Seek restructuring support at first sign of distress – GIPC CEO urges businesses

0

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), Simon Madjie, has urged Ghanaian businesses to seek restructuring and insolvency services in times of temporary financial difficulty to avert liquidation.

“I want to strongly urge SMEs, state-owned enterprises and even large corporations to seek restructuring support at the first sign of distress and not when their businesses are already on the brink of insolvency,” he advised.

He noted that: “The resilience of our nation’s business environment is not determined by the number of companies that never fail, but how many are able to rise again after facing adversity”.

Speaking at the Annual Public Lecture of the Chartered Institute of Restructuring and Insolvency Practitioners (CIRIP) held in Accra, Madjie cautioned Ghanaian SMEs from making over ambitious expansion plans that are not backed by sufficient financial resources, saying this more often than not leads to liquidity problems.

“Businesses may grow faster than they can sustainably finance. This results in mis-payments to suppliers and creditors,” he stated.

The lecture, themed ‘Unlocking Business Resilience: How CIRA Empowers Companies to Recover from Distress and Thrive’, aimed to build the capacity of insolvency practitioners, the judiciary and financial players to utilise the Corporate Insolvency and Restructuring Act, 2020 (Act 1015).

“The Corporate Insolvency and Restructuring Act, 2020 (Act 1015) is a legal lifeline that offers hope to struggling and viable businesses that would otherwise collapse under the weight of temporary financial difficulty,” he said, highlighting its enactment as an important milestone in Ghana’s quest to create a resilient, supportive and forward-looking business environment.

PWC’s 2021 Report, titled ‘Why Businesses Fail’, identified weak corporate governance as the major cause of business failure in Ghana.

It also revealed that poor oversight, lack of ethical leadership and flawed decision-making weaken stakeholder confidence and expose companies to reputational, market and regulatory risks.

“Many corporate failures can be traced to weak governance, poor board oversight, inadequate controls and unethical practices among parties,” Madjie noted while encouraging businesses to promote the principles of accountability, transparency and stakeholder engagement, which are important principles of good governance.

“Many businesses with strong potential have struggled to see the light of day due to inadequate governance structures,” he decried.

President of Chartered Institute of Restructuring and Insolvency Practitioners, Felix Addo, charged shareholders to appoint competent people to the company’s board of directors, saying, “their choices affect the company directly”.

“Shareholders should make sure the people they appoint to their board of directors are competent and possess the necessary skills. They should understand the duties of a company director and be willing to carry out those duties properly and be accountable at the Annual General Meeting,” he advised.

“Inadequate crisis management is another critical issue. External factors such as strong competition, exchange rate volatility, regulatory interventions and global disruptions can push even best-run businesses into crisis,” he noted.

According to the 2023 PwC Global Crisis Survey, 96% of executives have encountered crisis in the past two years – yet only eight had the foundational elements in place to support resilience.

“Many companies adopt a reactive stance rather than preparing for potential disruptions. Lack of preparedness can turn manageable challenges into severe setbacks,” he noted.

The Corporate Insolvency and Restructuring Act (CIRA) 2020, brings a transformative twist to how corporate issues are addressed in Ghana.

“It was enacted to provide a modern and efficient insolvency and restructuring regime that shifts the focus from liquidation to business rescue,” he said.

“The Act recognises that failure does not have to be final and fatal. Instead, it offers a structured pathway for companies to reorganise, secure temporary protection from creditors and return to viability,” he noted.

Under the law, when a company enters into administration it is granted a moratorium – a temporary legal force that protects it from creditor actions – allowing some time for a qualified Insolvency Practitioner (IP) to conduct a thorough evaluation of the company’s operations, organise financial obligations and make recommendations for the business’s turnaround.

“This makes it easier for distressed companies to access the capital they need to recover and continue operations,” he said.

To serve the multinational companies in Ghana, CIRA incorporates provisions that allow for cooperation between Ghanaian courts and foreign jurisdictions in cross-border insolvency proceedings.

This ensures legal sensitivity for trade and investment and provides a fair and efficient process for managing cross-border insolvencies.

“In anticipation of increased cross-border commercial activity under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, there is need for a continent-wide protocol on insolvency that is tailored to the reality of African businesses,” he said.

It should offer a harmonised framework that facilitates cooperation among member states in handling insolvency cases.

Four years after its enactment, only three companies have entered administration compared to over 400 liquidations, according to the Office of the Registrar of Companies, signalling less usage of the Act.

New Footage of Socialite Looking Lean and Unkempt Emerges, Ghanaians Express Concern

A fresh wave of concern has swept across social media following the emergence of a video showing popular Ghanaian socialite and philanthropist, Ayisha Modi, appearing visibly lean and unkempt. The footage, which surfaced on various platforms over the weekend, has left many Ghanaians alarmed about her health and overall well-being.

In the video, Ayisha Modi, popularly known as She Loves Stonebwoy, was seen in what appeared to be a frail state — a stark contrast to the bubbly and vibrant image she has always portrayed online. Her drastic physical transformation has sparked widespread speculation, with some netizens expressing fears over potential health issues or emotional distress.

Many have taken to X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and Facebook to express their sympathy and call for those close to her to check on her. Others urged Ghanaians to refrain from harsh judgments and instead show support during what could be a difficult time in her life.

“I hope someone close to Ayisha Modi reaches out to her. That video is heartbreaking,” one user commented.

“We joke too much in this country. Someone is clearly not okay, and people are laughing. Let’s do better,” another added.

Ayisha Modi has not officially responded to the trending video as of the time of this report. Known for her outspokenness, generosity, and fierce loyalty to Ghanaian music icon Stonebwoy, she has also been involved in numerous philanthropic efforts, supporting orphans and vulnerable communities both in Ghana and abroad.

This is not the first time the socialite has drawn attention over her physical appearance. In the past, Ayisha has undergone significant weight loss, which she attributed to lifestyle changes and personal health decisions. However, this recent appearance has triggered renewed concern, especially as she has been relatively quiet on social media in recent weeks.

While the full story behind her current state remains unclear, fans and observers are hopeful that she will soon speak out and clarify the situation. In the meantime, many continue to send prayers and well wishes her way.

We will continue to follow this developing story and provide updates as more information becomes available.

Kennedy Agyapong In Trouble Over Wontumi Arrest As Abronye Reveals A Deep Secret

0

Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong is at the center of a political storm within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following allegations that his campaign team was involved in the arrest of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi. The controversy, sparked by Wontumi’s detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on May 27, 2025, has deepened internal party rifts, with NPP Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, alias Abronye DC, accusing Agyapong’s camp of orchestrating a betrayal to undermine party unity.

Abronye DC, in a fiery interview on Wontumi Radio, claimed that Alex Kwaku Tetteh, a member of Agyapong’s campaign team and president of Citizen Eye Ghana (CITEG), provided Wontumi’s location to security agencies, leading to his arrest. Tetteh admitted on Neat FM on May 30, 2025, that he submitted a petition to EOCO, the Office of the Special Prosecutor, and the Office of the President, citing public concerns over Wontumi’s alleged involvement in illegal mining and a GH¢51 million Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) payment scandal. “I did my part as a citizen to ensure accountability,” Tetteh said, denying Agyapong’s involvement and emphasizing CITEG’s neutrality.

Agyapong, however, has distanced himself from Tetteh’s actions, expressing frustration in a video statement on May 28, 2025. “I don’t support what he did, and I’m very upset with him,” Agyapong said, urging NPP members to unite rather than rejoice over Wontumi’s woes. He also offered to stand as a surety for Wontumi’s GH¢50 million bail, a move confirmed by NPP Tema West Chairman Kwesi Opoku, despite their past tensions during the 2023 NPP flagbearer primaries.

Abronye DC escalated the rhetoric, accusing Agyapong’s camp of being “traitors” within the NPP, vowing to expose their activities ahead of the 2028 elections. “We will post their videos, show where they live, and eliminate them from the party,” he declared, alleging that Agyapong’s team has a history of undermining party loyalty. He referenced a 2020 national security report warning of internal sabotage that contributed to the NPP’s electoral challenges, claiming similar tactics are resurfacing. Abronye also pointed to Agyapong’s alleged accumulation of wealth, including “$12 million in cash” and “five houses,” as evidence of questionable dealings, though he provided no concrete proof.

The allegations against Wontumi include illegal mining by his company, Akonta Mining, in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, polluting water bodies, and receiving an improper GH¢51 million COCOBOD payment in January 2025, despite a directive from then-Chief of Staff Julius Debrah to suspend such transactions. Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed his client’s hospitalization during EOCO interrogation, fueling speculation of a tactic to delay proceedings.

Smart and Classy Ways to Style Organza Blouse with Ankara Skirt

0

The fusion of an organza blouse with an Ankara skirt is a brilliant way to combine elegance with cultural vibrance. This fashion pairing has gained popularity among women who want to look both modern and traditional, making a statement that is refined, stylish, and uniquely African. Organza, a lightweight, sheer fabric, adds a touch of sophistication, while Ankara brings bold patterns and rich colors that command attention.

One smart way to style an organza blouse with an Ankara skirt is by opting for a high-waisted pencil or A-line Ankara skirt. This combination flatters most body types and creates a balanced silhouette. A puff-sleeve organza blouse or one with ruffle details can elevate the overall look, making it suitable for events like weddings, dinner parties, or even church services.

For a more contemporary vibe, pair a fitted, transparent organza blouse layered over a camisole with a flared Ankara midi skirt. This contrast of textures—soft and structured—adds depth and interest to the outfit. Accessorize with bold earrings, a clutch purse, and heels for a polished appearance.

Another classy option is to wear a monochrome or pastel-colored organza blouse with a multicolored Ankara skirt. The simplicity of the blouse tones down the vibrancy of the skirt, creating a chic, well-coordinated look. Belted styles can also help define the waist and add a touch of glamor.

Whether you’re dressing for a formal event or looking to stand out at a social gathering, combining an organza blouse with an Ankara skirt is a fashionable and classy choice. With the right styling, it reflects grace, confidence, and cultural pride.

Fiscal Council Proposal: Don’t multiply institutions, multiply effectiveness

0

Legal practitioner and governance commentator, Prof. Stephen Kwaku Asare, has dismissed proposals for the establishment of an Independent Fiscal Council, arguing that its mandate can be effectively absorbed by the Auditor-General with minimal investment in capacity.

His comments come at a time when Ghana is under pressure to implement fiscal reforms as part of ongoing economic recovery efforts, with the proposed council featuring prominently in discussions around ensuring long-term fiscal discipline.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, June 1, the US-based professor of accounting — popularly known as Kwaku Azar — described the idea as a duplication of roles and a costly, bureaucratic distraction from meaningful reform.

“With modest investment in analytical and forecasting capacity, the Auditor-General could fully absorb the functions of the Fiscal Council, legally, operationally, and independently,” he wrote.

According to him, the push for new oversight bodies like the Fiscal Council reflects a persistent governance flaw in Ghana’s policymaking — the tendency to multiply institutions rather than strengthen existing ones.

We Don’t Need More Bureaucracy’

Prof. Asare argued that creating new bodies often duplicates existing mandates, blurs accountability lines, and adds unnecessary costs in the form of salaries, logistics, and office infrastructure.

“We have a penchant for creating new institutions for old problems,” he noted. “This approach duplicates existing mandates, muddies responsibility and accountability, and risks becoming tools of patronage masked as technocratic solutions.”

He pointed out that the proposed council’s duties already overlap with the roles of the Auditor-General (compliance and transparency), the Ministry of Finance (forecasting and policy design), and parliamentary committees (oversight and scrutiny).

Rather than enhance coordination and fiscal discipline, he warned, the establishment of a new council could delay decision-making and inflate governance costs without delivering meaningful results.

‘Empower What Already Exists’

Kwaku Azar proposed a more efficient alternative: building the analytical and forecasting capacity of current institutions, especially the Auditor-General and the Budget Office.

“We must resist the impulse to solve every reform challenge by creating a new committee,” he cautioned. “Creating new structures while neglecting existing ones reflects a misplaced confidence in form over function.”

He maintained that while the idea of an Independent Fiscal Council may be well-intentioned, it is ultimately redundant and should be shelved in favour of strengthening existing fiscal oversight bodies.

Gov’t declares Friday, June 6 as public holiday

0

Government, through the Ministry of Interior, has declared Friday, June 6, 2025, as a public holiday to mark the Eid ul-Adha celebration.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Minister for Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak.

This significant Muslim celebration honours the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael in obedience to God’s command.

In remembrance of this event, Muslims perform the ritual sacrifice of animals, such as lambs. The meat from the sacrificed animals is then shared among family, friends, and the needy.

Eid ul-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, marks the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

The minister urged the public to observe the holidays accordingly and comply with the declaration made by the president through an Executive Instrument (E.I.).

The declaration ensures that citizens, especially the Muslim community, can fully participate in Eid-ul-Adha celebrations nationwide.

Parliament recommends ratification of WTO agreement on fisheries subsidies

0

The Committee on Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs and the Committee on Trade, Industry, and Tourism of Parliament have recommended that Ghana ratify the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies.

This move, according to the Committees, aims to promote sustainable marine resource management and curb harmful fisheries subsidies that contribute to overcapacity, overfishing, and Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Moving the report of the Committees on the floor of Parliament for the adoption of the House on Friday, Dr Godfred Seidu Jasaw, Chairman of the Committee on Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs, said the Committee considered the Agreement a significant step in global efforts to curb harmful fisheries subsidies that contributed to overcapacity, overfishing, and IUU fishing, promoting sustainable marine resource management.

“Mr Speaker, the ratification would also highlight Ghana’s commitment to global cooperation, aligning with its roles as host of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and as a founding member of the African Union (AU),” he said.

Dr Jasaw, noted that the implications of the ratification included enhancing measures against IUU fishing and other unsustainable fishing practices; improving data collection and reporting on fisheries indicators; increase transparency among WTO members and supporting global efforts to sustainably manage fisheries resources.

The others he noted were the benefit from fair trade practices in both domestic and international markets; contributing to job creation, poverty alleviation, national food security, and good foreign exchange earnings

Among the challenges and concerns the Committee’s report enumerated were potential impact on local fishing communities, particularly small-scale and artisanal fishers who relied on government support such as subsidies on premix fuel, outboard motors, and fishing gear.

“There is the need for careful consideration of domestic implications and mitigating measures to protect vulnerable fishing communities,” the report said.

The Committee recommended that the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture finalised a new Fisheries Bill, which will incorporate the provisions of the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies.

“The Committee will closely monitor the drafting and passage of the new legislation to ensure it reflects Ghana’s international commitments and socio-economic realities of fishing communities,” the report said.

Some Members of Parliament (MPs) who contributed to the debate on the adoption of the Committee’s report called for sustainable practices with an emphasis on environmentally friendly practices, reduction of plastic waste, and promotion of local materials for fishing gear.

Mr Habib Iddrisu, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Tolon, seconding the Motion raised concerns about potential effects on fishermen’s livelihoods, with plans to mitigate adverse effects.

Mr Murtala Mohammed, a National Democratic Congress MP for Tamale Central, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, called for investing in infrastructure and equipment to support fishing communities as well as the improvement of working conditions and resources available to officials in these areas.

Madam Emelia Arthur, the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, said the WTO agreement prohibited subsidies to vessels engaged in IUU fishing, relevant to Ghana’s current “yellow card” status from the European Union.

She told Parliament that the expected outcomes of the ratification would include improved sustainability, efficiency, transparency, and cooperation among WTO members, potentially boosting Ghana’s fishing industry.

“Mr Speaker, potential outcomes will improved Industry Sustainability that will enhance measures against IUU fishing and unsustainable practices economic benefits where fair trade practices and sustainable fishing may lead to economic gains and increased Transparency for better data collection and reporting among WTO members,” she said.

Pan-African Progressive Front takes off with conference to rally Africans

0

Veteran Ghanaian journalist and Pan-Africanist Kwesi Pratt Jr Veteran Ghanaian journalist and Pan-Africanist Kwesi Pratt Jr

The Pan-African Progressive Front (PPF) has taken a major step toward uniting Africa in the fight for its rights, following a joint conference with the Socialist Movement of Ghana and Pan Africanism Today.

The May 29, 2025 webinar was organised to plan the 80th anniversary of the Fifth Pan-African Congress, held in Manchester, England, in 1945.

It was attended by more than 60 progressive Pan-Africanists from 32 countries, including representatives from the diasporas in the USA and Brazil.

Among the Pan-Africanist organisations represented were:

The African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), represented by Imani Na Umoja.

The Pan-African Movement for Reparations, Justice and Restoration of Historical Memory, led by Ouzayrou Mamane

The MORFEPAN women’s organisation from Niger, represented by Amina Hamani

The CODESA organisation, represented by Saddam Alktif

Delivering one of the keynote speeches, veteran Ghanaian journalist and Pan-Africanist Kwesi Pratt Jr re-echoed the sentiments of Ghana’s former president and foremost Pan-Africanist, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who once declared: “We need to build Africa without bombs.”

Mr Pratt expressed concern over the presence of NATO military forces in parts of Africa, warning that such interventions threaten the continent’s security and sovereignty. He made specific reference to the Alliance of Sahel States, comprising Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso.

He also questioned the current distribution of political power on the continent—who truly holds it, whether it serves the interests of African peoples, and how progressive political forces can attain this power to transform Africa’s future.

The 80th anniversary celebrations are scheduled to take place in Accra, Ghana, in October 2025, with numerous Pan-Africanist campaigners expected to attend.

In light of this, Mr Pratt—known for a lifetime of advocacy and resistance against the marginalisation of minority groups—proposed the formation of a planning committee for the event.

He emphasized the need to revisit the resolutions of the 1945 Congress, to assess which goals have been achieved, which remain unmet, and what steps are needed to realise the original vision.

Albie Walls, representing the All-African People’s Revolutionary Party, moderated the conference and underscored the historic importance of the Manchester Pan-African Congress.

He noted that the Congress not only set the tone for anti-imperialist and decolonisation efforts but also stood out for its scale, organisation, and ideological integrity.

Mr Walls called for clear, actionable steps to be developed for the unification of progressive Africa, in keeping with the dream of the Congress founders.

Roland Diagne, a Pan-African campaigner from Senegal’s FERNET organisation, highlighted the continued relevance of neocolonialism, especially in the Sahel region.

He expressed hope that the new Ghanaian government would help return ECOWAS to its original purpose—promoting peace, democracy, and sovereignty.

His views echoed growing concerns that, since the early 2010s, there has been a resurgence of African patriotism and a desire for genuine sovereignty. These shifts reflect a deeper understanding of the long-term damage caused by neocolonialism.

Mr Ouzayrou Mamane stressed that the fight for reparations is a direct continuation of the Manchester Congress’s agenda.

“This struggle is the key project on the path to full economic independence for Africa,” he said.

“Reparations are a historical necessity—an opportunity to restore the lost dignity of our peoples and to compensate for the enormous damage caused by centuries of slavery, colonialism, and imperialist Western policies.”

There is a growing call for African unity in resisting external military interventions, particularly by NATO and Western powers.

Special concern was raised about the current role of ECOWAS, which many believe has deviated from its foundational principles.

This explains why the 18 speakers during the open forum praised the Pan-African Progressive Front (PPF) for its bold leadership in uniting Africans around shared goals—including the fight for reparations from former colonial powers for the historic injustices committed against the continent.

“See Former IGP Dampare’s New Life After He Was Sacked by President Mahama”

0

When the announcement came on March 13, 2025, that President John Dramani Mahama had relieved Dr. George Akuffo Dampare of his duties as Inspector-General of Police, it marked the end of a tenure defined as much by transformation as by controversy.

For many, the decision closed a significant chapter in Ghana’s security landscape. But for Dr. Dampare, it signaled something different entirely—the beginning of a quieter, yet no less consequential, phase of life.

In the weeks following his departure, the former IGP has largely refrained from direct commentary on the circumstances surrounding his exit.

Those close to him describe a man at peace, focused not on past events but on future contributions.

Though his time at the helm of the Ghana Police Service stirred debate—earning both praise for modernization efforts and criticism for leadership style—there is broad agreement that his presence left an imprint on the institution.

Public appearances since his removal have been sparse but telling.

At a recent interfaith gathering in Accra, Dr. Dampare, speaking in measured tones, thanked the public for their support over the years and reiterated his belief in integrity, accountability, and service to country.

His remarks, devoid of bitterness, suggested a man more interested in nation-building than in nursing grievances.

While no formal announcements have been made regarding his next steps, credible sources suggest that Dr. Dampare is weighing opportunities in educational leadership and civic engagement.

His earlier roles as an academic and mentor appear to be shaping his post-policing ambitions.

There is also speculation about his involvement in national policy dialogue, particularly on youth empowerment and institutional reform.

Though no longer commanding the Ghana Police Service, Dr. Dampare remains a figure of considerable public interest.

His rise from a 20-year-old recruit to the youngest Inspector-General in the Fourth Republic is still viewed by many as emblematic of meritocratic possibility.

As he navigates life beyond the badge, his path will likely continue to intersect with the broader national conversation.

In this new season, Dr. Dampare may be trading sirens for seminars, but his commitment to public life—subtler now, perhaps—shows no sign of fading.

A lot of us are successful because we had praying mothers

Lady Reverend Adelaide Heward-Mills Lady Reverend Adelaide Heward-Mills

The first lady of the United Denomination originating from the Lighthouse Group of Churches, Lady Reverend Adelaide Heward-Mills, has shared how praying mothers are responsible for the success of many individuals.

Speaking at the Woman Redefined Conference 2025 in Accra, Heward-Mills addressed the challenges women face due to social media’s portrayal of idealized lifestyles.

She noted that such pressures can lead women to feel inadequate if they don’t conform to certain standards. However, she reminded attendees of their worth.

“Now with social media, there’s so much pressure, especially on women, to be this and that. You feel that you are not a slay queen, but you are a queen. You were a queen before you came.

“God has a purpose for your life. And that purpose doesn’t just fall from the scene. It must be birthed in the realm of the spirit,” she said.

She added that the previous generation is responsible for most of the successes many people have and thus, should be recognised.

“Many of us are successful because we had praying mothers. These women would rise every morning, lifting their voices to God, laying the spiritual groundwork for our lives even before we became aware of ourselves,” she stated.

Heward-Mills encouraged women to focus on their God-given purpose and to find strength in the spiritual heritage passed down to them.

The event, organized by the Women’s Rights Centre (WRC), was a dynamic gathering aimed at celebrating and empowering women, particularly within the creative arts and entrepreneurial sectors. Held under the theme “Women’s Empowerment through Creativity and Enterprise,” it brought together diverse participants including female creatives, businesswomen, and stakeholders.

Activities included panel discussions, exhibitions, performances, and networking sessions that highlighted the achievements of women while addressing challenges they face in business and the arts.

The event fostered collaboration, knowledge sharing, and inspiration, reaffirming WRC’s commitment to supporting women’s economic independence and creative expression.

NACOC arrests alleged drug kingpin at Kuntunse gym

0

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested Geoffrey Agbi, the suspected leader of an illicit drug operation at a gym located within the Kuntunse Spirit Filling Station near Amasaman.

According to a NACOC press update issued on Saturday, May 31, 2025, Agbi was arrested on Friday, May 30, at around 6:20 p.m. in his inner office at the gym, following a successful surveillance and tracking operation by a special team from the Commission.

“Several substances suspected to be illicit drugs were found and retrieved from his office,” the statement said.

Agbi is currently in detention and assisting with ongoing investigations.

Background

The arrest follows an earlier NACOC raid on April 14, 2025, around 10:00 p.m., when officers stormed four chain businesses — a pub, boutique, salon, and gym — situated on the premises of the Spirit Filling Station. During that operation, five suspects were arrested, including Elvis Owusu Yeboah and Joseph Godsway, both gym instructors at Korea Gym, which operates within the Amasaman Municipality. Godsway is a Nigerian national.

Geoffrey Agbi, believed to be the owner of the gym and the alleged kingpin of the illicit drug network, had absconded at the time and was subsequently placed on NACOC’s wanted list.

Further surveillance revealed that Agbi had resumed activities at the gym and had recruited new personnel to continue the suspected drug operations. His eventual arrest marks a significant step in dismantling what authorities describe as an entrenched local drug network.

Investigations are ongoing, and NACOC says it will continue efforts to identify and apprehend all individuals linked to the operation.

Good News As New Cement Prices To Be Released On June 28

Many Ghanaians were hoping that cement prices would go down in May 2025, especially since the Ghana Cedi has been getting stronger. But that didn’t happen. Cement is still expensive, and people in the building and construction sector are not happy.

In a post sighted by Citinews, In a recent development, 13 out of 15 cement companies in Ghana have submitted their May factory prices to the Cement Manufacturing Development Committee (CMDC). This is part of a rule by the Ghana Standards Authority to make pricing more transparent and fair.

Well-known companies like GHACEM, Dangote, CIMAF, Diamond Cement, and others sent in their prices. Only two companies failed to do so and might be punished by the authorities.

According to the data submitted, 32.5R cement is selling between GH¢93.89 and GH¢105, while the 42.5R cement ranges from GH¢105 to GH¢127. On average, customers are paying around GH¢97.70 and GH¢109.40 for these two types.

Many people expected the prices to fall because of the improved Cedi. But the reality is that the cost of making cement, transporting it, and other challenges in the market are still high.

These hidden costs are keeping prices up, even though the local currency is doing better.

Professor Alex Dodoo, head of the CMDC, says the next price list will be released on June 28, 2025. It will be made available to everyone through the GSA website, newspapers, and the companies’ own sites.

As Ghana continues to build roads, houses, and offices, cement remains very important. Ghanaians are now watching closely to see if prices will ever come down, or if high costs have become the new normal.

Appiagyei-Atua: Protest by Minority over Wontumi’s arrest unnecessary and theatrical

0

A law lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua, has criticised the Minority in Parliament for what he described as an overly dramatic protest against the continued detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The protest followed Wontumi’s arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday, May 27.

Chairman Wontumi was initially detained by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the police before EOCO also held him over other allegations.

Although he was granted bail in the sum of GH¢50 million on Wednesday, May 28, with conditions including two verified sureties, his release has been delayed due to a pending High Court application seeking to review the bail terms. Despite meeting the bail conditions by May 30, the legal process has yet to conclude.

On Thursday, May 29, Minority MPs staged a walkout from Parliament. They later marched to the EOCO headquarters, where they staged a sit-down protest demanding Wontumi’s immediate release on self-recognisance bail, citing his public profile and low flight risk.

However, Professor Appiagyei-Atua, speaking on Channel One TV on Saturday, May 31, dismissed the protest as unnecessary and politically motivated.

“One would have expected that the NPP team would have followed the due process, and that is why I fault the steps they took—leaving Parliament to go and sit down on the floor at EOCO,” he said.

“I think it was needless, just to create some drama and attention, which in the end could have led to lawlessness. Indeed, some lawlessness occurred, considering that a journalist was assaulted. The whole thing was overdramatised,” he added.

He also expressed disappointment that some of the protesting MPs, many of who are lawyers, appeared to have ignored legal protocols in favour of public theatrics.

“Some of these MPs are lawyers, they know the rules, and I don’t know why this time they decided to choose this route, which creates the perception that they want to politicise the situation,” he remarked.

Rio Ferdinand Names His 2025 Ballon d’Or Winner

0

Rio Ferdinand seems to be pretty invested in the Ballon d’Or. He never won the prize himself, but as a pundit, he loves to offer his thoughts on the matter.

He reached the pinnacle of the game with Manchester United, winning six Premier League titles and the Champions League during his time at Old Trafford. In retirement, he’s become a familiar voice as a commentator in many high-profile games.

During the 2023/24 Champions League final, he went viral as he repeatedly chanted “Ballon d’Or” as Vinicius Junior scored in Real Madrid’s 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund. Many fans found the moment rather grating, but at the very least, Ferdinand was showing just how invested he is in the race for football’s biggest individual prize.

Speaking to One Football ahead of this years’ Champions League final, he has now predicted the 2025 Ballon d’Or winner.

Rio Ferdinand Backs Ousmane Dembele For 2025 Ballon d’Or

Believes PSG must win the Champions League first

Inter Milan will meet Paris Saint-Germain in the 2024/25 Champions League final, and it’s hard to be sure who will be the winner, with no clear favourite. Interestingly enough, the same can be said of the Ballon d’Or race for this season.

Barcelona stars Raphinha and Lamine Yamal are currently frontrunners, while Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has also been touted by some. From the two finalists, Ousmane Dembele and Lautaro Martinez are the strongest contenders.

With that in mind, Ferdinand has picked French winger Dembele as his favourite to win the award. However, he feels it will only be a sure thing if the PSG ace can play a key role in guiding his team to Champions League glory first. He explained:

“Who is going to win the Ballon d’Or? I’m gonna go… If Dembele affects the final, Dembele wins.”

Champions League Winner Hasn’t Always Won Ballon d’Or

Rodri won it in 2024 after Premier League and Euros success

Manchester City defensive midfielder Rodri celebrating with the Ballon d'Or

As alluded to before, Ferdinand has been known to put too much weight on the Champions League before. Last year, he felt that Vini Jr was a shoo-in for the prize after his final-winning display.

He famously said: “Ballon d’Or. Ballon d’Or. Ballon d’Or. Ballon d’Or. Ballon d’Or. Ballon d’Or. Vinicius has just taken the Ballon d’Or.”

That proved to be wrong with Rodri claiming the 2024 Ballon d’Or off the back of a season which saw him lift the Premier League with Manchester City, and Euro 2024 with Spain.

This time around, there is no international summer tournament, meaning players will be judged almost entirely on their performance at club level. With that in mind, the winner of the Champions League will certainly give their hopes a major boost.

That said, Lionel Messi managed five of his eight Ballon d’Or wins without lifting the Champions League (in 2023, 2021, 2019, 2012, 2010). Cristiano Ronaldo also picked up one of his gongs in 2013, having not won the tournament. What’s more, between 2006 and 2003, Fabio Cannavaro, Ronaldinho, Andriy Shevchenko, and Pavel Nedved all failed to win the Champions League but still went home with the prize.

It will certainly be interesting to see how things play out in 2025.

Hearts of Oak coach Aboubakar Ouattara names a 20-man squad for MD 33 clash against Legon Cities

0

Hearts of Oak head coach Aboubakar Ouattara has named a 20-man squad for Sunday’s vital Ghana Premier League fixture against Legon Cities at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

The Phobians currently sit fifth on the league table with 52 points, having scored 29 goals and conceded just 18—the second-best defensive record in the league. With only one win in their last five outings, a victory on Sunday is crucial as they aim to break into the top four before the season concludes.

In goal, Kwesi Nketiah gets the nod to start between the posts, stepping in for regular goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, who is currently on international duty with the Black Stars in London. Sharif Shuaib has also been included as the second goalkeeper.

Coach Ouattara has bolstered his defence with the return of experienced centre-back Konadu Yiadom, who joins the likes of Michael Ampadu, Mohammed Sherif, Emmanuel Amankwah, and young talent Raphael Amponsah.

Also named in the defensive unit are Ransford Mensah, David Oppong Afrane, and Osei Kelvin Asibey. The midfield options feature a balance of creativity and steel.

Theophilus Collinson, Enock Asubonteng, and Kwesi Asmah will be supported by Mohammed Hussein, Mawuli Wayo, Kwabena Boateng, and Stephen Appiah Asare. Martin Karikari, Seth Osei, and Ahmed Ramzy Yussif provide further depth and energy in midfield.

Up front, Hearts will look to Abdul Aziz Adam, Asamoah Boateng Afriyie, and Hamza Issah to deliver the goals in what is expected to be a must-win game. Although Legon Cities have already been relegated, the Phobians are taking nothing for granted.

The Royals are currently 17th with just 25 points from 32 matches and have suffered eight defeats in their last ten games (W1, D1), making for a dismal campaign. However, Hearts will aim to maintain their dominance, especially at home, where they have never lost to Legon Cities since 2020.

With both sides having much to prove—Hearts chasing a top-four finish and Legon Cities looking for a respectable end to a disappointing season—Sunday’s match promises to be a tense affair.

FLASHBACK: ‘I make $1million every single day from mining’

NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi

Amid the continued detention of the embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), over his delayed meeting of bail condition, an old video interview has resurfaced online.

In the interview, he proudly claimed to have made significant daily earnings from gold mining.

The outspoken politician and businessman, in an interview with media personality Deloris Frimpong Manso, popularly known as Delay, revealed that he made a staggering $1 million per day from mining.

“…You can verify from the Precious Minerals Marketing Company. Just mention Hansol Mining or Chairman Wontumi’s name—they know me. They’ll pick up my file, and you can check how much I was making every day. The company was making $1 million each single day. Ghana is so rich. I had about 500 excavators and about 400 pickups.”

Chairman Wontumi was granted bail on Tuesday, May 27, requiring GH₵50 million with two justified sureties, following his arrest by EOCO on suspicions of fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes. Until Friday, his legal team had only managed to secure one surety.

The bail conditions proved difficult for him and his supporters—including high-ranking party members such as former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia—to meet in order to ensure his release.

The former Vice President described the bail conditions as “onerous.”

On Friday, Wontumi’s legal team confirmed that they had fulfilled the GH₵50 million bail conditions set by EOCO. However, despite this development, his release has been delayed due to a fresh legal application filed earlier in the day.

“My client is not going home tonight. We encountered a challenge that needs to be addressed before we can move forward,” his lawyer, Andrew Appiah-Kubi, explained.

“Unknown to me, an application was filed to frustrate what we are doing. We will deal with it on Monday. It is an application that was not filed by me, but it has prohibited his release,” Appiah-Kubi added.

Chairman Wontumi remains in custody, hoping to be released on Monday, June 2, 2025.

US$ 232,960 alleged Cannabis: One more grabbed and remanded

0

A 41-year-old man who was nabbed in connection with 32 vacuum-sealed plant like substances suspected to be cannabis has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Joey Mclaren Hammond is facing charges of conspiracy to commit crime namely, exportation of narcotic drugs without license issued by the Minister responsible for Health, two counts of unlawful possession or control of narcotic drugs with lawful authority.

Hammond’s plea was not taken by the court.

Browne-Frater Chyna Jade is a 22-year-old British national, the first suspect who had earlier on been remanded by another Circuit Court.

Prosecution led by Hilda Craig, Principal State Attorney, prayed the court to remand Hammond.

Defence counsel opposed the prosecution’s prayer, saying Hammond should be admitted to bail.

The Trial Judge, Mr. Isaac Addo, held that looking at the nature of the accusation against Hammond and the severity of punishment, he would decline bail and remanded Hammond into Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) custody to reappear on June 16, 2025.

The facts before the court are that witnesses are authorised officers of NACOC stationed at Terminal three of Kotoka International Airport in Accra.

The first suspect, Browne-Frater Chyna Jade, is a 22-year-old British national holding a United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland passport.

Jade was scheduled to travel on British Airways flight BA 2068 from Accra to London.

The second suspect, Joey Mclaren Hammond, is a Ghanaian businessman residing in East Legon, Accra.

The NACOC received intelligence from its foreign counterparts concerning a drug trafficking syndicate engaged in smuggling Thai-grown and processed cannabis into the Unted Kingdom.

As a result, the first suspect, Jade, became a person of interest and was subsequently placed on the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) Stop List.

On May 18, 2025, at about 6:40 p.m., GIS officials apprehended the first suspect and handed her over to NACOC officers at the Departure Hall of the airport.

During an initial interrogation, she indicated that she had checked in one suitcase, the contents of which she claimed to be unaware.

Acting on suspicion, NACOC officers traced the checked-in suitcase, which had already been loaded onto the aircraft, and had it offloaded.

Jade was then escorted to the NACOC Office, where the suitcase bearing a baggage tag in her name was opened in her presence. Officers discovered thirty-two (32) vacuum-sealed slabs of a plantlike substance suspected to be narcotics. The total weight of the seized substance was approximately 17. 92 kilograms, with an estimated street value of USD 232,960.

A field test conducted on a sample of the substance turned positive result for delta g tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component in cannabis.

Jade was arrested on suspicion of attempting to export narcotic drugs and was taken to the NACOC Headquarters for further investigation.

Jade, during interrogation, said she had been invited to Ghana by her boyfriend. known only as “Joey.”

She further claimed that on the day of her departure, Joey had packed her suitcase in her absence.

When quizzed further about its contents, she was allegedly told it contained Kpoo Keke alcoholic drink, Alomo Bitters, and assorted spices.

She denied any knowledge of the narcotic substances discovered in her luggage.

Efforts were initiated to locate and apprehend the individual identified as “Joey” to assist with ongoing investigations.

The seized narcotic exhibits were sealed in the presence of the suspect and are to be forwarded to the Ghana Standards Authority for analysis.

On Monday, May 26, 2025, Joey, previously declared at large, was arrested and detained in lawful custody.

He was later identified as Mclaren Hammond who voluntarily presented himself to NACOC in the company of his counsel.

During an identification parade, Jade identified Browne Frater as the one who handed her the intercepted suitcase.

Hammond admitted to knowing Jade, and he briefly hosted her in Tse-Addo, but claimed he had no further contact with her thereafter.

The same day, Hammond was arrested and NACOC officers conducted a search at his residence in East Legon, leading to the recovery of assorted weapons, seven wraps of cannabis, and four (4) partly smoked pieces of cannabis from his bedroom.

A black Range Rover vehicle with registration number GE 1435-25 was also impounded.

During an on-the-spot interrogation, Hammond admitted to using cannabis for recreational purposes.

Investigations are still ongoing.

Bail shouldn’t be punishment – Legal expert slams Wontumi case handling

NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi

Private legal practitioner Kwame Adofo has sharply criticised the handling of bail in the ongoing legal case involving the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—describing the process as punitive and contrary to the principles of justice.

Speaking on The Forum on Asaase Radio on Saturday, May 31, Adofo argued that bail should never serve as a form of punishment, particularly when the accused has not been found guilty.

“Bail is never intended to be used as punishment, because the person arrested is presumed innocent until proven guilty,” he explained. “So, if you start punishing the person before he has been found guilty, that is unlawful.”

The lawyer expressed concern over the imposition of what he called “ridiculously high” bail terms, suggesting that such measures amount to an outright denial of bail under the guise of due process.

“When you set bail ridiculously high, it means you have effectively refused the person bail,” he noted. “Look at someone like Chairman Wontumi—with all his businesses, with all his radio stations—what is the likelihood that this man would run away and not return to defend himself?”

Adofo proposed a more reasonable and lawful alternative: the surrender of passports to ensure an accused person remains within the jurisdiction.

“What they can do is ask him to submit his passport, so they can be sure he cannot flee the country. That’s enough,” he advised. “But the moment you set the bail so high, you are presuming that the person is guilty—and that he will run away. That’s where most law enforcement agencies get it wrong.”

Man beheaded in broad daylight by alleged mentally ill attacker at Tema

Body of the deceased being transported to the morgue Body of the deceased being transported to the morgue

Residents of the Tema Main Harbour Railways area were left in shock on Friday following a gruesome incident in which a man was reportedly beheaded by a suspect believed to be mentally unstable.

The attacker, identified only as Ali and said to be in his 30s, allegedly decapitated a man believed to be in his mid-50s, who worked as a caretaker in the area.

Eyewitnesses told the Ghana News Agency that Ali carried the severed head in a bag and walked through parts of the community before being apprehended by the police.

He later led officers from the Tema Regional Police Command to the scene where the rest of the body was discovered. The body has since been deposited at the mortuary as investigations continue.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and authorities have yet to comment officially on the mental state of the suspect.

Locals expressed horror at the act. One resident, Mr. Isaac Adjei, recalled that Ali had previously worked as a porter, helping offload cargo from trucks near the harbour. However, he noted that “for the past two and a half years, he had started acting insane.”

The community, especially those living in informal settlements around the harbour, remains in shock, with many calling for improved mental health interventions and better security in the area.

Counsellor and motivational speaker Charlotte Oduro Counsellor and motivational speaker Charlotte Oduro

Ghanaian counsellor and motivational speaker Charlotte Oduro has broken her silence following her divorce from Apostle Solomon Oduro, delivering a fiery and unapologetic message to critics and to women navigating similar paths.

In a video originally shared by Zionfelix and sighted by MyNewsGh, Charlotte made it clear that she’s not bowing to societal pressures or church expectations that seek to silence or shame her after the split.

“I’m a woman who will stand firm in who I am, and I still preach. I don’t give a heck who is against me. I didn’t die—I’m alive,” she declared boldly.

The outspoken counsellor positioned herself as a voice for women who refuse to let religion or culture crush their spirits. “I’m a testimony for women who didn’t allow society and the church to destroy them,” she said. “They may not accept you now, but with time, they will celebrate you.”

Addressing those who whisper and judge from afar, she continued, “You don’t need to explain yourself to anybody. Life is not in the hands of people—it’s in the hands of God.”

Charlotte also responded sharply to those mocking her while she continues to preach. “If I’m preaching and I hear women giggling at the back, I will shut you up within a minute. That’s who I am. You won’t distract me.”

Speaking with emotion and passion, she empathized with women weighed down by the shame of divorce. “Sister, I see tears in your eyes. You’ve allowed the voices of men to cripple you and sink into your heart—all because you are divorced. You divorced a man, not God. So what is wrong with you?”

Reflecting on her own experience, she added, “Do you think I wanted to end my marriage? Who wants that? No. But sometimes, it needs to happen. And if it happens—it has happened. Then you move on.”

Director of Lilwin’s controversial Ibrahim Traoré movie speaks

Actor, Lilwin [2nd from R] plays the lead role in the movie Actor, Lilwin [2nd from R] plays the lead role in the movie

The upcoming movie by Kwadwo Nkansah Lilwin titled Ibrahim Traoré: The Last African Hero has sparked debate even before its release, with many questioning its intent and political undertones.

Amid the growing concerns, renowned Ghanaian movie director and producer Jackson K. Bentum, who is behind the project, has come forward to clarify the purpose and vision behind the film.

In an exclusive interview with Sean City TV, hosted by Ruthy and Busumuru Sean Kingston, Jackson K. Bentum disclosed that he personally wrote the script and handed it over to Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lilwin, for production.

According to Bentum, Lilwin was the perfect fit for the story’s direction and impact.

“When I completed the script, I knew Lilwin was the ideal person to bring this story to life,” Jackson K. Bentum stated.

However, the movie has not been without controversy. Some critics argue that Ibrahim Traoré: The Last African Hero appears to glorify military coups at a time when West Africa is grappling with democratic instability.

Addressing this concern, Bentum firmly stated that the intention was never to suggest that coups are good.

“We are not saying coups are good. That is not what this movie is about. The story is centered on leadership and impact. Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s leadership in Burkina Faso has brought a sense of renewed hope and sovereignty to the people,” he indicated.

Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who became the leader of Burkina Faso following a coup on September 30, 2022, has become a symbol of anti-imperialist sentiment and youth-driven reform in the country.

At just 34 years old at the time of his rise to power, Traoré became the world’s youngest head of state. He overthrew Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, promising to restore security and national dignity.

Under Traoré’s leadership, Burkina Faso has sought to break away from France’s influence, strengthen ties with Russia, and build local economic resilience. While his regime has received praise from some quarters for its bold stance on self-reliance and internal reforms, others have criticized it for rising authoritarian tendencies and ongoing insecurity challenges.

While a release date has not yet been announced, Bentum and Lilwin hope the film will ignite conversations about leadership, independence, and the future of Africa.

GH¢50m bail not too much for NPP

Prof Ransford Gyampo Acting CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority Prof Ransford Gyampo Acting CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority

Acting CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Prof Ransford Gyampo, has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding the GH¢50 million bail imposed on NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Speaking on TV3’s Keypoints, Prof Gyampo dismissed claims that the bail condition is excessive or unattainable for the ruling party.

“Are we to be fooled into believing that the GH¢50 million bail is too much for the NPP to meet? They are just afraid of using their properties to bail Wontumi. They think we don’t know what they have?” he quipped.

According to him, members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have the means to meet the bail conditions but are simply unwilling to commit their personal assets.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested earlier this week over alleged offences including fraud, money laundering, and connections to international organized crime.

Although bail has been granted, he remains in detention because his legal team has only been able to provide one of the two justified sureties required by the court.

The situation has ignited political tensions, with supporters staging protests and key party figures, including Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, describing the bail amount as “unrealistic.”

However, EOCO insists the amount is fair, given the seriousness of the charges.

Prof Gyampo’s comments challenge that position, instead turning the spotlight on internal party dynamics and raising questions about the NPP’s apparent hesitation to stand behind one of their own.

Reclaim Textile Network to help reduce textile waste

0

By Albert Ansah/Ebenezer Annan, GNA

Accra, May 31, GNA – In a bold step towards minimising the textile waste crisis, a new non-governmental organisation, Reclaim Textile Network (RTN), has been launched in Accra to transform discarded textiles into economic opportunities and sustainable fashion solutions.

The RTN aims to mobilise secondary and tertiary institutions as well as persons with disability to reduce textile waste through repurposing, upcycling, repair, and education.

Speaking at the launch on Friday, Dr Mrs Christiana Konamah Okai-Mensah, the Founder of RTN, described the initiative as a novelty that sought to clean the environment of waste textiles, harness the creativity of students to enable them to generate income to support their education.

“Textile waste is more than just an environmental problem. It is also an economic injustice. Reclaim Textile Network is here to build a new model where creativity, circularity, and community drive change, especially among the youth,” she said.

Dr Okai-Mensah, also a lecturer at the Accra Technical University, said RTN was a forward-thinking decolonial initiative seeking to engage fashion design, artisans, and community members in building a more circular and environmentally conscious fashion ecosystem in Ghana.

Madam Beatrice Arthur, a Sustainability Advocate, said RTN’s mission highlighted the growing urgency of sustainable practices in the fashion industry in Ghana.

“We see it in our markets, in our landfills, and on our beaches. But with networks like this, we begin to cut through the noise, mend the damage, and weave new pathways rooted in circularity, dignity, and indigenous knowledge,” she said.

Madam Arthur called on the public to return to the era of mending, repairing, and reusing, as opposed to discarding and rejecting.

Madam Leticia Nyaaba, the Acting Director at the Environmental Protection Authority, commended RTN for providing a practical solution to the challenges posed by the second-hand clothing trade.

“This initiative supports the government’s vision for a circular economy. We need more homegrown innovations like RTN to reimagine waste as a resource,” she noted.

The event featured an exhibition of upcycled fashion pieces created by young designers who work with second-hand garments.

Guests were treated to a live demonstration of how torn clothing could be transformed into bags, accessories, and contemporary fashion items.

Ghana receives an estimated 15 million garments each week, largely from the Global North, with up to 40 per cent ending up as waste, according to the OR Foundation, which works at the intersection of environmental justice, education and fashion development.

Much of this waste is dumped in open spaces, landfills, or waterways, exacerbating urban flooding, environmental degradation, and public health concerns.

Mensah was handed the armband in the second half after Jordan Ayew, who opened the scoring and captained the side from kickoff, was substituted.

The 26-year-old assumed leadership duties following the absence of several senior players, including Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus, Alexander Djiku, and others who were unavailable for the tournament due to injury or rest.

His composed performance as captain provided further evidence of his leadership credentials as Ghana looks to rebuild with a blend of youth and experience under coach Otto Addo.

PSG 5-0 Inter Milan: New-look PSG make history on emotional night for Luis Enrique in Champions League final

0

Luis Enrique wept tears of joy and emotion as Paris St-Germain delivered the performance of a lifetime to win the Champions League for the first time on a remarkable night in Munich.

And, as PSG outclassed Inter Milan for a historic 5-0 victory, brilliant teenager Desire Doue confirmed his status as one half of a new duo of young superstars – alongside Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal – who have the genius to dominate the game for years to come.

The poignant human story was PSG coach Luis Enrique, who became only the sixth coach to win this tournament with two different clubs after his triumph with Barcelona in 2015.

The sporting story was one of the finest team displays in the history of this tournament, in this and its previous guise of the European Cup, with generational teenage talent Doue as its centrepiece.

On the most important night of a career, Doue made the biggest stage in European club football his playground.

This was also a win heavy with significance and meaning for 55-year-old Asturian Luis Enrique, beyond the glory of the brutal beauty of this PSG triumph that finally brought the giant Champions League trophy to The City Of Light.

The man who has transformed PSG has spoken about how he helped his daughter Xana plant a Barcelona flag in the centre circle after that 2015 triumph over Juventus in Berlin.

He said he hoped he might make the same gesture here in her memory after she died from a rare form of bone cancer aged nine in 2019.

In the afterglow of victory, he pulled on a t-shirt bearing an image of himself and his daughter planting a PSG flag.

And then, in a moment of raw emotion, PSG’s “Ultras” unfurled their own tribute – a giant flag emblazoned with an image of father and daughter, in the French club’s shirt, planting a flag.

It was a wonderful gesture on a joyful night for PSG in Munich, when all their agonies as they chased the Champions League were washed away in one of the greatest displays any team has produced in a European final.

“I’m very happy. It was very emotional at the end with the banner from the fans for my family. But I always think about my daughter,” said Luis Enrique.

“Since day one, I said I wanted to win important trophies, and Paris had never won the Champions League. We did it for the first time. It’s a great feeling to make many people happy.”

Zaato criticises AMJG’s silence over Chief Justice’s removal process

A Political Scientist at the University of Ghana, Dr Joshua Zebuntie Zaato A Political Scientist at the University of Ghana, Dr Joshua Zebuntie Zaato

A Political Scientist at the University of Ghana, Dr Joshua Zebuntie Zaato, has criticised the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana (AMJG) for its silence amid the ongoing removal process of suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

Speaking on TV3’s The Key Points on May 31, 2025, Dr Zaato expressed shock that the Association has not publicly supported the Chief Justice during what he described as an ‘unfair’ process.

“Why is the union so quiet on this matter, so disinterested when one of their members is going through this matter? This is happening to one of their own, and they are quiet,” he questioned.

Dr Zaato stated that the AMJG’s silence could be interpreted as implicit support for the removal process.

He emphasised that history would remember the Chief Justice’s efforts to defend her position, even if she eventually loses the legal battle.

“Her fight is a virtuous fight. She is fighting with honour and integrity. She will go, but history will remember that she fought to the last end,” he stated.

On 22 April 2025, Torkornoo was suspended as Chief Justice by President John Mahama, citing a preliminary investigation that found sufficient grounds for an inquiry into her conduct in consultation with the Council of State as provided for by Article 146 of the 1992 constitution.

On May 21, 2025, she filed an application at the Supreme Court seeking an interlocutory injunction to halt the committee’s proceedings.

The application also called for the disqualification of two justices: Gabriel Scott Pwamang and Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu and other committee members, including Daniel Yao Domelevo, Major Flora Bazuwaaruah Dalugo, and Professor James Sefah Dzisah.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Wednesday, May 28, unanimously dismissed the application, and the full written ruling is expected to be released on June 12, 2025.

GoldBoard CEO Sammy Gyamfi garners accolades for stellar performance

Chief Executive Officer of Goldboard, Sammy Gyamfi Chief Executive Officer of Goldboard, Sammy Gyamfi

GoldBoard’s Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, has earned high praise from President John Mahama for the institution’s outstanding achievements since its inception.

Launched on April 2, 2025, the Ghana GoldBoard has swiftly established itself as a formidable force in the gold trading sector, with its mandate to oversee and regulate gold trading activities in the country yielding impressive results.

President Mahama, speaking at a recent event in the Ahafo Region as part of his national “Thank You” tour, lavished praise on Gyamfi’s leadership, declaring, “Mr. Sammy Gyamfi is the Chief Executive of the Ghana Goldbod that is doing wonders already.”

This glowing endorsement is a prove to the institution’s remarkable strides, which have garnered widespread public support and admiration.

The GoldBoard’s impressive performance has been accompanied by a significant strengthening of the local currency, with the cedi appreciating substantially against the US dollar.

From a high of nearly GH¢16 to the dollar last year, the cedi has now stabilized at around GH¢10 to the dollar, a development that has been met with optimism by citizens and market observers alike.

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, has reaffirmed the central bank’s commitment to sustaining the cedi’s rebound, emphasizing ongoing efforts to bolster the local currency and maintain its competitiveness in the global market.

The institution’s remarkable achievements under Sammy Gyamfi thus far are a powerful indicator of its potential to drive economic growth and development in Ghana, and its future prospects appear bright.
