Police restore order after Aboso disturbance

0

Police have restored calm in Aboso near Tarkwa in the Western Central Region following a disturbance that erupted during a swoop operation on Tuesday, December 31, 2025.

The Western Central Regional Police Command said the operation was part of its security measures ahead of the 31st December crossover night and was aimed at clearing the area of suspected drug dealers, users, and traffickers. About 70 suspects were arrested during the exercise.

According to the police, while officers were preparing to transport the suspects to the station, an individual identified as Chairman Dela approached the team to intervene. After being informed about the purpose of the operation, he later addressed the crowd.

The situation reportedly escalated when some members of the crowd became hostile, allegedly arming themselves with guns, cutlasses, machetes, and stones. Police say shots were fired and stones hurled at officers, forcing the team to tactically withdraw from the area to prevent further escalation.

The police indicated that officers were pursued from the Gangway area to the Aboso Market, and some personnel discharged their weapons in self-defence during the chaos.

In the course of the disturbance, two persons sustained gunshot wounds, while another was found unconscious with blood oozing from the back of his head. He was rushed by police to the Apinto Government Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Calm has since been restored, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

In a separate account to the media, Louis Afful, Deputy Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation for the Prestea-Huni-Valley Municipality, said he witnessed two individuals being shot during clashes between police and community members. The victims were reportedly taken to the Tarkwa Government Hospital morgue. Earlier reports indicated that tensions in Abosso arose as residents protested issues linked to illegal mining activities.

The police command has urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, assuring residents that further updates will be provided as investigations continue.

One person has been confirmed dead, while two others sustained gunshot injuries following a violent disturbance that erupted during a police swoop operation at Aboso in the Western Central Region on Tuesday, December 31, 2025.

The Western Central Regional Police Command has said that the incident occurred during a security operation aimed at flushing out drug peddlers, users, and traffickers ahead of the 31st December crossover night activities.

According to the police, about 70 suspected drug dealers and users were arrested during the exercise. However, tension escalated when a man identified as Chairman Dela attempted to intervene as officers prepared to transport the suspects to the police station.

Police said the individual later addressed a gathered crowd, which suddenly turned hostile. Some members of the crowd allegedly armed themselves with guns, cutlasses, machetes, and stones, firing shots and pelting police personnel with stones.

To avoid further escalation, the police team tactically withdrew from the area but was pursued from the Gangway area to the Aboso Market. During the pursuit, some officers, acting in self-defence, discharged their weapons.

In the ensuing chaos, two youths sustained gunshot wounds, while another male youth was found unconscious with blood oozing from the back of his head.

‘Attempt anything nasty and we will come after you’ – Police Commander warns criminals

He was rushed by police to the Apinto Government Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police say calm has since been restored in Aboso, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

The Western Central Regional Police Command has appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies, assuring residents that further updates will be communicated as investigations progress.

Two dead in family land dispute

0

The Upper West Regional Police Command has confirmed the death of two persons and the arrest of two suspects following a violent clash between members of a family over a disputed piece of land in the region.

Speaking in an interview, the Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, described the incident as “very unfortunate” and disclosed that the clash escalated rapidly before police intervention.

“This is a very unfortunate situation here. We all have the information that just the latest part of the day yesterday, there was a clash of the family over a piece of land,” DCOP Yiribaare stated.

According to him, upon receiving information about the disturbance, the police immediately deployed their Quick Response Team (QRT) to the scene. However, by the time officers arrived, the situation had already deteriorated.

“On arrival, we discovered that the clash had gone too far, resulting in the death of one person right on the spot,” the Regional Commander revealed.

He further explained that another victim found unconscious at the scene was rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention but later died, bringing the total number of fatalities from the incident to two.

“One that we met at the scene was also unconscious and was immediately rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, he also passed,” he added.

DCOP Yiribaare noted that the police have since commenced full-scale investigations into the incident, with the cooperation of residents in the area.

“The general public has been very cooperative since we started. We have processed the crime scene, and the management team covered and processed every particle that mattered in the issue,” he said.

As part of ongoing investigations, the police have arrested two suspects in connection with the clash. According to the Regional Commander, one suspect is currently receiving medical treatment under police guard, while another was arrested in the early hours of the morning and remains in police custody.

“So far, one person is on admission but under police guard as a suspect, under arrest. We have one other individual who was also arrested in the later part of the dawn of this morning and is also in detention,” DCOP Yiribaare confirmed.

He assured the public that the police are committed to ensuring justice is served.

“We are leaving no stone unturned in getting to the bottom of it and ensuring that justice takes its own course,” he stressed.

Beyond the investigations, the Regional Police Commander used the opportunity to appeal to the affected family and the general public to resolve land and other disputes through peaceful and lawful means.

“I want to encourage the family to continue to revert to the police for every other issue surrounding this land or to the locals for a very peaceful resolution of the matter,” he advised, adding that violence only undermines peace and development.

He emphasized that peaceful dispute resolution is key to maintaining stability in the Upper West Region.

“In matters like this, we should try to use peaceful means rather than violence. In so doing, we continue to preserve the peace and stability of the region and also create a safer community for development and social activities to go on,” DCOP Yiribaare said.

On the reopening of the affected road, which was temporarily closed for security and investigative purposes, the Regional Commander indicated that access would be restored once outstanding processes are completed.

“We are still processing a few issues and once that is done, we should be able to open it up,” he assured.

Police pick up key suspect in daylight robbery at Adabraka jewellery shop after one year investigation

0

The Ghana Police Service has recorded a series of major operational successes in the fight against violent crime, armed robbery and the proliferation of illegal firearms, following sustained intelligence-led operations conducted between November and December of 2025.

The operations form part of a broader national strategy to protect lives, secure property, and maintain public safety across the country.

Briefing the media on Wednesday (December 31, 2025) in Accra, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, announced the arrest of a key suspect in connection with the daylight robbery at a jewellery shop at Adabraka in Accra, where GH¢7.5 million from a gold transaction was stolen while being conveyed to a bank in November 2024.

The suspect, identified as Salim Mohammed, also known as Fariwata, according to the CID boss was arrested on November 20, 2025 at a hospital in Ashaiman, where he had gone to seek medical attention after months of intelligence-led surveillance.

Preliminary investigations, she said,  revealed that the suspect and his accomplices, armed with AK-47 assault rifles, intercepted the victim’s vehicle, fired multiple shots to scare away onlookers, injured the driver and escaped with the cash.

COP Donkor said the police were currently pursuing the remaining suspects and working to recover the stolen money.

Phone snatching, robbery syndicate

In a related development, she said the CID has arrested five members of a notorious phone snatching and armed robbery syndicate operating in parts of Accra and Tema.

The suspects, Seth Tetteh Noi, also known as Wonder; Emmanuel Selasi Monyekor; Abdul Fatao Sameed; Karam Fatao; and Abdul Jamel Mohammed, were arrested at their hideouts between December 24 and 26, 2025, following intelligence-led operations.

COP Donkor said the gang had been involved in street, residential, and workplace robberies across Oyibi, Appolonia, Spintex, Airport Residential Area, East Legon Hills, Zenu Atadeka, Ashaiman and Kasoa.

She said searches conducted during the operations led to the recovery of a pistol and a pump-action gun believed to have been used in several robberies.

She added that investigations further linked the syndicate to a violent robbery attack on mourners attending a funeral at Ashaiman Under Bridge, where cash and valuables worth over GH¢200,000 were stolen.

COP Donkor disclosed that further intelligence enabled police to foil another planned robbery at the Ashaiman China Mall, leading to additional arrests and the disruption of the gang’s activities.

Eight arrested

COP Donkor also revealed that the police had also arrested eight suspects in connection with a violent residential robbery at Appolonia in the Greater Accra Region.

The suspects, Selasi Ofori, 26; Bismark Gati, 23; Believer Meketor, 22; Michael Obeng, 22; Sadik Abukakar, 25; Dawudu Fatawu, 28; Samuel Ofori, 21; and Destiny Idegbe were arrested on November 8, 2025, following intelligence-led investigations.

She said the suspects attacked residents in their homes, ransacked rooms, and made away with valuable items.

Exhibits retrieved, she said, included helmets, a cutlass, boots, and a body armour vest, which were being used to assist ongoing investigations.

Fake soldier arrested with weapons

In another operation, the Director General of the CID said the police arrested a suspect for impersonating a soldier and using the disguise to facilitate criminal activities.

According to her, the suspect had been operating in Ashalaja in the Greater Accra Region, as well as parts of Ashanti, Bekwai and Kyebi in the Eastern Region.

She said he was arrested while dressed in full military camouflage.

According COP Donkor, a search on him uncovered two unregistered foreign pistols, one live 9mm round, two live AK-47 rounds, a military camouflage bag, a bayonet, a Huawei Gota set and a pair of handcuffs bearing serial number 46446.

She said the suspect was in custody as investigations continue to trace his accomplices and the source of the weapons.

Arms dealer arrested

She said the police also arrested an arms dealer in Accra on December 29, 2025, following intelligence indicating that a man intended to sell an assault rifle.

The suspect, identified as Abdulai Ibrahim, was arrested at Sodom and Gomorrah at about 7:45 p.m. while attempting to sell a CZ rifle for GH¢35,000.

During interrogation, COP Donkor said he admitted to previously purchasing and transporting seven pump-action guns to Wulensi in the Northern Region and disclosed that he sourced the weapons from another arms dealer operating around the UTC area in Accra.

She said efforts were ongoing to dismantle the wider illegal arms supply network.

Emissions Levy had no impact on air pollution, research reveals

0

It was rolled out with fanfare — hailed as Ghana’s bold answer to rising carbon emissions. But barely a year later, the Emissions Levy is gone. Repealed quietly. Almost unnoticed. And now, new research suggests it may never have worked at all.

Each year, at least 32,000 Ghanaians die from exposure to fine particulate matter, according to the Health Effects Institute. The deadliest sources of this pollution remain stubbornly familiar: vehicle exhaust and open burning.

By 2018, Accra’s central business district alone was emitting more than four million tonnes of carbon dioxide — far beyond what city planners had anticipated.

Alex Johnson, Director of Transport at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, says the scale of emissions came as a shock.

“In 2018, when we first launched our climate action plan, the projection was to achieve a reduction that sees emission levels at about 4 million metric tons in 2035. But by 2021, when Google, Environmental Insights Explorer made some of these data resources available, we realized that we were already clocking 4 million metric tons of emissions within a certain sector of the Accra space, especially towards the CBD.” – Alex Johnson, Director of Transport at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.

Associate Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Dr. Raphael Arku said the warning signs were already clear.

“We have discovered that there are about 4 to 6 major sources that are polluting the air in Accra. It includes traffic, waste burning, gas particles, and even construction, among other things, contributing. Even sea salt, because Accra is along the ocean.”

Government’s response was the Emissions Levy

Passed in December 2023 and implemented in February 2024, the levy imposed annual charges of GH 75 to GH₵300 on petrol and diesel vehicles, depending on engine size. Officials said it would cut emissions and fund environmental action.

But skepticism followed almost immediately. Drivers questioned its purpose.

“The government could have engaged the ordinary drivers on this as well,” a driver said. A passenger also said that “we as passengers have little to say on this issue because we have no choice.”

From lawmakers in Parliament, especially the minority.

“They have signed on to an IMF conditionality which compels government to raise the threshold of the revenue as a percentage of GDP to a certain level and so they are looking at every means to tax the people of Ghana” – John Jinapor (who at the time was a member of the Finance Committee in Parliament).

And even from clean air advocates, who questioned the levy’s real intention.

“If you want to use the emissions levy as a tool to reduce pollution, the way you target it is different. What I think we were trying to introduce in Ghana, in my humble opinion, and this is my personal opinion, I thought was more of a revenue generation tool.” – Desmond Appiah.

Many argued that the levy — though framed as an environmental measure — functioned more as a revenue pipeline than a true deterrent to pollution.

So when Parliament repealed the levy in 2025, it came as little surprise. What did surprise many, however, was what the data revealed next.

Atmospheric scientist at Columbia University, Dr. Daniel Westervelt, who has spent years tracking Ghana’s pollution trends, set out to measure the levy’s real impact during the single year it was in force.

His findings were blunt.

“We didn’t find a whole lot of specific policies that were targeting air pollution, but we did find things like this emissions levy, which wasn’t maybe designed purely to tackle air pollution, but had it as one of the possible co-benefits,” Dr Westervelt said.

Using satellite data and ground-level sensors, Westervelt found the levy delivered almost nothing. Transport-related pollution remained virtually unchanged — with no measurable drop in fine particulate matter, even outside the harmattan season.

“We do have what we’re calling the Gridded Africa Surface Pollution Dataset, or GRASP for short. And it also goes back all the way to the year 2005 up to the end of 2024. We compared February 2024 through the rest of 2024 to previous years. So we compared February 2024 to February 2023 to February 2022 to February 2021, etc.

“That way, you can sort of control for the fact that there are seasonal changes in the PM 2.5.  The other thing that we did is we looked at it in different months. So it’s not just February. It’s all the months of the year.

“So we looked at, for example, June of 2024 and compared that to June of 2023, 21, 22, etc. So we were able to actually look at non-harmattan periods as well to see if there were any changes that would be completely independent of the harmattan. And even in those cases, there weren’t any statistically significant changes in PM 2.5 that could be attributed just to the emissions levy.”

Over the period, vehicle numbers continued to rise, fuel consumption did not slow, and no behavioural shifts were recorded among drivers.

On the streets of Accra, some drivers told JoyNews the levy never changed how they drove, serviced their engines, or thought about pollution.

“There was no need for the levy. The smoke is nothing,” one driver said.

“Government should give our money back,” another added.

“You see somebody’s exhaust fumes, the way the smoke is coming out, you yourself, you will not like” – another driver at the Circle bus terminal said.

“How can you say that you are collecting air pollution tax? How? No!,” another driver said.

Meanwhile, research shows tailpipe emissions in Accra have remained largely unchanged for nearly two decades, according to Dr. Raphael Arku, Associate Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

“What we have found is that the proportion that is coming from traffic remains the same. It hasn’t changed over the last 20 years. So, how much traffic is contributing to air pollution in Accra has remained stable.”

Fresh research from PSS Urbania, led by Dr. Joseph Ayitio, is now helping to map pollution hotspots across parts of Accra — revealing where exposure is highest.

“Across the 30 MMDAs, the very common causes of pollution, which I’m sure would not be shocking to you, had to do with transportation, which was a major contributor to the kind of quality, poor quality that is emitted, that contributes to poor air quality. And then burning of firewood and open burning of rubbish was another major activity that was identified across most of the local authorities. Across the 52 sites, most sites had levels below the EPA and then the World Health Organization levels, except four major sites. And these were Ayawaso- North, South and Lada Dadekotopon Municipality.” – Dr. Joseph Ayitio.

Researchers insist the solution is still within reach — but only if Ghana targets the real sources.

“Those responsible can target these two sources: traffic, biomass burning and then waste burning. When we do that, we can cut down air pollution levels by 50% or even more than 50% in Accra,” said Dr Arku.

“So certain African countries have put into place, you know, restrictions on how old and sort of polluting the vehicle that you can import from Europe or the US or Canada or, you know, another wealthy country.

“They’ve put some restrictions on that to help, you know, reduce the local pollution from these sorts of dirty old cars. Other things would be, you know, enhancing the level of public transportation. This would mean buses, trains, even things like bicycles and electric scooters and all those kinds of things. Those are sort of the new emerging frontier of clean travel.

“And then the last thing that I would say really has nothing to do with vehicles, but cleaner cooking fuels. And the challenge with the cleaner cooking fuels is they have to be affordable. As I was kind of mentioning earlier, folks that are cooking with wood or charcoal are doing so because it’s cheap.” – Dr. Daniel Westervelt

The repeal of the Emissions Levy ends a chapter — but not the crisis.

Clean-air advocates say a new conversation must begin: not about taxing emissions, but about actually reducing them.

This story was a collaboration with New Narratives. Funding was provided by the Clean Air Fund, which had no say in the story’s content.

Police intensify patrols ahead of new year celebrations

0

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of comprehensive security arrangements nationwide ahead of New Year activities on Wednesday, December 31.

In a press briefing, Staff Officer PAD, DSP Richard Mensah, said officers have been strategically deployed across communities, major towns, entertainment centres, and key highways to ensure public safety and maintain law and order during the celebrations.

He added that patrols have been intensified, with traffic officers stationed at major intersections to manage vehicular movement and ensure smooth traffic flow. Special security measures have also been put in place at churches, event grounds, and other locations expected to attract large crowds for Watch Night services and New Year events.

DSP Mensah urged religious and community leaders to conduct their activities responsibly and avoid creating fear or panic.

“We would also like to remind religious leaders and community leaders to conduct their activities to avoid creating fear and panic,” he said.

The Police also appealed to the public to cooperate with officers on duty, remain vigilant, and look out for neighbours, especially those away from home during the festivities. Suspicious activity should be reported immediately via emergency numbers 0302773906, 18555, 191, or 112.

Security arrangements for 31st December activities

0

The Ghana Police Service wishes to assure the public that adequate security measures have been put in place across the country to ensure the safety and protection of all persons during activities marking Wednesday, 31st December, as Ghanaians usher in the New Year.

Police personnel have been deployed, and patrols intensified in communities, major towns, entertainment centres, and along key highways to ensure safety and security while maintaining public order.

Traffic officers will be deployed and positioned at major intersections to ensure smooth traffic flow and facilitate movement of people and vehicles.

Special security arrangements have also been made at public gathering venues, such as churches, event grounds and other locations expected to attract large crowds.

The Service calls on the public to cooperate fully with officers on duty, to remain vigilant, and to be each other’s keeper by looking out especially for neighbours who might not be at home.

“Promptly report any suspicious activities to the police on 0302773906, 18555, 191, or 112 for immediate action,” they tasked the public.

Cadres call for ‘shoot to protect’ approach in galamsey fight

0

The United Cadres Front (UCF), an affiliate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has condemned attacks on the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and called on the Government to adopt what it described as a “shoot to protect” approach, rather than a “shoot to kill” strategy, in the fight against illegal mining.

Speaking during the 44th Anniversary celebration of the 31st December Revolution in Ada on Wednesday, December 31, UCF Chairman Shine Gaveh expressed concern over the growing menace and lamented the complicity or silence of some traditional leaders, security personnel, and faith-based organisations in allowing illegal mining to continue.

“Our chiefs, state actors, security personnel, civil and faith-based organisations, political party functionaries, and communities are either complicit or implicit in the immoral act of illegal mining. The shameless fact is that those who have been commissioned to join NAIMOS and allied agencies to bring this existential threat to a close are callously being attacked by visibly organised gangs with impunity,” he said.

“As the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, we urge the President of the Republic to take the most decisive onslaught beyond the seeming complacency on the recalcitrant galamseyers. We are not calling for ‘shoot to kill,’ but rather ‘shoot to protect’ our forest reserves and rivers,” Gaveh added.

He further cautioned ministers of state, heads of departments, and chief executives of state agencies to exercise restraint and decorum in their public comments.

“There seems to be a rush to respond to any deliberate or unholy agenda set by the micro minority and other anti-state elements to attract public ridicule of government appointees. We therefore caution that the Ministers of State, Heads of Departments, and Agencies weigh their public discourses to prevent the hawks from diving on chickens,” he warned.

Two feared dead during galamsey protest at Abosso

0

Two people are feared dead after police intervention during a protest at Abosso near Tarkwa in the Western Region on Wednesday, December 31, 2025.

The incident occurred as residents demonstrated against the alleged transfer of a gangway illegal mining (galamsey) site to Chinese operators. The protest reportedly escalated when police moved in to disperse the crowd.

The Western Central Regional Police Command in Tarkwa revealed that the deaths had not yet been officially confirmed as of the time of reporting.

However, the Deputy Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for the Prestea-Huni-Valley Municipality, Louis Afful, said he personally witnessed the shooting.

“This morning a Police Patrol Squad came to town to fire warning shots. As I speak, two people have lost their lives. The community members have also blocked the road,” he told Accra-based Channel One News.

According to Mr. Afful, the bodies of the two victims have been transported to the Tarkwa Government Hospital mortuary. Tension remains high in the area, with residents reportedly mounting roadblocks as anger and fear spread through the community.

Police investigations are expected to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, as calls grow for clarity and accountability over the use of force during the protest.

Haruna Mohammed claims Ghana Audit Service undermined

0

The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has alleged that the Ghana Audit Service is being undermined, rendering it ineffective in the fight against corruption.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse during the 2025 Year in Review discussion on Wednesday, Mr. Mohammed said budgetary constraints and reduced allowances have weakened the institution, making it vulnerable to external influence.

“The biggest corruption-preventing institution in Ghana is the Ghana Audit Service. Today, it is being relegated to the background. Budget lines meant for their operations and remuneration have been sidelined.

“If you make the Auditor General poor, you suffocate the office, and you cannot expect meaningful outcomes,” he stated.

Mr. Mohammed further criticised the government of President John Dramani Mahama for allegedly discontinuing several high-profile corruption cases, including the Saglemi project and cases involving former Bank of Ghana officials, claiming that such actions undermine efforts to hold public officials accountable.

“The government has filed nolle prosequi in seven critical cases, including SSNIT-related matters. Every prominent case we were pursuing for causing financial loss to the state has been discontinued,” he added.

By Perdita AGYARKO

In a press briefing held at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters on Wednesday, 31 December 2025, Deputy Commissioner of Police (CID) Ms. Lydia Yaa‑Ko Donkor outlined a series of intelligence‑led operations that have resulted in multiple arrests and the disruption of illegal weapons networks across the country.

The briefing highlighted six key actions:

1. *GH₵7.5 million daylight robbery* – Salim Mohammed, alias “Fariwata,” was detained on 20 November at a hospital in Ashaiman. He and armed accomplices had seized cash from a jewellery shop in Adabraka. Investigations continue to track the remaining suspects and recover the stolen funds.

Police grabbed 16 suspected criminals in Accra

0

Sixteen suspected individuals have been arrested by the Ghana Police Service (GPS) for their involvement in various criminal cases recorded in the capital city between November and December 2025.

Some of the criminal cases for which the suspects were arrested included daylight robbery, phone snatching, residential robbery, impersonation of a military officer, and arms dealing and disruption of illegal weapons supply.

The arrest of the suspects was confirmed by the Director General of the Criminal Investigative Department (CID) of the GPS, Commissioner of Police (COP) Lydia Yaako Donkor at a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday.

According to her, the suspects were arrested at their various hideouts after months of intelligence led and coordinated operations by the GPS.

She noted that one of the suspects was arrested in connection with a daylight robbery attack on a jewellery shop at Adabreka where an amount of GHC 7.5 million proceeds from a gold transaction was being conveyed to the bank while five were also arrested for their involvement in notorious phone snatching and armed robbery syndicates within Accra and Tema.

Additionally, COP Donkor said that eight of the suspects were also arrested for residential robbery in areas such as Airport residential area, Oyibi, and Spintex, where they made away with valuable items of the victims.

Furthermore, she noted that preliminary investigations and search  carried out by the GPS led to the recovery of pistols, a pump action gun, AK47 assault rifles, helmets, cutlasses, boots, body armour vests, a military camouflage bag, a bayonet, Hauwai gota set, and a pair of handcuffs with serial number 46446.

COP Donkor said that Abdulai Ibrahim, the suspect involved in arms dealing and disruption of illegal weapons supply, had been trafficking firearms to the Northern Region.

According to her, the suspect was arrested at the point of transaction at Sodom and Gomorah in Accra, where he had directed a potential buyer of a CZ rifle to be sold at  GHC 35,000.

She said that the suspect, during interrogation, disclosed that he previously purchased and transported seven pump action guns to individuals in Wulensi.

The suspect, COP Donkor, said that he sourced the weapons from an arms dealer who operated around UTC in Accra.

Additionally, she noted the CID had secured the conviction of Pergringo Braimah Abubakar Sadick, aged 54, for the unlawfully discharge of firearm in public.

This, COP Donkor said, was after the Adenta Circuit Court One, had revoked the firearm of the convict and ordered its confiscation the state.

She also reaffirmed the commitment of the GPS to enforce the law and ensure public safety by taking firm action on the unlawful use of firearms.

COP Donkor further urged the citizenry to surrender illegal firearms or unregistered firearms to the appropriate authorities, noting “the GPS will not relent in its effort to fight the proliferation of firearms. “

Enhanced DStv value packages still in force

0

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has confirmed that the increased DSTV subscription value packages in Ghana, implemented on October 1, 2025, remain in effect.

In a statement dated December 31, the NCA said the stakeholder committee, chaired by the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations (MoCDTI), continues to monitor the impact of the pricing and value adjustments.

The NCA noted that Ghanaians have largely responded positively, resulting in a significant rise in DSTV subscriptions.

The statement emphasised that the committee, which includes representatives from MoCDTI, NCA, and Multichoice, is also collaborating with the Cybersecurity Authority and other agencies to address the growing problem of illegal streaming.

According to the statement, pay-TV piracy leads to losses in tax revenue, reduced earnings for the creative industry, and exposes consumers to cyber threats such as malware and phishing.

“The working group will continue its engagements to ensure that mutual commitments to the objectives are attained,” the NCA said.

The statement reaffirms the regulator’s position that DSTV’s value-added packages “remain in force” while urging the public to remain vigilant against illegal streaming platforms.

Ghana colorectal cancer patients face low survival rates, KNUST study finds

0

More than six out of every 10 colorectal cancer patients in Ghana die within five years of diagnosis, according to a new study by researchers at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

The study, published in BMC Gastroenterology, analysed clinical outcomes for 281 patients treated between 2016 and 2022 at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, one of Ghana’s largest referral centres.

It found a five-year overall survival rate of 39.3%, meaning roughly 60% of patients died within five years of diagnosis,  far below survival rates reported in high-income countries.

The research, led by Tonnies Abeku Buckman of KNUST’s Department of Molecular Medicine, identified late-stage diagnosis as the strongest predictor of poor survival.

“Most patients are still coming in very late, when treatment options are limited and outcomes are poor,” Buckman said.

Nearly 70% of patients were diagnosed at advanced stages of the disease, with almost one in three presenting with stage IV colorectal cancer. Patients diagnosed at this stage had a five-year survival rate of just 16.4%, compared with more than 90% among those diagnosed at stage I.

Median overall survival across all patients was 45 months, with survival declining steadily each year after diagnosis.

The study also found that more than a quarter of patients were under the age of 45, raising concerns that existing screening guidelines may be failing to capture younger, at-risk populations.

Several factors were independently associated with poorer survival outcomes, including cigarette smoking, having multiple chronic conditions such as diabetes or hypertension, and the use of herbal medicine alongside conventional cancer treatment. Patients who reported using herbal remedies had a median survival of 26 months, compared with 50 months for those who did not.

Colorectal cancer incidence has been rising steadily in Ghana, driven by urbanisation, changing diets and longer life expectancy, yet screening coverage remains limited despite national guidelines introduced more than a decade ago.

Buckman said expanding screening programmes and improving access to timely diagnosis and treatment could significantly reduce preventable deaths. “Early detection changes everything,” he said. “When we find the disease early, survival improves dramatically.”

The authors called for stronger national cancer control strategies focused on public awareness, earlier diagnosis and improved referral pathways.

They also highlighted the need for targeted funding to support further research into how diet, body composition and physical activity influence colorectal cancer prevention and survivorship in Ghana, areas they said remain under-studied despite their growing relevance to cancer outcomes.

Scores of coordinators across the 11 constituencies in the Upper West Region have announced their defection from Kennedy Ohene Agyapong to Dr. Bryan Acheampong, following what they described as a successful campaign tour by Dr. Acheampong across the Northern regions.

The decision was made public on Tuesday, December 30, at Gwollu during Dr. Acheampong’s engagement with delegates in the Sissala West Constituency.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Sidik Marikz, Abdul Moomin Haruna, Tahiru Tampoure Ibrahim, and Mubashiru Nuhu said they initially believed Kennedy Agyapong represented the change the New Patriotic Party (NPP) required.

However, they explained that after careful reflection and listening to Dr. Acheampong’s vision during his tour, they became convinced that he is better positioned to unite the party, rebuild its structures, and adequately resource it ahead of future elections.

The coordinators cited Dr. Acheampong’s disciplined message, practical policy proposals, and commitment to grassroots empowerment as key reasons for their decision, adding that these qualities resonate strongly with party members in the region.

They subsequently declared their unconditional support for Dr. Acheampong, a move that was greeted with loud applause from delegates, reflecting the growing momentum behind his campaign in the northern regions.

Lawyer Questions GoldBod Explanations Over IMF Reported Losses

Lawyer Questions GoldBod Explanations Over IMF Reported Losses
Goldbod

Private legal practitioner and policy analyst Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers has expressed strong confidence in International Monetary Fund (IMF) data indicating a $214 million operational loss linked to transactions between the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), describing local explanations of the losses as hurried and unconvincing.

Brako-Powers criticised what he describes as inconsistent and shifting explanations by GoldBod leadership, particularly Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi, over the reported losses. Speaking on TV3’s Big Issues, the lawyer questioned the credibility of GoldBod’s response to the IMF findings.

The IMF noted in its fifth review report, “In 2025 through end Q3, losses from the artisanal and small scale doré gold transactions component of Gold for Reserves (G4R) have reached US$214 million (0.2 percent of GDP), mostly on trading losses but also on GoldBod off takers’ fees”.

However, speaking on TV3’s Key Points program on Saturday, December 27, 2025, Gyamfi clarified that the IMF’s reported figure of a US$214 million loss relates to accounting assessments concerning the Bank of Ghana’s Gold for Reserve programme, and not to the financial performance of the GoldBod. He stressed that at no point did the IMF state that the Ghana Gold Board itself had incurred losses.

Gyamfi disclosed that, based on unaudited financial statements, GoldBod is expected to declare an income surplus of not less than 600 million cedis for the year 2025. He explained that GoldBod’s role in 2025 was limited to buying gold locally, testing its quality, and exporting it for the Bank of Ghana. He said the sale and trading of the gold is the sole responsibility of the Bank of Ghana.

Addressing the IMF’s assessment of losses under the Gold for Reserve programme, Gyamfi said the matter relates to unresolved accounting and financial reporting treatments, which the Bank of Ghana is currently discussing with the IMF and its external auditors.

Member of Parliament for Manso Nkwanta, Tweneboa Kodua Fokuo, has described the response by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board as unfortunate. Gyamfi has indicated that he will provide a detailed response to the IMF report and related concerns starting January 5, 2026.

The Chairman of the Economic and Development Committee of Parliament, Eric Afful, accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of intentionally making allegations to render Ghana’s economic gains useless. “The $214 million the NPP is quoting is a transactional cost of the GoldBod, and you cannot determine this as a loss because, as we speak today we do not have the financials of the GoldBod,” he said.

While GoldBod itself has indeed recorded profits, those gains have come at the expense of the central bank, which has absorbed the bulk of the losses generated by the programme. The IMF has warned that this arrangement poses risks to the Bank of Ghana’s financial position, stating plainly that the domestic gold purchase programme poses risks to the financial sustainability of the BoG.

Gyamfi highlighted that under the NPP administration, audited losses under the Gold for Oil and Gold for Reserves schemes in 2023 and 2024 totaled approximately 7 billion cedis. He contrasted economic performance, noting the cedi depreciated 27.8% in 2023 and 19.2% in 2024 amid 22.3% and 23.8% inflation rates, versus 2025’s 35% cedi appreciation and inflation dropping from 23.8% to 6.3% over 11 months.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, the Board is expected to fully take over the artisanal and small scale gold trading programme from January 2026, meaning GoldBod would no longer operate as an intermediary for the Bank of Ghana.

The debate continues as stakeholders await Gyamfi’s detailed response in January 2026 and the release of audited financial statements for both GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana’s Gold for Reserves programme.

BoG, SEC and FIC intensify sensitisation for Virtual Asset Service Providers

0

Ghana’s financial regulators have begun laying the compliance groundwork for the formal regulation of digital assets, as the Bank of Ghana (BoG), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) jointly deepened engagement with players in the virtual asset ecosystem.

On December 22, 2025, the three institutions held an Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) sensitisation workshop for Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs), signalling a decisive step toward the full operationalisation of the newly enacted Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) Act.

The workshop, which drew more than 90 participants from Ghana’s rapidly expanding virtual asset industry, focused on strengthening compliance culture in a sector regulators increasingly view as both innovation-enabling and high-risk.

Discussions centred on Ghana’s existing AML/CFT architecture, including the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044), the AML/CFT Guidelines (2022) and the provisions of the VASP Act.

Regulators stressed that VASPs are now formally classified as Accountable Institutions under the AML/CFT Guidelines, placing them under the same reporting, customer due diligence and transaction-monitoring obligations as traditional financial institutions.

Officials emphasised that compliance is no longer optional. Virtual asset firms must now implement robust know-your-customer (KYC) procedures, suspicious transaction reporting systems and internal controls aligned with national and international AML/CFT standards.

The regulators also outlined key provisions of the VASP Act, including mandatory licensing and registration requirements and the transitional arrangements for firms already operating in the market.

Authorities cautioned that operators who fail to regularise their status within the prescribed transition period will face strict sanctions, including penalties and potential exclusion from the market.

The message was clear: Ghana intends to close regulatory gaps that previously allowed digital asset activities to operate in a grey zone.

The joint engagement reflects a coordinated supervisory approach by BoG, SEC and FIC to strike a balance between fostering fintech innovation and protecting the financial system from abuse.

While virtual assets offer opportunities for financial inclusion and new investment channels, regulators reiterated concerns about their vulnerability to money laundering, terrorism financing and illicit cross-border flows.

By proactively engaging industry players, the authorities aim to reduce systemic risk, enhance investor protection and align Ghana’s digital asset regulation with global best practices.

Regulators confirmed that implementation of the VASP Act will be a major regulatory priority in 2026, as Ghana positions itself to integrate digital assets into its formal financial architecture without undermining market confidence or financial stability.

For VASPs, the workshop served both as guidance and a warning: compliance readiness will determine which firms can sustainably operate in Ghana’s emerging, but increasingly regulated, virtual asset market.

Dr. Hayford Mensah Ayerakwa has warned that Ghana may be postponing a deeper economic crisis by aggressively intervening in the foreign exchange market to stabilise the cedi.

Pushing Rawlings’ children out ‘suicidal’ for NDC — Doyoe warns

0

The Member of Parliament for Ada, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, has cautioned that any attempt by members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to sideline or push out the children of late former President Jerry John Rawlings from the party would amount to a “suicidal mission.”

She said the NDC has a responsibility to protect and preserve the political legacy of the Rawlings family, stressing that the children and grandchildren of the late former President and former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, must be supported within the party.

“This man is no more, and his wife is also no more, but they left us with beautiful children. It is our duty to take good care of them. Anyone who plans to chase these children out of this party will be embarking on a suicidal mission,” she stated.

Madam Cudjoe-Ghansah made the remarks at the 44th anniversary commemoration of the 31st December 1981 Revolution, which overthrew the Dr Hilla Limann government and ushered in the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) era led by former President Jerry John Rawlings.

The event was held under the theme, “Consolidating the Reset Agenda: Reflections on the Gains of the 31st December Revolution.”

She paid tribute to the Rawlings administration, highlighting its contributions to the development of Ada Township and the country as a whole. According to her, the former President implemented policies that improved living conditions, including measures to combat disease and provide essential social amenities such as district hospitals, road infrastructure, electricity and other basic services.

She also noted the Rawlings administration’s role in addressing long-standing disputes surrounding the Songor Lagoon.

Touching on development in the Ada Constituency, Madam Cudjoe-Ghansah said the NDC’s record remains strong, particularly in education, healthcare, energy and infrastructure.

She cited the construction of several schools and major infrastructure upgrades at Ada Senior High School and Ada Senior High Technical School, as well as expanded healthcare access through the provision of Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds across the constituency.

She added that almost all communities in Ada have been connected to the national electricity grid, while significant improvements have been made to major highways and town roads.

Madam Cudjoe-Ghansah also described the Ada Sea Defence Project as one of the most impactful interventions in the area, noting that it has protected coastal communities from severe sea erosion that previously threatened lives and property.

“The NDC’s record in the Ada Constituency speaks for itself. In the education sector, several schools have been constructed, with major infrastructure improvements carried out at both Ada Senior High School and Ada Senior High Technical School. Access to healthcare has also been expanded through the construction of numerous CHPS compounds across the constituency. In terms of electricity, nearly all communities in Ada have been connected to the national grid. Significant progress has also been made on road infrastructure, with major highways and several town roads upgraded. Another key achievement is the Ada Sea Defence Project, which has safeguarded communities from severe coastal erosion that previously threatened lives and property,” she added.

The strong year-to-date performance reflects renewed investor confidence in Ghana’s equity market, driven by improved macroeconomic conditions, currency stability, and corporate earnings growth across sectors. The financial sector’s outperformance, with gains exceeding 95%, highlights the recovery of banking and financial services stocks.

Market analysts attribute the stellar performance to several factors, including the cedi’s appreciation against major currencies, declining inflation, improved foreign exchange reserves, and policy stability following the implementation of economic reforms.

The GSE’s performance in 2025 positions Ghana as one of the best performing stock markets in Africa, attracting both domestic and international investors seeking higher returns in frontier markets.

As investors look ahead to 2026, market watchers expect continued activity driven by corporate earnings announcements, dividend payments, and ongoing economic reforms under the new administration.

Sammy Gyamfi is the CEO of Goldbod Sammy Gyamfi is the CEO of Goldbod

The Concerned Small Scale Miners Association (CSSMA) has commended Sammy Gyamfi for what it described as strong and effective leadership in the establishment and operations of Goldbod.

According to them, Gyamfi’s efforts are helping to realise President John Dramani Mahama’s vision for Ghana’s small-scale and artisanal gold mining sector.

In a statement released on December 31, 2025, the association said Goldbod was created to bring structure, fairness and greater national value to the sector and noted that under Gyamfi’s leadership, the initiative is steadily taking shape.

“Sammy Gyamfi has shown clear leadership in managing Goldbod and working closely with small and artisanal miners across the country. Through continuous engagement and openness, he has rebuilt confidence between miners and the state and ensured that policies reflect the realities on the ground,” the statement said.

The association also praised Gyamfi for promoting fair and transparent pricing in gold purchases from small-scale miners, a move it said has improved incomes, reduced exploitation by middlemen and encouraged miners to sell through approved channels.

Minority questions GoldBod’s licensing of Bawa Rock as sole gold aggregator

According to CSSMA, these measures have strengthened compliance and stability within the sector.

“Goldbod’s operations under Gyamfi have contributed meaningfully to Ghana’s foreign exchange earnings through formal gold purchases and reduced leakages,” it added.

The association also welcomed Gyamfi’s commitment to tackling gold smuggling through a comprehensive traceability system, which it believes will help curb illicit trade, protect state revenue and promote environmentally-responsible mining practices.

“The Concerned Small Scale Miners Association fully supports Sammy Gyamfi and stands firmly behind him in delivering President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of a well-regulated, transparent, and nationally beneficial gold sector,” it concluded.

Read the full statement below:

Concerned Small Scale Miners Association Commends Sammy Gyamfi for Leadership at Goldbod

The Concerned Small Scale Miners Association (CSSMA) congratulates Sammy Gyamfi for his strong and effective leadership in implementing the vision of President John Dramani Mahama through the establishment and operations of Goldbod.

Goldbod was created to bring structure, fairness, and national value to Ghana’s small-scale and artisanal gold mining sector. Under the leadership of Gyamfi, this vision is steadily becoming a reality.

His work has shown commitment to national interest, discipline in management, and respect for the role of small-scale miners in Ghana’s economy.

Strong Leadership and Engagement with Miners

Sammy Gyamfi has shown clear leadership in managing Goldbod and working closely with small and artisanal miners across the country. Through continuous engagement and openness, he has rebuilt confidence between miners and the state and ensured that policies reflect the realities on the ground.

Fair Pricing for Small-Scale Miners

The Association commends Gyamfi for ensuring fair and transparent pricing in the purchase of gold from small-scale miners. This approach has improved incomes, reduced exploitation by middlemen, and encouraged miners to sell through approved channels, strengthening compliance and stability in the sector.

Boosting Foreign Exchange and Economic Stability

Goldbod’s operations under Gyamfi have contributed meaningfully to Ghana’s foreign exchange earnings through formal gold purchases and reduced leakages. These inflows have supported the economy by easing inflationary pressures, contributing to the appreciation of the cedi, improving the balance of payments, strengthening investor confidence, and supporting overall macroeconomic stability.

Firm Action Against Gold Smuggling

The Association applauds Gyamfi’s commitment to tackling gold smuggling. His promise to introduce a comprehensive and credible system for tracing gold purchases from source to sale is a major step toward ending illicit trade, protecting state revenue, and restoring integrity to the sector.

Protecting the Environment Through Traceability

Effective traceability will also deliver important environmental benefits. By formalising mining activities and enforcing standards, Goldbod’s systems will help reduce illegal mining, protect water bodies, improve land reclamation practices, and promote responsible mining that safeguards communities and natural resources.

Full Support for President Mahama’s Vision

The Concerned Small Scale Miners Association fully supports Sammy Gyamfi and stands firmly behind him in delivering President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of a well-regulated, transparent, and nationally beneficial gold sector. We remain committed to working with Goldbod and all stakeholders to ensure lasting success for small-scale miners and for Ghana.

Ghana’s Gold Sector Faces Scrutiny Over Alleged Losses

Ghana’s Gold Sector Faces Scrutiny Over Alleged Losses
Gold

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus in Parliament has demanded a full scale bipartisan parliamentary inquiry into alleged $214 million losses incurred through GoldBod’s purchases under the gold reserves scheme.

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, speaking on behalf of the Caucus in Parliament House on Monday, December 29, said the group had formally submitted a motion to the Clerk of Parliament for onward transmission to the Speaker. The motion seeks to constitute a bipartisan committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the losses, assess accountability, and recommend measures to safeguard the country’s financial interests.

According to the Minority, data submitted by the government to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) revealed that Ghana lost $214 million in just the first nine months of 2025 under the Gold for Reserves programme. The Minority said Ghana risked losing over $300 million by the end of 2025 through the government backed gold trading initiative.

Central to the Minority’s concerns is the role of Bawa Rock Ltd, which had been granted exclusive rights as the sole aggregator licensed by GoldBod to purchase artisanal gold across the country. The Minority questioned why a monopoly was created in an industry where competition is essential for fair pricing and transparency, demanding public disclosure of the criteria used to select Bawa Rock Ltd and the identities of its beneficial owners.

Akbar Yussif Rohullah Khomeini, a Special Aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has raised serious concerns over the operations of Bawa Rock Company Ltd, a firm he says was incorporated in February this year, shortly after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assumed power.

However, economic analyst Senyo Kwasi Hosi offered a different perspective on the reported loss. Hosi argues that while the $214 million is technically an accounting loss, it should be viewed in the broader context of economic gains.

Established in 2025, GoldBod centralises Ghana’s gold trade, boosts official foreign exchange inflows, and accumulates gold reserves. In its first year, the agency has sharply reduced gold smuggling, increasing official artisanal and small scale mining exports from 63.6 metric tons in 2024 to 101 metric tons in 2025.

The programme has helped raise Ghana’s foreign reserves from $8.98 billion in 2024 to $11.12 billion by October 2025, with projections of $13 billion by year end. The appreciation of the cedi, from an average of GH¢14.2 per dollar in 2024 to GH¢12.53 per dollar in 2025, has generated substantial fiscal savings.

Hosi explains that savings of over GH¢6.2 billion were recorded on external debt servicing alone when compared to budgeted exchange rate assumptions, while foreign exchange savings on Independent Power Producer payments exceeded GH¢6.45 billion.

Hosi explains that the loss arises partly from GoldBod paying world market rates to local miners and offering bonuses to discourage smuggling. This strategy ensured gold was sold through official channels rather than foreign networks, strengthening reserves and generating foreign exchange inflows.

“The DGPP has delivered stability, fiscal savings, and inflation reduction,” Hosi said. “The $214 million is not a loss but a policy cost whose benefits far outweigh its financial cost”. He notes that inflation declined from 24 percent in 2024 to 6.3 percent by November 2025.

GoldBod has strongly rejected claims contained in the International Monetary Fund’s Fifth Review report that the Bank of Ghana incurred losses under the Gold for Reserve program. GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi has maintained that it has not recorded any losses and is instead on track to post a surplus of at least GH¢600 million by the end of the 2025 financial year.

The debate has left investors and businesses unsettled as they await clarity from the government. The Minority has called for a Parliamentary Ad hoc Investigative Committee with subpoena powers to examine contracts, licences, and intermediaries.

With Ghana being a major gold producer, the outcome of this scrutiny could have significant implications for the country’s mining sector and foreign exchange management strategy heading into 2026.

Five arrested as police dismantle Accra, Tema robbery syndicate

0

The Ghana Police Service, through its Criminal Investigations Department (CID), has arrested five members of a notorious phone-snatching and armed robbery syndicate operating in Accra and Tema.

Intelligence-led investigations revealed the gang’s activities across Oyibi, Apollonia, Spintex, Airport Residential Area, East Legon Hills, Zenu, Ashaiman, and Kasoa.

In a press briefing, CID Director-General COP Lydia Yaako Donkor named the suspects as Seth Tetteh Noi, aka “Wonder,” Emmanuel Selasi Monyoko, Abdul Fatawo Samid, Karam Fatawo, and Abdul Jamal Mohammed. The suspects were apprehended during separate operations on December 24 and 26, 2025, at their hideouts.

Police recovered a pistol and a pump-action machine gun believed to have been used in several robberies.

The CID linked the syndicate to a violent robbery attack on mourners at Ashaiman Underbridge, where victims were robbed of cash and valuables worth over GH¢200,000.

“Following coordinated operations at Ashaiman China Mall and Kasoa, police arrested the five suspects and recovered a pistol and a pump-action machine gun, believed to have been used in multiple robberies. Investigations also connected the syndicate to the Ashaiman Underbridge robbery during a funeral, and further intelligence helped foil another planned attack at Ashaiman China Mall,” COP Donkor said.

She added that investigations are ongoing and more arrests are expected as police work to dismantle all branches of the gang.

How GOLDBOD helped drive Ghana’s currency appreciation in 2025 – Hosi Senyo shares

0

Finance and economic policy analyst Senyo Hosi has attributed Ghana’s currency appreciation in 2025 primarily to the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme operated through GOLDBOD.

“Gross international reserves are always at the core of a currency’s stability,” Hosi said in an article. “So the lower the reserves, the lower the value of the currency in a floating FX regime.”

Eddie Hearn praises ‘loyalty’ of Anthony Joshua’s fallen friends Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele

0

Eddie Hearn has provided a touching tribute to Anthony Joshua’s friends who tragically died this week in a car crash.

Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele passed away while travelling alongside Joshua, who was hurt, in a vehicle which was involved in an accident in Nigeria on Monday.

They were the former world heavyweight champion’s friends, as well as important cogs in his boxing training team.

“Rest in peace ‘Latz’ and Sina,” Joshua’s promoter Hearn posted to social media on New Year’s Eve.

“Your energy and loyalty among so many other great qualities will be deeply missed.

“Praying for strength and guidance for all their family, friends and of course AJ during this very difficult time.”

Frank Warren, the promoter of Joshua’s in-ring rival Tyson Fury, told ITV: “This is an awful time for everybody. Hopefully AJ has come out of it physically well.

“But, mentally is a different issue. I don’t know if he’ll even have the appetite to fight again, or whether he will fight again.

“Only time will tell.”

Joshua had signalled his intention to pursue a long-awaited fight with British rival Fury in 2026, after knocking out Jake Paul.

Fury, who is officially retired, had dropped a series of social media hints about returning to the boxing ring but those plans are now unknown after the tragedy in Nigeria this week.

Fury was among the boxers to pass on their condolences, posting: “This is so sad. May God give them a good bed in heaven.”

Joshua remains in a stable condition in hospital. His representative told ESPN that his injuries have not worsened since the accident.

Ghana fully reaping benefits of gold exports because of GoldBod — Senyo Hosi

0

Finance and Economic Policy Analyst, Senyo Kwasi Hosi, has defended the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) amid criticism over reported losses incurred under the gold-for-reserves programme.

This follows disclosures in the fifth review of Ghana’s IMF-supported programme, which indicated that losses from artisanal and small-scale doré gold transactions had reached US$214 million.

The revelation has sparked strong criticism from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), with the Minority in Parliament calling for a parliamentary probe into GoldBod’s operations.

Reacting to the debate in an opinion editorial, Senyo Hosi argued that the amount described as a loss should rather be seen as a policy cost that has delivered far greater economic benefits to the country.

“The recent debate about the reported US$214 million loss by the Bank of Ghana in its gold-for-reserves programme has been quite fascinating. Some contend it is a loss, while others argue it is not,” he stated.

According to him, Ghana was previously unable to fully benefit from its gold resources due to widespread smuggling and weak control of the gold trade, particularly in the artisanal and small-scale mining sector.

“Prior to the formation of GoldBod, one thing was certain: Ghana was not fully benefiting from its gold output, with nearly a third of our production being smuggled and left unaccounted for,” he noted.

Senyo Hosi explained that GoldBod’s pricing strategy, including paying close to world market prices, helped disincentivise smuggling and significantly increased official gold exports, which in turn boosted foreign exchange inflows.

The financial expert added that the policy had contributed to the accumulation of gold reserves, stabilisation of the cedi, reduction in inflation, and substantial savings in government debt servicing and import bills.

In his view, the reported US$214 million should not be assessed through a narrow accounting lens but against the broader economic outcomes achieved.

“An accounting loss or financial loss is not an economic loss. The US$214 million is a policy cost, and its economic benefits far outweigh the financial cost,” he stressed.
