The Digital Access to Rural Empowerment (DARE) programme has commenced a transformative digital training opportunities in Somanya and Bekwai for underserved communities in Ghana.

The first phase of the initiative, which began on Monday, May 12, 2025, is currently training 80 young mothers and women aged between 15 and 35.

The training focuses on equipping participants with practical digital skills designed to enhance employability, support entrepreneurship, and ultimately drive economic independence in rural settings.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Frederick Yeboah, Director of Innovation at Ghana India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence (GI-KACE), Consult and the Project Coordinator, said the programme is not only aimed at providing digital skills, but also expected to create pathways for sustainable livelihoods for young women and mothers in rural Ghana.

“In this first phase, we expect to train around 240 participants across the communities, preparing them to access meaningful employment opportunities or start income-generating ventures,” he stated.

Through a carefully curated curriculum, participants will be introduced to essential ICT tools, online platforms for business, and digital entrepreneurship concepts incorporating soft skills development and mentorship to support long-term success.

The ‘DARE’ programme is a timely intervention for communities like Somanya in the Yilo-Krobo Municipality and Bekwai, where digital exclusion has hindered economic growth for women and youth.

By promoting inclusion and resilience, DARE is positioning itself as a catalyst for broader socioeconomic transformation in Ghana’s rural landscape.

In partnership with the MasterCard Foundation and implemented by GI-KACE Consult, with UNESCO and University of Ghana Business School as partners, the programme is already impacting lives across its pilot locations. The programme is expected to expand its reach in subsequent phases, scaling up to include additional communities while strengthening partnerships with local leaders, state agencies, and community-based organisations.

As the training continues, early feedback from participants reflects optimism, motivation, and a renewed sense of purpose, marking a significant milestone in the journey toward digital inclusion and empowerment in Ghana.

Former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, is expected to appear before the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on Monday, June 2, 2025, in connection with an ongoing investigation into multiple financial dealings during his tenure.

The OSP had previously declared Ofori-Atta a fugitive, citing his absence from the country despite being summoned for questioning.

His name was temporarily removed from the wanted list after he assured authorities of his willingness to return voluntarily.

The OSP’s investigation involves five high-profile financial cases, including contracts related to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and payments linked to the National Cathedral project.

Responding to a tweet on X that sought clarity on the latest update regarding Ofori-Atta, and as sighted by GhanaWeb Business, the OSP stated that the former finance minister is expected to appear on June 2, 2025.

“Ken Ofori-Atta is expected to report at the headquarters of OSP on 2 June 2025. Thank you,” the office replied.

Ken Ofori-Atta, who served from 2017 to early 2024, has come under scrutiny for his role in Ghana’s economic management, including matters related to public debt, bond issuance, and emergency COVID-19 expenditures.

Ghana, Afreximbank in dispute over $768.4m loan amid debt restructuring

Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance

Ghana is reportedly engaged in a dispute with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) over the treatment of a $768.4 million loan as part of its broader debt restructuring initiative.

According to a report by bloomberg.com, the contention centers on Afreximbank’s assertion of “preferred creditor” status, a designation typically reserved for institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, which exempts them from debt restructuring.

Afreximbank maintains that its founding treaty, ratified by member states including Ghana, prohibits the restructuring of its loans.

However, the report added that Ghana’s Former Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, had stated that the government does not recognise Afreximbank’s claim to preferred creditor status and considers its debt as part of the restructureable envelope.

This disagreement arises as Ghana has made significant strides in its debt restructuring process, having completed agreements with official creditors and Eurobond holders.

The country is now focusing on the remaining 7 percent of its external debt, which involves negotiations with commercial creditors, including Afreximbank.

The outcome of this dispute could have implications not only for Ghana but also for other African nations facing similar debt challenges, such as Zambia, Kenya, and Ethiopia.

‘I will use Empress Gifty’s trademark and there is nothing you can do’

Nana Agradaa (L) and Hopeson Adorye (R) Nana Agradaa (L) and Hopeson Adorye (R)

Founder and leader of Heaven Way Ministries, Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Agradaa, has fired back at Hopeson Adorye, the husband of gospel musician Empress Gifty, for allegedly threatening her.

Prior to Agradaa’s response, Hopeson Adorye had shared a video on social media on May 20, 2025, warning the evangelist not to mention his wife’s “Noko Fine” trademark on any of her platforms.

He cautioned that Agradaa would face serious consequences if she used the trademark in any of her videos.

“Agradaa has adopted my wife’s trademark which is noko fine. And she claims she is the gazetted noko fine. Agradaa if you are a woman mention that name again on your platform and I will show you. She insulted me and my wife but I am not going to trade insults with her,” he said.

Responding to Hopeson Adorye’s statement, Agradaa, has called on the politician to do his worst.

According to the preacher, she won’t stop using Empress Gifty’s trademark and Hopeson Adorye can’t do anything about it.

“The noko fine has been gazette by me. Hopeson Adorye you are a fool and an animal. There is nothing you can do to me. Do you even have a wife like you claim? Hopeson I have mention the name and there is nothing you can do.

“You have been misbehaving in this country but this time around, you have met someone stronger than you,” she said.

Meanwhile, gospel musician Empress Gifty has filed a GH¢ 20 million defamation lawsuit against Agradaa following a viral live video on social media in which Agradaa made defamatory and insulting claims about the gospel singer.

According to a court document (the writ), on May 13, 2025, Nana Agradaa not only targeted Empress Gifty during the live session but also directed attacks at her husband, Hopeson Adorye.

The situation escalated over several days, drawing massive attention from netizens.

Odartey Lamptey names Messi, Ronaldinho and Okocha as most skilful players in the world

Messi (L), Ronaldinho (M) and Okocha (R) Messi (L), Ronaldinho (M) and Okocha (R)

Former Ghana international Nii Odartey Lamptey has revealed his top three most skilful players of all time, highlighting global icons Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho, and Jay-Jay Okocha as the finest he’s witnessed in the art of flair and creativity on the pitch.

Speaking in an interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah TV, the current Ghana U-16 coach, and ex-Black Stars star explained his admiration for the trio, recalling unforgettable moments from watching them play.

“For me, it’s Messi, Ronaldinho, and Okocha,” Lamptey said.

The 1991 FIFA U-17 World Cup Golden Ball winner spoke particularly about his admiration for Ronaldinho’s unmatched flair, Messi’s intelligence and control, and Okocha’s street-style brilliance.

Odartey, who had a rollercoaster playing career that took him from Anderlecht and PSV to Aston Villa and Boca Juniors, now spends his time grooming young talents and running his Glow-Lamp International School in Accra.

His coaching philosophy emphasizes not just discipline, but also creativity, something he believes has been lost in today’s overly structured football.

Known for his early promise and dazzling footwork as a teenager, Lamptey’s career was filled with both brilliance and misfortune.

His reflections on skilful players are not just nostalgic tributes, but lessons he now passes on to the next generation of Ghanaian talent.

Lamptey is currently leading Ghana’s U-16 team while continuing his work in youth development through his football academy in Elmina.

What confusion is making it difficult for you to settle down with a woman? — Afia slams Owusu Bempah

0

Afia Schwarzenegger has launched a fierce verbal attack against Apostle Isaac Owusu Bempah, a well-known religious figure, over his repeated remarks targeting the New Patriotic Party (NPP), according to reports by GhanaWeb.

Before the December 7, 2024 general elections, Apostle Owusu Bempah was vocal in his belief that the NPP would lose power.

His prediction came to pass, and since then, the head of Glorious Word Power Ministries International has continued to speak critically about the party’s direction.

Recently, he expressed support for Kennedy Agyapong, a former lawmaker and 2024 presidential aspirant, suggesting he should lead the party into the 2028 elections.

Owusu Bempah also shared hopes that current President John Dramani Mahama would either extend his time in office or name a successor, to whom he promised spiritual support in the next election.

These continued public statements have not sat well with Afia Schwarzenegger. In a recent TikTok video, she voiced her frustration with the pastor’s persistent commentary on the NPP.

She mocked his personal life, suggesting he should prioritize finding a partner rather than involving himself in political matters.

According to Afia, his history of failed relationships should take precedence over his opinions on party leadership, and she questioned why he continues to face challenges in settling down.

Afia made it clear that she believes Owusu Bempah should redirect his focus away from the NPP and toward resolving his own personal issues, stating: “What confusion has been set in your life that is making it difficult for you to settle down with a woman?”

A New City for Ghana? Yes—But Let’s Get It Right

0

The writer

By Francis Asenso-Boakye, Ranking Member, Parliamentary Committee on Local Government & Rural Development

In a recent address, President John Dramani Mahama announced an ambitious plan to construct a new city in Ghana, aimed at decongesting the national capital, Accra. The proposal has since sparked widespread public interest and debate. As someone who has served in both executive and legislative arms of government—and as a student of planning and local governance—I feel compelled to offer a constructive perspective on this timely issue.

The Problem Is Real

Accra is undoubtedly overstretched. The city bears the heavy burden of being the political, commercial, administrative, and cultural hub of Ghana. What we see today are the consequences of decades of uncoordinated urban growth, underinvestment in infrastructure, and the absence of strong spatial planning.

From traffic gridlock to overcrowded schools and hospitals, unplanned settlements to inadequate sanitation systems, the symptoms of urban stress are clear. In this context, the idea of creating a new, planned city to redistribute economic activity and population pressure is not only reasonable, but also necessary.

Global Precedent Exists

History offers us useful examples. Nigeria moved its capital from Lagos to Abuja to deal with congestion and spatial inequality. Tanzania recently shifted many government functions from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma. Even here in Ghana, plans were once made for a new administrative capital outside Accra. In many advanced countries, the biggest cities are not necessarily the capital cities. There is a good reason for that. The concept is not new—but execution is everything.

Is it Feasible?

This is where caution is warranted. Building a city is not a four-year political project. It is a multi-generational national undertaking. It requires strong political will, bipartisan support, massive financial resources, and—above all—strategic clarity.

Before breaking ground, Ghanaians deserve answers to key questions:

  • Where will this city be located—and why there?
  • What industries or services will anchor its economy?
  • Who will build and fund it—government, private sector, or through public-private partnership (PPP)?
  • How will land acquisition be handled, especially with regard to traditional authority and community rights?
  • What legal and governance frameworks will guide the development?

Without these answers, the new city risks becoming just another vanity project, mired in delays, speculation, or abandonment.

Planning Must Be at the Centre

As a development planner and legislator, I cannot overemphasise the importance of good planning. A new city must not simply be an extension of existing dysfunction in concrete. It must be a model of urban resilience—incorporating green spaces, integrated transport, inclusive housing, digital infrastructure, and climate-smart design.

We must also avoid the centralisation of authority. Local government systems should be built into the DNA of the new city, with functioning assemblies and empowered communities. Institutions matter. People matter.

A Call for a Thoughtful, National Dialogue

Let me be clear: I do not oppose the idea of a new city. On the contrary, I believe such a vision, if properly executed, could be transformative. But it must be backed by a clear, costed blueprint, subject to public and parliamentary scrutiny, and anchored in law.

We must also guard against politicisation. Cities are not built with slogans; they are built with discipline, long-term commitment, and collaboration. A new city must be a national project, not a partisan one.

Conclusion

Ghana stands at a crossroads. We can either seize this moment to plan boldly and responsibly for the future—or repeat the mistakes of the past with grand announcements that fade into forgotten headlines.

As Ranking Member for Local Government and a firm believer in sustainable development, I urge the government, planners, traditional leaders, and civil society to treat this proposal with the seriousness it deserves. It’s good to dream big—but let’s also plan smart.

Electroland passes on forex gains to consumers with ‘Cedis Apicki’ promo

0

Electroland Ghana, one of the country’s leading consumer electronics dealers, has announced significant price reductions across its product range in response to the sustained appreciation of the Ghana Cedi against major foreign currencies.

The company’s “Cedis Apicki” promotion reflects the local currency’s remarkable 17.17 percent gain against the US Dollar since January 2025.

This strategic price adjustment aligns with the government’s plea for businesses to lower prices with the Cedis improved performance.

Head of Marketing and Media Relations at Electroland Ghana, Adiza Ibrahim, emphasised the company’s commitment to passing on forex benefits to consumers as a responsible and customer-centric entity.

She noted that the exchange rate has always been a critical pricing factor for importers, hence an appreciation reflects in its operation just like depreciation.

“With Ghana’s economic resurgence and the Cedis impressive recovery, we’re excited to share these gains through substantial price cuts. Our ‘Cedi Apicki’ promo celebrates this economic milestone with the Ghanaian consumers who make our business thrive,” she said.

The promotion runs concurrently with ongoing unprecedented discounts and freebies in the Akyedea Kesea giveaway, which features across-the-board price reductions on electronics and appliances, special freebies on select product models, and nationwide availability at all Electroland showrooms.

Government Appeal Implemented

The price reduction initiative directly responds to recent government appeals for businesses to adjust pricing to reflect the Cedi’s strengthened position. Electroland leads the retail sector in implementing this consumer-friendly measure.

Consumers can enjoy these exceptional offers at any Electroland Ghana showroom nationwide.

In the Ghanaian business environment, the exchange rate is the major component of pricing, especially for importers. With the recent blooming of the Ghanaian economy in general, combined with the appreciation of the Ghana Cedis against other foreign currencies,

“Electroland Ghana Ltd is glad to announce gargantuan reductions on all our prices. Electroland Ghana Ltd believes our customers are shareholders in our business, thus, we should celebrate,” she reiterated.

Electroland Ghana Ltd is a leading retailer of SAMSUNG, TCL, Midea and NASCO electronic appliances in Ghana, committed to providing quality products and excellent customer service.

Ghana’s economy showing early signs of stabilisation

0

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama has stated that Ghana’s economy is showing early signs of stabilisation, supported by recent policy measures and improving economic fundamentals, both domestic and external.

He made these remarks during the opening of the 124th Meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) in Accra on Wednesday, May 21, 2025.

“We convene at a time when Ghana’s macroeconomic conditions are exhibiting early signs of stabilization, supported by recent policy actions and improving external and domestic fundamentals,” Dr Asiama stated.

However, he was quick to caution that “the path ahead remains complex and fraught with risks, both global and domestic.”

The Governor highlighted recent developments in the economy, including a notable decline in inflation and a strong appreciation of the cedi.

According to the Ghana Statistical Service, inflation dropped to 21.2% in April 2025, down from previous highs, although it remains above the Bank’s medium-term target of 8 ± 2%.

“In March, the Committee responded decisively to the inflation outlook by raising the policy rate by 100 basis points to 28 percent. Preliminary evidence suggests this action has contributed to dampening inflation momentum,” Dr Asiama said.

He noted that the Ghanaian cedi had appreciated sharply by nearly 19% between April and May, a development he credited to prudent monetary policy, improved market sentiment, and gains in the external sector.

“This appreciation has helped ease imported inflation pressures and restore public confidence,” he added.

Dr Johnson Asiama also referenced Ghana’s recent progress under the IMF’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme.

“Ghana has reached a Staff-Level Agreement with the IMF on the Fourth Review of the ECF Programme… the trajectory is clearly positive,” he noted.

Additionally, the recent S&P credit rating upgrade from Selective Default to CCC+ was cited as further affirmation of economic progress.

Despite these gains, the BoG Governor acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly concerning inflation risks from food supply constraints, global commodity price volatility, and geopolitical tensions, including the recent US-led tariff disputes.

In response, he mentioned that the Bank is revising its monetary policy implementation framework, moving away from the reliance on the unremunerated Cash Reserve Ratio to more active Open Market Operations using longer-tenor instruments.

“This is intended to enhance policy transmission, improve liquidity management, and allow greater room for credit expansion to the private sector,” Dr Asiama explained.

He also emphasised the importance of the Committee’s policy decisions and the need for clear communication.

“Our post-meeting communiqué must clearly articulate the rationale behind our policy decisions and provide an accessible, transparent account of recent economic trends,” he urged.

As the MPC Committee meets to deliberate on the appropriate monetary policy stance going forward, Dr Asiama posed key questions:

• Is the observed exchange rate appreciation sustainable?

• How durable is the nascent return of market confidence?

• What are the implications of these dynamics for our inflation forecast over the medium term?

He concluded his remarks by calling on members to approach their deliberations with professionalism and rigor.

“Our credibility depends on our ability to respond decisively and proportionately to evolving economic realities,” the BoG Governor rallied.

The Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) will on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, begin its 124th meeting to review recent macroeconomic developments and assess the country’s economic outlook.

This meeting is significant as it comes on the back of recent gains by the Ghana Cedi against the US dollar and ongoing efforts to tame inflation.

At its last meeting, the MPC increased the monetary policy rate by 100 basis points to 28 percent.

Already, some market watchers expect the BoG to maintain the policy rate at 28 percent, with any potential cuts dependent on continued disinflation.

The MPC’s decision on the policy rate will have implications for lending costs, investor confidence, and overall economic activity.

The meeting will conclude with a press briefing on Friday, May 23, 2025 to provide further clarity on the central bank’s monetary stance and the measures it intends to take in sustaining economic stability.

Special Aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has expressed the view that the committee established to hear petitions regarding the removal of the suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo should be allowed to complete its work.

According to him, once the committee has completed its work, those opposing the Chief Justice’s removal will be in a better position to thoroughly examine and critique the issue.

In Miracles Aboagye’s submission, he argued that the entire process surrounding the Chief Justice’s removal was part of a premeditated plan, with the decision already made.

He stated that no matter what is said, it will not be enough to persuade the government to reverse its decision to remove the Chief Justice.

“… It is something that has been planned already, and so, I suggest we stop talking about it and allow the committee to complete its work before we delve into it. Also, when we stop talking about it, it will hasten the entire process because what they want to do has already been secretly orchestrated behind closed doors.

“They are hell bent on removing the CJ, and any petition that will come up against it will amount to nothing because they will intentionally ask for evidence to back such claims, leading to a back and forth,” he said on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on Wednesday, May 21, 2025.

Gertrude Torkornoo was suspended by President John Dramani Mahama after a prima facie case was established against her on April 22, 2025.

This decision was made by the President in consultation with the Council of State, following three petitions filed against the Chief Justice.

A five-member committee was also established, in accordance with constitutional provisions, to investigate the petitions that were referred to it.

‘Unmasking’ the two companies at the centre of the ‘missing’ $2 million

0

File photo of a Sky Train File photo of a Sky Train

The former Board Chairperson of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Prof Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi and the former Chief Executive Officer of GIIF, Solomon Asamoah, are being prosecuted for their involvement in the Accra Sky Train Project, which the erstwhile Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government sought to implement.

The two officials are being prosecuted for allegedly expending $2 million of state funds on the “botched” project.

State prosecutors have cited two African entities – Africa Investor Holdings (Proprietary) Limited and Ai SkyTrain Consortium Holdings – as the entities that received the $2 million Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi and Solomon Asamoah are being prosecuted for.

The public, however, is yet to hear from these two companies and scanty details have been shared about them by the state.

Do these companies exist or are they mere fictions to loot from the state? Here is what GhanaWeb found about the two companies.

Africa Investor Holdings Limited:

Africa Investor Holdings (Proprietary) Limited, according to the facts of the case, was the partner of the GIIF in the Accra Sky Train project in a “design, finance, build and operate” contract.

State prosecutors indicated that Africa Investor Holdings was a company incorporated under the laws of the Seychelles.

A search by GhanaWeb on the official company registry of the Seychelles government (registry.gov.sc and egov.sc) for Africa Investor Holdings (Proprietary) Limited and Africa Investor Holdings Limited showed no result.

The only official website that had details of the company was the UK government registrar of companies, Companies House.

The details on the Companies House website showed that Africa Investor Holdings Limited was a “limited company” incorporated in “Seychelles” with the address “Second Floor The Quadrant, Manglier Street, P O Box 1312, Victoria, Mahe, Seychelles”.

A Nigerian by the name Olatunji Okulaja was listed as a partner. The beneficial owners of the company included two Nigerians, Adetokunbo Fayemiwo and Adetokunbo Fayemiwo.

It is imperative to note that Companies House does not verify information on companies on the website.

Ai SkyTrain Consortium Holdings

The second company mentioned in the prosecution’s facts was Ai SkyTrain Consortium Holdings, which was apparently owned by Africa Investor Holdings Limited.

In the agreement, Africa Investor Holdings Limited was to transfer 10 per cent of its alleged 100% shares in Ai SkyTrain Consortium Holdings, a limited liability company registered in Mauritius, to GIIF.

The GIIF, in turn, was to pay a lump sum of $2 million as the price for the alleged shares, which was apparently authorised by Solomon Asamoah and approved by Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi.

The report on techlabari.com indicated that “Ai Sky Train Consortium Holdings is yet to obtain the licence for ‘Aeromovel Technology’, required for the Sky Train Project. Feasibility studies are reported to be still ongoing.”

A search of the official company registry for Mauritius, the Corporate and Business Registration Department (CBRD), showed that the company no longer existed.

The company, which had its official address as “24 Cybercity, 5th Floor, Ebene Esplanade, Ebene, Mauritius”, was incorporated on December 11, 2018 and was defunct as of April 4, 2025.

In conclusion, it appears the government of Ghana paid $2 million to companies that no longer exist. These companies did not even have official websites.

The details above only leave us with the question: Was “a whole” government of Ghana scammed?

Ato Forson’s 4-month economic record surpasses 8-year era of NPP

Osman Abdulai Ayariga, Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA) Osman Abdulai Ayariga, Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA)

Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Osman Abdulai Ayariga has praised the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, for what he described as effectively managing Ghana’s economy within a short period.

Speaking on GHOne TV during a panel discussion on May 21, 2025, Ayariga stated that the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government plunged Ghanaians into undue hardship.

However, he claimed that under just a few months of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, the economy is beginning to recover.

According to Ayariga, the former government was responsible for severe economic hardship, broken promises, and the introduction of burdensome taxes.

“The current Minister of Finance has achieved more in four months, in terms of economic management, than the previous government,” he said.

He cited the controversial E-Levy, betting tax, and other financial impositions as deliberate policies that worsened the economic situation, especially for the youth.

“The NPP should apologise to the youth for failing to create jobs and for burdening us with the e-levy, betting tax, and all the other taxes that caused suffering and pain,” Ayariga added.

The NYA CEO further stated that Ghanaians should not consider returning the NPP to power.

He argued that under the leadership of President John Mahama and Finance Minister Ato Forson, genuine efforts are being made to steer the economy back on track, rendering any apology from the NPP on economic issues “lacking in credibility.”

Former Ghana international Kwesi Appiah has capped off a stellar season in England by winning three individual awards and helping Boreham Wood seal promotion to the National League.

The 34-year-old striker was named Players’ Player of the Season, Supporters’ Player of the Season, and finished as the club’s Top Goal Scorer, after netting 24 goals in the league.

His efforts were instrumental in Boreham Wood’s rise from a fifth-place finish in the National League South to a triumphant playoff run.

Appiah’s side edged Dorking Wanderers 4-3 in a thrilling quarter-final, before securing a tight 1-0 win over Torquay United in the semis.

The final saw Boreham Wood clinch promotion with another 1-0 victory, this time over Maidstone United.

Though he fell just three goals short of Truro City’s Harvey Tyler, who won the Golden Boot with 27 strikes, Appiah’s overall influence was undeniable, earning him acclaim from teammates and fans alike.

The former Crystal Palace forward shared his pride on social media.

“Promotion! Players’ Player of the Season, Supporters’ Player of the Season, Top Goal Scorer. Honoured. Humbled. Now it’s time to rest, reset, and prepare for the next challenge. The journey continues!” he posted.

Appiah’s resurgence at Boreham Wood is the latest chapter in a career filled with highs and setbacks.

A key member of Ghana’s squad at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, he scored one goal in four appearances during the tournament, where the Black Stars suffered a heartbreaking loss to Ivory Coast in the final.

Now 34, Appiah has shown he still has plenty to offer, both in front of goal and as a leader in the dressing room.

His experience and finishing touch were vital as Boreham Wood earned their spot in the National League for the 2025/26 season.

Amnesty Int’l Ghana renews call for full abolition of death penalty

0

Amnesty International Ghana is urging a constitutional amendment to completely abolish the death penalty from Ghana’s legal framework.

The call came during the launch of two major global human rights reports—The Death Sentences and Executions Report 2024 and the Annual Human Rights Report—held on Wednesday, May 21.

Following the passage of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) and the Ghana Armed Forces Act, 1962 (Act 105) in July 2023, which removed the death penalty from certain statutes, the advocacy group insists that retaining it in any form remains a violation of fundamental human rights.

Speaking at the launch, Genevieve Partington, Country Director of Amnesty International Ghana, emphasized that the group is working with the Constitutional Review Commission to eliminate all legal grounds for capital punishment.

“Ghana took a bold step by removing the death penalty from its Criminal and other Offences Act. But we must finish the journey and abolish it completely from all laws.

We’re engaging with the Constitutional Review Commission for the removal of the death penalty, which is still in our Constitution. High treason needs to be removed from our law books,” Partington stated.

Despite progress in repealing certain laws, the death penalty still exists in Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, specifically for offences such as high treason. By the end of 2024, 182 individuals remained on death row in the country.

Amnesty International Ghana continues to advocate for the protection of human rights and the expansion of civic freedoms, urging lawmakers to take the final step in aligning Ghana’s laws with its international human rights obligations.

OKESS firearm case: student, stepfather granted GHC 80,000 bail

0

By Muyid Deen Suleman

Kumasi, May 21, GNA – A District Court in Mamponteng, in the Kwabre East Municipality, has granted bail in the sum of GHC 50,000 to a 16-year-old student of the Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (OKESS) who is at the centre of police investigation for unlawful possession of firearm.

The court, presided over by Natacha Abena Tuffour, also granted GHC 30,000 bail to the father of the suspect, Mr. Daniel Owusu Baafi whom the suspect claimed was the owner of the firearm.

The bail was subject to the provision of two sureties each.

One of the sureties for the student must be a government employee or a senior staff member earning no less than GHC 4,000 monthly.

The same condition applies to the stepfather, though the income threshold for his surety is GHC 3,000.

Their plea was not taken by the court.

According to police prosecutors, the incident occurred on May 14, 2025, when an assistant headmaster of the school discovered the student (name withheld) in possession of a locally manufactured pistol while on campus.

The student was promptly handed over to the police.

Subsequent investigations led to the apprehension of the student’s stepfather, who is a pastor.

The two were subsequently granted police enquiry bail prior to being formally charged under Section 192 of Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), which forbids the unlawful possession of firearms.

The police, however, revealed in court on Wednesday that the stepfather denied ownership of the weapon, asserting in his caution statement that the pistol belonged to his late uncle, who passed away a year ago.

He contended that the firearm had been stored in his uncle’s room, which the boy later occupied and from which he allegedly retrieved the weapon.

The court has adjourned the proceedings to June 17, 2025.

Mahama’s gift rules in Code of Conduct contradictory

President John Dramani Mahama and Michael Boadi President John Dramani Mahama and Michael Boadi

Fundraising Manager of anti-corruption non-governmental organisation, Transparency International, Michael Boadi, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama’s gift rules in the recently unveiled Code of Conduct for public officials, describing them as unclear, contradictory, and susceptible to misuse.

In an interview on Joy FM, monitored by GhanaWeb on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, he pointed out that while the code prohibits accepting gifts whether in cash or in kind, it also allows exceptions, creating what he described as double standards.

“You would realise that the code is very heavy on the accountability and transparency component, but very weak on the issue of specificity and clarity because it leans more on double standards,” he said.

He also challenged the GH¢20,000 threshold for declaring gifts, calling it too high and out of touch with local realities.

“While GH¢20,000 may not compromise ministers in Accra, it is a significant amount that can easily influence District Chief Executives in remote communities,” he explained.

Boadi stressed that best practices globally set much lower limits to prevent undue influence and warned that Ghana’s current standard risks enabling corruption at various levels of government.

He called for a clearer and stricter code that balances transparency and accountability with practical and fair limits across all public offices.

President Mahama has unveiled a Code of Conduct for all political appointees under his administration, spelling out new rules on ethical behaviour, public accountability, and misuse of office.

Among its key provision is a directive banning appointees from accepting gifts and buying state assets.

Govt needs $562bn to complete energy transition by 2070

0

The Ministry for Energy and Green Transition has revealed that Ghana will require an estimated $562 billion to fully complete its energy transition agenda by the year 2070 as the country finalises plans for a nuclear power project, with construction expected to begin by 2027.

According to the Energy Ministry, a variety of ongoing projects, including solar mini-grids for island communities and the development of 33 new mini-grids, are evidence of Ghana’s steady progress.

Speaking on the sidelines of a stakeholder engagement on Ghana’s Energy Transition Framework held on Wednesday, May 21, in Accra, the Deputy Director for Renewables and Green Emerging Technologies at the Energy Ministry, Dr. Robert Sogbadji, cited the development of 33 new solar mini-grids for island communities and other renewable initiatives.

“As of now, Ghana is putting all efforts into adhering to our energy transition framework. Currently, we have more than 89% access to electricity. Energy transition is supposed to be nationwide and implemented by all regions and District Chief Executives. So, efforts have to be made to ensure that awareness is created to ensure that whatever activity or project they undergo, they also take into consideration the energy transition.

“We need about $562 billion to complete this energy transition by 2070. It’s not only the government that has to cough up this money. It includes- private sector, development partners, multi-national development banks to bring in money to make sure that we transition smoothly,” Dr. Robert Sogbadji said.

Cedi stability is due to government’s fiscal discipline, not NPP policies – Dr Sharif Khalid

0

Economic Advisor to the Vice President, Dr Sharif Mahmud Khalid Economic Advisor to the Vice President, Dr Sharif Mahmud Khalid

Economic Advisor to Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Dr Sharif Mahmud Khalid, has countered claims by former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia that the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi is due to policies implemented by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

During an interaction with the Young Executive Forum in London, as part of his Thank You Tour, Dr Bawumia argued that the cedi’s recent stability results from the gold reserves initiative introduced under the Akufo-Addo government.

He challenged the current administration to name any policy they have implemented that has contributed to the cedi’s appreciation.

However, speaking on CitiFM on May 20, 2025, Dr Khalid emphasised that the cedi’s recent gains can be attributed to the current government’s fiscal discipline, expenditure cuts, and commitment to economic programs.

He questioned the effectiveness of the previous administration’s gold-for-oil program, noting that the cedi was not performing as expected and inflation was rising during its implementation.

“You would see that even in the wake of the gold-for-oil programme, the Cedi was not performing as it should, and inflation was still rising. So, where is this claim coming from?” he questioned.

Dr Khalid further argued that the current administration inherited an overheated economy characterised by negative indicators, including central bank losses and a domestic debt exchange program.

He credited the government’s commitment to painful reforms, such as the domestic debt exchange program and engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), for the observed macroeconomic stability.

20 Irresistibly Cute Kids’ Dresses Every Parent Is Talking About in 2025

0

Dressing children is a joyful experience, especially when it involves selecting pretty dresses that combine style, comfort, and playfulness. Kids’ fashion has evolved to offer a wide variety of beautiful dresses suited for various occasions, personalities, and seasons. Whether it’s a birthday party, a family gathering, or a casual day at the park, stylish dresses help children look adorable while staying comfortable and free to play.

One of the most popular styles for young girls is the classic A-line dress. Its flattering cut falls gently from the shoulders, making it suitable for both formal and casual settings. Often made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen, A-line dresses are ideal for active children. They are frequently decorated with charming details such as lace, ribbons, or floral prints, adding a touch of elegance without sacrificing comfort.

For special occasions like weddings or formal events, fancy dresses with intricate designs—such as sequins, tulle skirts, and satin finishes—create a fairy-tale look. These dresses come in a range of colors, from soft pastels to bold shades, allowing every child to shine.

Seasonal variations are also important. In warmer weather, sleeveless or short-sleeved dresses paired with sandals keep kids cool. In colder months, long-sleeved dresses worn with tights, leggings, or cardigans ensure warmth while maintaining style.

Vibrant patterns, including florals, polka dots, and whimsical prints featuring animals or characters, add fun and imagination to children’s wardrobes.

In conclusion, pretty dresses for kids perfectly balance fashion and function, making every child feel confident, stylish, and comfortable.

Notorious ‘Robber’ Suffers Mental Health Episode

0

Adinda-Akpo Abdou Moundjibou

A Circuit Court in Accra has been told that the notorious robbery suspect extradited from Togo, Adinda-Akpo Abdou Moundjibou aka Maxwel, “is behaving strangely,” including eating his own poo.

The police are not certain whether he is indeed having a psychiatric issue or is trying to falsify one, just to avoid trial for the robbery he allegedly committed in April 2024, before fleeing to neighbouring Togo.

The suspect, according to court documents, robbed a medical doctor of $200,000 and other personal belongings worth thousands of Ghana Cedis.

He had been on the run since April last year, and was arrested in Togo in January this year, through the efforts of the INTERPOL.

He was subsequently extradited to Ghana to stand trial for the robbery.

The documents indicate that the accused entered the complainant’s bedroom through the washroom window, wearing a face mask and pointed a gun at her, and ordered her to surrender her valuables.

ASP Amoah Richard told the court yesterday that the accused person started behaving strangely after his cautioned statement was taken, including eating his own poo.

He said they could not tell whether he was faking or he actually had a mental episode, and prayed the court for an order to send the accused to the psychiatric hospital for mental evaluation.

The court did not take his plea, and subsequently remanded the suspect into the custody of National Intelligence Bureau and ordered that he be taken to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital for evaluation.

Meanwhile, Marzouk Alidu, an Okada rider charged for abetting Adinda-Akpo Abdou Moundjibou in the robbery and many others by transporting him to the crime scene, is still in custody despite being granted bail by the court.

He has not been able to meet the terms of the bail set by the court, after pleading not guilty to the charge of abetment of robbery.

Court documents indicate that Adinda-Akpo Abdou Moundjibou ransacked the complainant’s room and robbed her of items including $200,000 cash, a gold waist chain valued at GH¢20,000, gold necklace valued at GH¢18,000, assorted jewelry including gold earrings, brooches etc. valued at GH¢5,000 and a registered CZ 75.5P pistol belonging to the complainant’s husband.

He allegedly packed all the booty into a backpack, warned the complainant to lock herself in the room and then bolted.

The complainant later reported the matter to the police for investigation.

Investigation later revealed that Moundjibou was conveyed to the scene on a motorbike by Alidu, who was arrested on September 4, 2024 at East Airport after another robbery operation with Moundjibou.

Upon interrogation, Alidu admitted conveying Moundjibou on his motorbike to the complainant’s house for the robbery, and picked him off the scene after the robbery.

He provided the police with the location of Moundjibou, but the accused narrowly escaped arrest when police stormed the residence.

Moundjibou went into hiding until he was arrested in Togo, and was later extradited to Ghana to face trial.

Cedi appreciation driven by mixed domestic and global factors – Prof. Quartey

0

By Hafsa Obeng

Accra, May 21, GNA – Professor Peter Quartey, Director of the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER), says the recent appreciation of the cedi is the result of a complex mix of domestic and international factors.

Prof. Quartey emphasized that while the cedi had faced downward pressure, some domestic policies were actively helping to mitigate the decline.

The Director was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, on the back of a two-day conference of Merian Institute of Advanced Studies in Africa’s (MIASA’s) 12th Interdisciplinary Fellow Group (IFG12) in Accra.

The conference was on the theme: “Cash in Crisis in Africa: Navigating Financial Realities in Times of Disruption.”

It is aimed at exploring the often conflicting dynamics between policy and governance frameworks and crises in shaping the circulation, accessibility and utilization of cash, in an

increasingly digitized African society.

He pointed to the government’s Gold for Reserves programme as a positive step in cushioning the impact of global economic instability.

“Domestically, the gold for reserves policy is helping because of what is happening globally,” he said.

Prof. Quartey said there were improvements in fiscal discipline, indicating that the government was currently living within its means, spending within the limits of what it raises in revenue.

“If we were running an excessive deficit, we would have to borrow more, and that would increase interest payments and put pressure on the cedi. But we are not doing that now,” he explained.

He commended the improved coordination between the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana, noting a more unified and transparent approach to economic management.

“I find the Bank of Ghana to be more engaged now and they are carrying the public along, explaining policies and reforms. When you do that, people gain confidence in the local currency and that strengthens the cedi,” he said.

Prof. Quartey pointed to global tensions, particularly

the ongoing trade dynamics between the United States and China, as a contributing factor to the weakening of the US dollar.

However, he expressed optimism that as tariff-related disputes eased and international agreements took shape, global currency markets were likely to stabilize.

He urged the government to stay the course with its current domestic strategies, warning that any deviation could reverse the progress made.

“If we continue doing what we are doing domestically, we will see more stability in the cedi, otherwise, the depreciation could worsen again,” he said.

Prof Gatsi, John Kwakye join BoG’s monetary Policy Committee as Advisors

0

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has appointed three advisors to its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), to strengthen the country’s monetary policy formulation and macroeconomic stability.

The advisors are Dr. John Kwabena Kwakye, Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA); Prof. John Gatsi, Dean of the University of Cape Coast Business School; and Dr. Francis Kumah, a seasoned economist and former IMF Resident Representative.

Announcing the appointments at the opening of the 124th MPC meeting in Accra on May 21, 2025, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, described the trio as “distinguished professionals with deep technical expertise and policy insight” who are expected to contribute to more robust, evidence-based decision-making.

He said that the appointments are part of broader efforts to modernise and diversify the perspectives informing monetary policy.

He added that Prof. Gatsi’s expertise would also be instrumental in advancing Ghana’s implementation of non-interest (Islamic) banking.

The ongoing MPC meeting comes at a crucial time, as the central bank evaluates the sustainability of the Ghana cedi’s recent 19% year-to-date appreciation, monitors renewed market confidence and weighs the medium-term inflation trajectory amid easing global and domestic pressures.

The Committee’s next policy rate decision is expected to be announced at a press briefing on Friday, May 23.

The strike, effective Wednesday, May 21, is to protest the government’s persistent inaction and failure to honour a signed agreement reached six months ago.

1. Arrest Over Alleged Money-Doubling Scam

In October 2022, Nana Agradaa was arrested by the Ghana Police Service following allegations of a money-doubling scam. She was accused of deceiving members of her church by promising to double their money but failing to deliver. The police urged victims to report to assist in investigations.

2. Controversial Conversion to Christianity

After her arrest, Agradaa announced her conversion to Christianity, adopting the name Evangelist.

She claimed to have abandoned her ‘Sika Gari’ money-doubling practices and destroyed her idols. However, many Ghanaians expressed skepticism, viewing her conversion as a strategy to avoid legal consequences.

3. Feud with Rev. Owusu Bempah

Agradaa has had a contentious relationship with Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah over the past few years.

In 2023, she allegedly spread false rumors about his death, prompting him to refute the claims and consider legal action. Another confrontation led to Owusu Bempah and some of his junior pastors being arrested after they were seen brandishing weapons around her premises.

In 2024, Owusu Bempah accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of using Agradaa to attack him after he prophesied about political events in the lead up to the December 7 general elections.

4. Sammy Gyamfi Dollar Gift Controversy

In May 2025, a video surfaced showing Sammy Gyamfi, Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, handing over $800 to Agradaa during a public event.

The gesture sparked public outrage, with critics questioning the appropriateness of such a gift from a government official. He later apologised, and NPP’s Owusu Bempah defended him, stating that the gift was a private matter.

Agradaa, however, remained apologetic, even using the incident to promote a ‘special oil’ and bragging that she would get a bagful of cash if she gets to meet the president.

5. Defamation Lawsuit by Empress Gifty

Gospel musician Empress Gifty filed a defamation lawsuit against Agradaa in May 2025, seeking GH₵20 million in damages.

The lawsuit alleges that Agradaa made defamatory statements about Empress Gifty and her husband, Hopeson Adorye, during a live broadcast on social media.

Empress Gifty claims that these statements have caused significant harm to her reputation and personal life.

Agradaa, unfazed by the lawsuit, took to social media to rain more insults on the couple.

Supreme Court dismisses suit seeking reversal of Torkornoo’s suspension in 4-1 verdict

0

Gertrude Torkornoo has been suspended from office as the Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has been suspended from office as the Chief Justice

The Supreme Court has dismissed an action filed by the Centre for Citizenship, Constitutional and Electoral Systems (CenCES), which sought to reverse President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to suspend the Chief Justice and to halt the work of the removal committee.

The decision was reached by a 4-1 majority of a five-member panel chaired by Acting Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie. The majority votes came from Justice Tanko Amadu, Justice Yonny Kulendi, and Justice Henry Kwofie, alongside the Chair.

However, Justice Yaw Asare Darko dissented, resulting in a split 4-1 decision.

The Centre for Citizenship, Constitutional and Electoral Systems, a civil society organisation, sought to contest the constitutionality of Torkornoo’s removal process.

This followed President John Dramani Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo on April 22, 2025, after a prima facie case was established against her based on petitions from private citizen Daniel Ofori, senior police officer Ayamga Akolgo, and the civic advocacy group Shining Stars of Ghana.

Among the reliefs they sought was a declaration that the President’s response to the petitions was unconstitutional, citing violations of Articles 17(1)–(3), 23, 296, and 146(1)–(4) and (6) of the 1992 Constitution.

The organisation contends that the process lacked due process and failed to uphold constitutional principles of fairness, non-discrimination, and lawful administrative conduct.

The dismissal of the suit by the Supreme Court follows a similar case on May 6, 2025, when the Court, in a 3-2 ruling, rejected an application to injunct the removal process and lift the Chief Justice’s suspension.

Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, along with Justices Yonny Kulendi and Amadu Tanko, delivered the majority decision, while Justices Henrietta Mensah Bonsu and Ernest Gaewu dissented.

Inside the $2m Sky Train Scandal: The two companies involved

0

File photo of a Sky Train File photo of a Sky Train

The former Board Chairperson of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi and the former Chief Executive Officer of GIIF, Solomon Asamoah, are being prosecuted for their involvement in the Accra Sky Train Project, which the erstwhile Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government sought to implement.

Napoli forward Victor Osimhen and Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman have been left out of Nigeria’s squad that will face the Black Stars in the 2025 Unity Cup.

According to the squad announced by Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, the two top players were omitted from the squad for the tournament, with the reason yet to be disclosed.

The attackers include AC Milan’s Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Kelechi Iheanacho, and others who will be leading the line.

The absence of the two key players for Nigeria will reduce the pressure on the Black Stars when they face each other.

The winners of these matches will advance directly to the final. The losing teams will play in a third-place match scheduled for May 31, 2025.

Meanwhile, head coach Otto Addo is yet to announce the Black Stars squad for the tournament as momentum builds ahead of the rivalry clash.

There are high expectations for the team after their impressive performance, thrashing Madagascar and Chad in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

From Street Struggles to Fashion CEO

In the quiet town of Bonsu Nsutem in the Eastern Region of Ghana, a young girl was born into circumstances far removed from comfort and privilege. Her name is Dora Opare—a name that today is becoming synonymous with resilience, hope, and the raw power of determination.

Dora’s story is not one wrapped in fairy tale beginnings. It is a tale carved out of hardship, stitched with pain, but sewn together with courage. Her early life was defined by the absence of a father figure and the relentless hustle of a sick mother who sold petty items just to keep the household afloat. Even in those early years, life was teaching Dora how to survive with little and smile with less.

But the real test of her spirit came during her secondary school days at Nsutem Senior High School, located in the heart of Bonsu Nsutem. While many of her peers worried about exam scores and crushes, Dora’s greatest concern each morning was where her next meal would come from. Breakfast was a luxury she could barely dream of—lunch and supper, a gamble. Her classroom became a battlefield where hunger fought with her desire to learn. And yet, she never gave up.

At just 16 years old, Dora made a bold, life-altering decision: she left the confines of her school environment to search for daily hustles outside the gates. With courage larger than her age, she journeyed to Kumasi and later Accra, chasing any job that could offer her a few cedis to keep surviving and keep learning. In a society that often preys on the vulnerability of beautiful, young girls, Dora had to fight not only poverty but the unwanted advances and risks that came with being a young woman hustling in the streets.

And somehow, she made it. She returned to school, paid her fees, and against all odds, completed her secondary education.

But if she thought that was the end of her hardship, life had more trials waiting.

After school, the job market was unforgiving. She found herself in Accra, a city of contradictions—opportunity and struggle walking hand in hand. Some nights, with no home to return to, Dora laid her head on roadside pavements under the night sky. Alone. Hungry. But not hopeless.

Through it all, she clung to a childhood dream—to become a model. It was the only spark of beauty in a life often filled with bleakness. But dreams don’t pay the bills, and Dora had a critically ill mother and a younger sister depending on her. With the little money she scraped together from menial jobs, she paid for her mother’s medications and her sister’s upkeep.

And then came the darkest night of them all: her mother passed away.

The pain was unbearable. Her pillar was gone. Her father still absent. Dora was now truly alone in the world, with only her inner strength and the responsibility of her junior sister to keep her going.

But instead of crumbling, she stood tall.

She worked every job she could find—cleaning, selling, assisting. And slowly, painfully, but surely, she began to rebuild. And today, at just 26 years old, Dora Opare is the CEO of her own fashion brand—a brand born from her passion, crafted from her pain, and powered by her persistence.

Her modelling dreams? She’s pursuing them. Not for fame, but to fulfill the dream of the little girl who once went to school on an empty stomach and studied by candlelight while the world slept.

Dora’s journey is more than inspiring—it’s transformational. She is a reminder that success is not always about who you know, or where you come from, but how deeply you believe in your worth when the world gives you every reason not to.

To every young girl struggling to find her place in this world, Dora says:

“You can start with nothing and become everything. You just have to keep going.”

And she did. And she still is.

Don’t panic, cedi stability will continue

0

The Bank of Ghana says it will intensify key reforms to consolidate recent gains made by the cedi which has appreciated by nearly 19 percent year-to-date.

The rally of the local currency has been largely driven by coordinated fiscal discipline and tight monetary policy measures.

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiamah believes the next phase of reforms will focus on sustaining foreign exchange inflows and tightening regulatory oversight in the forex market.

He was speaking at the opening of the Bank’s 124th Monetary Policy Committee meeting on Wednesday at the Bank Square.

“Importantly, the cedi has appreciated sharply by nearly 19 percent between April and May, helping to ease imported inflation pressures and restore public confidence. The appreciation reflects a combination of factors, including prudent monetary policy, improved market sentiment and external sector gains, he said.

But the Governor quickly added that underlying economic challenges persist despite the improving outlook.

“However, significant challenges persist. The inflation outlook, while improving, remains vulnerable to second-round effects, food supply constraints, especially from northern Ghana and the Sahel and external price shocks, particularly given volatile global commodity markets.”

“Geopolitical tensions and evolving global trade dynamics, including the recent US-led tariff disputes, have heightened market uncertainty and could affect commodity prices, exchange rates, and financial flows in emerging markets like ours”, he added.

The MPC is being held at a time of sustained cedi strength against the US dollar and ongoing efforts to rein in inflation.

At its last meeting in March, the Committee raised the policy rate by 100 basis points to 28%, a move the Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama said was necessary to anchor inflation expectations.

But with signs of currency stability and easing global pressures, the market is tilting towards a policy rate retention to guide lending rates and overall economic recovery.

The meeting will end this Friday, May 23, 2025 with a press briefing, to announce the new policy stance.

Bawumia should apologize, not congratulate himself — Ayariga

In a fiery statement on GHOne monitored by MyNewsGh, Ayariga claimed that Bawumia owes Ghanaians an apology for his failure and should instead be congratulating economic actors like the current Finance Minister Ato Forson has done.

Lands Commission outlines measures to decentralise operations at district level

0

The Management of the Lands Commission has held a strategic discussion aimed at enhancing its operational efficiency across the country.

The key highlight of the deliberations was the proposed decentralisation of the Commission’s operations through the establishment of district-level offices.

The decentralisation agenda, which has been tasked by Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, is aimed at ensuring greater productivity and efficiency in Ghana’s land administration system by establishing Lands Commission offices in various districts across the country.

The management of the Commission expressed its full commitment to actualising the Minister’s directive and emphasised the need for strategic collaboration among regional offices to ensure its successful implementation.

The meeting was also used to officially welcome the Commission’s new Deputy Executive Secretary in Charge of Operations, Anthony Mallen Ntiador, to the staff.

In his remarks, Mr. Ntiador expressed his gratitude for the warm reception accorded him and re-affirmed his commitment to supporting the Commission’s strategic vision.

He emphasised the importance of collaboration and innovation in driving progress, particularly in streamlining land service operations across the country.

The Lands Commission is confident that Mr. Ntiador’s extensive experience and fresh perspectives would significantly contribute to the ongoing transformation of land administration in Ghana.

Ghana cedi appreciates to GHS 11.90 per dollar, showing signs of stability on currency market

0

In a welcome development for Ghana’s economy, the Ghanaian cedi has appreciated significantly against the U.S. dollar, trading at GHS 11.90 per $1 as of May 21, 2025. According to Google Finance and Morningstar data, this marks a sharp recovery from previous highs nearing GHS 15 earlier in the month.

The 1-month currency chart (see image below) shows a consistent downward trend in the USD/GHS rate — a clear indication of the cedi’s rebound on the forex market.

The recent improvement is being attributed to government intervention, increased foreign exchange reserves, and positive investor sentiment following recent macroeconomic policy updates under the current NDC administration led by President John Dramani Mahama.

“We’re beginning to see results from the efforts put in place by the Bank of Ghana and the Ministry of Finance,” an economist at the University of Ghana told Asaaseradio.

The appreciation comes at a time when inflationary pressures are beginning to ease, and Ghana is seeing improved export earnings from cocoa, gold, and oil.

Key Drivers of the Cedi’s Strength:

•Improved forex inflows from international development partners and exports.

•Tighter monetary policy by the Bank of Ghana.

•Restructured debt talks under the IMF program showing positive signs.

•Stronger consumer and investor confidence since the beginning of Q2 2025.

Market Reaction:

Financial analysts advise cautious optimism, as global market uncertainties and oil price fluctuations still pose risks.

“This isn’t a time to celebrate just yet, but it’s a positive signal for businesses and households alike,” noted a currency trader in Accra.

What’s Next?

If current policies remain consistent, the cedi may continue its gradual recovery. However, economic watchers remain focused on:

•Inflation trends

•Import demand

•External debt servicing pressure

•Performance of Ghana’s key export sectors

Three Hospitals Rejected Dada KD – Aide

Dada KD

King Pee, an aide to late highlife legend, Dada KD, has disclosed the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding the musician’s death.

In a revealing interview on Joy Prime TV, King Pee recounted how the artist was rushed to three different hospitals, only to find no doctors available to attend to him.

Dada KD, known for his timeless contributions to Ghanaian highlife music, died on May 16, 2025, sending shockwaves across the country and music industry.

King Pee shared that in the critical moments leading up to the singer’s death, precious time was lost as they moved from one medical facility to another, desperately seeking care.

“Dada KD was rushed to three different hospitals, yet no doctors were available,” King Pee said.

When pressed to name the hospitals involved, King Pee declined, citing personal reasons. “I do not want to mention the names of the hospitals, I’m sorry,” he said.

According to him, it was only after being denied care at the first three facilities that they were able to secure help at a private hospital in Gbawe, a suburb of Accra. By then, however, it was too late.

“These hospitals had no doctors, and that’s how we ended up at a private hospital in Gbawe,” he added.

Dada KD was widely celebrated for his unique voice and soulful melodies that helped define modern Ghanaian highlife. He leaves behind a rich musical legacy and a fanbase mourning the untimely loss of a cultural icon.

Mr. Baiden, a digital identity champion, in a preview of his presentation, described the Ghana Card not merely as a form of identification, but as a revolutionary enabler of national development—particularly in the health sector.

“The Ghana Card is not just a piece of identification—it’s a game-changer for healthcare delivery,” said Mr. Baiden. “This is about putting identity at the centre of development, ensuring every citizen has access to essential services with dignity and efficiency.”

Mr. Baiden’s keynote address will delve into how the Ghana Card has been integrated into the national healthcare infrastructure, streamlining patient verification, eliminating fraud, and enhancing service delivery through real-time data interoperability.

A Platform for pan-African identity innovation

The ID4Africa AGM is the continent’s leading identity event, drawing more than 2,000 stakeholders from over 100 countries, including representatives from 50+ African governments.

It serves as a melting pot for technology innovators, policymakers, civil society actors, and development agencies, all committed to building trusted digital identity ecosystems.

Themed “Digital Identity at Scale: Building Trust, Maximizing Impact,” the gathering aims to accelerate Africa’s digital transformation by promoting citizen-centric solutions that enhance governance, security, and service delivery.

Margins ID Group, under Mr. Baiden’s leadership, has been instrumental in the design, production, and rollout of the Ghana Card and its ecosystem.

His appearance at ID4Africa reinforces the country’s growing influence in the global conversation on digital identity as a development tool.

Growing continental interest in legal identity systems

Across Africa, governments and development partners are increasingly recognising the value of trusted digital ID systems for unlocking socio-economic benefits.

Health, financial services, and mobility remain key sectors driving demand for secure, interoperable identity frameworks.

The ID4Africa AGM will showcase successful implementations, foster policy dialogue, and offer unmatched networking opportunities.

With a swelling interest in health-focused identity use cases, Ghana’s example—anchored by the Ghana Card—is expected to resonate powerfully.
