West Ham United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka has said that pride in his roots influenced his decision to play for the Democratic Republic of Congo national team.

According to him, his parents hail from the African country, and despite his ties with England, he grew up in a Congolese community, so he felt it was right to represent Congo.

The former Manchester United defender disclosed that the delay in playing for Congo was because he wanted to wait for the right time to make such a crucial decision, one that has paid off in his career.

“Because it is my country, where my parents come from, I grew up in a Congolese household. I am proud to represent it. I wanted to join the national team when I was ready. Only I know when I am ready and not when others decide. And at that moment, I thought it was the right time,” he told BBC Africa.

Wan-Bissaka has been an integral part of the Congolese team that beat Nigeria to qualify for the 2026 World Cup intercontinental playoffs and now awaits the final match to determine their fate.

He has also been a pivotal member of the squad that reached the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where they will face Algeria on January 5, 2025.

It is worth noting that the defender represented England at the youth levels; U20, but decided to switch his nationality allegiance to DR Congo.

Ghana condemns US action in Venezuela, demands release of President Maduro and wife

The government of Ghana has expressed strong concern over what it describes as the unilateral and unauthorised invasion of Venezuela by the United States of America, and the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

In a press release dated January 4, 2026, the government of Ghana said it was alarmed by reports that President Maduro and his wife were taken into custody in the early hours of Saturday, January 3, 2026.

Ghana has strongly condemned the unilateral use of force, stating that such actions violate the Charter of the United Nations, international law, and the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of states.

‘Deeply shocked’: World leaders react to US attack on Venezuela

According to the statement, Ghana is closely monitoring developments in Venezuela and warned that actions perceived as assaults on international law, attempts to occupy foreign territory, or exert external control over natural resources particularly oil, pose serious threats to international stability and the global order.

The statement further noted with ‘deep concern’ remarks attributed to US President Donald Trump, in which he reportedly said the United States would ‘run’ Venezuela ‘until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,’ and that major US oil companies would be invited to operate in the country.

Ghana described these statements as reminiscent of the colonial and imperialist era, warning that such declarations set a dangerous precedent for the international system and have no place in the post-Second World War global order.

“To allow this is to put the international community at great risk and undermine the sovereignty of every country,” the statement cautioned.

The government of Ghana also reaffirmed its commitment to the principle of self-determination, stressing that only the people of Venezuela have the right to freely determine their political and democratic future.

Ghana called for the immediate de-escalation of tensions and demanded the release of President Maduro and his wife.

The statement reaffirmed Ghana’s long-standing principled position against invasion, occupation, colonialism, apartheid, disregard for sovereignty, and all forms of violations of international law.

In the early hours of January 3, 2026, US President Donald Trump announced that a large-scale military operation had resulted in the capture of President Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

Elite US forces reportedly extracted the couple from their bedroom in Caracas during a raid accompanied by strikes on military targets in the capital.

President Trump stated that Maduro is aboard the USS Iwo Jima and en route to New York, where he will face federal charges including narco-terrorism and drug trafficking conspiracy.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed the indictments, promising the couple would “face the full wrath of American justice on American soil”.

President Trump further announced that the US would now “run” Venezuela to oversee a transition of power, a process for which he provided no timeline.

NPP’s 3% withholding tax on small-scale gold contributed to 2021 financial woes

Sammy Gyamfi is the CEO of GoldBod Sammy Gyamfi is the CEO of GoldBod

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has blamed the drastic fall in small-scale gold production and foreign exchange inflows in 2021 on a fiscal policy change by the previous administration.

Speaking on Joy FM’s News File on January 3, 2026, Gyamfi stated that the introduction of a 3% withholding tax on the small-scale gold sector that year caused exports to plummet from 39.3 tonnes ($2 billion) in 2020 to just 3.4 tonnes ($185 million) in 2021.

He described the move as a costly mishap that deprived Ghana of billions in potential foreign exchange.

“In 2021, the NPP introduced a 3% withholding tax on small-scale gold. Small-scale gold exports output declined sharply that year from 39.3 tons in 2020 worth 2 billion dollars to 3.4 tons. The whole year 2021 Ghana got 3.4 tons from small-scale sector because of 3% discount in the form of withholding tax. And FX inflows reduced from 2 billion dollars from 2020 to $185 million,” Gyamfi explained.

Comparing this incident with the current strategic focus of both the GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Gyamfi noted that the current primary mandate of these institutions is to bolster gold reserves, support currency stability, and enable broader economic policy.

According to him, the BoG is a banker to the government rather than a profit-maximising entity.

“Learning from this experience, the Bank of Ghana does not pursue its own accounting profits. Because the Bank of Ghana is a banker of last resort, it’s a banker of government, it is mandated to achieve price stability and support the government’s economic policy.

“They are there to build reserves to ensure that your currency is strong, and when you achieve that, the benefits you get render any accounting loss infinitesimal,” he stated.

Gyamfi’s comments come amid public discussions on GoldBod’s financial performance. He dismissed recent reports of a $214 million deficit as “inaccurate.”

Citing provisional management accounts for 2025, Gyamfi reported that GoldBod generated over GH₵960 million in revenue against expenditures below GH₵120 million, positioning the institution to declare a significant surplus.

We welcomed 2026 in Seoul with banku once again — Ghana’s ambassador to South Korea Kojo Choi

Ghana’s Ambassador to South Korea, Kojo Choi, marked the beginning of the New Year by celebrating Ghanaian culture at home in Seoul, sharing a hearty meal of banku with his family.

In a series of vibrant photos shared on his Facebook page, the ambassador was captured seated with his nuclear and extended family, gathered around the traditional Ghanaian staple. He simply captioned the moment, “Happy New Year from Seoul.”

Ambassador Choi explained that the choice of meal was driven by his children, who had once again requested banku as their preferred way to usher in the New Year. He described the dish as a family favourite and a meaningful ritual that has become part of their celebrations abroad.

“We welcomed the New Year in Seoul with banku once again by popular request from the children,” he wrote.

Served with okro stew, the meal, he noted, carried more than flavour. It symbolised home, identity, and a deep sense of patriotism. Despite being thousands of kilometres away, the family felt spiritually connected to Ghana through the food they shared.

“Food has a way of carrying memory, identity, and home across borders. Even thousands of kilometres away, Ghana remains right here at our table,” the ambassador reflected.

He ended the post with a cheerful “Banku to the world,” explaining that it formed part of his ongoing “Ghana to the World” series, which showcases Ghana’s culture and traditions on the global stage.

“New year. Same roots. Same love,” he added, inviting followers to share what they ate to welcome the New Year.

The post resonated widely with Ghanaians online, many of whom praised the ambassador for proudly projecting Ghanaian culture abroad and highlighting the powerful role food plays in preserving national identity.

The Choi family had earlier marked Christmas Day with another traditional Ghanaian meal, waakye, reinforcing their commitment to keeping Ghanaian culture alive, even while living far from home.

Ghana’s greatest resource is its youth, not gold

0

Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has described Ghana’s youth as the country’s most valuable asset, arguing that sustainable national development depends more on people than on natural resources.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, January 4, Dr Adutwum said Ghana’s progress must be driven by disciplined, skilled and hopeful young people, rather than an overreliance on commodities such as gold and oil.

“Ghana’s greatest resource is not gold or oil, it is you,” he stated.

He stressed that empowering the youth has a direct impact on national progress, noting that a country rises or falls with the quality of its human capital.

“When the youth rise with discipline, skills, and hope, the nation rises with them,” he added.

Dr Adutwum also encouraged young Ghanaians not to allow their backgrounds to define or limit their future, urging them to remain focused and prepared for opportunities ahead.

“Your time is coming. Prepare for it,” he urged.

The message, shared under the hashtag #TheAdutwumFactor, forms part of his broader outreach to young people as internal conversations intensify ahead of the NPP’s presidential primary.

The New Patriotic Party’s presidential primary, slated for January 31, 2026, is shaping up to be a fiercely contested race, with five aspirants battling for the party’s flagbearer slot.

They include Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong; Abetifi MP and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong; and former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.

‘Spiritual fraudsters parading as prophets’

Nana Aba Anamoah is a Ghanaian media personality Nana Aba Anamoah is a Ghanaian media personality

Ghanaian media personality, Nana Aba Anamoah, has fired salvos at some prophets in the country following the recent prophecies made during the 31st December crossover services across the country.

In a post shared on X on January 3, 2025, Nana Aba described these pastors as fraudsters parading as prophets.

According to the media personality, most of the prophecies about which candidates will emerge victorious in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries are mainly to chase clout.

“Spiritual fraudsters parading as prophets,” she said.

‘Protect your CV and Wembley issues’ – Okraku-Mantey fires back at Nana Aba

The celebrated media personality additionally noted that it would be better for these prophets to prophecy to their families rather than causing fear and panic in the country.

“If you’re so good, go prophesy doom for your uncles, aunties, and abusuapayins and stop causing fear and panic for innocent people,” she added.

Her comments come on the back of recent prophecies by several Ghanaian prophets, including Fire Oja, Prophet Eric Uche Boahen, Rev Isaac Owusu Bempah, Prophet Bernard ElBernard Nelson-Eshun, and others, who have delivered conflicting prophecies about who will emerge victorious in the NPP flagbearer race.

While some of these prophets predicted that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia would emerge victorious, others have claimed they saw Kennedy Agyapong becoming the next NPP flagbearer.

Let’s support the GoldBod; it holds the key to value retention in Ghana’s mineral sector

0

Sammy Gyamfi is the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Sammy Gyamfi is the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod)

Why I support the GoldBod

My support for Sammy Gyamfi and the GoldBod experiment is hinged on my conviction and understanding of how Ghana can optimize value from it’s natural resources. Mining and financial sector agencies can testify that I don’t only praise were praise is due, but more importantly I have put my expertise at the disposal of institutions of state in the mining and the financial sectors.

Dealing with money laundering risks

Through the UK-Ghana Gold Programme, a UK Home Office support to Ghana in dealing with the illegalities in the small-scale mining sector, we have helped to address substantial money laundering risks in the sector and helped to prepare the country for its next GIABA mutual evaluation, working closely with the Financial Intelligence Centre.

The GIABA mutual evaluation which assesses money laundering risks and associated with it, the financing of Serious Organised Crimes (SOC) begins this month. There will be consequences for the country, if we fail this evaluation. We could be Grey-listed or black-listed with prescribed sanctions.

Roles of CSOs in governance

It is important to understand that CSOs are not set up to fight governments. They are partners in nation-building. They only fight when a government proves intransigent and non-responsive to citizens demands, like we saw under the previous regime. On a good day, CSOs, through their research and analysis, contribute to the search for viable policy alternatives, such as the GoldBod, and support their implementation.

I call on all well-meaning Ghanaians to support this well-intended efforts at ensuring that Ghana’s gold benefits Ghanaians and not foreigners.

Steps to reduce losses

The GoldBod has recently consulted with key stakeholders on a mutually acceptable discount and will be proceeding to adopt a pricing policy this year.

Advise to GoldBod

Going forward, I will advise the management of the GoldBod to be more proactive in providing information on its activities to sustain public trust in its work. It’s trading policies must be published and explained timeously.

On that note, I say a Happy New Year to all those who genuinely wish this country well.
