for securing the lands.

Speaking to Citi News on Monday, May 5, the spokesperson for the group, Dawud Habib, disclosed that they are planning a meeting this week to determine their next course of action.

“We have not been communicated to in any way or whatsoever. For the next move, I think we would have to reconvene and decide, but for now, we are planning to hold a meeting in the next few days. We are looking at it within the week, but we have not settled on the final day,” he said.
