‘Come to my funeral in a candidate’s t-shirt and you won’t return’ – Bagbin laments lack of respect for the dead

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, has issued warning to politicians who turn funerals into campaign grounds.

Bagbin made the remark while expressing outrage over what he described as growing disrespect for deceased Members of Parliament.

He lamented that once an MP is dead, his replacement is prioritised over mourning.

His comments followed the death of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Akwatia MP, who passed away on July 7, 2025.

Addressing Parliament, Bagbin expressed shock at Kumi’s death and criticised the growing trend of political jostling that often overshadows the mourning of departed MPs.

“We are all shocked by the demise of our colleague. But we’re just trying to do the proper thing. And it could be any of us. That is what gave the public the impression that you don’t matter… So immediately it happens, nobody cares about the dead. They are looking at who is going to replace the dead,” Bagbin lamented.

Recounting a past incident at a funeral in Fomena, the Speaker condemned the practice of wearing candidates campaign T-shirts at funerals of deceased MPs.

“I told them that in the unlikely event that I am no more as a Member of Parliament, anybody who comes to my funeral with a T-shirt of another person will not go back… So please, take this seriously and let’s do the proper thing,” he stressed.

He added that the Electoral Commission (EC) would be duly informed of the vacancy in Akwatia in line with proper procedures.

Meanwhile, the Minority caucus staged a walkout on Thursday, July 17, 2025.

The protest was triggered by criticism from Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who faulted Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin for announcing Kumi’s death in the absence of the Speaker.

Ayariga argued that the act breached parliamentary protocol, insisting that only the Speaker is constitutionally mandated to communicate a vacancy to the House.

“Are we to treat the communication from the leader of the Minority caucus… that our colleague belonging to his side is no more, as a communication that the seat has become vacant? This House, ordinarily, has never in the past discussed the matter until there was an official communication by the Speaker,” Ayariga stated.

Afenyo-Markin, however, defended his decision, insisting he had issued a “clear caveat” when making the announcement.

The Minority, unhappy with Ayariga’s remarks, described them as “insensitive” and walked out in protest.

I was raised to sit at the table of power – NAPO opens up on leadership destiny

0

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, says his path to political leadership is not the result of mere ambition, but rather the product of a deeply rooted sense of duty cultivated from childhood.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Personality Profile with Emefa Adeti on July 17, the former Manhyia South MP and running mate to the NPP flagbearer said he was brought up to sit with decision makers, not just follow them.

“I would say that is how I was brought up,” he declared. “I was brought up in a very politically aware family with a history of decades of partisan politics or active political life.”

According to NAPO, his upbringing instilled in him more than a passing interest in governance. From an early age, he was conditioned to value impact, service, and leadership.

“I was brought up to cherish one thing, public service, and not only public service, but bringing value through public service and for public service, meaning you just don’t participate. You participate in terms of regular impact.”

He stressed that the expectations placed on him went beyond symbolic involvement. It was about proving himself, demonstrating his ability to sit and engage at the highest levels of decision-making.

“That is how I was brought up, brought up to prove myself that I can sit at the table with decision makers, and not only the elderly, but a true decision maker.”

The influence came not just from his immediate household, but from a network of older relatives—men whose children were far older than he was. Yet NAPO served them diligently, absorbing their values and vision.

“So brought up by grand uncles and uncles far older than myself, whose children were far older than me, and I served all of them, so that’s how I was brought up.”

Public service, he said, was etched into his consciousness so deeply that it became the measure for all his associations and decisions, even as a child.

“So me growing up having public service has been a duty that has been imprinted in my heart, mind, and everything I do, so even deciding to belong to which associations growing up were all the associations that brought public service to the fore.”

He rattled off the list: Boy Scouts, altar boy duties, the Red Cross. Each step was a deliberate preparation for a life dedicated to service.

“Like joining Boy Scouts at a very early age, be an altar boy. Not only that, joining the Red Cross Society, going to do medicine and public service.”

To NAPO, public service is not measured by the size of the act, but by the depth of its impact. Whether saving a life in a surgical room or shaping policy for a nation, the ethos remains the same.

“The only difference is that some public service duties are very, very small, personal, but really impactful, and some are large and maybe impactful.”

He drew a vivid contrast between the intimate work of a doctor and the sweeping reach of political leadership.

“So being a doctor, you are serving one person at a time, and it could be very, very impactful for somebody who needs surgery, who is dying in agony, and you go in and you repair a strangled hernia or a rotten appendix or something, and you relieve his frustration. He sleeps well, and it brings a lot of joy to your heart and everything.”

But for him, politics offers the potential for even broader transformation.

“It’s limited, because when you put it around being a politician with making decisions that are life changing for suites of the society, probably forever.”

That, he says, is the vision he grew up admiring and now lives.

“So this is just a public service ethos that was looking up.”

120,000 Nursing trainees receive 6-month allowances – Health Ministry – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that an amount of GHS 462 million has been disbursed to support the training allowances of 120,000 nursing students across the country.

This payment, which covers six months, forms part of a broader initiative by the government to provide financial support to students in Nursing Training Colleges.

In a statement sighted by Citi News on Thursday, July 17, the Ministry noted that the allowance, which was a key commitment made by President John Dramani Mahama during the recent electioneering campaign, has now been fulfilled.

“The Ministry views this development as a significant step in improving the welfare of nursing trainees and sustaining the motivation of future health professionals. It further aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen the health sector by ensuring that critical human resources receive the needed support throughout their training.”

“The Ministry extends its appreciation to the president of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama for fulfilling his promise to the nurses, as well as all other stakeholders involved in facilitating the timely release and distribution of the funds.”

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to working closely with nursing institutions to ensure the continued delivery of quality healthcare education across the country.

Burkina Faso military rulers scrap electoral commission, taking control of future polls – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Burkina Faso’s military rulers have disbanded the country’s electoral commission, calling it a waste of money.

The interior ministry will handle elections in the future, state-run RTB TV reported.

Since seizing power in September 2022, the coup leaders have initiated sweeping reforms, including the postponement of elections, which would lead to a return to civilian rule.

A nationwide vote was due last year, but the junta extended the period of transition to democracy until July 2029, allowing leader Capt Ibrahim Traoré to remain in power and free to contest the next presidential election.

The AFP news agency quotes Territorial Administration Minister Emile Zerbo as saying that the electoral commission was “subsidised” with around $870,000 (£650,000) a year.

Abolishing the commission would “reinforce our sovereign control on the electoral process and at the same time limit foreign influences”, he added.

After coming to power three years ago amid criticism that the civilian authorities were failing to deal with a growing Islamist insurgency, the military leaders have rejected the assistance of former colonial power France in favour of Russia.

Rights groups have since accused the army of targeting civilians in its attempt to quash the militants, as well as suppressing political activity and the freedom of expression.

There are also questions marks over the effectiveness of the military operation. In the first half of 2025, jihadist group JNIM said it had carried out over 280 attacks in Burkina Faso – double the number for the same period in 2024, according to data verified by the BBC.

I was raised to serve – NAPO shares deep-rooted calling to public duty

0

Running mate to the NPP flagbearer, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, says his decision to serve in politics was not an accident, but the outcome of deep values he was raised on.

One rooted in public service, sacrifice, and meaningful contribution to society.

“I would say that is how I was brought up. I was brought up in a very politically aware family with a history of decades of partisan politics or active political life. That’s how I was brought up,” he said in a revealing interview on Personality Profile with Emefa Adeti on JoyNews’ Personality Profile.

NAPO, as he is widely known, reflected on the defining influence of his upbringing. He said it was not just about being politically aware, but about the value placed on service that makes a difference.

“I was brought up to cherish one thing, public service, and not only public service, but bringing value through public service and for public service, meaning you just don’t participate. You participate in terms of regular impact,” he said.

He explained that growing up among much older relatives who had already built legacies in political and civic life shaped his mindset.

He was made to understand early that public duty meant more than just showing up; it meant proving oneself worthy of sitting at the table where real decisions are made.

“That is how I was brought up, brought up to prove myself that I can sit at the table with decision makers, and not only the elderly, but a true decision maker. So brought up by grand uncles and uncles far older than myself, whose children were far older than me, and I served all of them, so that’s how I was brought up.”

Public service, to him, became a lifelong orientation. Not just a profession, not a career, but a way of being. And even in his youth, he gravitated toward roles and organisations that reflected those values.

“So me growing up having public service has been a duty that has been imprinted in my heart, mind, and everything I do, so even deciding to belong to which associations growing up were all the associations that brought public service to the fore, like joining the Boy Scouts at a very early age, being an altar boy. Not only that, joining the Red Cross Society, going to do medicine and public service.”

From becoming a medical doctor to entering politics, Dr. Opoku Prempeh sees all of it as different expressions of the same principle—helping others.

“The only difference is that some public service duties are very, very small, personal, but really impactful, and some are large and maybe impactful.”

He shared vivid imagery from his days as a doctor—moments when saving one life meant everything to that individual and brought unmatched satisfaction.

But it is in politics, he believes, that the scale of public service expands—where decisions are made that could change entire communities and futures.

“It’s limited, because when you put it around being a politician with making decisions that are life changing for suites of the society, probably forever.”

For Dr. Opoku Prempeh, public service has never been a slogan. It has been the rhythm of his life.

Ghanaian students in Memphis face eviction, appeal to Mahama for help – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Ghanaian students studying at the University of Memphis have appealed to President John Dramani Mahama and his running mate, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, to urgently intervene in what they describe as a dire and uncertain academic crisis.

According to Fred Awuku Budu Opoku-Asamoah, Acting Leader of the Ghanaian student cohort at the university, 181 students are at risk of eviction and academic disruption due to non-payment of tuition fees.

“The current state of affairs of 181 Ghanaian students at the University of Memphis is nothing to write home about,” he said in an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Thursday, July 17.

“The management of the university, through a circular dated July 14, 2025, informed us to vacate our rooms by August 9, 2025, at 12 noon. Furthermore, our registration for Fall 2025 has already been dropped as of July for non-payment of school fees.”

The students, who are on Ghana government-sponsored scholarships, say they now face the risk of homelessness and losing their academic progress if immediate financial intervention is not provided.

“We are making a passionate appeal to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama and Her Excellency Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang to intervene to salvage the situation. As it stands, we are stranded and don’t know where to go if we are evicted come August 9,” Opoku-Asamoah pleaded.

Trump orders officials to ‘produce’ more Epstein documents after mounting pressure

0

US President Donald Trump says he’s ordered the Justice Department to produce some additional documents related to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

“Based on the ridiculous amount of publicity given to Jeffrey Epstein, I have asked Attorney General Pam Bondi to produce any pertinent Grand Jury testimony, subject to Court approval,” Trump said in a social media post.

It’s unclear whether Trump is authorising the public release of these documents or when that could come, though such action would typically require the approval of a court.

The development comes after days of sustained pressure from some of Trump’s most loyal supporters demanding further disclosures in the Epstein case.

Attorney General Pam Bondi posted minutes after the president: “We are ready to move the court tomorrow to unseal the grand jury transcripts.”

A grand jury is a group of citizens set up by a prosecutor to determine whether there is enough evidence for charges to be filed. In legal terms, it determines whether probable cause exists to believe a crime has been committed.

Grand jury decisions still must be tested before a normal jury in court, in order for a suspect to be convicted of a crime.

It is unclear whether the president’s post concerned grand jury testimony from the first set of cases concerning Epstein in the early 2000s or whether it stemmed from the federal charges brought in 2019. The BBC has inquired with the White House.

Some grand jury documents have already been released concerning the case in Florida in 2006 that led to him being charged with solicitation of a prostitute. The case was heavily criticised over the lack of serious charges and the severity of the testimony given by victims, which included multiple minors.

While campaigning last year, Trump promised to release files relating to the disgraced financier.

However, Bondi last week announced that the US justice department did not believe Epstein had a so-called client list that could implicate high-profile associates, and that he did take his own life, despite conspiracies over his death.

It came after Bondi had touted she was set to announce major revelations about the case, including “a lot of names” and “a lot of flight logs” – a nod to those who travelled with the financer or who visited his private islands where many of his purported crimes were said to have occurred.

Her reversal prompted furious response from scores of Trump’s most ardent supporters who have called for Bondi to resign after failing to produce the list, which Trump officials had previously claimed to have in their possession.

Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, who was critical of the administration’s handling of the files in recent days, praised Trump’s move.

“This is massive, this is something that we’ve been talking about for quite some time, and really a power to the grassroots,” he said.

Epstein died in a New York prison cell in 2019 as he awaited trial on sex trafficking charges. His death while incarcerated happened more than a decade after his conviction for soliciting prostitution from a minor, for which he was registered as a sex offender.

The directive came a short time after Trump said he would sue The Wall Street Journal newspaper for publishing an article alleging that a “bawdy” birthday greeting bearing Trump’s name was sent to Epstein in 2003, before the late financier was charged with sex crimes.

The letter, which the newspaper claims was sent on Epstein’s 50th birthday, has been decried by Trump as a “fake”.

In a post, Trump said that the newspaper and owner Rupert Murdoch “were warned directly” they would be sued if they printed the story, describing it as “false, malicious, and defamatory”.

According to The Wall Street Journal, a letter bearing Trump’s name “contained several lines of typewritten text framed by the outline of a naked woman, which appears to be hand-drawn with a heavy marker.”

“Inside the outline of the naked woman was a typewritten note styled as an imaginary conversation between Trump and Epstein, written in the third person,” the paper reported.

The letter, according to The Wall Street Journal, allegedly ends with the words: “A pal is a wonderful thing. Happy Birthday – and may every day be another wonderful secret.”

“These are not my words, not the way I talk. Also, I don’t draw pictures,” Trump said on social media in response to the story.

According to the newspaper, the letter was part of a compilation of birthday greetings that was put together by Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell was convicted in 2021 of helping Epstein to sex-traffick children and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Lawyer Nana Baffour Awuah, has described former President John Agyekum Kufuor as a sage and a fountain of wisdom from which Ghanaians continue to draw inspiration.

Speaking to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) on July 17, 2025, Lawyer Baffour Awuah paid glowing tribute to the former President, highlighting his immense contribution to Ghana’s democratic journey and socio-economic development.

According to the Manhyia South MP, President Kufuor’s legacy remains unmatched, as his tenure laid a solid foundation for good governance, peace, and national cohesion.

He noted that generations continue to benefit from the vision and policies implemented during Kufuor’s administration.

“Kufuor is a sage, a fountain of wisdom which we drink from,” Lawyer Baffour Awuah stated, emphasizing that the former President’s humility and dedication to nation-building serve as a guiding light for both seasoned and upcoming leaders.

He called on Ghanaians, particularly the youth and political leaders, to emulate Kufuor’s values of integrity, tolerance, and selfless service to the nation. He stressed that the country needs such timeless principles to consolidate its democratic gains and promote sustainable development.

Lawyer Baffour Awuah also urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to continue to uphold the ideals of Ex-President Kufour.

Focus on building a legacy not money – Mohammed Kudus told

0

Experienced Ghanaian coach Annor Walker has urged Mohammed Kudus to focus on building his legacy at Tottenham Hotspur rather than prioritizing financial rewards.

Speaking to Bryt FM, Walker advised the Black Stars midfielder to work harder as he faces what he describes as a “daunting challenge” at Spurs compared to his time at West Ham United.

“Kudus faces a daunting challenge at Tottenham compared to his days at West Ham United. I will urge him to work extra hard and commit himself to succeed at the club,” Walker stated.

The former Great Olympics coach stressed that Kudus should concentrate on winning trophies and elevating his status at the North London club.

“It will be prudent for him to put monetary issues aside and make a name for himself at Tottenham. He should be thinking about laurels.”

Kudus recently completed a high-profile move to Tottenham following an impressive season at West Ham, where he earned plaudits for his technical brilliance and goal-scoring ability.

As he steps into a more competitive and high-pressure environment, the advice from Annor Walker echoes the sentiments of many Ghanaian fans hoping to see Kudus shine at the highest level.

I’m angry Judy got pregnant, but she didn’t use charms – Uche Maduagwu

A photo of Judy Austin and Nollywood actor Uche Maduagwu A photo of Judy Austin and Nollywood actor Uche Maduagwu

Nollywood actor Uche Maduagwu has dismissed widespread claims that actress Judy Austin used ‘juju’ (charms) to win over Yul Edochie from his first wife, May Edochie.

According to him, Judy simply gave Yul the respect and admiration many men secretly crave in their marriages.

“Judy did not use juju on Yul, she only treated him as a king and lord and that is why he is having happiness,” Maduagwu stated in a post on Instagram.

He clarified that while he disapproves of Judy’s actions, particularly her decision to get pregnant by a married man, the situation offers a lesson for married women.

“I do not support what Judy did, everybody knows I do not support it. In fact, I am angry that she got pregnant with Yul, but this should be a lesson to married women,” he said.

The actor went on to lament the unhappiness many men experience in their homes, pointing to a shift in attitude that often happens after marriage.

“Many men are not happy in their marriages, but they cannot complain. So many of them are not treated like kings in their homes.

“Before a man marries a woman, she worships the man, but when they finally get married, the woman begins to change her character,” he added.

Maduagwu’s comments come amid continued public backlash over Yul Edochie’s controversial second marriage to Judy Austin.

It has arguably become one of the leading causes of fatalities in the country, with numerous deaths resulting from pit collapses.

In the first quarter of 2025 alone, at least five mining pit collapses have been recorded, resulting in multiple fatalities and severe injuries.

This GhanaWeb article highlights the major mining pit collapses that have occurred over the past seven months in 2025.

Diaso galamsey pit collapse

Diaso, in Ghana’s Central Region, witnessed the collapse of an illegal mining (galamsey) pit on the afternoon of Saturday, May 24, 2025.

The incident trapped an unknown number of miners underground.

Mpasatia galamsey pit collapses

A galamsey pit collapse occurred at Mpasatia in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, January 15, 2025, around 2:00 PM. The incident resulted in the deaths of two illegal miners.

Another deadly pit collapse was reported at the same mining site in Mpasatia Yaw Nkwantah on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, claiming the lives of two more individuals.

According to members of the local community, the mining concession is privately owned, with operations carried out under informal authorisation and without proper supervision.

KMA grapples with GH¢123m debt

0

Metropolitan Chief Executive of KMA, Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi Metropolitan Chief Executive of KMA, Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is reeling under a staggering debt of GH¢123,485,021.95 as of 30 June 2025, prompting the Assembly’s leadership to unveil a raft of measures to restore financial stability and improve its revenue base.

Delivering his maiden address during the first ordinary meeting of the second session of the 9th Assembly at the Prempeh Assembly Hall on Thursday, July 17, 2025, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, painted a mixed picture of the Assembly’s financial health.

He acknowledged that while the debt situation poses a significant challenge, the Assembly has also demonstrated resilience in its revenue mobilisation efforts over the past three years.

Boadi revealed that the KMA’s Internally Generated Funds (IGF) grew by nearly 22% in the 2022/2023 fiscal year and recorded an even stronger growth of almost 27% in 2023/2024.

As of June 2025, the Assembly had mobilised GH¢20.3 million in IGF and received GH¢23.2 million in grants, bringing total receipts for the period to over GH¢43.6 million.

Despite this positive performance, the Assembly’s finances have been strained by a recent court garnishee order, which has further complicated efforts to meet statutory obligations and fund critical projects.

Boadi stressed that the mounting debt, coupled with the garnishee order, underscores the urgent need for sweeping legal and administrative reforms within the Assembly.

“To tackle this debt burden, we must strengthen our financial management systems and ensure that revenue mobilisation is significantly improved,” he stated.

According to him, the Assembly is prioritising improved revenue mobilisation as a key pillar of its recovery plan. Measures under consideration include digitising revenue collection processes, sealing loopholes, and broadening the tax net to capture more ratepayers.

Boadi indicated that the Assembly will also roll out legal reforms aimed at enforcing compliance with its bye-laws to curb revenue leakages and enhance accountability.

He assured residents and stakeholders that despite the current challenges, the Assembly remains committed to delivering quality services, upgrading urban infrastructure, and driving the development agenda of the metropolis.

The MCE appealed for the support and cooperation of Assembly Members, staff, and the general public to ensure that the KMA’s revenue generation targets are met in the coming months.

He further urged citizens to honour their tax obligations and comply with local regulations to enable the Assembly to provide the needed social amenities and services for sustainable urban growth.

Boadi concluded by reiterating the Assembly’s resolve to tackle the debt challenge head-on, safeguard the Assembly’s finances, and ensure Kumasi maintains its status as a beacon of progress and development in the Ashanti Region.

According to the OSP, Dr. Abdul-Hamid is alleged to have masterminded an extortion scheme that led to the collection of GHS280,516,127.19 between 2022 and December 2024. Of that amount, the Special Prosecutor claims GHS24 million was paid directly to the former CEO, while the remainder was allegedly funneled through intermediaries and laundered using three companies.

According to the OSP, all accused persons are currently on inquiry bail pending trial. They include: Jacob Kwamina Amuah, Wendy Newman, Albert Ankrah, Isaac Mensah, Bright Bernako-Mensah, and Kwaku Aboagye Acquah.

However, Dr. Abdul-Hamid’s legal team has refuted these claims, stating that as of July 17, no formal charges had been served, nor had he been arraigned before any competent court. They described the allegations as inconsistent and lacking legal foundation.

In a statement, his lawyers noted that the original accusations—announced by the OSP at a February 2025 press conference—involved embezzlement of GHS1.3 billion from the Unified Petroleum Pricing Fund (UPPF), as well as procurement breaches.

The accusations have since been revised to extortion and money laundering, with the alleged amount reduced to GHS280 million.

“Our client denies initiating or being involved in any extortion scheme, either directly or indirectly, and further denies receiving any personal benefit from such alleged conduct,” the statement read.

The legal team also pointed to what they described as “unprecedented financial growth” during Dr. Abdul-Hamid’s tenure, highlighting that the UPPF grew from GHS53 million in 2021 to over GHS1.1 billion by the end of 2024. They argued that this growth is proof of his competence and transparency as NPA CEO.

“This is a man who served with utmost integrity and competence,” his counsel added. “He is fully prepared to contest any charges leveled against him and is confident that the truth will vindicate him.”

The upcoming court appearance marks the latest development in a case that has attracted significant public and industry attention, as it involves one of the highest-profile former executives in Ghana’s petroleum regulatory sector.

NDC’s Stephen Kofi Baidoo pledges stronger collaboration in Assin South

Baidoo has dismissed allegations that he sold the NDC’s parliamentary victory to the NPP Baidoo has dismissed allegations that he sold the NDC’s parliamentary victory to the NPP

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Assin South in the 2024 general elections, Stephen Kofi Baidoo, has expressed gratitude to traditional leaders in the constituency for their support during the elections.

Baidoo, who was accompanied by party executives from both constituency and national levels, paid a courtesy call on the chiefs to officially thank them for their role in fostering peace and participation in the electoral process.

Speaking during the visit, Baidoo noted that although the party fell short of winning the parliamentary seat, its performance showed remarkable improvement compared to previous elections.

Citing electoral statistics, he revealed that the margin between the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) reduced significantly over the years from 19.19% in 2016 to 15.87% in 2020, and now 4% in the recent polls.

This, he said, was evidence of the party’s growing support base in Assin South.

Baidoo also dismissed allegations that he “sold” the NDC’s parliamentary victory to the NPP, describing the claims as baseless and misleading.

He urged party supporters to ignore such rumors and remain united, assuring them of his unwavering commitment to the NDC and the people of Assin South.

The NDC candidate highlighted President John Dramani Mahama’s victory in the constituency’s presidential election as a sign of hope for future political gains and development.

He expressed confidence that stronger collaboration between the NDC, government, and traditional leaders would bring more developmental projects to the constituency.

Baidoo praised the traditional authorities for their significant role in shaping the political landscape and pledged to deepen relations with them in the years ahead.

“This visit is about unity and cooperation. We want to work hand-in-hand with our traditional leaders to ensure progress and better living conditions for our people,” he stated.

Albert Kwadwo Twum Boafo urges strong political commitment to fight money laundering

Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) Ghana, Albert Kwadwo Twum Boafo Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) Ghana, Albert Kwadwo Twum Boafo

Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) Ghana, Albert Kwadwo Twum Boafo, has called for strengthened political commitment and enhanced collaboration among ECOWAS member states to effectively combat money laundering, terrorism financing, and proliferation financing AML/CFT/CPF).

He made this appeal while delivering a speech at the GIABA ECOWAS Resident Representatives Seminar in Accra, on Thursday July 17, 2025.

The two-day seminar, organized by the Inter-Governmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA), is focused on “The Role of Resident Representatives in Fostering AML/CFT/CPF Compliance in ECOWAS Member States.”

Twum Boafo emphasised the crucial role of Resident Representatives in promoting the integrity of financial systems across West Africa.

He outlined four key actions Resident Representatives must prioritize:

Promote high-level political commitment in support of AML/CFT/CPF reforms.

Facilitate consistent engagement between GIABA and national authorities.

Advocate for adequate resources for national AML/CFT/CPF institutions.

Strengthen accountability mechanisms to ensure timely implementation of regional commitments.

He commended GIABA for convening the seminar, describing it as a “strategic engagement to strengthen the capacity of member states to combat financial crime.”

“AML/CFT/CPF compliance transcends mere technical obligations or the pursuit of international recognition. At its core, it is about preserving the integrity of our economies, shielding financial systems from exploitation, and preventing the flow of illicit funds that may support terrorism, organized crime, or erode the foundations of the rule of law,” he stated.

He urged Resident Representatives, who serve as the face of ECOWAS in member states, to leverage their influence to galvanize political will, foster national ownership of AML/CFT/CPF reforms, and engage proactively with national institutions to ensure effective implementation of GIABA’s recommendations.

Edwin W Harris Jr, Director General of GIABA, disclosed that GIABA had undergone significant institutional reforms since 2022, resulting in the removal of Senegal and Mali from the FATF grey list and improved compliance ratings for other member states.

He further revealed that Nigeria and Burkina Faso were scheduled for onsite FATF assessments and could be removed from the grey list by October 2025.

He attributed these successes to renewed staff commitment, improved technical capacity, and stronger collaboration with member states.

However, he cautioned that transnational crimes, including drug trafficking, human trafficking, and migrant smuggling, continued to undermine governance and economic stability in the region.

“Transnational crimes distort macroeconomics, deter investment, and worsen youth unemployment, thereby threatening national and regional security,” Harris warned.

He also announced that the GIABA Ministerial Committee would hold an extraordinary session on July 19, 2025, to deliberate on applications from non-ECOWAS countries seeking membership, citing the need for enhanced regional security cooperation.

Ambassador Perpetua O Dufu, Coordinating Director at Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, delivered goodwill remarks on behalf of the Ghanaian government.

Parliament halts consideration of Scholarship Authority Bill – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Parliament has suspended the consideration of the Ghana Scholarship Authority Bill 2025 to allow for further stakeholder engagement, following growing public concerns.

The decision comes in response to calls by the Citizens’ Coalition—a network of civil society organisations and prominent individuals—urging Parliament to halt the passage of the bill, which seeks to overhaul the national scholarship scheme under a certificate of urgency.

The suspension was announced during the clause-by-clause consideration of the bill on Thursday, July 17. Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, revealed that the Presidency had advised a pause on the legislative process to allow for more consultations.

“The Office of the President related to me some concerns that have been communicated, and therefore, Mr. Speaker, I sought the chairman’s indulgence if we can stay for further consideration as I do further consultation as I indicated,” the Minister said.

He added that engagements with relevant stakeholders were already underway.

“On Tuesday, July 15, we engaged the coalition of civil society groups in education. This Bill is a product of the Cabinet, and it was thoroughly discussed,” he added.

The Chairman of Parliament’s Education Committee, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, had earlier stated that the bill is designed to enhance transparency and improve oversight in the administration of scholarships across the country.

Despite its intentions, the bill has drawn criticism from some civil society actors who argue that rushing it through under a certificate of urgency could undermine transparency and public trust.

The decision to suspend proceedings is expected to create space for broader input from civil society, education experts, and the public before Parliament resumes consideration of the legislation.

The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Lawyer Barfour Awuah, has called on the Ghana Police Service to demonstrate professionalism and independence during the upcoming Akwatia by-election.

Speaking to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) on July 17, 2017, Lawyer Awuah emphasised the need for the security agencies to maintain law and order without bias or external influence.

According to him, incidents that marred the Ablekuma North election should not be repeated in Akwatia.

He expressed concern over reports of intimidation and misconduct during the Ablekuma North polls, stressing that such acts undermine Ghana’s democratic credentials.

“I want the Ghana Police to exhibit control and independence in the upcoming Akwatia by-election because I don’t want what happened at Ablekuma North to repeat itself again,” Lawyer Barfour Awuah stated.

The Manhyia South MP added that peaceful and transparent elections are crucial for the country’s stability and growth.

He urged all stakeholders, including political parties and supporters, to play their part in ensuring a free and fair electoral process.

Lawyer Awuah further noted that the police must not allow themselves to be manipulated by any political interest and must deal firmly with any individual or group that attempts to disrupt the election.

He commended the Electoral Commission for its efforts so far in preparing for the by-election but insisted that security arrangements must be strengthened to guarantee the safety of voters and electoral officers.

He concluded by calling on the residents of Akwatia to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities, adding that democracy thrives when citizens actively protect the integrity of elections.

The Akwatia by-election has become necessary following the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament. Political parties are gearing up for what is expected to be a keenly contested poll.

Manchester City star and Belgium international Jeremy Doku has reaffirmed his commitment to Ghana, paying a heartfelt courtesy call on Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, during his off-season visit to the country of his heritage.

The 23-year-old winger, accompanied by his father Davies Doku and other family members, was warmly received by the Minister in Accra.

Doku expressed immense gratitude for the support he continues to receive from Ghanaians both at home and abroad.

“I cannot shine unless people put me on,” Doku stated. “I’m proud of my Ghanaian roots, I speak Twi, and I want to come back more often to give back to the land of my parents.”

Kofi Adams lauded Doku as a role model for Ghanaian youth and a “global ambassador of Ghanaian excellence.”

“Though you play for Belgium, every time you step on the pitch, Ghana is mentioned,” the minister said.

“We are proud of your growth and even more inspired by your heart.”

Doku has quietly visited Komfo Anokye and Achimota Hospitals as part of ongoing charity initiatives.

According to delegation lead Lady Dentaa, the winger is determined to do more in areas such as healthcare and grassroots football development.

“He is ready to invest more in Ghana’s youth and health systems,” she revealed.

The meeting concluded with the exchange of gifts and a special invitation for Doku to attend upcoming youth football clinics organised by the Ministry.

The initiative aims to harness the talents of young athletes across the country while fostering stronger ties between Ghana and its diaspora.

Doku’s visit underscores the enduring bond between Ghana and its sons and daughters abroad and serves as an inspiration to many aspiring footballers that success abroad can – and should – lead to impact at home.

Global lithium prices collapse prompt gov’t to reassess Ewoyaa Lithium project

0

The Ghanaian government is set to revisit the terms of the Ewoyaa Lithium Agreement following a dramatic fall in global lithium prices, which has cast doubt on the viability of the project.

During a parliamentary session on Wednesday, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Amarh Kofi Buah, revealed that the sharp decline in lithium prices—once around US$3,000 per tonne—has significantly impacted the project’s prospects.

Currently, market prices have fallen below US$675 per tonne, which is the estimated production cost for the lithium concentrate according to the company’s feasibility report.

The Minister explained that this price collapse has caused major lithium producers worldwide to cut production, lay off workers, and postpone new projects, including Ghana’s own Ewoyaa Lithium operation.

In response, Barari DV Ghana Limited, the mining company granted a 15-year lease in October 2023 covering 42.63 square kilometers at Mankessim in the Central Region, has requested a revision of lease terms to prevent the project’s collapse.

The lease was submitted to Parliament in 2024 and considered by the Select Committee on Lands and Natural Resources. However, parliamentary ratification was delayed due to the adjournment for the 2024 general elections.

Now, faced with the challenging market conditions, the government has been apprised of the company’s request and is preparing to present a revised proposal to the Cabinet.

Minister Buah emphasised that the Ministry has already notified Cabinet and will soon submit a new memo outlining the proposed adjustments.

The goal is to find a sustainable pathway forward that safeguards the project and Ghana’s stake in the rapidly evolving battery metals industry.

French Ligue 1 outfit RC Lens secure signing of defender Samson Baidoo on five-year deal

Baidoo (M) joins Lens on five-year following the completion of his mandatory medical test Baidoo (M) joins Lens on five-year following the completion of his mandatory medical test

Frecnh Ligue 1 outfit RC Lens have completed the acquisition of Austrian international of Ghanaian descent Samson Baidoo, bringing an end to his three-year spell at Austrian giants Red Bull Salzburg.

Baidoo joins Lens on five-year following the completion of his mandatory medical test in North of France.

Despite Salzburg receiving offers from Premier League clubs, the Ghanaian defender opted to join Lens upon conversation with Kevin Danso, a former player of Lens.

Having made meteoric rise at Salzburg, Baidoo has now embraced a new chapter in his career by joining Lens and his expected to play a huge role for the club.

Baidoo has already established himself a solid defender in the game considering his leadership skills, proven physical strength, and technical skill.

Following the footsteps of compatriot, Kevin Danso, the 21-year-old defender is poised to contribute his quota towards the success of the club.

The Austrian-Ghanaian centre-back has been handed the jersey number 6 at the French Ligue outfit heading into his debut campaign.

Baidoo joined Red Bull Academy back in 2018 before transition to senior team, where he established himself as key cog to the squad.

With over 120 games to his name, Baidoo arrives not just as a talent but as a player who is ready to compete. RC Lens fans will be eager to see what he brings to their defence.

France ends permanent troop presence in Senegal

0

France handed over control of its last major military facility in Senegal on Thursday, marking the end of its armed forces’ long presence in the West African country and a milestone in a withdrawal from the wider region.

The commander of French forces in Africa, General Pascal Ianni, handed over a key to the military camp in Dakar during a ceremony at which a Senegalese flag was raised while military musicians played the national anthem.

“Today’s transfer of Camp Geille marks a new stage in the evolution of the partnership between our two armed forces,” Ianni told reporters. “It is a response to the Senegalese authorities’ wish to no longer have permanent foreign forces present on their territory.”

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye announced last year that France’s military bases were incompatible with Senegalese sovereignty and would have to be transferred.

The two countries agreed to complete that process by the end of the year and it began in March when France handed over two other facilities, also in Dakar.

The process has been more amicable than the departure of French soldiers from Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, where military juntas have pushed out French troops and turned to Russia for help fighting jihadist insurgencies.

Chad, an important Western ally in the fight against Islamic militants in the region, abruptly ended its defence cooperation pact with France last year, forcing its troops to withdraw.

With a reduced presence in West and Central Africa, France has said it is planning to focus on training, intelligence sharing and responding to requests from countries for assistance.

TRAINING TO CONTINUE

Ianni said French forces’ presence in Senegal dated back more than two centuries, but that a change was needed to reinvent the partnership.

General Mbaye Cisse, head of the Senegalese armed forces general staff, said the new agreement would allow Senegal to continue benefiting from training and information exchanges.

“We wish all our comrades and their families a safe return to France,” he said, adding that he hoped the long history linking the countries would provide a strong base for cooperation.

Former colonial ruler France has faced criticism for stationing soldiers in Senegal long after it gained independence in 1960.

Senegal has long demanded that Paris properly investigate a massacre in 1944 of African soldiers who fought for France in World War Two.

Kakra Essamuah was a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Kakra Essamuah was a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

The Communications Director of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kakra Essamuah, has opened up about the circumstances under which he left the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking in a snippet of an interview on Adom TV shared on social media on July 16, 2025, Kakra Essamuah indicated that he was forced out of the NPP just because of a kind gesture he made.

He claimed that he was sacked from the NPP just because he congratulated the late former President Prof John Evans Atta Mills after an impressive press conference.

“I did not leave the NPP, they are the ones who sacked me… Prof Mills held a press conference, and he was very impressive. I wrote a letter congratulating him and I was sacked because of that,” he said.

He added, “It was a very short letter, just to congratulate him.”

Okyeame Kwame hints at historic project with government

0

Okyeame Kwame

Ghanaian musician and entrepreneur Okyeame Kwame has revealed plans to embark on a landmark project with the government before the end of the current administration.

In an interview with George Quaye on Joy Prime television’s PrimeTime, the award-winning rapper said his academic commitments had delayed his engagements with state institutions, but discussions are ongoing.

“Because of school, I have been a little busy — research and literature review. I have not had the time to pay courtesy calls on [the right institutions],” he said.

When asked about his political affiliations, Okyeame Kwame clarified, “Me, you know I am ‘Made in Ghana’.”

“But I have visited KOD, we have had conversations, and hopefully, I will go and water those conversations. I think something amazing will come out. Before the end of this four years, I will do something with government and it will be historic,” he stated.

Though he did not disclose details, the announcement has sparked public interest, especially given his longstanding involvement in national campaigns.

Okyeame Kwame, known in showbiz circles as “The Rap Dacta,” has consistently used his influence to promote Ghanaian identity, culture, and responsible citizenship. He served as the face of the Ministry of Trade and Industry’s Made in Ghana campaign and has been a key advocate for health and environmental awareness initiatives, including hepatitis B screenings and climate action.

He has also been actively engaged in arts education, creative industry policy advocacy, and sustainability campaigns, earning both national and international recognition.

If realised, the proposed project could further strengthen ties between Ghana’s creative sector and state institutions, adding to Okyeame Kwame’s legacy as one of the country’s most socially engaged creatives.

Alleged missing pilgrims undertook unofficial Hajj

0

The Ghana Hajj Taskforce has provided clarification on reports that Mahama Ayariga, the Bawku Central Member of Parliament and Majority Leader, was unable to account for two pilgrims from his constituency who took part in the 2025 Hajj.

All pilgrims who traveled under the Ghana Hajj Taskforce’s official arrangements have been fully accounted for, and there have been no reports of any missing persons, the Taskforce emphasized in a statement released on Thursday, July 17, 2025.

According to the Taskforce, the two people in question were identified as Sali Hawa and Inusah Ramatu through preliminary investigations conducted in cooperation with Ghana’s Consulate in Jeddah.

The Taskforce verified that these people entered Saudi Arabia on tourist visas, which is against Saudi Hajj regulations, rather than traveling under Ghana’s legitimate Hajj quota.

In an attempt to find the people, the Majority Leader has now reported the issue to Ghana’s Embassy in Saudi Arabia, the statement further said.

“The victims are part of a wider group who sought to perform Hajj through illegal means. It is well known that several individuals who entered Saudi Arabia using non-Hajj (tourist or “Bongo”) visas have been arrested or detained by Saudi authorities,” the statement revealed.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, the Taskforce strongly advised all potential pilgrims.

“The Ghana Hajj Taskforce strongly advises all prospective pilgrims to follow the officially approved procedures for Hajj by acquiring a valid Hajj visa through accredited agents and the Taskforce. Any other route is illegal, unsafe, and outside the jurisdiction or protection of the Ghana Hajj authorities.”

The Ghana Hajj Taskforce reiterated its dedication to ensuring the security, respect, and appropriate assistance of all Ghanaian pilgrims and emphasized the importance of closely following the right procedures to prevent such issues in the future.

I am a peaceful person – Hawa Koomson claims

Mavis Hawa Koomson is a former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East Mavis Hawa Koomson is a former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East

Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has said she is not a violent person and would never endanger lives.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on July 16, 2025, she described herself as a peaceful person who would never endanger human lives.

“I have children and brothers. Why would I want to harm someone’s child? I won’t allow anyone to kill, and I certainly won’t do it myself,” she stated.

Her response follows a violent incident on July 11, 2025 at the St Peter’s Methodist Church polling station, one of 19 centres where the rerun was held due to contested results from the December 2024 general elections.

According to reports, chaos broke out after unknown individuals overpowered police officers stationed at the polling centre. Viral videos from the scene showed Hawa Koomson using pepper spray, which she claimed was an act of self-defence.

“I was surprised. I went there peacefully, but they attacked me. I had to defend myself,” she said.

Addressing previous allegations, Koomson also spoke about a 2020 incident in Kasoa where she was accused of firing a weapon.

She clarified that the shot was fired as a warning after she was attacked.

“In 2020, nobody was killed in my constituency. It was the NDC that attacked me, and I fired a warning shot in self-defence,” she explained.

She further denied any confrontation with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate during the 2024 campaign, insisting she avoided any direct contact.

“I never met with the NDC contender during the entire campaign period. I didn’t go near her or her events. So, I was surprised to hear that I was being blamed for causing confusion,” she indicated.

Although the rerun was marred by tension and controversy, Koomson maintains that she was unjustly blamed and insists her actions were purely defensive.

“I didn’t go there to fight. I was attacked, and I only tried to protect myself,” she emphasised.

OSP’s accusations baseless – Hamid’s legal team responds

Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, the former CEO of the National Petroleum Authority Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, the former CEO of the National Petroleum Authority

Lawyers representing Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, the former CEO of the National Petroleum Authority, have declared that their client is not guilty of any of the charges made against him by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

The client is prepared to challenge the accusations in court, according to HAY and Partner at Law.

“…our client denies all the allegations against him contained in the said publication and press release. That, our client is ready to contest all the allegations in the court of law and defend his good name,” they wrote in a press release dated July 17.

The news release is a response to one that the OSP previously released.

The OSP declared that it had charged Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, nine other people, and three corporate organizations in relation to a purportedly extensive corruption conspiracy worth more than GH₵280 million.

The High Court (Criminal Division) in Accra has received the charges, which include several counts of extortion and money laundering.

The accused persons are:

Mustapha Abdul-Hamid – Former Chief Executive Officer of the NPA

Jacob Kwamina Amuah – Coordinator of the Unified Petroleum Pricing Fund (UPPF) at NPA and Managing Director of three corporate entities (Propnest, Kel Logistics, and Kings Energy)

Wendy Newman – NPA staff

Albert Ankrah – Director, Kel Logistics Limited

Isaac Mensah – Director, Kel Logistics Limited

Bright Bediako-Mensah – Director, Kel Logistics and Kings Energy Limited

Kwaku Abagye Acquah – Director, Kings Energy Limited

Propnest Limited

Kel Logistics Limited

Kings Energy Limited

According to the OSP, between 2022 and December 2024, the first three accused persons, Abdul-Hamid, Amuah, and Newman, allegedly used their positions at the NPA to unlawfully extort GH¢280,516,127.19 from petroleum transporters and oil marketing companies.

The extortion scheme, which had no lawful mandate, was reportedly initiated by Abdul-Hamid and implemented by Amuah and Newman.

“Investigations further revealed that the fourth to seventh accused persons, in collaboration with a fugitive director of Kel Logistics Limited, created and Utilised Properties Ltd., Kel Logistics Ltd., and Kings Energy Ltd. as vehicles for laundering the illicit proceeds.

“The laundered funds were used to purchase and construct houses, acquire trucks for an oil distribution business, and build fuel stations, all as part of efforts to conceal and disguise the origin of the criminal proceeds.

“All 7 individuals and three companies have been charged with a total of 25 counts, including:

“Extortion by a Public Officer, contrary to Section 151 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29)

“Conspiracy to Commit Money Laundering, contrary to Section 23 of Act 29 and Sections 1(1), 1(2), and 4 of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044) Money Laundering, contrary to Sections 1(1), 1(2), and 4 of Act 1044,” part of the statement said.

The statement added, “One Osei Tutu Adjei, a director of the ninth accused company is currently at large. The accused persons have been apprehended and are set to appear on a date to be determined by the court for their pleas to be taken,

“The OSP reaffirms its commitment to investigating and prosecuting corruption and corruption-related offences without fear or favour, and urges all public institutions to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of corruption.”

Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah: Born in Liverpool, loved in Ghana

0

Liverpool, early morning, a quiet street near Anfield. A young Chantelle Boye‑Hlorkah laces her boots before sunrise. Across the road, red scarves and flags hang outside pubs. Inside her mind, visions of Wembley finals and roaring crowds fill her dreams. But it’s a Ghanaian rhythm—calm, confident, pulsing in her veins. She flicks on her headphones, hears a distant drum beat reminiscent of Accra, and steps out. In that moment, the identity of a Merseyside girl and Ghanaian pride live in harmony.

Roots by the Mersey

Born on 8 September 1995 in Liverpool, Chantelle—“Chaney” to those close—grew up kicking balls in Everton’s youth ranks before breaking into the first team in 2013. Raised in a football‑mad city, she cut her teeth in local parks, wearing Everton blue and tuning into WSL matches, dreaming big. Her Ghanaian heritage—a legacy of family stories, and festive gatherings with traditional food and music—was a parallel world. Although she spent most weekends in Merseyside, her father’s and mother’s tales of Ghana shaped her identity just as strongly.

At Everton, she rose steadily, winning the Spring Series in 2017, earning a full‑time contract, and later playing in the Women’s Super League with both Everton and Aston Villa before moving to London City Lionesses.

The transition to London City marked a new chapter: she became one of their standout performers, scoring goals and helping push the club toward promotion ambitions.

Embracing the Ghanaian badge

When Chantelle received her first Ghana call‑up in March 2025, she had already represented England at U‑19 and U‑23 levels—but her allegiance was clear.

“It’s the motherland for me,” she said, describing how wearing the Ghana badge felt like destiny. She made her debut for the Black Queens in a friendly against Senegal in April 2025, quickly netting her first goal in a friendly game against Côte d’Ivoire—an emotional milestone where she announced herself as a scorer for Ghana.

Ghanaian fans and continental breakthrough

At the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, Chantelle’s impact was immediate. Facing Tanzania in a must‑win Group C fixture on 15 July 2025, she was voted Woman of the Match after helping orchestrate a 4–1 win that sent Ghana into the quarterfinals for the first time since 2016.

She dictated play from midfield, intercepted key challenges, and sealed victory with a stunning curler—her first for the national team at the tournament—celebrating with both travelling Ghanaian supporters and local fans in the stadium alike.

In post‑match interviews, Chantelle was equal parts leader and humble team player. “I told them that we are not going to win this game without playing as a team … I am so proud of Ghana, of the fans. I am so proud to be Ghanaian,” she told CAF Online.

Her versatility—able to perform on the wing or in central midfield—gave coach Kim Björkegren tactical freedom. She embraced that flexibility. “I love playing on the wing, but I love being at the heart of the game even more,” she reflected.

Identity, diaspora and ambition

Chantelle’s narrative carries broader resonance: she is part of a growing wave of women in sport who embody diaspora pride and cultural duality. She sought to shine a new light on Ghanaian women’s football.

“My first thought was … to make Ghana be spoken about in a very, very good light in women’s football,” she said, eyeing legacy and role‑model status, particularly for young girls in both England and Ghana. Her journey signals the possibility of belonging to two worlds—Liverpool’s working‑class grit and Ghana’s vibrant cultural spirit.

Women’s sport itself—especially football—is still pushing for recognition. Chantelle’s emergence helps elevate visibility for the Black Queens and encourages wider African engagement. “I hope I can add a lot more … not just goals, but assists, leadership and encouragement,” she shared in an interview with Joy Sports after earning that Woman of the Match award.

Cultural bridge, continental dreams

As the quarterfinals approached, Chantelle’s presence seemed to galvanise Ghana’s campaign. She had become not only a playmaker but a cultural bridge—an Anfield‑born midfielder carrying Ghanaian hope across the pitch. Fans in Ghana chanted her name, but the magic of that has been through her mum.

“My mum has always kept me with my roots, even though she’s English. She’s always made the African peanut butter soup and the fufu, and eating kenkey and Gari,” she mentioned to 3Sports.

Final whistle: reflection

As Chantelle continues her international journey—and the Black Queens press on in WAFCON—it’s clear her story transcends sport. She stands at the confluence of migration, culture, and aspiration: rooted in Liverpool’s tradition, yet singing for Ghana on Africa’s biggest stage. She brings tactical intelligence, technical flair, and an inclusive spirit.

For her, the only way this tournament becomes a success is for Ghana to claim the ultimate prize on their return to the Kotoka International Airport.

“[This tournament will only be successful for me] when we take the trophy. I think we deserve it. I think we deserve the respect from African football,” she told Joy Sports.

“I want to give this continent so much respect, but I also want to gain it. The only way you gain it is by performing, by showing who we are.

“So a successful tournament for me is taking home the only thing that you can take home [the trophy].”

In the end, Chantelle Boye‑Hlorkah is more than a footballer: she is a testament to the dualities that enrich modern identity. Raised on the Mersey, embraced on the shores of the African continent; Liverpool‑born, Ghana‑adored—she remains a bridge between communities, reminding us that belonging is not limited by borders, and that football can unite the chapters of our stories.

In a statement issued Thursday, Mr Nyame expressed his condolences to the late MP’s family, calling for unity and reflection within the party.

He said his decision to enter the race was made after “extensive consultations and prayers,” and is rooted in a desire to contribute to the constituency’s development.

Scholarship Authority Bill not being rushed – Parliament’s Education Committee – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Vice Chair of Parliament’s Select Committee on Education, Joseph Kwame Kumah, has dismissed claims that the Ghana Scholarship Authority Bill 2025 is being rushed through Parliament without adequate scrutiny.

Addressing recent concerns from civil society and sections of the public in an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Thursday, July 17, he clarified that discussions around the establishment of a legal framework to govern scholarship administration in Ghana date as far back as 2017.

“The assertion that the committee is rushing through the bill may not be wholly true,” Kumah stated. “Parliament, appreciating the difficulties the [Scholarship] Secretariat was going through due to the absence of legislative backing, had an extensive discourse on the matter.”

He cited the Parliamentary Hansard (Fourth Series, Volume 97, Number 50) dated Wednesday, April 5, 2017, which recorded detailed deliberations by lawmakers on the need for reforms and the introduction of legislation to properly regulate scholarship administration in the country.

“For anybody to think that it is just today that the Minister or Parliament is rushing through a scholarship bill — the need has been there since 2017,” Kumah stressed. “Nobody is rushing any bill. Let it be corrected out there that Parliament began discussing this issue years ago.”

The Ghana Scholarship Authority Bill 2025 seeks to provide a legal framework to streamline the operations of the Scholarship Secretariat, enhance transparency, and ensure equitable distribution of scholarships across the country.

Kudus must chase glory, not just money, at Tottenham – Annor Walker

0

Kudus is a player of Tottenham Hotspur Kudus is a player of Tottenham Hotspur

Coach Annor Walker has acknowledged the big challenge facing Mohammed Kudus at Tottenham Hotspur but is urging the Black Stars star to stay focused and prove himself on the biggest stage.

Walker, who has managed top Ghana Premier League sides like Great Olympics and Samartex, says Kudus’s move from West Ham United to Spurs comes with higher expectations and tougher competition.

As such, in an interview with Bryt FM, the veteran coach called on Kudus to prioritize hardwork and club success over his wages.

“Kudus faces a daunting challenge at Tottenham compared to his days at West Ham United. I will urge him to work extra hard and commit himself to succeeding at the club. It will be prudent for him to put monetary issues aside and make a name for himself at Tottenham. He should be thinking about laurels,” he said.

The 24-year-old became Tottenham’s fifth summer signing, and the first player to move directly from West Ham to Spurs since Scott Parker in 2011.

Kudus impressed at West Ham with 13 goals and nine assists in 65 Premier League appearances after joining from Ajax in 2023.

Ghanaian business leader urges US to prioritize investment in Ghana and democratic Africa

Augustine Kanton, General Manager of Eklips Investment Ghana Ltd, has issued a strong appeal to the United States government and private sector to redirect their business and investment interests toward Ghana and other democratic African countries.

He described Ghana as a model of democratic governance on the continent and stressed the urgent need for tangible economic partnerships that reflect shared values between democratic nations.

“For years, Ghana has been celebrated as a beacon of democracy in Africa—a country that continues to lead by example in terms of governance, electoral transparency, and peaceful transitions of power,” Kanton said in a statement from Accra.

“However, it is increasingly disheartening to see that these democratic achievements have not translated into commensurate foreign direct investment, particularly from our traditional allies like the United States.”

Kanton questioned the prevailing narrative in certain Western business circles that treats African partnerships more as charity efforts than legitimate business opportunities.

According to him, this perception fails to recognize the real economic potential and investment-ready sectors in countries like Ghana.

“Many American business leaders we speak with still approach Africa, especially Ghana, as if they are doing us a favor by engaging,” he noted.

“Meanwhile, they are comfortable investing billions of dollars in regions where human rights are severely curtailed, press freedom is nonexistent, and democracy is either repressed or entirely absent.”

He pointed to the stark differences in U.S. foreign direct investment between democratic African countries and authoritarian states in other parts of the world. U.S. investment in autocratic Middle Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE remains significantly higher than in Ghana or Kenya, despite the latter offering transparent legal systems, open markets, and vibrant civil societies.

According to recent global trade reports, U.S. FDI stock in Saudi Arabia surpassed $10 billion in 2023, while democratic Ghana attracted less than $2 billion in the same period.

As the head of Eklips Investment Ghana Ltd, an emerging trade facilitation company focused on bridging global capital with African opportunity, Kanton emphasized that the time is ripe for the U.S. to rethink its approach.

He noted that Ghana offers significant prospects in technology, agriculture, agro-processing, manufacturing, and green energy. With a youthful population, improving infrastructure, and an expanding middle class, Ghana stands poised for long-term growth.

Kanton urged American investors to begin viewing Africa through the lens of partnership, innovation, and growth rather than risk and aid dependency.

“If democracy cannot yield real, visible benefits for the people who uphold it, what message are we sending to other countries watching us?” he asked.

“We cannot promote democracy globally while ignoring its economic needs at the local level. Supporting democracy means investing in it.”

Kanton stressed that U.S. businesses and government agencies that have long promoted democracy abroad must now match their rhetoric with resources.

He called for deeper collaboration in trade, technology transfer, and capacity building, adding that Ghana is not only open for business but is also one of the most secure and politically stable environments for American investors in the region.

“Ghana has always stood on the right side of history as a dependable ally of the United States,” he said.

“Now we are calling on our partners to stand with us not just politically, but economically. The future of U.S. Africa relations must be built on shared prosperity, and that begins with bold investments in democratic countries like Ghana.”

Kanton concluded by affirming that African businesses are ready and eager for strategic partnerships not handouts.

He urged the U.S. to help shift the narrative and lead a new era of mutually beneficial trade and investment that rewards democracy and unleashes Africa’s economic potential.

As part of his concluding remarks, Kanton revealed that Eklips Investment Ghana Limited is working with business partners in the U.S. state of Virginia to organize the first “Ghana–Virginia Business Summit” in early 2026.

He also announced that the company, in partnership with Liberty University, will facilitate the participation of about 50 African CEOs most of them from Ghana at the upcoming CEOs Summit in Lynchburg, Virginia, scheduled for October 15–17, 2026.

We’ll arrest perpetrators soon – Police – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that arrests will soon be made in connection with the violence that marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on Friday, July 11, 2025.

The reassurance follows the gathering of what the police describe as “vital leads” after reviewing multiple video footages and obtaining statements from victims and witnesses.

The incident, which occurred at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station, saw former Fisheries Minister, Hawa Koomson, and others reportedly attacked by unknown individuals. The chaos briefly disrupted voting activities before law enforcement restored order.

In a press release signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs at the Accra Regional Police Command, on Thursday, July 17, the police disclosed that they are actively analysing video evidence to identify all persons involved in the violent scenes.

“The command has progressed to obtain statements from complainants and witnesses to
aid in the ongoing investigations.

“The Police have also gathered vital leads and wish to assure the public that arrests will
be effected soon. Meanwhile, the victims involved in the incidents have been issued with Police Medical Report Forms,” the statement read.

The police appealed to the public to cooperate and provide credible information to aid the investigations.

Additionally, the officer captured on video assaulting a journalist during the rerun has been interdicted and is facing criminal charges for assault.

The statement reaffirmed the Police Service’s commitment to ensuring that anyone found culpable of violence, intimidation, or misconduct during the electoral process will be brought to justice.

The police urged the public to report relevant information via emergency numbers 18555 or 191.

Labour MP Bell Ribeiro-Addy sacked as UK-Ghana trade envoy over disability vote rebellion

0

Labour MP Bell Ribeiro-Addy has been removed from her role as the United Kingdom’s trade envoy to Ghana after voting against government reforms to disability benefits, prompting murmurs of unrest among the party’s left wing.

Ribeiro-Addy confirmed her dismissal in a statement on social media, describing the action as retaliation for her vote on July 9 against the Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill.

The bill, which sparked wide controversy, proposed reforms that included cuts to disability support under Universal Credit. 47 Labour MPs defied the party whip during the final vote.

She had served as trade envoy to Ghana since January 2025 and represented the Clapham and Brixton Hill constituency in South London.

She was among three trade envoys dismissed this week. The others are Rosena Allin-Khan, MP for Tooting and former UK-South Africa envoy, and Mohammad Yasin, MP for Bedford and former envoy to Pakistan.

Ribeiro-Addy, who has Ghanaian heritage, is also chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Ghana and the APPG on African Reparations.

She previously worked as a political adviser to Diane Abbott MP and has built a strong following since her election to Parliament in 2019. After recent boundary changes, she won her current seat with an increased majority of over 18,000 votes.

Meanwhile, four other Labour MPs have had the party whip withdrawn after backing an amendment to the same bill. Among them is Rachael Maskell, MP for York, who described the bill as an “omnishambles.”

Although Labour holds a commanding 399-seat majority in Parliament following its 2024 general election victory, tensions are mounting on the back benches. The government has struggled to curb spending and revive growth as unemployment creeps upward.

‘I deliberately drove to tease my ex after buying my first car’

Kuami Eugene has recalled a situation where he drove to tease his ex after buying his first car Kuami Eugene has recalled a situation where he drove to tease his ex after buying his first car

Ghanaian singer Eugene Kwame Marfo, popularly known as Kuami Eugene, has shared a humorous and dramatic memory about what he did after purchasing his first car.

In an interview with Joy Prime, as shared on X on July 17, 2025, Kuami Eugene revealed that he deliberately drove to his ex-girlfriend’s residence to flaunt his new car, even though she wasn’t home at the time.

“The funny thing is, after purchasing my first car, the first place I drove to was to inform my mom in Fadama, because I had moved out after Lynx Entertainment signed me. I went home and showed her the car, and she was excited,” he said.

He continued, “After that, I told my mom to wait for me. Her (my ex’s) mom had a salon at Darkuman, so I drove straight there just to blow the horn and cause a little commotion. She wasn’t around, but I met her mom.”

Reflecting on the experience, Kuami Eugene encouraged people in relationships to show patience and trust in their partners, especially when they are hardworking and show potential.

“I’ve always remembered that moment, even though we had both moved on. Sometimes people should just give their partners time, because they can surprise you with how far they’ll go,” he added.

Our boycott decision affected us

Justin Kodua Frimpong is the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Justin Kodua Frimpong is the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has admitted that the party’s poor showing in the recent Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun was due to a lack of preparation, stemming from an earlier decision to boycott the process.

“We were not prepared for the Ablekuma North rerun.

“The party had earlier decided to boycott the process due to certain unresolved concerns, and by the time circumstances changed, it was too late to put adequate structures in place,” he said in an interview on Wontumi TV’s morning show with host Oheneba Nana Asiedu.

Kodua explained the party’s internal challenges ahead of the vote.

He further acknowledged that the party’s delay in committing to the contest meant they missed key opportunities to rally supporters and execute a comprehensive campaign strategy.

“Had the party committed fully to contesting the rerun, we would have deployed stronger strategies and mobilized our base accordingly,” he added.

Despite the setback, Kodua expressed optimism about the party’s readiness for future contests. “We’re ready for the upcoming Akwatia election,” he assured viewers.

Timur Khizriev is recovering in hospital after being shot five times in a car park Timur Khizriev is recovering in hospital after being shot five times in a car park

PFL featherweight champion Timur Khizriev is recovering in hospital after surviving a shocking ambush that saw him shot five times by masked attackers in Dagestan, Russia.

The 29-year-old undefeated fighter was reportedly targeted on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, after stepping out of his car.

Dramatic video shared online shows two hooded gunmen sprinting towards Khizriev in a dimly lit car park before opening fire at close range.

Despite being hit multiple times, Khizriev astonishingly managed to wrestle with one of the shooters as bullets flew. He then broke free and escaped by sprinting away, leaping over parked cars to reach safety.

Khizriev’s management has since confirmed the Russian star is in hospital but said his life is not in danger. Local authorities have yet to make any arrests or reveal a motive for the brazen attack.

A rising name in the MMA world, Khizriev hails from Makhachkala and rose through the Russian domestic scene before signing with Bellator in 2022.

But it was his flawless 2024 run with the PFL that cemented his reputation, notching four straight wins to claim the featherweight crown, including a decisive victory over England’s Brendan Loughnane in the final.

As police hunt for the gunmen, fans and fighters alike are sending messages of support, hopeful that Khizriev’s remarkable fighting spirit will help him recover from his toughest battle yet, outside the cage.

Trump diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency following leg swelling – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

US President Donald Trump has been examined for swelling in his legs and has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, the White House announced Thursday, July 17.

Trump, 79, underwent a “comprehensive examination, including diagnostic vascular studies” with the White House Medical Unit, press secretary Karoline Leavitt said, reading a note from the president’s physician, Capt. Sean Barbabella.

Barbabella’s letter, which was later released by the White House, states that “bilateral lower extremity venous Doppler ultrasounds were performed and revealed chronic venous insufficiency, a benign and common condition, particularly in individuals over the age of 70.”

The examination came after Trump had “noted mild swelling in his lower legs” over recent weeks, Leavitt said.

“Importantly, there was no evidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or arterial disease” and Trump’s lab testing was all “within normal limits,” according to the letter. Trump also underwent an echocardiogram. “No signs of heart failure, renal impairment, or systemic illness were identified,” Barbabella wrote.

Chronic venous insufficiency is a condition in which valves inside certain veins don’t work the way they should, which can allow blood to pool or collect in the veins. About 150,000 people are diagnosed with it each year, and the risk goes up with age. Symptoms can include swelling in the lower legs or ankles, aching or cramping in the legs, varicose veins, pain or skin changes. Treatment may involve medication or, in later stages, medical procedures.

“It’s basically not alarming information, and it’s not surprising,” Dr. Jeremy Faust, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Harvard Medical School, told CNN.

“This is a pretty normal part of aging, and especially for someone in the overweight to obese category, which is where the president has always been. But the bigger concern … is that symptoms like this do need to be evaluated for more serious conditions, and that is what happened.”

Chronic venous insufficiency can be related to conditions like increased pressure from the heart or sleep apnea, cardiologist Dr. Bernard Ashby told CNN.

“Even though he’s diagnosed with a benign condition, venous insufficiency, by itself doesn’t necessarily mean it’s benign. The question is, what’s causing the venous insufficiency? And so I would want to know whether or not he has any evidence of, again, increased pressures in the heart or increased pressures in the lungs, which can be contributing to that, and if so, what is the primary cause of that?”

Trump’s doctors were “covering all their bases” by screening him for heart failure, increased pressure and other conditions, he said.

Age, obesity and inactivity can all lead to the condition. “If a person is older, a person is overweight, a person is not engaging in regular physical activity or exercise, if a person is sitting or standing for prolonged amounts of time, you can get chronic venous insufficiency,” Dr. Chris Pernell told CNN.

“And while it is not life-threatening, it can be debilitating,” she added.

Leavitt later added that the president was experiencing “no discomfort.”

The press secretary also addressed bruising that has appeared on the back of the president’s hand, which she attributed to his “frequent handshaking,” plus his use of aspirin.

“This is consistent with minor soft tissue irritation from frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin, which is taken as part of a standard cardiovascular prevention regimen,” Barbabella’s letter says.

The letter concludes that “President Trump remains in excellent health.”

Trump will become the nation’s oldest president during his second term.

Wimbledon attracted a record-breaking 69.3 million digital video views for BBC Sport over the two-week competition.

Audiences viewed the matches through BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website and the BBC Sport app.

It is a considerable increase from the 50.1 million online requests in 2024, which had previously dropped from 54.3 million in 2023.

The men’s singles final between rivals Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner had a peak TV and online audience of 8.8 million, with nearly all – 8.3 million – watching on BBC One.

In the women’s final, 4.1 million tuned into BBC One to watch Iga Swiatek win her first Wimbledon title with a commanding victory over Amanda Anisimova.

Alex Kay-Jelski, director of BBC Sport, said: “This year’s record-breaking digital figures for Wimbledon are testament to the huge appeal of the sport among audiences and the power of digital innovation to bring both new and existing fans closer to the action than ever before.

“The way people are following Wimbledon is changing, but that is exciting for us as we look to tell the best stories in different ways.”
