Craig Richards defeated Dan Azeez with a dramatic knockout victory in the 12th round of their light-heavyweight contest in Ghana. In a historic moment for Matchroom Boxing, where they hosted a show in Africa for the very first time, an evenly-matched contest topped the bill at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra. The two south Londoners, who live five minutes apart in the capital, put on a classic 12-round bout that was ended at the death with a rasping left hook from Richards, which slept his compatriot.

“IJGB please go back, abeg” — actress Gifts Anizoba fumes over traffic, says ‘big cars, empty pockets’ are blocking Lagos roads

Actress Gifts Anizoba has shared her frustration over the gridlock on Lagos roads, calling out IJGBw who she believes are adding to the chaos without reason.

In a rant making the rounds online, the actress complained about roads being completely blocked, saying she had missed her nail, hair, and lash appointments because of the traffic.

She went further to mock what she described as people driving “big big cars” but coming out with “empty pockets,” urging them to simply turn back.

“Please go back. I beg. What is all this?” she said repeatedly, clearly fed up with the situation.

Ruben Amorim tells Kobbie Mainoo to ignore ‘nonsense’ and ‘fight’ for Man United place

0

Ruben Amorim has told Kobbie Mainoo to learn from Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo and remember that being on the bench for Manchester United can be the springboard to better things.

The England international is yet to start a Premier League match for United this season, with his 11 appearances all coming as a substitute, but Amorim urged him to look at the past and fight for his place.

And Amorim denied he was trying to make a statement by omitting Mainoo as he promised him he will start when he thinks it is right.

He said: “Kobbie needs to fight for his job. I think that is not a bad thing to be on the bench of Manchester United when you are 20 years old. I remember Ronaldo was on the bench, Rooney was on the bench sometimes, [Juan Sebastian] Veron was not playing. I remember all the history of Manchester United.

“So let’s continue in trying to avoid the nonsense and the noise. I just want to want to help the team to win. To help Kobbie to be a better player.

“I’m not trying to say to Kobbie, ‘You are a big player here, let’s put him on the bench to show something’.

“No, no. What I’m saying is the opposite. I’m just not putting Kobbie sometimes because I understand that this is not the right guy to start the game. Maybe the next game, Sunday, he is going to start.

“If he plays well, is going to show everyone: ‘This guy cannot take me for the team’. And I will be so happy, so I don’t care. I don’t want to show nothing to anyone. I’m just saying that I’m trying to win games and to show to the players that if you do the things right, you will play no matter what the name.”

Amorim said Mainoo had not come to talk to him this week after his half-brother had worn a T-shirt during Monday’s 4-4 draw with Bournemouth that read: “Free Kobbie Mainoo”.

But the United manager revealed he had been in a similar position at his previous club after an online post from his brother.

“I had the situation in Sporting [CP] that my brother wrote something on the internet, and I have to answer for that,” he said. “My explanation is that he has his life, he has his opinion, and it’s nothing to do with me. So I will do the same with Kobbie.

“He’s a shy boy, but it’s not his responsibility. He’s responsible for his acts and his act was to play well in the last game, I’m just focused on that.”

The Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, Her Excellency Myriam Montrat, has paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, as part of renewed efforts to strengthen trade and investment relations between Ghana and Canada.

The meeting, held in Accra on Friday, December 19, 2025, focused on expanding opportunities for trade diversification, with particular attention to improving market access for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and boosting the agribusiness sector.

Discussions also covered the promotion of responsible and sustainable business practices, the strengthening of bilateral trade partnerships, and the critical role of trade in supporting economic development.

Speaking at the meeting, H.E. Montrat noted that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents significant opportunities that both Ghana and Canada can leverage to expand intra-African and global trade. She encouraged the Ministry to help address trade- and investment-related challenges, particularly within the regulatory environment, to attract more Canadian businesses to Ghana.

The High Commissioner further revealed that Air Canada has expressed interest in exploring operations in Ghana, highlighting the importance of improved air connectivity in enhancing trade, tourism, and people-to-people relations.

In her response, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, welcomed the High Commissioner and expressed appreciation for Canada’s continued interest in Ghana’s economic transformation agenda.

She emphasized that under government’s agribusiness policy, there is a deliberate focus on adding value to raw materials as a strategy to drive industrial growth and create jobs. The Minister also disclosed that litigation-free lands have been acquired and made available to investors interested in contract commercial farming, to support local industries and strengthen value chains.

Hon. Ofosu-Adjare noted that improved connectivity remains critical to boosting trade, investment, and bilateral relations, and reaffirmed government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for investors.

The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of Ghana and Canada to deepen economic cooperation and explore new frontiers for sustainable trade, investment, and development.

Diaspora partnership central to Ghana’s reset agenda – Vice President

0

By James Amoh Junior

Accra, Dec. 20, GNA —  Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang says the African diaspora is central to Ghana’s economic recovery, historical justice and long-term transformation agenda.

She urged sustained collaboration and concrete action as she officially closed the 2025 Diaspora Forum.

The Vice President, speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama at the closing ceremony of the 2025 Diaspora Summit, said the forum was convened at a critical moment when Ghana had deliberately chosen to place history, justice and responsibility at the heart of its national and continental engagements.

She noted that the conversations over the two days had reaffirmed that reparations were not merely abstract moral claims but complex political, economic and historical issues that required structure, persistence and credible leadership.

She said the engagement had helped to clarify Ghana’s evolving partnership with its global citizens.

The Vice President stressed that the idea of the diaspora as the country’s 17th region was far more than a slogan.

According to her, the designation recognised the enduring place of the diaspora in Ghana’s national life and development trajectory, given their continued contributions through remittances, skills transfer, investment, advocacy and cultural preservation.

The Vice President said resetting Ghana would not be possible without strong and purposeful partnerships, adding that government was committed to strengthening diaspora-friendlypolicies and expanding clear pathways for return, investment and collaboration.

She cited ongoing national initiatives aimed at economic revitalisation and agricultural transformation as deliberate entry points for diaspora participation, emphasising that sustainable partnerships were built on enabling conditions rather than rhetoric.

She noted that under the Reset Ghana agenda, macroeconomic stability was gradually being restored, with inflation declining, reserves improving and confidence returning to the economy.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang said these gains were not end points but baseline conditions needed to attract serious investors, innovators and partners, both at home and abroad.

She, therefore, called on the diaspora to help consolidate the progress made so far.

Reflecting on Ghana’s continental role, the Vice President said President Mahama’s mandate as the African Union’s champion for reparations went beyond symbolism to reflect a firm commitment to the dignity, memory and material claims of Africans and peoples of African descent worldwide.

She said the forum had demonstrated that engaging with historical legacies required more than remembrance, but demanded sustained economic, social and psychological rebuilding anchored in accountability and continuous action.

Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, said the 2025 Diaspora Forum marked a watershed in Ghana’s engagement with its global diaspora, describing it as a decisive step towards institutionalising diaspora participation in national development.

He said the summit had laid the foundation for a comprehensive framework to mainstream diaspora engagement as a permanent feature of state policy.

Mr Ablakwa said the deliberations brought together a wide range of stakeholders from Africa, the Caribbean and the broader international community, whose contributions reinforced the global relevance of Ghana’s reparations and diaspora agenda.

He said discussions were characterised by deep reflection on historical injustices, policy-driven partnerships between the state and the diaspora, and a reaffirmation of Ghana’s Pan-African leadership.

The Foreign Minister said participants highlighted persistent structural barriers that limited diaspora investment and participation, including regulatory and legal constraints, and called for reforms to unlock the full potential of diaspora capital and expertise.

He said the summit recognised reparatory justice as a legal and moral obligation rather than an act of charity, while acknowledging that financial compensation alone could not fully remedy the damage caused by colonialism.

He stressed that Ghana’s pursuit of reparatory justice would not undermine its cordial relations with international partners but would rather strengthen them through dialogue rooted in restitution, forgiveness and mutual respect.

The Minister said Ghana remained committed to maintaining friendly relations while advocating for the return of stolen artefacts and broader restorative measures.

Mr Ablakwa announced that, under the directive of President Mahama, government would roll out an e-visa policy in the first quarter of 2026, with special dispensations for Africans in the diaspora to make travel to Ghana easier and more affordable.

The minister said the success of the engagements and discussions would ultimately be measured by the implementation of its recommendations, stressing that follow-up actions would be critical.

Participants expressed confidence that sustained collaboration with the diaspora would help translate shared history into shared prosperity, positioning Ghana as a leading voice in Africa’s global engagement.

Lithium deal: Minister not avoiding stakeholder engagement

0

The Media Relations Officer of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Paa Kwesi Schandorf, has dismissed claims that the Minister, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah is avoiding stakeholder engagement on an alleged proposed 7% lithium royalty rate.

Reports had suggested the Minister was reluctant to participate in discussions on a fiscal framework for lithium royalties, following revisions from an initial 5% proposal to 7%, while some stakeholders continue to push for 10%.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom with Charles Owusu Kumi on Saturday, December 20, Mr Schandorf described the claims as unfounded, saying the Minister has demonstrated openness and accessibility.

“This is funny, I don’t know which quarters this is coming from. Just this Monday, December 15, the Minister, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, had a crunch interaction with Civil Society Organisations at the Alisa Hotel.”

He added: “They all poured out their views and expressed their sentiments not only on lithium but also on mining exploration in Ghana. So, it’s rather curious that anybody would think that the Minister is not open to conversations. That is bogus. It’s not true that the Minister is not available. He’s greatly available and open to better consultations and engagement.”

The lithium mining agreement between the Government of Ghana and Barari DV Ghana Limited was resubmitted to Parliament on Thursday, December 19, after being withdrawn earlier to allow for further stakeholder consultation.

The resubmission has reignited debate over the proposed royalty rate, with critics arguing that the revised arrangement still falls short of the 10% negotiated under the previous administration.

However, the Ministry has denied the claim that the royalty rate is fixed at 7%.

AMA Boss Orders Trotro Drivers Caught Overcharging To Drive Passengers for Free: “Good One”

  • On Wednesday (December 17, 2025), a task force led by the Accra Mayor arrested six trotro drivers for overcharging passengers
  • The Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, said they made an offer to the guilty drivers to either work for the state or face the law
  • Social media users who watched the video thronged the comment section to share their thoughts on the development

Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the Accra Mayor, said the six drivers arrested for charging unapproved transport fares during peak hours on the night of Wednesday, December 17, 2025, have been punished to serve as a deterrent to other commercial drivers.

The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly confirmed the arrest of the six drivers and said the state did not want to charge them criminally.

He added that the drivers were ordered to transport passengers to various destinations for free for a specific number of days as punishment.

“We had an operation from 7 pm to 10 pm, and we were able to arrest 10 drivers. Four escaped, and we apprehended six. We do not want to charge them; we want them to work for the state. So we are giving them the option to work for two days for free. They will load passengers, take them to their destinations, and refund the money they unlawfully collected from passengers. After that, we will let them go. Otherwise, we will charge them and allow the law to take its course.”

The Mayor expressed hope that the action would serve as a warning to other trotro drivers operating within the metropolis.

“Fair move. Enforcing discipline in the system without criminalising livelihoods strikes the right balance. It sends a clear signal that fare hikes won’t be tolerated, while reminding drivers that public transport is a public trust, not an opportunity to exploit peak-hour pressure.”

Hosts open their TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Morocco 2025 campaign in Rabat

Published:

The TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 kicks off this Sunday at the Complexe Moulay Abdellah in Rabat, with the opening match pitting the host nation, Morocco against Comoros.

For the Atlas Lions, the moment has arrived to begin a tournament they are determined to win on home soil, driven by a crowd firmly behind them. The stadium is ready. So is the atmosphere.

For several weeks, Morocco have been meticulously preparing for this occasion.

Head coach Walid Regragui and his technical staff have worked on all fronts, both tactical and physical. Managing the absentees and fitness concerns of key players such as Achraf Hakimi, Hamza Igamane and Sofyan Amrabat has shaped the final adjustments.

Comoros, meanwhile, arrive without excessive pressure but with clear ambition. Stefano Cusin’s side has had limited time to prepare collectively, but each training session has been used to strengthen team cohesion. Considered outsiders on paper, the Coelacanths are determined to defend their chances and to show that they belong on the continental stage.

Kick-off is scheduled for 20:00 at the Complexe Moulay Abdellah.

What Was Said

Walid Regragui underlined the importance of preparation and mindset within his squad.

“We have been working for two years. It will be a big day, at home. Our objective has always been to win the AFCON and to give everything. Our supporters are with us,” said the national team coach.

He also addressed the situation of Achraf Hakimi:“He may start, or he may not. Every match is important. We will have to manage emotions and play with confidence and humility.”

On the Comoros side, Stefano Cusin expressed his pride ahead of this historic occasion. “It is an exceptional opportunity to showcase our country and our team. Morocco are extremely competitive, with or without Hakimi. We are looking for the right balance between defence and attack,” he explained.

Youssouf M’Changama echoed those sentiments: “Playing in the opening match is a great source of pride. We want to continue raising the level of Comorian football.”

Pre-Match Stat:

Morocco and Comoros have met only once in official competition, during the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON 2023 qualifiers, when the Atlas Lions claimed a 2–0 home victory.

Since then, circumstances have evolved, but Morocco remain favourites, especially in Rabat. For Comoros, this opening fixture represents a major test, with the hope of springing a surprise and fully launching their tournament from the very first whistle.

Tema Metropolitan Assembly collects GH¢33.1 million IGF by October 2025

Ebi Bright is the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive Ebi Bright is the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive

The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) collected a total of GH¢33.1 million out of a targeted GH¢37.70 million estimated internally generated fund (IGF).

Ebi Bright, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, disclosed this during the assembly’s ordinary meeting, stating that the amount accrued represented 74.10 percent of its targeted IGF.

Bright stated that, on grants, the assembly recorded 34.44 percent of expected receipts, translating into GH¢21.33 million received out of GH¢53.79 million.

She explained that the shortfall in the grant was largely due to delays in the central government’s releases, a challenge faced by metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) across the country.

She said revenue was the lifeblood of local government, noting that without adequate internally generated funds, the assembly could not deliver services, maintain infrastructure, or invest in development.

“This reality underscores why we must strengthen our internally generated funds. We cannot build our development agenda on resources we do not control. What we can control is what we collect ourselves,” she added.

She stated, however, that they do not fully know what they should be collecting, as the assembly does not have a comprehensive, verified database of all properties in the metropolis, all businesses operating within its jurisdiction, all billboards that should be paying fees, and all revenue points that should be contributing to its coffers.

She questioned, “How can we measure leakage when we do not know what 100% looks like? How can we set realistic targets when we are estimating from incomplete data? How can we hold collectors accountable when we cannot verify what should have been collected?”

The MCE noted that was why comprehensive data collection was the single most important initiative in the assembly’s 2026 agenda, adding that until they knew exactly what existed in their 56.5 square kilometres, they would be governing in the dark.

She stressed that every company and business operating within TMA’s administrative area must honour their financial obligations to the assembly, adding that they would be firm but fair and would engage before they enforce.

The mayor announced that the TMA was set to undertake a full digital records management transformation as part of its 2026 Annual Action Plan, noting that the initiative would involve scanning and indexing historical records, introducing an enterprise document management system and creating digital administrative workflows.

She said cloud backup and disaster recovery systems would also be established to preserve institutional memory and reduce dependence on manual files.

Bright said the assembly had already engaged the Public Records and Archives Administration Department to begin archiving physical documents, adding that digitisation would enhance efficiency and accountability.

Step closer to govt, speak boldly – Prof. Opoku-Agyemang to CSIR

0

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting scientific research and innovation, highlighting the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) as central to Ghana’s development agenda.

The declaration followed a meeting on Friday, December 19, 2025, between the Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman, and CSIR leadership, led by Director-General Prof. Paul Pinnock Bosu.

CSIR, Ghana’s premier public research institution, was established during the era of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and operates through thirteen specialised institutes nationwide, focusing on critical sectors such as agriculture, health, industry, and environmental sustainability.

During the meeting, CSIR officials expressed gratitude for government support, particularly the operationalisation of the Ghana Research Fund, which is expected to boost funding for research and innovation across the country.

The CSIR team also welcomed the opportunity to participate in recent World Food Programme engagements, noting that the experience strengthened the institution’s international collaboration and visibility.

However, officials raised concerns about staffing constraints and ageing infrastructure, highlighting challenges that could affect the institution’s capacity to deliver cutting-edge research.

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman commended CSIR for its transformative work and emphasised the critical role of research in addressing Ghana’s most pressing challenges, including food security, public health, industrial development, and climate resilience.

She stressed that Ghana possesses the expertise and intellectual capacity needed to drive national development and urged CSIR to deepen its engagement with government by speaking more boldly, increasing public visibility, and ensuring research outputs inform policy decisions.

“I conveyed the government’s admiration for CSIR’s transformative work. Ghana does not lack knowledge or expertise; we have researchers who can help solve the most pressing national challenges—from agriculture and food security to health, industry, and climate resilience,” she said.

The Vice President also encouraged the institution to expand exhibitions, public engagement initiatives, and policy-focused research to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and national development needs.

“I encouraged CSIR to step even closer to government, to speak boldly, and to make their work more visible. Exhibitions, public engagement, and policy support are essential. We need research that answers real problems, and CSIR is well placed to lead that effort. I look forward to deeper collaboration as we pursue solutions that put Ghana first,” she added.

The government expressed optimism about strengthening its collaboration with CSIR, noting that research-driven solutions remain critical to advancing Ghana’s socio-economic transformation.

Ghana’s new envoy to U.S. and diaspora lawyers to launch ‘Law Day’ for citizens

0

Ghana’s Ambassador to the U.S., H.E. Victor Emmanuel Smith, has moved to formalise a strategic partnership with the Association of Ghanaian Lawyers of the DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia).

During a high-level courtesy call at the Ghanaian Embassy, Ambassador Smith and the legal fraternity agreed on a series of “diaspora-first” initiatives designed to demystify American law and provide a lifeline for Ghanaians facing legal hurdles abroad.

The highlight of the engagement was the Ambassador’s endorsement of a proposed “Law Day”.

This initiative is envisioned as a recurring open forum where seasoned Ghanaian-American lawyers will provide free legal education and general guidance to the public.

Ambassador Smith emphasised that “Law Day” would serve as a critical preventive measure, equipping citizens with knowledge of their rights and responsibilities to encourage “early intervention” before legal issues escalate into life-altering crises.

“The initiative could help demystify legal processes, equip citizens with knowledge of their rights and responsibilities, and encourage early intervention on legal matters before they escalate,” the Ambassador noted.

Beyond education, the partnership aims to address the most distressing cases involving Ghanaians in U.S. detention.

While the Embassy traditionally provides consular assistance, Ambassador Smith proposed a “collaborative framework” to deepen these efforts.

By leveraging the expertise of Ghanaian lawyers practising in the U.S., the Embassy aims to ensure that nationals who have been arrested receive more than just a visit—they receive a guarantee of fair treatment and due process.

“While the Embassy provides consular assistance, stronger collaboration with legal professionals would deepen efforts to ensure fair treatment and due process for Ghanaian citizens,” Ambassador Smith added.

The delegation, led by legal practitioner Kweku Ofori, emphasised that the visit was a “strategic engagement” to ensure the Embassy has the necessary intellectual resources to handle complex welfare concerns.

Mr Ofori noted that the association has a long-standing tradition of supporting successive envoys to strengthen the legal protection of the diaspora.

Janelle Ocloo, a prominent immigration counsel in the group, highlighted that the association is not starting from scratch.

She revealed that the group has already been conducting free legal clinics focusing on:

  • Immigration Status & Documentation
  • Employment Rights & Workplace Discrimination
  • Access to General Justice

Ocloo expressed optimism that the Embassy’s “official stamp” on these clinics would expand their reach to more vulnerable members of the community who may otherwise be afraid to seek help.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to draft a roadmap for the implementation of the “Law Day” and the detention support framework.

For the thousands of Ghanaians living in the DMV area and across the United States, this alliance signals a new era of coordinated institutional support.

Ambassador Smith commended the group for its professionalism, noting that such structured partnerships are the bedrock of effective cultural and legal diplomacy.

The Central Regional Police Command has arrested seven suspects in an intelligence-led swoop targeting narcotic drug peddling networks within the Cape Coast Metropolis.

The operation, conducted on Saturday, December 13, 2025, focused on drug bases and hotspots believed to be hubs for the sale and use of prohibited substances.

The suspects have been identified as Robert Kobbina, Abu Issifu, Janet Mensah, Emmanuel Quarshie, Osei Boateng, Animful Emmanuel, and Charity Nkrumah.

Police first moved in on a suspected narcotics base at Effutu, where Kobbina and Issifu were arrested. A search on Kobbina led to the retrieval of assorted suspected narcotic drugs and related items, including sachets and tablets of timaking, Tdrona, royal fart, dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, tobacco products, lighters, and packs of assorted cigarettes.

The operation was later extended to Poly Amisano and Nkanfoa, areas identified by police as active drug peddling zones. At Poly Amisano, officers arrested Mensah, Quarshie, Boateng, Animful, and Nkrumah.

A search at a drinking spot operated by Mensah resulted in the seizure of large quantities of cigarettes, tobacco products, lighters, and three jackpot gaming machines. Four additional jackpot machines were confiscated at Nkanfoa.

All seven suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.

The Central Regional Police Command says those found culpable will be processed for court, adding that the swoop forms part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on narcotic-related crime within the metropolis.

Jake Paul Shares Update From Hospital After Surgery Following Anthony Joshua Fight

0

“I’m going to break his face,” Anthony Joshua said during a press conference last month, ahead of Friday’s fight against influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul. Unfortunately for Paul, that was a prophetic statement.

The Netflix main event was a slog, ending in a sixth-round knockout after Paul was unable to get up in time following a big right hook to the jaw from Joshua. Paul was knocked down four times during the bout, with the last time ending the fight.

“I think my jaw is broken,” Paul said after the loss, the second of his career. “Man, that was good. Nice little a– whooping from one of the best to ever do it. I love this s—, and I’ll be back to get a world championship belt at some point.”

That, too, was prophetic. Following the fight, Paul made his way to University of Miami Hospital, where he says he had two titanium plates inserted into each side of his face and had teeth removed.

Paul drops to 12–2 in his career, with his previous loss coming to Tommy Fury in 2023. In the 36-year-old Joshua, he took on a much more experienced fighter, and one who entered the ring with a five-inch height advantage and weighed in at 243.4 pounds to Paul’s 216.6. “This is insane,” Paul told Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix ahead of the fight. “I am a madman. I am out of my f—ing mind.”

Joshua, a former gold-medalist and heavyweight title-holder, is now 29–4 with 26 knockouts.

Ghana Russia Center Signs Historic Partnership with Tatarstan

The Ghana-Russia Center for Commerce and Relations and The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Tatarstan Forge New Cooperation
The Ghana-Russia Center for Commerce and Relations and The Chamber of
Commerce and Industry of Tatarstan Forge New Cooperation

The Ghana Russia Center for Commerce and Relations established formal ties with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Tatarstan in Kazan, becoming the first organization to forge cooperation with the Russian republic’s business chamber.

The engagement in Kazan signals potential for two economically vibrant regions with complementary strengths. Ghana Russia Center CEO John Aggrey and Head of Business Development Ziona Ayorkor Holm led the Ghanaian delegation. Tatarstan’s SEZ Alabuga was represented by Deputy Project Leader Konstantin Trifonov and Leading Specialist Chulpan Islamova. Chamber President Shamil Ageev expressed enthusiasm about Ghana’s interest in collaboration.

Ghana brings rich gold deposits, robust cocoa production and a fast growing technology landscape to the partnership. Tatarstan offers industrial expertise in oil refining, automobile manufacturing and software development. The cooperation promises trade expansion, investment opportunities, technology transfer and knowledge exchange between West Africa and Russia’s industrial heartland.

Ageev emphasized the vital role chambers of commerce play facilitating dialogue between business communities, governments and society to foster sustainable socioeconomic growth. Tatarstan actively pursues the International Cooperation and Exports national project, amplifying commitment to global trade. The republic reoriented exports from Western markets toward Eastern partnerships following geopolitical shifts.

Aggrey highlighted favorable environmental and business climate in Ghana that beckons investors. He underscored Ghana’s readiness to deepen economic ties and harness mutual advantages through institutions including Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry. The Ghana Investment Promotion Centre welcomes investors with open arms according to Aggrey, who quoted GIPC’s vision to make Ghana the first destination of choice for investing in Africa.

The partnership builds on growing Ghana Russia relations through multiple institutional collaborations. The Ghana Russia Center previously signed partnerships with Synergy University in November 2024 for academic and cultural cooperation, and with Ukhta State Technical University in September 2025 for educational ties. The Center organized West Africa’s first international business Cats Olympiad in July 2025 in collaboration with SEZ Alabuga.

Tatarstan hosts a thriving industrial base focused on petrochemicals, automotive production and technology development. The republic’s Chamber of Commerce maintains extensive international networks facilitating business partnerships across continents. Chairman Ageev leads efforts expanding Tatarstan’s representative offices in friendly countries to support exporters accessing new markets.

The Ghana Russia Center launched its Work in Russia, Grow in Ghana programme earlier in 2025, designed to create employment opportunities for Ghanaians in Russia while encouraging Russian investment in Ghana. The initiative aims to benefit both countries through skills transfer and economic development. The Center’s mission focuses on unlocking economic potentials and investment opportunities between Ghana and Russia.

Ghana maintains position as a linchpin in West Africa’s economy with significant natural resources and emerging innovation sectors. The country’s gold mining sector, agricultural exports and expanding digital economy attract international partnerships. Russian Federation Ambassador Sergei Berdnikov previously highlighted growing trade opportunities under new circumstances following geopolitical realignments.

Tatarstan actively develops partnerships with African nations as part of broader Russia Africa cooperation frameworks. The republic participated in the Russia Africa Partnership Forum ministerial conference held in Cairo on December 19 and 20, 2025. Regional chambers of commerce play crucial roles connecting businesses and facilitating concrete economic projects beyond diplomatic declarations.

The convergence of Ghana’s natural resources and emerging tech innovation with Tatarstan’s industrial sophistication represents a dynamic model of cross continental collaboration. Diverse economic ecosystems interlace for shared prosperity through structured institutional frameworks. The partnership could inspire further bridges between Africa and Russia in business and development realms.

Trade between Russia and African nations continues expanding despite Western sanctions pressures. Russia seeks increased roles in African energy infrastructure, rail development and port partnerships across the continent. The mechanism of joint commissions on trade, economic and scientific technical cooperation strengthens bilateral relationships with multiple African countries.

Ghana’s favorable business environment includes competitive corporate tax rates, investment incentives and access to regional markets through economic community agreements. The country offers stable democratic governance, strong legal frameworks and infrastructure development attracting foreign direct investment. Russian businesses exploring African markets find Ghana an attractive gateway to West African regional integration.

AG’s failure to seek extradition of Sedinam Tamakloe appears like ‘settings’ – Dr Zaato

0

Dr Joshua Zaato is a policy analyst Dr Joshua Zaato is a policy analyst

Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, has criticised the Ghanaian government’s handling of extradition and international cooperation with the United States (US).

He accused the authorities of inconsistency and a lack of accountability in pursuing convicted persons who remain abroad.

Failure to extradite Ofori-Atta could encourage politicians to flee justice – Inusah Fuseini

Speaking on TV3’s Key Points on Saturday, December 20, 2025, Dr Zaato noted that Ghana has already extradited some of its citizens to the US and has cooperated with American authorities, including the FBI, in ongoing investigations.

However, he questioned why the same urgency has not been applied to securing the return of Sedinam Tamakloe, a former government official who has been convicted by a Ghanaian court but remains outside the country.

“The government has extradited some Ghanaians already to the United States, and they were even working with the FBI to collect Shatta Wale’s car, which I don’t think they should collect. The point here is: why didn’t they make a request for the repatriation of Sedinam Tamakloe, who has actually been convicted of a crime?” he questioned.

Dr Zaato, also a policy analyst, stressed that Tamakloe’s case is fundamentally different because she has already been found guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction in Ghana, arguing that this should make her return a priority for the state.

“You have a woman there who has been convicted. In this case, you are not saying, ‘Bring her back so we can prosecute her.’ A court of competent jurisdiction has already found her guilty,” he said.

He further argued that Ghana should leverage its cooperation with the US as part of a reciprocal arrangement, suggesting that extradition requests should be tied to good-faith gestures on both sides.

According to him, Ghana could insist on a simultaneous exchange to ensure that convicted or wanted persons are returned to face justice at home.

“Now the Americans are saying, ‘Send us this man so we can prosecute him.’ Look, I think it should be a very easy, straightforward cut-off negotiation: ‘We’ve given you two people. Now also return one to show us good faith. The next person you want, put Sedinam on a flight in Washington, DC, and we will also put this man on a flight at Kotoka. They should land at the same time,’” he suggested.

He also linked the issue to other ongoing cases, urging Ghana to be more assertive in negotiations involving fugitives wanted by the US.

Calling on the Attorney General to be more transparent and decisive, Dr Zaato proposed a conditional approach to cooperation.

“The inability or unwillingness of this government to exercise that option smells of a certain level of cover-up or an unwillingness to bring that woman down. For me, it cuts to the core of everything that is happening. It looks like all of this is shenanigans, and it is upsetting because there is another person they are looking for, and he is Abu Trica,” he asserted.

Here’s how much Ken Ofori-Atta could be paying top US lawyers in extradition fight

He added, “Why can’t the Attorney-General come out and say, ‘We will put Abu Trica online if and only if you also either send us Ken or Sedinam’? For the sake of accountability and sanctity, why can’t we trade him for one of these people?”

Stay home and let’s build Garu together – MP urges residents

0

The Member of Parliament for the Garu Constituency, Dr Thomas Anaba, has urged residents to remain in the area and work closely with the government to accelerate development in the constituency.

He said several government-supported projects earmarked for Garu are expected to significantly improve living conditions and create employment opportunities, particularly for the youth.

Dr Anaba made the call while speaking to Citi News on Saturday, December 20, 2025, during a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of four basic schools, two Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, and eighteen boreholes across the constituency.

He appealed to residents to reduce the growing trend of migrating to southern Ghana in search of jobs and instead take advantage of the development initiatives underway.

According to him, planned irrigation and mechanisation projects are intended to provide alternative livelihoods for young people, including those previously engaged in illegal mining activities.

“A lot of projects are coming in to halt the drift of our youth to the south in search of galamsey jobs. The irrigation and mechanisation projects will employ many of them, including those with experience operating heavy machinery,” he said.

Dr Anaba noted that the construction of new basic schools would improve access to education by reducing the long distances children travel to attend school. He added that the projects would also create employment opportunities for trained teachers and other support staff within the communities.

He further called on residents to support the smooth implementation of the projects, stressing that they would enhance educational standards and expand access to quality healthcare through the CHPS compounds under construction.

Touching on healthcare delivery, the MP explained that the new CHPS compounds would include nurses’ quarters and mechanised boreholes to ensure effective service delivery.

“The CHPS compounds will ensure that healthcare is brought closer to the people. With nurses accommodated on-site and access to water, the facilities will be fully functional to serve the communities,” he said.

Dr Anaba urged residents to trust the government and cooperate to ensure the sustainability of the projects. The construction of the CHPS compounds is expected to be completed within eight months.

I’ll ensure Builsa South gets agric college – Apaak

0

The government is considering the establishment of an agricultural college in the Builsa South District of the Upper East Region as part of efforts to expand access to technical and agricultural education.

This was disclosed by the Deputy Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, during the annual Feok Festival held in Sandema on December 19, 2025.

Addressing traditional leaders and residents at the event, Dr. Apaak said the proposed institution would serve the broader Builsa area and support the development of agriculture in the region.

He explained that recent administrative changes, which place agricultural colleges under the Ministry of Education, have created opportunities to expand such institutions across the country.

“As Deputy Minister for Education, and considering that agricultural colleges are now under the Ministry of Education, I can assure you that Buluk will get an agricultural college, to be located in Builsa South,” he stated.

Dr. Apaak noted that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader agenda to strengthen agricultural training, boost food security and create employment opportunities for young people, particularly in rural communities.

Ghana Impact Project donates $20k to restore mobility for children

0

The Ghana Impact Project has made a significant contribution toward improving the lives of physically-challenged children in Ghana with a $20,000 donation to the Orthopedic Training Centre in Nsawam.

The donation, made in December 2025, was formally presented by Dr Michael Adjei, an anesthesia doctor based in Indiana and a board member of Ghana Impact Project.

The funds will provide prosthetic limbs for 40 children, offering them renewed independence and the ability to live more active lives.

Speaking during the presentation, Dr Adjei praised the resilience and courage of the children benefiting from the program and reaffirmed the organization’s long-term commitment to restoring mobility for those in need.

He emphasised that access to prosthetics goes beyond physical support, describing it as a pathway to dignity, confidence, and opportunity.

Founded in 2021, Ghana Impact Project works closely with the Orthopedic Training Centre to ensure that children receive properly fitted prosthetics and ongoing care.

Prior to this donation, the organisation had already supported over 80 children across the country through similar interventions.

The $20,000 donation was part of funds raised during the organization’s recent gala dinner fundraiser, reflecting the collective effort of donors, partners, and volunteers who share a vision of inclusive healthcare and social impact.

With this latest contribution, Ghana Impact Project continues to strengthen its mission of giving the gift of mobility, reaffirming its role as a key advocate for physically challenged children in Ghana.

The members of the Ghana Impact Project team are:

Kobby Okum (President)
Clancy Agbenyo (Treasurer)
Leslie Mills (Secretary)
Dr Micheal Adjei (Member)
Dr Nana Adu-Amankwa (Member)

Unconventional Leisure Redefines Weekends as Ghana’s Entertainment Economy Broadens

0

Ghana’s leisure and entertainment landscape is undergoing a quiet transformation as unconventional recreational activities reshape how residents, visitors and the diaspora spend weekends and holidays, signalling a maturing urban lifestyle economy beyond beaches, malls and restaurants.

Across Accra and its surrounding areas, a growing number of purpose-built recreational hubs are attracting young people, families and tourists seeking experiences that were largely absent from Ghana’s social scene a decade ago. This shift is helping to diversify domestic tourism, extend visitor stays and make Ghana more attractive to diasporans and foreign residents.

Facilities such as Freedom Skatepark in Accra, known for its distinctive skate designs, and Afrikiko, home to the country’s largest indoor roller rink, are drawing skating and rollerblading communities that previously had limited options. Bliss Entertainment Center and Game It Up are also expanding weekend choices with bowling lanes, trampolines, go-kart racing and arcade gaming, creating indoor entertainment alternatives that are weather-proof and family-friendly.

Unconventional Leisure Redefines Weekends as Ghana’s Entertainment Economy Broadens

Outdoor adventure has followed a similar trajectory. Bamble’s Adventure Park has popularised paintball as a group leisure activity, while Shai Hills has seen growing interest in ATV tours  (All-Terrain Vehicle tours) that combine recreation with nature exploration. Beach clubs such as Sajuna in Tema are blending leisure, music and dining into curated lifestyle destinations, offering experiences that go beyond traditional beachfront outings.

Beyond high-energy entertainment, serene destinations are also gaining traction. Aqua Safari, which combines resort-style relaxation with wildlife experiences rarely encountered domestically, is positioning itself as a short-stay alternative for residents seeking escape without international travel. Such offerings cater to professionals, families and expatriates looking for controlled, premium leisure experiences within the country.

Unconventional Leisure Redefines Weekends as Ghana’s Entertainment Economy Broadens

The rise of these activities reflects changing consumer preferences, urbanisation and increased exposure to global leisure trends. The developments are also creating new revenue streams, supporting jobs in entertainment, hospitality and transport, and encouraging private investment in lifestyle infrastructure.

For the diaspora and foreign residents, the expanding range of leisure options will make extended stays in Ghana more comfortable and engaging. Weekend experiences that mirror global standards, while retaining local character, are critical to positioning Ghana as a lifestyle destination rather than just a cultural or heritage stop.

As disposable incomes slowly recover and experiential spending grows, the trend will be expected to deepen, with more niche entertainment concepts emerging across major cities and tourist corridors. The result is a broader, more resilient leisure economy that is keeping fun alive on weekends and holidays, while strengthening Ghana’s appeal to a global audience.

“As this is only the second edition, we are excited to see growth, in male participation compared to last year, this shows that the students are beginning to embrace the value of martial arts,” Master Akoto stated adding that more students expressed interest in participating, but were unable to do so due to lack of funds for transportation from Koforidua to Akuapem and hope for more sponsorship in the future, to empower hearing-impaired students through such sporting initiatives.

Madrid battle Chelsea, City for Honest Ahanor

0

Real Madrid have emerged as the latest European heavyweights monitoring Nigeria’s highly rated teenage defender Honest Ahanor, intensifying a transfer race led by Chelsea and Manchester City, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 17-year-old Atalanta starlet has quickly become one of the most closely watched young defenders in Europe after an outstanding breakthrough season in Bergamo, according to a report by TeamTalk.

Chelsea are understood to be leading the chase, having tracked Ahanor since his formative years at Genoa, but Madrid’s growing interest is expected to reshape strategic thinking around the youngster’s future.

Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham and Newcastle are also actively monitoring his progress, while Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig have sent scouts to watch him in Italy this season.

Ahanor joined Atalanta in the summer in a deal worth around €20m, yet his rapid adaptation to senior football has made a prolonged stay far from guaranteed. The left-sided defender is comfortable operating at centre-back, full-back and in midfield, and has already made six starts for Atalanta this season.

Chelsea and Manchester City scouts have reportedly been virtually ever-present at Atalanta matches in recent weeks, reflecting the seriousness of their interest.

Atalanta remain in a strong negotiating position with Ahanor contracted until 2028. The Serie A side could look to more than triple their initial investment should bids approach the €60m mark.

The Super Eagles-eligible defender will be eligible to move to England at the end of the season when he turns 18 in February, opening the door for Premier League clubs to act decisively.

Former Italy international Aldo Serena recently praised Ahanor’s potential, stating he could become one of the best in the world in his position by the age of 20.

Chicken imports threaten success of ‘Nkoko Nkitinkiti’ policy – Solomon Owusu

0

Solomon Owusu is Director of Communication for the United Party Solomon Owusu is Director of Communication for the United Party

Spokesperson for the United Party, Solomon Owusu, has called on the government to stop the importation of chicken, arguing that the move is critical to the success of the government’s “Nkoko Nkitinkiti” project.

Speaking on TV3’s NewDay on Saturday, December 20, 2025, Owusu lauded the initiative but warned that it would fail if the importation of frozen poultry continues.

‘Nkoko nkitinkiti’ project will save Ghana US$300 million on imported chicken – President Mahama

“It is one of the brilliant policies that I have ever seen in my life. But that policy will fail if you continue to allow politicians, if you continue to allow party financiers to continue to import their chicken from Brazil, from the Netherlands, from the United States, without promoting the local one,” he said.

Solomon Owusu explained that the dominance of imported poultry has affected demand for locally produced chicken, largely due to price differences driven by high production costs in Ghana.

“That is why there seems not to be any demand for it. Because, you see, if you are going to do the cost-benefit analysis, a bag of maize in Ghana is more expensive than maize coming from South Africa,” Owusu noted.

President Mahama to launch ‘Nkoko Nkitinkiti’ programme on November 12

According to him, consumers will naturally choose cheaper options, making it difficult for local poultry farmers to compete unless the government intervenes decisively.

“Human beings will behave rationally at any given time, and so they would rather prefer to buy the cheaper one as against the expensive one coming from Ghana. So government must, first of all, and as it is doing, try and reduce the various factors that influence production, and beyond that, make sure the ‘Nkoko Nkitinkiti’ project becomes a national movement,” he added.

The “Nkoko Nkitinkiti” initiative is a nationwide programme aimed at transforming the poultry industry, creating jobs and boosting exports.

President John Dramani Mahama officially launched it in Kumasi on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.

Speaking at the launch, President Mahama described the initiative as a bold and practical step towards achieving food self-sufficiency and empowering communities across the country.

He said the project was “more than just a government intervention,” describing it as a national movement, a courageous step towards restoring food self-sufficiency, strengthening household resilience, and fostering sustainable livelihoods for tens of thousands of Ghanaians.

The initiative forms part of the Poultry Industry Revitalisation Programme, which is a flagship component of the broader Feed Ghana Programme designed to drive agricultural transformation, food sovereignty and shared prosperity.

Ghanaian troops arrive in Jamaica to assist hurricane recovery

0

A contingent of Ghanaian military engineers has arrived in Jamaica to assist with recovery operations following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.

The 54-member team, drawn from the Ghana Armed Forces’ 48th, 49th, and 50th Engineer Regiments, is expected to work closely with the Jamaica Defence Force’s 1 Engineer Regiment. Their assignment includes repairing damaged public infrastructure and constructing temporary accommodation for residents displaced by the storm.

The deployment was facilitated through a United States military airlift, highlighting growing cooperation between Ghana, the U.S., and Caribbean nations in responding to humanitarian emergencies.

Ghana’s support began shortly after the hurricane struck, with relief items such as food supplies, blankets, mattresses, medical kits, and other essentials dispatched to affected communities.

President John Dramani Mahama described the mission as part of Ghana’s long-standing commitment to international solidarity and humanitarian assistance, citing the country’s history of supporting nations in times of crisis.

However, the deployment has sparked debate at home. Some opposition figures and members of the parliamentary minority questioned the decision to send troops abroad without prior parliamentary approval, citing constitutional and financial concerns. Others argued that Ghana’s own infrastructure projects could benefit from the expertise of the deployed engineers.

Responding to criticism, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa defended the mission, stating it aligns with Ghana’s foreign policy and humanitarian obligations. He told Parliament that such deployments strengthen diplomatic ties, enhance Ghana’s international reputation, and reaffirm the country’s role as a responsible member of the global community.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr. Randy Abbey, has strongly condemned the widespread manipulation of cocoa weighing scales by some Purchasing Clerks (PCs), describing the practice as outright theft against hardworking cocoa farmers.

According to Dr. Abbey, investigations and complaints indicate that some PCs deliberately adjust weighing scales by more than 10 kilogrammes in order to shortchange farmers during the purchase of cocoa beans.

636 additional Blue Water guards deployed

0

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has reinforced the Blue Water Guards initiative with the deployment of 636 additional personnel, bringing the total number of trained and deployed guards to 1,700 nationwide.

The announcement was made during the passing-out ceremony of the third batch of Blue Water Guards on Saturday, December 12, at the Ghana Navy Forward Operating Base in Ezilebo, Western Region.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, said the expanded deployment across seven regions demonstrates the government’s firm commitment to protecting Ghana’s water bodies from the destructive effects of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

“The Blue Water Guards have become a critical frontline force in the fight against water pollution. They are working tirelessly to disrupt illegal mining activities along our rivers and streams,” the Minister said.

He added: “So far, we have trained about 1,700 Blue Water Guards across nearly seven regions. We are very proud of the pioneers who began this work. They are standing in the way of galamsey operators and making their activities increasingly difficult. We will remain resolute and continue this fight until our waters are restored.”

Minister Armah-Kofi Buah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to further expand and resource the initiative, emphasizing that safeguarding water resources is central to national environmental protection efforts.

‘Invaluable’—Enzo Maresca Keeps Ownership Tension Simmering With Chelsea Transfer Plea

0

After a week of an entirely self-inflicted scrutiny over his relationship with the club’s upper management, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca kept this hot topic aflame by lauding the “invaluable” impact of balancing the squad with senior players, which, he admitted, goes against the ideals of his bosses.

It’s been a wild seven days for Maresca. A routine win over Everton, qualification for the Carabao Cup semifinals and an inspired comeback at Newcastle United’s daunting St James’ Park have been firmly overshadowed by the drama inspired solely by the Italian manager.

What began with a question about Malo Gusto’s form escalated into a cryptic swipe from Maresca at the “worst 48 hours” of his Chelsea tenure after facing a lack of support from “many people.” A staunch refusal to explain these comments opened the door to wild speculation, which was only ramped up by reports that Manchester City consider Maresca to be a suitable replacement for Pep Guardiola.

Chelsea’s manager firmly played down those City rumours, saving this weekend’s controversy for the question of seniority.

“When you have 20 and 21-year-olds and a player who is 30 or 31, and he starts to say something to them, it’s invaluable. But it’s the strategy of the club,” Maresca lamented to TNT Sports before his young starting XI shipped two first-half goals.

At 28, goalkeeper Robert Sánchez was the oldest player on the pitch for the Blues this weekend. Tosin Adarabioyo, who turned 28 in September, is the oldest player in Maresca’s Premier League squad, which includes 12 players aged 21 or under.

Just as they did last season, Chelsea comfortably boast the youngest squad in the Premier League, with an average age of 24.7. In the season before the club’s current ownership took charge (2021–22), the Blues ranked 15th in this metric (27.4 years young).

This is not by chance. As Maresca outlined, the club have undergone a very deliberate transfer strategy focused exclusively on youth. Chelsea haven’t spent money on a player over the age of 25 since co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley joined the club in 2022.

It would be unfair to paint Maresca as a José Mourinho-esque figure distrustful of youth. “I love the squad, I love young players,” he insisted earlier this week. However, he has once again made it abundantly clear that he has no influence over the profile of players he is tasked with leading to glory. “I just focus on what I can control—pitch-side,” he clarified, “knowing that there is always noise you need to manage.”

Rather than dwell on the insipid first-half display which could very well have seen Chelsea enter the dressing room with more than a two-goal deficit to overturn, Maresca focused on the positives of the second-half showing.

“My message at the end of the game is, for sure in the first half we could do better, but the character they showed in the second half should make them proud,” he told assembled media.

When pushed on how he has dealt with the past seven days, Maresca ignored the screaming subtext. “My last week has not been complicated. It has been good,” he claimed.

“We beat Everton, we beat Cardiff and we drew Newcastle away. So in terms of results, I am happy. Again, there are things that for sure we can do better. But I think we are going in the right direction.”

I’ll ensure Builsa gets agric college – Apaak

Ghana’s Ambassador Victor Smith presents credentials to Trump

0

Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, has formally begun his diplomatic assignment in Washington after presenting his credentials to U.S. President Donald J. Trump at the Oval Office of the White House.

Ambassador Smith was among 15 newly appointed ambassadors accredited to the United States and was notably the first envoy received by President Trump during the credential ceremony, underscoring the importance of Ghana’s diplomatic engagement with Washington.

According to officials present at the meeting, President Trump welcomed the Ghanaian envoy warmly, remarking, “Look at this good-looking guy,” a comment that drew light-hearted laughter and set a cordial tone for the interaction.

During the engagement, Ambassador Smith delivered a message from President John Dramani Mahama, reaffirming Ghana’s strong commitment to deepening its long-standing bilateral relations with the United States.

He highlighted Ghana’s interest in expanding cooperation in trade, investment, and economic diplomacy, describing the country as a stable democracy and a strategic gateway to both regional and continental markets.

“Ghana serves as an entry point to a sub-regional market of over 400 million people and a continental market of more than 1.4 billion people, making it an attractive destination for American businesses seeking to expand into Africa,” Ambassador Smith said.

The envoy also drew attention to Ghana’s role as host of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, reinforcing its position as a hub for intra-African trade and investment.

Ambassador Smith expressed Ghana’s readiness to deepen engagement with U.S. companies, particularly in key sectors such as manufacturing, agribusiness, energy, technology, and services. He further extended an invitation to President Trump to visit Ghana, noting that such a visit would help consolidate diplomatic ties and unlock new opportunities for cooperation.

The presentation of credentials marks a significant milestone in Ambassador Smith’s tenure and signals a renewed phase of engagement aimed at strengthening U.S.–Ghana relations across political, economic, and people-to-people spheres.

Use property rates to improve sanitation – Ahmed Ibrahim to MMDAs

0

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has charged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to use their internally generated funds, particularly property rates, to recruit sanitation workers and improve waste management.

The Minister made the call during an unannounced monitoring visit to the Korle Klottey and La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assemblies on Saturday December 12, aimed at assessing sanitation conditions ahead of the festive season.

Mr. Ibrahim stressed that while residents are encouraged to participate in periodic clean-up exercises such as National Sanitation Days, the responsibility for keeping communities clean rests primarily with the local assemblies.

He noted that MMDAs have access to internally generated funds, as well as the sanitation component of the District Assemblies Common Fund, which should be used to address sanitation challenges on a continuous basis.

According to the Minister, property rates collected from communities must be reinvested directly into waste clearance and environmental cleanliness to ensure effective sanitation at the source.

“Property rates used to be collected at the centre, but that responsibility has now been transferred to the assemblies. The property rates you collect must be used to clear waste and keep your communities clean,” he said.

The Minister urged assemblies to take full ownership of sanitation management, stressing that maintaining clean environments should not be limited to festive periods but sustained throughout the year.

AFCON to Shift to Four Year Cycle After 2028 Edition

AFCON to Shift to Four Year Cycle After 2028 Edition
Afcon

The Africa Cup of Nations will be staged every four years from 2028 in a major change to the biennial format that has been in place since 1968, Confederation of African Football president Patrice Motsepe announced Saturday.

Motsepe revealed the change on the eve of the 2025 tournament in Morocco as part of a significant restructuring of international football on the continent to help it fit better into a packed global calendar. The decision ends a long standing tradition of hosting Africa’s premier international football tournament every two years.

According to Motsepe, “We have the most exciting new structure for African football.” The CAF president stated the decision was driven by the need to align African football more closely with the global calendar and reduce long standing tensions with European clubs over player availability.

The current biennial format will conclude with the 2027 tournament in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, after which the competition will transition to a four year schedule starting in 2028. A one off AFCON will still be held in 2028, after which the competition will fully transition to the four year cycle, with the next edition following in 2032.

To fill the competition gap created by the extended AFCON cycle, CAF will introduce an African Nations League scheduled to begin in 2029 and run annually. The new competition is expected to provide regular high level matches for national teams while easing pressure on players and clubs during congested seasons.

Motsepe said the African Nations League would involve each of the continent’s 54 members divided into four geographical zones, with games in September and October before the finals are held in November. He emphasized that there will be a competition every year where the best African players who play in Europe and worldwide will participate on the continent.

An AFCON every two years was a vital source of revenue for African national associations, but Motsepe said the introduction of the annual African Nations League competition, similar to the UEFA Nations League, would now help boost coffers instead. CAF also confirmed an increase in prize money for the tournament’s winners, raising the top reward from $7 million to $10 million.

The scheduling of AFCON has been a recurring challenge in recent years. The last three editions were rescheduled, with the 2021 tournament played in 2022 due to infrastructure delays in Cameroon, and the 2023 edition moved to early 2024 for similar reasons.

CAF had previously attempted to shift the tournament from its traditional January to February window to June and July, but only the 2019 edition in Egypt was held during that period, with extreme heat affecting performances. Tournaments in West Africa have also struggled with a June to July slot because of heavy rainfall and the risk of flooding.

The Morocco 2025 tournament was initially planned for June and July, but the expansion of FIFA’s Club World Cup to 32 teams, scheduled for the same period, forced a change. As a result, the competition will now be played between December 21, 2025 and January 18, 2026.

The biennial format has frequently drawn criticism, particularly from European clubs, because most recent editions were staged in January and February, disrupting domestic leagues and international competitions. The change aims to make sure the football calendar worldwide is more in harmony, Motsepe stated.

FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafström, who flanked Motsepe for the announcement, called it a historic decision and said FIFA would coordinate with CAF. He noted that it is now up to CAF to decide where the competition will be played in 2028 and provide the dates to FIFA for coordination.

By shifting AFCON to a four year cycle, CAF believes the tournament will gain greater prestige, improved planning stability and enhanced global appeal, similar to other major continental championships like the UEFA European Championship and Copa America.

Young woman alleges long-term abuse by Police Inspector father on live TV

0

A 22-year-old woman, identified as Lawrencia Partey, has accused her biological father, Inspector Lawrence Partey of the Nsawam Police Service of incest.

According to Lawrencia, whose mother is deceased, her father began sexually abusing her when she was just 14 years old, claiming he was the one who broke her virginity.

Seeking help, she appeared on Sompa Nkomo on Sompa TV, a programme hosted by popular Ghanaian media personality Genevieve Abrefa Yeboah, also known as Oheneni Adazoa, which addresses domestic issues.

Lawrencia recounted that she lived with her stepmother and her father in the Northern Region. She alleged that during her father’s first attempt, he warned her never to disclose the abuse, threatening to kill or abandon her in the North if she spoke out.

“I was 14 years old when he first slept with me. I developed sores in my private parts and they bought me medicine. My father told me that if anyone asked, I should say it was my teacher,” she revealed.

She explained that she falsely accused one of her teachers of being responsible but her father insisted he would not let the teacher face the law. Instead, he withdrew her from the school.

The teacher, she said, maintained his innocence, declaring that God would vindicate him.

Lawrencia further narrated that her stepmother once caught them. She confided in her and spoke the whole truth to her but the woman was unwell at the time.

“One day, my stepmother caught us and I explained everything to her. However, she was not feeling well at the time, so her family members took her to the Volta Region, where she eventually died. Before her death, she told her family to investigate what I had revealed. During her funeral, they confronted my father about the issue but he denied it. Afterward, we relocated to Adieso and he continued sleeping with me,” she added.

Lawrencia stated that she once reported her father to the police and he was detained but later released at the Adieso Police Station.

She added that she still lives with her father now at Nsawam, who continues to abuse her and expressed her desire to leave the house and gain her freedom leading her to seek help through the radio programme.
