One-half of the popular Keche music group, Keche Joshua, has shared heartfelt memories of his late friend, Ama Endorsed.

In an interview with GhanaWeb’s Isaac Dadzie during her burial ceremony on May 24, 2025, Keche Joshua encouraged everyone to reflect on the sudden passing of Ama Endorsed and use it as a life lesson.

He noted that her untimely demise should remind people of the importance of humility, generosity, and living with purpose.

“I have lost a big one. Ama is something else if I am to talk about her. I pray that we all learn from this. There’s a reason why our leaders always say we should stay humble and love each other.

“As the priest said in the church, if there’s any good thing you have to do, do it now, because you don’t know what tomorrow holds,” he said.

The musician also expressed his condolences to the bereaved family.

“My condolences to the family, even though I consider myself family. And also to her friends and everyone. May God be our strength, and I pray we learn a lot from this sorrowful loss,” he added.

Comfort Esime Adzigbli, popularly known as Ama Endorsed, passed away on April 17, 2025, after a brief illness.

Just before her passing, Ama had celebrated her 29th birthday and gifted herself a Range Rover.

She was widely admired for her vibrant online presence and trailblazing achievements in the male-dominated carpentry industry.

Proudly referring to herself as “The Lady Carpenter,” Ama broke barriers and redefined what was possible for women in trade professions.

Beyond carpentry, she was a serial entrepreneur, influencer, and motivational figure who used her platform to inspire countless young women across Ghana and beyond.

Young entrepreneurs who looked up to her described Ama as a hardworking, fearless woman, an embodiment of purpose, resilience, and empowerment.

First Lady launches Ghanasco’s 65th anniversary, praises school’s legacy

First Lady Lordina Dramani Mahama officially launched the 65th anniversary of Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO) on Saturday in Tamale, emphasising the school’s legacy of excellence and its role in shaping future generations.

As a proud alumna, Mrs. Mahama seized the occasion to highlight President John Dramani Mahama’s dedication to education and the transformative power of learning.

The First Lady lauded GHANASCO’s contribution to Ghana, stating, “GHANASCO is more than just a school; it is a community, a heritage, and a training ground for leaders, professionals, artisans, and patriots.” She celebrated the school’s 65-year commitment to nurturing well-rounded young Ghanaians.

Mrs Mahama proudly acknowledged the achievements of several prominent GHANASCO alumni, including Alhaji Alhassan Andani (former Managing Director of Stanbic Bank Ghana), Dr Mohammed Ibrahim Awal (former Minister for Business Development), John Jinapor (Minister for Energy and Green Transition), Alhassan Suhuyini (Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways), legendary footballers Abedi Pele and Kwame Ayew, and Professor Bashiru Imoro Saeed (Vice Chancellor of Tamale Technical University).

Highlighting the connection between the school and national leadership, the First Lady attributed President John Mahama’s effective leadership, in part, to his GHANASCO education.

“He often speaks fondly of his time here, where the lessons, discipline, friendships, and experiences laid the foundation for his leadership,” she said, adding: “His experiences at Ghanasco deeply influenced his commitment to transforming education as a life-changing experience for every child.”

The First Lady also reiterated the government’s commitment to education, emphasising initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, enhancing teacher training, prioritising Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and implementing further initiatives to enhance teaching and learning.

Echoing the First Lady’s sentiments, Professor Saeed emphasised GHANASCO’s founding mission to cultivate future leaders, a goal exemplified by the achievements of both President and Mrs Mahama.

The Headmaster, Mr. Douglas Haruna Yakubu, reflected on the school’s evolution and urged students to emulate the successes of their alumni while avoiding negative behaviours such as vandalism and drug abuse. He also appealed to the government for assistance in providing essential facilities, including a library, assembly hall, dormitory, and improved sanitation.

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, assured the school of the government’s support. Reciting a line from the school anthem, he commended the GHANASCO community and announced that tenders for the construction of an assembly hall and dormitory would be issued soon. The Minister also pledged to address the shortage of classroom furniture.

Hon. Iddrisu addressed the matter of student discipline, pledging to empower school authorities to conduct searches and impose stringent penalties for misconduct. He also announced plans to review the basic school curriculum to reinforce the use of native languages as the foundation for learning.

The 65th anniversary will be commemorated in October this year.

The event was well attended by dignitaries, including Ali Adolf John (Northern Regional Minister), John Jinapor, Alhasan Suhuyini, Abu Takoro (Mayor of Tamale), and Alhassan Alidu Jnr (Regional Educational Director).

The local contingent of the Black Stars has arrived in London ahead of the 2025 Unity Cup, set to kick off on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium.

The trio of Benjamin Asare (Hearts of Oak), Razak Simpson (Nations FC), and Kwame Opoku (Asante Kotoko) touched down in the UK on Saturday night as they joined the national team for the maiden edition of the tournament.

The three players were called up following impressive performances in the ongoing Ghana Premier League season.

Benjamin Asare, who has quickly become a trusted figure in the Black Stars setup after debuting during Ghana’s back-to-back wins in the March World Cup qualifiers, left Ghana shortly after helping Hearts of Oak to a 3-1 win in domestic action.

His consistency has earned him a regular spot among the national goalkeeping ranks.

Razak Simpson, a key pillar in Nations FC’s defence, will miss his club’s top-of-the-table clash with Samartex this weekend.

Nations FC currently leads the league, and Simpson’s absence will be felt in what could be a crucial fixture in the title race.

Kwame Opoku, who has reignited his form since returning to Asante Kotoko, also makes the squad and will be unavailable for Kotoko’s game against Bibiani GoldStars.

His call-up marks a significant personal milestone as he pushes for a permanent place in the national team.

The Black Stars will face Nigeria on May 28, 2025, in their opening match of the Unity Cup. Depending on the result, they will either advance to the final or compete in the third-place playoff, both scheduled for May 31.

The full squad is expected to officially begin camp on Sunday, May 25, 2025, as part of preparations not just for the Unity Cup but also for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Mali in September.

Judges on committee may be called as witnesses – Former Deputy A-G Tuah-Yeboah

0

A former deputy Attorney-General, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, has supported Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s decision to challenge the composition of the committee inquiring into the petitions asking that she should be removed from office.

He described her request for certain judges to recuse themselves as both legally and ethically justified.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsfile programme on Saturday [May 25, 2025], Mr Tuah Yeboah explained that if a committee member was involved in decisions cited as grounds for the Chief Justice’s removal, it would be reasonable for her to raise objections based on fairness and potential bias.

He added that in such cases, the Chief Justice might need to call those judges as witnesses in her defence. This, he said, would create a clear conflict of interest if they remained on the committee adjudicating her case.

“Whatever the CJ says, that she may want to call Justice X as her witness in that matter, what happens?” Mr Tuah Yeboah asked. “She tells you, ‘Yes, this person is my witness in that case.’ So when you consider the optics and the circumstances, the CJ had no option but to go to court.”

The Chief Justice last week filed an application at the Supreme Court to challenge the participation of some judges in the disciplinary proceedings against her.

The suit follows concerns that some committee members had previously sat on cases now cited as justification for her removal.

Mr Tuah Yeboah said the Chief Justice is within her constitutional rights to seek clarity or redress from the courts.

LatexFoamPromo

“If you go to the chief’s palace and there is a matter before the chief, and the chief has empaneled other chiefs, you have a right to raise an objection to any of them sitting on your matter,” he said.

”Similarly, in this case, the CJ is saying some judges took part in decisions forming the basis for her removal. That makes her concerns legitimate.”

The former Deputy Attorney-General also cautioned against viewing the Chief Justice’s legal strategy as an attempt to delay the process, as some critics suggest. Instead, he said it reflects an effort to uphold due process and protect the integrity of the proceedings.

“The CJ, as a citizen, has the right under the Constitution to vindicate any concerns by going to court,” he added. “She has every right to challenge each step along the way.”

Mr Tuah Yeboah said such legal channels must be preserved and respected, especially when the matter involves the head of the judiciary.

2025 New Horizon School fun games : Children with disabilities demonstrate athletic abilities

0

By Simon Asare

Accra, May 25, GNA – It was all excitement at the 2025 New Horizon Fun Games, as children with special needs demonstrated their athletic abilities in a variety of sporting disciplines.

From the extremely competitive 50-meter dash to the sack racing event at the school’s park in Cantonments, the day was filled with enthusiasm, with all competing children receiving medals for their efforts.

Musical chairs, tug-of-war games, dance-offs, a football match and drumming performances were among the entertaining games at this year’s games, which was themed “For a Righteous Man May Fall Seven Times and Rise Again (Prov. 24:16)”.

Madam Nana Abena Kwakyi, the Chairperson of this year’s Fun Games, said she was proud to be part of this year’s games, emphasising the legacy of the school’s founder, the late Madam Salomey Francios.

She stated that the games would help enrich participants’ health and also help them improve their social lives.

“Today, we gather to embrace the vision of New Horizon Special School, a great institution that has championed and heralded attention to special education in Ghana and beyond our borders.

“This institution has over the years focused on a personalised approach to teaching and supporting learners with unique needs and has achieved outstanding results,” she said.

Madam Abena Kwakyi urged all members of society to seek more understanding about children with special needs and commit to supporting their courses for relevance and inclusivity.

Madam Mariama Obeng, Deputy Principal In-charge of Vocational Training, the annual fun games were created to help students exhibit their potential.

“They are filled with lots of excitement when it is time for fun games, and you could see their display at games because every one of them has some form of hidden potential.

“It takes a lot of patience to be able to unearth the talents of the children, and once you identify their talent, they are always happy to engage in such activities, which makes them very productive,” she said.

However, given the high cost of care for children with special needs, Madam Obeng urged the government and private organisations to provide more assistance.

Mona Gucci claps back at Efia Odo, Sister Derby, others over ‘TikTokers’ comment

Ghanaian media personality Mona Gucci Ghanaian media personality Mona Gucci

Controversial media personality Mona Gucci has fired back at musician Sister Derby, socialite Efia Odo, and content creator Kwadwo Sheldon, among others, for defending TikTokers following her recent criticism of them.

It may be recalled that during one of her shows, Mona Gucci criticized TikTokers, particularly a creator named Ahmed, stating that they did not deserve to be on the red carpet at the recent 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

Her comments sparked backlash from several entertainment personalities, including Efia Odo and Sister Derby, who deemed her statements unwarranted and disrespectful.

In a new development, Mona Gucci has responded to those who attacked her views.

Addressing Sister Derby, Mona argued that despite the musician’s fame, she has not made any significant contribution to the music industry.

“You failed at everything, including relationships. You are an A-list celebrity who could have used her platform to do many things, but you’ve done nothing. You started a campaign visiting schools to educate kids about LGBTQ+ issues until Sam George came to attack you.

“You are an A-list artiste, but an empty one, and Ghana cannot boast of any real achievement from you. Your music career didn’t go far despite your fame. If you had given birth early, Ahmed would be the same age as your child,” she stated.

Turning to Efia Odo, Mona Gucci accused her of hypocrisy.

“Efia Odo, apart from dating musicians, breaking up with them, and starting a podcast, what do you do for Ghana? I didn’t even mention your name because I don’t regard you. What’s wrong with advising influencers to focus on what they do?

“You said I’m full of negative energy, yet you’re the one attacking a woman who is way better than you,” she fired.

She also questioned Kwadwo Sheldon’s credibility and skill as a content creator.

“Kwadwo, you are not intelligent, so focus on your YouTube and stick to comedy. You are not talented. You’re not accredited to review music videos or songs,” she added.

Government initiates process to reintroduce road and bridge tolls

New toll booths will be modernised New toll booths will be modernised

The reintroduction of road tolls, as previously announced by the Government of Ghana, is set to commence soon, with the necessary processes already underway.

According to a report by graphic.com.gh, the reintroduced road tolls will incorporate technology-driven solutions aimed at modernising the system to improve efficiency, boost revenue generation, and ensure greater transparency.

The report further indicated that the new road toll system will be implemented at 65 toll booths nationwide, an increase from the previous 39 booths that were in operation before the suspension under the previous administration.

The Ministry of Roads and Highways, which is leading the initiative, is therefore inviting qualified Ghanaian private sector entities to submit tenders for pre-qualification in the areas of design, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance of the new tolling system.

Additionally, this process is in line with the Public Private Partnership Act, 2022 (Act 1039).

“We are beginning the procurement process, where we are inviting Ghanaian-owned companies or a consortium that is led by Ghanaians. At least they should prove that the Ghanaians have about 51 per cent in that consortium.

“We are doing what we call the pre-qualification, where we look at the technical, the financial capacity of the firms and their legal status,” the Head of Public Relations of the Ministry of Roads and Highways, Nasir Ahmad Yartey, is quoted as saying by Graphic online on May 22, 2025.

The deadline set for the submission of bids from qualified entities is June 19,2025.

According to Ahmad Yartey, the successful bidder would be responsible for mobilising capital for the tolling system’s modernisation and also undertake the design and construction through engineering, construction and installation of toll gantries/plazas and related infrastructure.

In the operation and maintenance, he said the selected bidder would manage toll collection and related road/bridges and ensure system reliability and that with revenue collection, it would implement robust systems to maximise efficiency and minimise revenue leakages.

US dollar falls to lowest since 2023 as investors eye trade risks

0

File photo of US dollar notes File photo of US dollar notes

The US dollar slumped to its lowest level since 2023 as new tariff threats from President Donald Trump and the risk of a widening fiscal deficit drag on the currency’s appeal.

The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index fell as much as 0.8% on Friday, extending a more-than-7% decline since the beginning of the year. The dollar is down for a fourth day in five after Trump’s latest threats of tariffs, on the European Union and Apple Inc., added to investor concern about the impact of his trade policies on the world’s top economy.

Meanwhile, hedge funds, asset managers and other speculative traders continued to bet against the dollar, according to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

A “large increase in tariffs on US imports from the EU once again brings forward the potential for recession risks in the US alongside higher policy and economic uncertainty,” said Aroop Chatterjee, a strategist at Wells Fargo in New York.

The dollar’s declines offered support for all of its Group-of-10 currency peers. Seven currencies out of the group rose 1% or more against the greenback during Friday’s trading, with New Zealand and Australian dollars leading advances. The Canadian loonie strengthened to as much as 1.3709 per US currency, its strongest level since October.

The losses on Friday continued even after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Bloomberg Television’s Wall Street Week with David Westin that the US could strike several large trade deals in the next couple of weeks.

He also said that he wouldn’t necessarily call the dollar weak, adding that the recent moves in foreign-exchange have been driven more by other currencies appreciating rather than the greenback softening.

“Bessent’s commentary this morning didn’t do dollar any favors and likely inserted further speculation into the market that this administration is pursuing a weaker-dollar policy,” said Monex foreign-exchange trader Helen Given.

Dollar ‘Jitters’

Enthusiasm has been fading for the world’s reserve currency this year. Speculative traders remained bearish on the dollar but trimmed their positioning to $12.4 billion in the week ending May 20 from $16.5 billion in a week prior, according to CFTC data reported Friday.

Some of the angst has come as the Senate considers Trump’s tax bill, which includes a debt ceiling increase the Treasury needs to avoid a default that could happen as soon as August or September.

The version of the bill passed by the House of Representatives is expected to add hundreds of billions of dollars to the federal deficit each year.

“The jitters with respect to the US budget suggest that the market is continuing to re-think the US exceptionalism trade,” Jane Foley, a strategist in London for Rabobank. “Whether it be budget, inflation or growth concerns, investors are more wary of US assets and that is continuing to weigh on the dollar.”

FIFA have paid glowing tribute to one of the most unforgettable matches in recent World Cup history, Ghana’s pulsating 2-2 draw with eventual champions Germany at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

More than a decade later, the clash at Estadio Castelao still resonates as a shining example of drama, quality, and fearless football from the African giants.

In a special throwback feature shared across their official platforms, FIFA hailed the Black Stars for their bold, high-energy display against one of the tournament’s heavyweights.

Ghana not only matched Germany stride for stride in Fortaleza’s scorching heat, they went toe-to-toe and came within minutes of a famous victory.

The match saw Germany take a 51st-minute lead through Mario Götze, whose awkward header-knee combination just beat goalkeeper Fatau Dauda.

But Ghana responded with ferocious intensity. Just three minutes later, Andre Ayew soared to meet Harrison Afful’s pinpoint cross, heading home to send the crowd into raptures.

Nine minutes after that, Asamoah Gyan capitalized on a rare Philipp Lahm error, latching onto a brilliant Sulley Muntari through ball to fire the Black Stars into a 2-1 lead.

Gyan’s goal not only gave Ghana the lead but also brought him level with Cameroonian legend Roger Milla as the joint-top African scorer at the World Cup with five goals, a record Gyan would surpass in the next group match against Portugal, making him the continent’s all-time leading scorer in the tournament to this day.

But Germany, brimming with talent and led by Joachim Löw, weren’t finished. The introduction of veteran Miroslav Klose changed the tide.

With his very first touch, Klose poked home from close range following a flick-on from Benedikt Höwedes in the 71st minute, a goal that made him joint top-scorer in World Cup history alongside Brazil’s Ronaldo with 15 goals.

Klose will eventually score against Ronaldo’s Brazil in their 7-1 loss against Germany in the semi-finals, to become the leading scorer of the World Cup

The remainder of the match was a fierce end-to-end battle. Toni Kroos and Thomas Müller threatened for Germany, but Ghana held firm. Christian Atsu and Gyan came close to snatching a winner as the Black Stars refused to back down.

The final whistle was met with exhaustion, applause, and respect, neither side deserved to lose, and the football world recognised that something special had unfolded.

‘We don’t manufacture Prophecies’ – Nigel Gaisie defends 31st Night revelations

0

The Founder and Leader of the Prophetic Hill Church, Prophet Nigel Gaisie, has defended the significance of 31st December prophecies, insisting that they are not man-made but divinely inspired messages from God.

In an exclusive interview with Ghana Weekend on Thursday May 22, the renowned cleric addressed the ongoing public discourse around the annual tradition, which often attracts criticism for predicting doom and misfortune.

“On 31st night prophecies, for those who would speak, they spoke the mind of God,” he said. “God speaks to us daily, even right now, God speaks to us. We are not the manufacturers of prophecies.”

Prophet Gaisie stressed that the interpretation of prophetic messages is often subjective, depending on the recipient. “To you, what you may call negative, to another may not be negative. It relatively depends on who again is receiving it,” he explained.

He also clarified why 31st December prophecies often attract public attention. According to him, prophecies are delivered every day, but the heightened media coverage during Watch Night services makes them more visible and controversial.

“31st is when the major cameras come into the churches. We prophesy every day, but it’s just that on 31st night, the cameras come into the various churches and they balloon or blow it up that is why,” he noted.

Karpowership Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing quality education and gender equality through a strategic engagement with the new leadership of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO.

The meeting, led by Sandra Amartikar Amarquaye, Corporate Communications Manager at Karpowership Ghana, alongside her team members Israel Norshie and Jill Donkoh, was a courtesy call aimed at strengthening ongoing collaborations.

Discussions centered on joint initiatives to mark key global observances such as the International Day of Education and World Engineering Day, with a focus on empowering the youth through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

For the past four years, Karpowership Ghana has actively partnered with UNESCO in Ghana to commemorate these important days, using them as platforms to inspire young minds and promote sustainable development goals.

These include SDG 4 – Quality Education, and SDG 5 – Gender Equality, which are at the heart of the company’s corporate social responsibility agenda.

“We believe that education and engineering are powerful tools to transform communities and build a sustainable future,” said Sandra Amarquaye.

“Our ongoing collaboration with UNESCO is a testament to our shared vision of creating opportunities for the next generation, especially girls and young women in STEM fields.”

The engagement signals a renewed commitment to expanding joint programmes that encourage youth participation, innovation, and gender inclusivity in the educational and energy sectors.

As a global energy company, Karpowership continues to invest in educational projects and mentorship initiatives in Ghana , contributing to national development through capacity building and empowerment.

Trump threatens 25% tariff on Apple, warns Samsung and others could be next

0

President Donald Trump on Friday demanded Apple and other smartphone makers like Samsung make their phones in the United States or face a 25% tariff.

“I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhone’s that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else,” Trump posted Friday morning on Truth Social. “If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the U.S.”

Speaking to press in the Oval Office on Friday after signing executive orders, Trump said the tariff would apply to any phone maker selling devices in the US.

“It would be more. It would be also Samsung and anybody that makes that product,” Trump told reporters. “Otherwise it wouldn’t be fair.”

Trump last week during his Middle East trip said he was displeased with Cook, Apple’s CEO, over the company’s plan to manufacture iPhones set to be sold in the United States at newly built plants in India.

Over the past several years, Apple had been working to diversify its production capabilities. Some iPhone production had already moved to India, and Cook on Apple’s earnings call with investors earlier this month said he expected “the majority of iPhones sold in the US will have India as their country of origin.”

On that call, Cook said he expected Apple would face a tariff burden of up to $900 million this quarter. However, it could have been significantly worse: Apple and other US tech companies scored a big win last month when Trump exempted electronics from his massive tariffs on China.

Unlike Apple, Samsung doesn’t rely on China for smartphone production. The South Korea-based tech giant closed its last phone factory in China in 2019 after losing market share to domestic rivals, though it still has operations there. Sources within Samsung previously told CNN that the vast majority of its smartphone manufacturing takes place in South Korea, Vietnam, India and Brazil.

Despite lowering his tariff to at least 30% on most Chinese goods — down from 145% earlier this month — a 10% universal tariff remains on the majority of goods entering the United States. Roughly 90% of Apple’s iPhone production and assembly is based in China, according to Wedbush Securities’ estimates.

Trump met with Cook in Riyadh at the beginning of the president’s Middle East trip last week. In Qatar, he called out Cook for his plan to build US-bound iPhones in India.

“I had a little problem with Tim Cook,” Trump said last week in Qatar. “I said to him, ‘Tim, you’re my friend. I treated you very good. You’re coming in with $500 billion.’ But now I hear you’re building all over India. I don’t want you building in India.’”

Cook met with Trump once again at the White House on Tuesday, an administration official told CNN. The official did not divulge the subject matter of the meeting.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in an interview with Fox News on Friday morning that Trump is trying to “bring back precision manufacturing to the US.”

“I think that one of our greatest vulnerabilities are these, is this external production, especially in semiconductors, and a large part of Apple’s components are in semiconductors,” Bessent said. “So we would like to have Apple help us make the semiconductor supply chain more secure.”

Some of Apple’s chips are already made in the United States, thanks to its partnership with TSMC, which recently opened a chipmaking plant in Arizona. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

‘Those jobs aren’t coming back’

The world’s most valuable publicly traded company is flush with cash and rakes in tremendous profit — more than any company in history. But Apple has long contended that it cannot manufacture iPhones in America.

Apple has invested billions of dollars training millions of skilled engineers abroad. China and India, with their massive populations, simply have more skilled engineers than the United States does. And it costs Apple significantly less to pay those workers.

Steve Jobs, Apple’s late CEO, famously brought up the issue during an October 2010 meeting with former President Barack Obama. He called America’s lackluster education system an obstacle for Apple, which needed 30,000 industrial engineers to support its on-site factory workers.

“You can’t find that many in America to hire,” Jobs told Obama, according to his biographer, Walter Isaacson. “If you could educate these engineers, we could move more manufacturing plants here.”

In a 2012 interview with tech journalists Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg, Apple CEO Tim Cook said he agreed with Jobs’ assessment. When asked if the day would ever come when an Apple product is made in the United States, he said: “I want there to be … and you can bet that we’ll use the whole of our influence on this.”

The notion Apple can reshore iPhone production is a “fictional tale,” Dan Ives, global head of technology research at financial services firm Wedbush Securities, told CNN’s Erin Burnett last month.

US-made iPhones could cost more than three times their current price of around $1,000, he said, because it would be necessary to replicate the highly complex production ecosystem that currently exists in Asia.

“You build that (supply chain) in the US with a fab in West Virginia and New Jersey, they’ll be $3,500 iPhones,” he said, referring to fabrication plants, or high-tech manufacturing facilities where computer chips that power electronic devices are normally made.

And even then, it would cost Apple about $30 billion and three years to move just 10% of its supply chain to the US to begin with, Ives told Burnett.

Ives reiterated that stance in a statement following Trump’s Friday tariff threat, saying, “the concept of Apple producing iPhones in the US is a fairy tale that is not feasible.” He estimated moving all of Apple’s iPhone production to the United States would take five to 10 years.

An additional 25% tariff on Apple products could result in higher prices for US iPhone buyers. Rumors have already been swirling that Apple is considering raising prices when it releases its new lineup of iPhones in the fall — a move that could further irk Trump, although the company will likely avoid directly attributing the increases to tariffs.

Gene Munster, managing partner at Deepwater Asset Management, estimates it would be difficult for Apple not to raise iPhone prices if it faces tariffs of 30% or higher.

“Anything below 30, they will probably carry the vast majority of that increase,” he said. “But I think at some point they’re going to have to start to share it.”

While moving iPhone production to the United States may not be possible, Apple did announce a $500 billion investment to expand its US facilities earlier this year, in an apparent effort to appease Trump.

The company said the investment would create a new facility to produce servers — previously made outside the United States — in Houston to support Apple Intelligence, its new brand of artificial intelligence products. It will also expand data center capacity in several states, and plans to invest in corporate facilities and production of Apple TV+ shows in 20 states, among other efforts.

Groom reveals the wedding detail that offended his ‘unhinged’ guests

A groom revealed his wife’s wedding guests were ‘offended’ and felt ‘cheap’ during their big day because of a surprising detail.

Taking to Reddit, the man, who is believed to be from the US, explained that he and his bride both make six-figure salaries and didn’t ask for any gifts or money from their wedding guests.

The newlyweds even went to the effort of writing ‘gifts are not required, your presence is the greatest present’ on the the invitations to ensure there was absolutely no misunderstanding.

However, they did leave out a box for greeting cards on the reception table for any guests who wanted to wish them on their big day.

However the bride’s relatives misconstrued it to be a ‘subtle way to ask for money’ and felt obliged to put cash and cheques into the card box – saying the wedding felt like a ‘fundraiser.’

The post read: ‘Relatives offended because our wedding made them feel “cheap”.

‘Just to give some context, my wife and I are very fortunate to both make six-figure (salaries). We had also lived together for a year before our engagement and wedding, so we already had all the household stuff we needed, and didn’t really feel like we want to ask for more.

‘So for our wedding, we purposely didn’t have a registry, and, in our invitation, we specifically said “gifts are not required, your presence is the greatest present”.

A groom revealed on Reddit that his wife’s wedding guests were ‘offended’ and felt ‘cheap’ during their big day because of a surprising detail (stock image)

‘We also did this to minimise the expenses for our guests, hoping as many of our friends and family would come and celebrate with us as possible.

‘We do have a card box at the reception table, for guests to write [their wishes] and slide their cards in.

He continued: ‘Apparently some of my wife’s relatives thought it was a subtle way to ask for money (it wasn’t), so they felt obligated to put cash and checks in the envelopes.

‘Afterwards, my wife and I overheard them complaining to my [mother-in-law] that it made them feel cheap, like the wedding was a fundraiser, or a transaction.

‘My wife almost burst into tears, so I step over and clarified that money was not asked or wanted. I offered to give them their envelopes back so they could remove their money.

‘They refused since “what’s done is done”. Made the entire wedding awkward (for us and them, other folks had zero idea). Made me feel like no good deeds go unpunished.’

Many rushed to the comments to argue that a card box is ‘very common’ at weddings and does not mean you are asking for money.

One person wrote: ‘Putting out a card box for a wedding is extremely common. Almost every wedding I’ve been to has had one.

‘Giving money as a gift instead of a gift is pretty common, and usually expected. Your wife’s family is unhinged.’

Another said: ‘I was told by my venue I had to have one.’

Someone else added: ‘Yep, many venues actually require you to put out a card box for the liability reason: guests WILL bring envelopes with money in them and there needs to be a clear and safe place for them to put them.

‘Often the area where the box is put on a welcome table has a security camera pointed at it, even.’

A fourth added: ‘Yup, I used to do event decor/floristry and we kept extra card boxes on hand for this reason.

‘I think a lot of venues insist because it makes it less difficult to track down missing cards. It’s kind of a “not very secure, but somewhat better than the alternative” security measure.’

Another added: ‘Every wedding I’ve been to has had a box of some sort for cards. At no point have I felt like I must contribute (although I always do). This is very much a them issue.’

Others sugggested the couple should mail the money back to the guests or donate it to charity.

One person said: ‘When you open the cards, mail the money back to each and every one of them.’

Another said: ‘Yep just add a note saying you appreciate the thought but the box was for well wishes to be treasured in the future and not for the purpose they thought.

‘That’s it. I would have not clarified anything and done that as soon as I heard. oh you guys gave money ?

‘Sorry that was for well wishes to keep. we misunderstood each other. with a big smile on top. I hope you had a great time and let’s have other nice parties like that in the future! that’s it!’

Someone else added: ‘That’ll make them even more mad. You can’t win. I would donate to a charity of OP’s and wife’s choice and send the cash-givers thank-you notes letting them know.’

Another said: ‘Donate the money to a charity? Maybe one your wife’s family wouldn’t normally support. Then let everyone know that’s what you chose to do with the contributions.’

“I can’t date a virgin” – Ex BBN star Doyin David sparks debate with candid take on love, sex, and submission

Reality TV star and ex-BBNaija housemate Doyin David is once again the center of online buzz after her appearance on a dating-themed talk show.

In her usual unapologetic style, Doyin dropped a statement that sent shockwaves across social media:

“I can’t date a virgin. It’s not possible.”

Known for her blunt honesty and confident presence, Doyin didn’t hold back. She shared that her bold personality often makes people nervous, telling the host with a smirk:

“I make most people nervous, so I’m not surprised you are nervous.”

When asked about her current dating status, she admitted:

“It’s been a minute, to be honest. A couple of months ago. Dating in Nigeria these days is extreme sports. It’s hectic.”

Despite her hard shell, Doyin revealed a surprisingly tender side.

“I will be submissive for the right man,” she said, explaining that her biggest relationship green flags are being listened to and seeing real change when she expresses discomfort.

She also didn’t mince words when calling out how women are often immediately sexualized by men:

“Most times when a guy meets a girl, it’s very easy for them to sexualize her… What’s sex going to look like with this person, without getting to know the person. Sex is important to me, but I’m a whole human being outside of my vagina.”

Her statements are already sparking debates across Nigerian Twitter and Instagram. While some praised her openness and refusal to conform, others questioned the fairness and implications of dismissing virgins outright.

GHS urges public to observe hygiene as rains begin

By Linda Naa Deide Aryeetey

Accra, May 23, GNA – Dr Dennis Odai Laryea, Deputy Director, Public Health Division, Ghana Health Service (GHS), has urged the public to maintain hygiene and monitor food and water intake as rains and floods increase health risks.

“Whether rain or shine, contracting cholera simply means you have eaten food or drunk water contaminated with faeces,” he said.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, Dr Laryea noted that the cholera outbreak from last year remained active, with sporadic suspected cases still being recorded.

Between October 2024 and May 2025, a total of 612 confirmed cholera cases were reported across five regions.

The Central Region recorded the highest number with 270 cases, followed by Greater Accra with 200, Western Region with 135, Ashanti with five, and Eastern Region with two.

A total of 51 deaths were recorded during the period, though none occurred in May.

Dr Laryea said the number of suspected cases had dropped significantly in recent months.

“Since the beginning of May, the service has recorded six suspected cases of cholera with one confirmed, and no death recorded,” he stated.

He advised the public to wash hands with soap under running water regularly, eat warm food, drink clean water, and use hand sanitiser frequently as preventive measures.

Earlier this year, Ghana commenced its first oral cholera vaccination campaign, targeting 150,634 people in the most affected districts.

The campaign focused on individuals aged two years and above in parts of the Greater Accra, Central, Western, and Eastern regions.

The sub-national campaign in Awutu Senya East exceeded its target of 150,000 people, while the campaign in the Western Region aimed to reach 600,000 residents.

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by consuming food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), cholera is a global public health threat, indicating inequity and a lack of social and economic development.

Access to safe water, basic sanitation, and hygiene is essential to prevent cholera and other waterborne diseases. In 2023, WHO recorded 535,321 cases and 4,007 deaths from 45 countries.

Cholera is often linked to limited access to clean water, poor sanitation facilities, and inadequate hygiene, which may result from conflict, displacement, climate-related events such as floods or drought, and insufficient investment in water and sanitation infrastructure.

Most people infected with cholera experience mild or moderate diarrhoea and can be treated with oral rehydration solution (ORS). However, the disease can progress rapidly, making early treatment critical. Severe cases require intravenous fluids, ORS, and antibiotics.

Effective prevention and control require a combination of enhanced surveillance, improved water and sanitation, risk communication, community engagement, access to treatment, and oral cholera vaccination campaigns.

Thaddeus Sory accuses Godfred Dame of hypocrisy

0

Legal practitioner, Thaddeus Sory, has expressed his disapproval of former Attorney-General, Godfred Dame’s recent public statements, labelling the individual as a “cry baby” and accusing them of hypocrisy.

In a Facebook post titled “AND STILL CRYING INCONGRUOUSLY – PART ONE,” Sory addresses the lawyer’s response to his previous criticisms, which included allegations of obsession and unethical conduct.

Mr Sory refutes these claims, stating that his actions are motivated by two primary reasons:

  1. Signs that the individual is learning and may eventually change their behaviour.
  2. A commitment to not tolerating spoiled individuals.

He further critiqued the lawyer’s response, highlighting contradictions and inconsistencies in their arguments.

He pointed out the individual’s admission of representing clients affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) yet claiming that a petition they filed against the Chief Justice is driven by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mr Sory describes this as “incongruous logic.”

Additionally, Sory accuses the lawyer of hypocrisy, referencing instances where the individual publicly criticised judicial decisions, yet now decries similar criticisms from others.

He questions the ethical consistency of a lawyer who publicly denigrates judges while simultaneously seeking to represent clients in court.

The post concludes with Mr Sory expressing regret for having to address the matter publicly.

“Once again, friends and family, sorry I had to do this. Please forgive me. It is just me being silly, but not in a hard way.”

Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has expressed his excitement after earning a call-up to the Black Stars squad for the upcoming Unity Cup tournament in London.

The 32-year-old has been named in Ghana’s squad for the four-nation friendly tournament, following his impressive displays in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where he kept clean sheets against Chad and Madagascar.

His performances have earned him the role of first-choice goalkeeper, and he is expected to start Ghana’s opening match against Nigeria on May 28, 2025.

Speaking to Max TV before departing for London, Asare shared his gratitude and determination to make Ghanaians proud.

“I’m grateful to God, our supporters, and all Ghanaians for their support,” he said. “It’s not easy for a local player to earn a place in the Black Stars, and every match is tough.

So when we receive a call-up, we’re always ready to step up.”He emphasized the importance of preparation and focus ahead of the tournament. L

“We have to psyche ourselves and prepare because anything can happen at any time. Now that we’ve been given this opportunity, we must represent Ghana well and make the nation proud.

‘This has embarrassed us’ – Martin Kpebu slams Godfred Dame for role in Jakpa tape

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has strongly condemned the conduct of former Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, over his involvement in the controversial Jakpa tape.

Kpebu’s comments come in the wake of a petition filed with the General Legal Council (GLC) seeking sanctions against Dame for alleged professional misconduct, following the emergence of an audio recording and WhatsApp conversations between him and Richard Jakpa, the third accused in a high-profile criminal case involving Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.

Speaking on The Keypoints on TV3, Kpebu described Dame’s actions as unethical, embarrassing and damaging to Ghana’s criminal justice system.

“As a society, we were very clear at the time that the Attorney General had breached the rules of ethics. His statements in the tape just sought to destroy the justice system. This thing has embarrassed us. It has brought the criminal justice system so low,” he said on May 24, 2025.

The case centers on a €2.37 million financial loss to the state stemming from a 2014–2016 ambulance procurement deal with Big Sea, a company Jakpa represented.

Both Forson and Jakpa denied the charges, which include wilfully causing financial loss, abetment, and contravening the Public Procurement Act.

However, the trial took a dramatic turn when the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) released a leaked recording of private conversations between Dame and Jakpa.

The recording, admitted into evidence by the court in June 2024, appears to capture the then-Attorney General discussing Jakpa’s arrest and possibly encouraging him to shape his testimony in a way that could harm Forson.

Therefore, Kpebu emphasised that what transpired in the recording is unacceptable in democracy and would not wait until the General Legal Council declares it as unethical before he sees it as such.

“It doesn’t matter the outcome of the General Legal Council. The fact remains that as citizens, we all heard what Godfred Dame stated in that tape, and those statements are unethical. We heard it. What we heard is not anything that should be allowed in a thriving democracy such as ours,” he added.

A formal petition has since been filed with the General Legal Council (GLC), Ghana’s legal regulatory body.

The petitioner, a Ghanaian citizen named Daniel Kwame Ofosu-Appiah, is urging the GLC to investigate and sanction Dame under the Legal Profession Act, 1960 (Act 32), citing grave ethical breaches and attempts to improperly influence Jakpa’s testimony without his lawyer’s knowledge or consent.

You have a man to cuddle every night

A Nigerian woman, Teepha, has berated married women who tell her sob stories about their husbands and marriages.

The mum of two, who stated this in a Facebook post said she doesn’t pity the women because no matter how useless they deem their husbands, they at least have men to ‘sleep with every night’ as well as ‘share financial responsibility’ unlike many single women and mothers.

“Whenever a married woman comes to tell me sob story about her marriage and her husband for me to pity her, all I do is laugh. No matter how usèlèss you think your husband is or how you talk about him to attract pity. I won’t pity you. At least, you dey see man cuddle and preek to knàck every night plus MRS title that society respect so much,” she wrote.

If the man is so usèlèss like you say or claim, leave him and enter street to see what we single womèn are seeing in the dating pool.

I do literal everything for myself and pay all bills alone and you want me to pity you who is living with a man that is assisting you no matter how small?

The problem is that, a lot of women think marriage is a soft spot for every woman but it is not in reality. If you open eyes waa marry a financially struggling màn to answer MRS, be ready to work and support yourself!

No need to complain or look for pity! All of us know what marriage with a financially struggling man looks like! Just work and support yourself while you enjoy midnight cuddle, preek and Mrs title.

I don’t pity any married woman who lives with a man. That preeq you enjoy, a lot of us no see am sis.

“If You Keep Arresting Everyone, That Power Will Leave You” — Vormawor Warns NDC

0

Private legal practitioner and social activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has issued a caution to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), urging it to avoid the missteps that cost the New Patriotic Party (NPP) public support in the past as per reports from Citinewsroom.

His comments followed the recent arrest and release of NPP youth activist, Alfred Ababio Kumi, also known as Adenta Kumi, by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

Vormawor questioned the necessity of the arrest, suggesting it may have been an overreaction to political provocation.

In a social media post on May 24, he expressed concern about the government’s increasing reliance on law enforcement to suppress dissent.

He warned that such tactics could damage the NDC’s credibility and alienate the electorate. “This feels like the umpteenth time I have to rebuke the NDC about the risk of overzealous policing,” he stated.

Vormawor argued that only arrests linked to the Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL)—a state initiative to recover stolen public assets—should be pursued.

He made it clear that while he supports accountability, targeting individuals over political propaganda is counterproductive. “If someone engages in unnecessary propaganda and you feel the need to show them where power lies… that power will leave you,” he cautioned.

He encouraged the government to maintain focus on its development agenda and not allow opposition antics to divert its attention.

According to him, prioritizing political distractions over governance would only lead to the same fate that befell the previous administration.

Rapper Ja Rule walks his daughter down the aisle as she marries her heartthrob

Rapper Ja Rule shared an emotional milestone with his family over the weekend as his daughter, Brittney Atkins, tied the knot in a heartfelt ceremony that brought out the softer side of the hip hop icon. Brittney’s groom, identified as “Tiki” on Instagram, was warmly welcomed by Ja Rule, who exchanged a handshake and a hug with his new son in law. The moment marked a symbolic passing of the torch, with Ja Rule standing in full support of the couple.

Celebrations continued into the night, with Ja Rule hitting the dance floor to share a memorable first dance with his daughter. Later, he took the microphone, not to perform, but to deliver an impromptu speech. He admitted he hadn’t written anything in advance, choosing instead to speak from the heart.

Just months earlier, the rapper had opened up about his daughter’s upcoming wedding in an interview with Page Six, saying he wasn’t planning to perform a full concert but hinted he might have a surprise or two in store for her. While he held back the bars, his presence and emotion were unmistakable.

While there were no visible tears, the moment clearly touched Ja Rule deeply, and whether or not emotions spilled behind closed doors, the day was a celebration of love, growth, and family.

Congratulations poured in across social media for Brittney and her husband, as the newlyweds began their next chapter with a proud father cheering them on.

John Mahama is not vindictive; he’s a true stateman

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams (L) and President John Dramani Mahama (R) Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams (L) and President John Dramani Mahama (R)

The General Overseer of Action Chapel International, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has praised President John Dramani Mahama, commending his statesmanship and gracious character.

According to him, the President, unlike many typical politicians, embodies a spirit of humility and is not inclined to be vindictive or seek retaliation against those who offend him, a trait he deeply admires and considers worthy of emulation.

Speaking to his congregation during a Sunday service, Archbishop Duncan-Williams also reflected on certain actions taken by individuals against the President.

He noted that, despite these challenges, the President continued to persevere and maintained cordial and open relations with such individuals, demonstrating a level of forgiveness and grace that stands in contrast to how others might have responded with vindictiveness.

“President John Dramani Mahama is a very humble man. The man is not an arrogant person neither is he vindictive. If you know what certain people did to this guy, sometimes it breaks my heart. He has proven evidence but he’s gone past it and acts like nothing has happened,” he said.

To reinforce his point, the revered preacher shared a personal account involving an individual who had previously launched verbal attacks and insults at the President while he was in opposition.

According to him, the President responded to this individual not with resentment, but with a warm embrace, an act that left the individual deeply astonished.

He further revealed that the individual later contacted him to share the encounter, expressing surprise and seeking insight into the meaning behind the President’s gracious gesture.

To him, true statesmen are those who do not hold grudges and who extend kindness even to their adversaries, regardless of their actions.

“There was a meeting the other day where I met him and somebody. This was someone who insulted this man [Mahama] when he was in opposition. He and I had spoken about it when he was in opposition. He met this guy and the guy wasn’t sure what he would do and so, he tried to dodge him.

“But he called him and gave him a hug and when I saw it I said ‘papa wei nso’ (meaning this man).

“Then later the guy said to me that he was called and given a hug asking me what the act meant. I told him ‘it’s a sign of a statesman and that he is bigger and better than you’,” he added.

‘Mahama’s sanctions on me harsher than European Union’s sanction on Russia’

Chairman Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Bosiako has expressed his dissatisfaction over what he describes as unfair treatment meted out to him by the ruling government.

According to him, the sanctions allegedly imposed on him by the government are excessively severe, which he described as “harsher than those imposed on Russia by the European Union.”

Chairman Wontumi as he is popularly known, speaking on Asempa FM on May 23, 2025, disclosed some of the sanctions he claims have been imposed on him, specifically noting that his bank accounts have been frozen, an action he says has caused him significant challenges.

“If your accounts get frozen how do you expect to survive and even eat? The sanctions President Mahama have imposed on me are more harsher than those European Union imposed on Russia. I don’t have access to any account,” he said.

The politician based in the Ashanti Region added that he will personally honor an invitation extended to him by the police and appear at their Accra premises on Monday, May 26, 2025.

“I will go to the police headquarters because they have brought me a letter. I haven’t received any letter from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB),” he indicated.

Chairman Wontumi’s statement comes on the back of an attempted arrest by security officials at his residence on Friday, May 23, 2025.

Armed security personnel, alleged to be officials from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), reportedly stormed Chairman Wontumi’s residence. Viral videos captured the scene, showing security officials, some in police uniforms and others in plain clothes alighting from white pickup trucks.

Another video showed the supposed security officials knocking and banging at the main entrance gate of Wontumi’s home.

It is not clear why the security officials were at Wontumi’s home, but the government recently suspended the mining licence of his company, Akonta Mining, accusing it of engaging in illegal mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve in the Western Region.

Chairman Wontumi has refuted the accusation, stating that he is being targeted because of his bid to run for the National Chairmanship position of the NPP.

Edudzi Tameklo on why Ghanaians don’t trust the judiciary

0

The Director of Legal Services for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Godwin Edudzi Tamaklo, who doubles as the Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has criticised Ghana’s legal and judicial institutions for what he described as selective enforcement, double standards, and complicity in undermining public trust in the rule of law, amid the ongoing impeachment proceedings against the Chief Justice.

Speaking on TV3’s Key Points programme on Saturday, May 24, 2025, Mr Tameklo described the situation as a clear case of institutional failure.

He accused the General Legal Council (GLC), the Chief Justice, and the immediate past Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame of applying the law inconsistently depending on who is involved.

Mr Tamaklo questioned the GLC’s failure to take action against Mr Dame after the release of a widely circulated recording in which the Attorney-General is alleged to be coaching an accused person on how to shape their testimony.

“The General Legal Council doesn’t need a petition to act,” he said. “Under Section 18 of the Legal Profession Act, 1960 (Act 32), they can summon any lawyer on their own motion. In 2021, they acted against Dr Dominic Ayine without a petition. So why didn’t they act on Dame? Simple. He was untouchable.”

He claimed that at the last Bar Conference in Kumasi, the controversy had become so intense that some GLC members insisted Mr Dame should apologise before addressing the gathering.

“You heard the tape yourself, a sitting Attorney-General telling an accused person how to frame testimony. That’s a violation of Rule 54 of the Legal Profession (Professional Conduct and Etiquette) Rules, 2020,” he said.

Commenting on the Chief Justice’s legal challenge seeking to disqualify Justice Gabriel Pwamang and others from sitting on the committee investigating her conduct, Mr Tamaklo said the move lacked merit and showed inconsistency in the application of legal standards.

LatexFoamPromo

“She’s claiming bias because Justice Pwamang ruled in favour of a petitioner. But in Daniel Ofori v. ECG (2023), the Supreme Court removed her from a case for the same reason, conflict of interest. That was a unanimous decision,” he said. “Now she’s doing exactly what she was once disqualified for. That’s not law, it’s desperation.”

Mr Tamaklo also questioned the attempt to remove Justice Adibu-Asiedu from the committee, noting that the Chief Justice herself empaneled him. “This is not how judicial independence works,” he said.

He also pushed back against claims that the Chief Justice could waive her right to a private hearing and opt for public proceedings, describing such arguments as flawed.

“Article 146(8) says all proceedings shall be in-camera. It doesn’t say ‘may be.’ Unlike Article 18(2), which explicitly allows a person to waive privacy rights, the framers of the Constitution deliberately left out that option in Article 146,” he said. “You can’t waive what the Constitution doesn’t permit.”

Turning to the recent police action against Alfred Kumi, the man whose petition touched on a said meeting between some members of the committee and lawyer Thaddeus Sory, Mr Tamaklo described the National Intelligence Bureau’s response as reckless and excessive.

“Kumi exaggerated claims about a so-called ‘secret dinner’ between judges. But even if his claims were untrue, does that justify 15 armed officers storming his house at dawn? This is not how you treat a citizen with a political grievance. A phone call would have sufficed,” he said.

He added that CCTV footage later showed judges and lawyers seated at separate tables in a restaurant, which he said undermined the suggestion of a planned meeting.

Mr Tamaklo concluded that the situation reflects deeper problems in the justice system that go beyond individual misconduct.

“This is why Ghanaians don’t trust the judiciary,” he said. “When a Chief Justice hires an Attorney-General caught on tape encouraging perjury, and judges apply different rules to themselves, we erode public confidence. The law must be no respecter of persons, whether you’re the Chief Justice or a market trader.”

He warned that unless legal institutions consistently follow the Constitution and their own rules, the justice system could lose its legitimacy in the eyes of the public.

“We are watching the slow corrosion of judicial credibility,” he said. “The public sees the silence, the shifting standards, and they stop believing in justice. That is the real danger.”

NPP supporters accuse government of intimidation, demand due process in Wontumi case

NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Antwi Boasiako 'Wontumi' NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Antwi Boasiako ‘Wontumi’

Supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Kumasi have strongly criticized the government over what they describe as targeted harassment of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The supporters allege that since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assumed office on January 7, 2025, Mr. Boasiako has faced a pattern of politically motivated intimidation.

They claim that such actions undermine democratic principles and are calling on President John Mahama to intervene and ensure the rule of law is upheld.

Their comments follow a raid by National Security operatives on Mr. Boasiako’s private residence at Paraku Estate in Kumasi in the early hours of Friday.

The incident drew a large crowd of NPP supporters, leading to a tense standoff between them and the security personnel, which was defused after the intervention of senior party officials.

According to sources close to Mr. Boasiako, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service had officially invited him to report for questioning on May 21.

However, the Regional Chairman responded in writing, requesting a rescheduled appearance for Monday, May 26, on health grounds.

Despite this, National Security officers proceeded to his residence this morning, days before the agreed date.

The NPP supporters insist that if the government has legitimate concerns or charges against Mr. Boasiako or any other party member, it must pursue the matter through appropriate legal channels.

They warned against the use of force or intimidation to silence dissent, stressing that such conduct poses a threat to the nation’s democratic dispensation.

Dr Bawumia explains rationale behind gold purchase progamme

Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia play videoFormer Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

The former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has explained the rationale behind his administration’s decision to implement the gold purchase programme.

According to him, the policy led to an increase in Ghana’s gold reserves from 8.7 tonnes to 30 tonnes.

He noted that rather than relying solely on loans, his government opted for gold, a natural resource that could be acquired with the local currency, resulting in the purchase of gold worth $5 billion within two years.

Speaking to members of the Young Executive Forum (YEF) during his Thank You Tour of the UK, the former Vice President said the move was a deliberate choice between economic sovereignty and dependency.

“$5 billion in gold or $3 billion in loans, we chose sovereignty. In two years, the Bank of Ghana had bought $5 billion worth of gold. Remember, we were going to the IMF just for $3 billion and going through all sorts of hoops. But in two years, we had bought $5 billion,” Dr Bawumia said.

He attributed the cedi’s relative stability to the gold reserves his government secured.

“We increased the gold reserves in Ghana from 8.7 tonnes to 30 tonnes. So, 65 years after independence, we only had 8.7 tonnes, but in just two years, we moved to 30. That is a big backing for the currency.

“Why I went for gold is that you don’t need to export to get gold. You need to export cocoa, timber, and oil to earn foreign exchange. But with gold, you just need to dig it out or pay for it with cedis. So it was a much easier way to do it,” he explained.

Dr Bawumia also criticised the current NDC administration, claiming they have failed to build on the gold reserves.

“People, after all the noise of the election, are paying attention to our reserves. That is one thing we built up to 30 tonnes. They have been in office so far, and they haven’t even increased it by one tonne, not a single one,” he said.

‘He Told Minority Not to Oppose Her’ — Edudzi on Mahama’s Confidence in Suspended CJ

0

The CEO of the National Petroleum Authority, Edudzi Tameklo, has shed light on the controversy surrounding the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, emphasizing President Mahama’s trust in her at the time of her nomination as reported by Ghana Web.

During an interview on TV3’s KeyPoints on May 24, 2025, Tameklo revealed that the President harbored no personal ill feelings toward the suspended Chief Justice.

He highlighted that when Justice Torkornoo was put forward for appointment, President Mahama fully supported her and even urged opposition members in Parliament not to block her confirmation.

“President Mahama had faith in Gertrude Torkornoo when she was nominated. He told the Minority not to oppose her appointment. So, when it came to her approval, it was unanimous,” Tameklo explained.

This unanimous approval at both the parliamentary committee and plenary sessions reflected the confidence placed in her leadership by the President.

However, Tameklo acknowledged that despite this initial support, the President could not have foreseen how Justice Torkornoo would perform once sworn into office.

The decision to suspend her, he clarified, was strictly a result of the petitions submitted and was not influenced by any personal considerations from the President.

“President Mahama had no way of knowing how the now-suspended Chief Justice would conduct herself while in office,” Tameklo added, revealing the separation between personal trust and official actions taken based on due process.

This statement comes amid ongoing debates and legal scrutiny over the legitimacy and reasons behind the suspension, with Tameklo’s remarks seeking to clarify the President’s stance and dispel assumptions of bias in the process.

Thaddeus Sory to Dame: And still crying, even more incongruously – Part I

0

1. Friends and family, thank you sincerely for the advice. I truly appreciate it. If I’m doing this, it’s for two reasons:

i. There are signs that the Cry Baby is learning, so there’s hope he might eventually turn around.

ii. We do not suffer spoilt children.

2. In a response to my last post, he screamed that:

i. I’m obsessed with him.

ii. My criticism of him is unethical.

iii. As Attorney-General, the judiciary has shown better steel and independence, never mind the many polls that say otherwise.

iv. I’ve distorted facts in my criticism.

v. I lost a case against him, the title of which he neither mentions nor clarifies.

vi. He never claimed that he’s never lost a case.

3. I honestly don’t believe Cry Baby wrote the response. For if he did, it’s quite incongruous how he admits I have NPP-affiliated clients, yet in an interview with Joy FM, insists that because I represent a client who has presented a petition against the Chief Justice, the petition is NDC driven? This is incongruous logic.

4. If he indeed wrote that piece, then it’s even more absurd that he forgot how, in October last year, he screamed in court that I couldn’t represent the Speaker of Parliament, then later screamed louder that I should be sanctioned for not showing up, after I heeded his own objection.

5. It is despicably incongruous that he forgets how, on each of these occasions, he went hoarse in the media, ranting about it. That’s when I decided to feed his obsession with me by giving him something to chew on. And clearly, it worked.

6. That’s why, in his last Joy FM interview, he couldn’t end without mentioning my name. That’s how Cry Baby earned my last response.

7. Every time I’ve written about him, it has been in reaction to his refusal to leave my name out of his media outbursts. My name grips him like an epileptic seizure. So again, who’s obsessed with whom? To every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

8. And I’m obsessed with you? How can I be obsessed with a lawyer I taught elementary civil procedure in open court just last October?

9. Even after that a public lesson, you goofed again on the most basic principle on injunction law, and practice, prompting a judicial correction from Amadu JSC. See paragraphs 31 and 32 of his judgment in the Assafuah case.

10. And really? I’m obsessed with a lawyer whose charge against Jakpa in a case he described as “controversially decided” was exposed as flawed? Who raised the legal point the Court of Appeal upheld against you? That was me. Do not let put out the charge sheets

11. You claim the decision would have been overturned by the Supreme Court if not for the Attorney-General’s withdrawal of the appeal…. That certainty is revealing. Let me just add: the notice of appeal was incompetent. If you want to know why, I’ll be happy to explain.

12. Like the word “incongruous,” Cry Baby must have a severely warped understanding of the word “obsessed.” Imagine reaching all the way back to 2009 to dig up a case whose title you can’t even name, just to prove you beat me in court. Meanwhile, the Jakpa case was just last year. Who was Jakpa’s lawyer? You are right, that was me…

13. And to think that Cry Baby’s vocabulary warehouse stocks just one word… you know it. How could I possibly be obsessed with him, let alone jealous?

14. Did Cry Baby really say my criticism violates professional ethics? Another reason to doubt he penned that response himself.

15. What could be more unethical than a lawyer who takes to radio and social media ALL THE TIME, to prosecute his cases in public? There’s a specific rule that forbids it. See Rule 38 of our professional conduct guidelines. Yet somehow, you’ve never been sanctioned by the General Legal Council [GLC].

16. What rule says you can’t knock some sense into a Cry Baby’s head? Still waiting to be disciplined. Is it ethical for a lawyer to lose a case in the Court of Appeal and without even reading the judgment take to the radio to criticise and literally vilify the Judges? Not sure which rule covers that? Ask me, I’ll tell you.

17. Reading from the Cry Baby, you can’t help but sense his delusion. He needs a serious resetting. The entire response is an exercise in self- adulation. Reality is coming and the next parts will help him find it.

18. Once again, friends and family, sorry I had to do this. Please forgive me. It is just me being silly, but not in a hard way.

Osei Tutu SHS wins 2025 ACE Spoken Word Competition

0

Osei Tutu Senior High School has emerged as the winner at the 2025 ACE Spoken Word Competition, walking away with a cash prize of GHS 7,000.

The grand finale, held on May 23, 2025, took place at the KNUST Great Hall Auditorium in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

The Spoken Word programme focuses not only on education but also on initiatives that promote English literacy and foster confidence within local communities, particularly among students across all fields of study.

Kumasi Academy was named first runner-up, earning a cash prize of GHS 5,000. The second edition of the competition featured a compelling showdown among four finalist schools: Osei Tutu SHS, Kumasi Academy, KNUST SHS, and Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ SHS.

Organised by ACE Consult in collaboration with US Embassy, the event was themed “Volunteerism.” Marilyn Owusu, who doubles as the CEO of ACE Consult and Executive Director of American Corner-Kumasi, emphasised the importance of the initiative, highlighting how it provided a platform for young participants to express their perspectives on the value and impact of volunteer work.

“A lot of people in Ghana do things expecting to be paid, and when they aren’t, they get angry. It is the spirit of volunteerism that transforms a nation,” she stated.

Matthew K. Asada, the Press Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Accra, expressed his satisfaction with the programme.

“It’s amazing. I initially thought it might be just one person performing, but then I saw the first part—it was more theatrical… Then came the second part, which was the Q&A session, followed by the third section, which involved impromptu and improvisation. It was quite impressive,” he stated.

Sophia Akuffo calls for morality, excellence, and service to sustain Ghana’s democracy

0

Former Chief Justice of Ghana, Her Ladyship Justice Sophia A. B. Akuffo, has issued a clarion call for a return to moral values, a pursuit of excellence, and a renewed spirit of service as the foundation for sustainable democratic governance.

Speaking at the Methodist University of Ghana to commemorate the institution’s 25th anniversary, Justice Akuffo delivered a thought-provoking lecture on the theme “Morality, Excellence and Service in Sustainable Democratic Governance.”

Drawing on decades of legal and civic experience, Justice Akuffo emphasized that democracy must be more than elections and institutions—it must be rooted in ethical leadership, civic responsibility, and national character.

We must breathe moral life into our Constitution,” she urged, warning that without a steadfast moral compass, governance risks becoming transactional, complacent, and disconnected from the people it serves.

In a wide-ranging and introspective address, the former Chief Justice challenged both citizens and leaders to reject mediocrity, corruption, and impunity, and instead build a democratic culture defined by integrity, discipline, and accountability.

Frank Asamoah shares a chilling account of how he lost his sight in a car accident play videoFrank Asamoah shares a chilling account of how he lost his sight in a car accident

Young Ghanaian, Frank Asamoah, has shared a chilling account of how he lost his sight in a devastating car accident and was mistakenly declared dead.

In an emotional interview with Zionfelix, shared on social media on May 24, 2025, Frank revealed how his dream of becoming a doctor was abruptly cut short after the accident, which also claimed the lives of several others.

Frank, then a Level 100 student at the College of Health and Well-Being in Kintampo, explained that the accident occurred after he had gone home to collect foodstuffs and a document needed for his school registration.

“My provisions had finished, so I had to return home for some. I also needed a document to attach to some files for my registration. After getting home, I decided to buy groceries for school that evening, because the journey from Kumasi to Kintampo takes about three hours, and I needed to set off at dawn,” he recounted.

“After buying the groceries, I had an accident on my way back. I didn’t see anything again. According to what my mother and eyewitnesses told me, the vehicle I was in collided with a truck. I was also told that the driver’s head was severed instantly.”

Frank went on to describe the horrifying condition of the other passengers involved.

“The head of the passenger next to me was crushed like a sardine tin. Another passenger, who was sitting in the back seat, suffered a spinal cord injury. My eyes were plucked out. Part of my brain was damaged, I lost several teeth, and the bone in my right arm was exposed,” he said.

Even more shocking was the revelation that doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital declared Frank dead upon his arrival.

“I was taken to Komfo Anokye Hospital and pronounced dead. My body was prepared and taken to the mortuary,” he said.

It was only after a mortuary attendant noticed movement that his case took a miraculous turn.

“The mortuary personnel returned to tell the doctors that I was still alive — they had observed body movements,” he added.

Frank also recounted being unconscious for an entire month.

“I was unconscious for a month. When I regained consciousness, I asked my mother if I had written my exams in school. She only told me I had malaria and was in the hospital. It was much later that I came to understand the extent of the damage I had suffered.”

Passengers split on fare cut, drivers demand reduction in goods and services

0

Transport fares to go down by 15% Transport fares to go down by 15%

Passengers and drivers at the Tema Station in Accra have expressed different opinions about the 15 per cent public transport fare reduction, which will be implemented nationwide on Saturday, May 24.

The directive aims to reflect recent reductions in fuel prices and the strengthening of the cedi, but has drawn varied responses from stakeholders.

Frederick Boakye Gyimah, the Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Burma Camp Branch, said that while drivers were informed of the directive, many were unhappy about it.

He noted that fare reductions based solely on fuel prices ignored persistent increases in spare parts and maintenance costs.

Gyimah observed that due to the low patronage at the terminal, vehicles frequently departed without being fully loaded, and feared that a full implementation of the directive would affect earnings.

He said the new fares -GH¢6.80 down to GH¢6.50 -would be applied from Monday, with passenger consultation to allow them (drivers) to maintain the partial loading of their vehicles at the terminal.

However, if passengers resisted, the full 15 per cent cut would be enforced, even if it delayed departures.

Okpoti Sowah, a driver and former union executive at La-Tema Station, echoed Gyimah’s views.

He said though, that new fares were being charged, the lack of corresponding reductions in goods and services created an imbalance.

He said notices and updated fare lists had been posted to avoid conflict with passengers.

Comfort Tackie, a trader in bags, told the Ghana News Agency that her fare from Caprice to Accra had dropped from GH¢6.00 to GH¢5.00, saying that would ease her financial burden.

She urged the government to intensify interventions in addressing Ghana’s broader economic challenges.

Samuel Okyere, a dealer in phone accessories, said that though his fare was yet to be reduced, he was pleased with the government’s decision, anticipating relief in subsequent trips.

He expressed the belief that the change would support his savings.

Solomon Boateng, a trader in sunglasses, was less optimistic, saying the impact on his finances would be negligible.

He, however, acknowledged a fare drop from GH¢7.80 to GH¢7.00 from his Dansoman, Gleeferesidence to Accra Tema Station.

Sarah Doku, a fruit and vegetable seller who commutes from Agege to Tema Station, has yet to benefit from the reduction.

As of Saturday morning, she said there was no reduction in the GH¢7.00 fare, which resulted in confrontations between passengers and drivers and their “mates”.

Although she expected traders to reduce prices to correspond to the fare reduction, she noted that any benefit from transport savings would be neutralised by lowering prices of her goods.

A joint statement by the GPRTU and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) announced the nationwide fare reduction, urging all commercial operators to comply and display revised fares at the terminals.

The statement, signed by Godfred Abulbire and Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, General Secretaries of the GPRTU and GRTCC, respectively, called on commuters and drivers to cooperate for a smooth implementation of the directive.

Pupils of Yapei Presby Primary School lie on bare floor to study

Pupils of Yapei Presby Primary School in the Central Gonja District of the Savannah Region study on the bare floor due to the lack of furniture.

The learners are compelled to lie on their bellies or sit on the bare floor to write and study.

Yapei Presby Primary has two blocks, A and B, which have a 340 and 319 student population, respectively.

Channel One News’ visit to the school revealed that the school has been in a deplorable state, with the cemented floor in the classrooms of the school worn off, doors and windows not in good shape.

John Fuseini, PTA and SMC chairman, said they have been battling with this situation for a very long time, and some residents have shown concern by providing and assisting the school, but the situation is now unbearable.

He added that the school lacks teaching staff, which affects teaching and learning activities in the school.

“Our school lacks teachers, furniture. It also needs renovation. Indeed last three years, we did our best as PTA, but it wasn’t enough,” he said.

Abdulai Abdul Mumin, Senior Prefect of Yapei Presby Primary, is appealing to the government and stakeholders to come to their aid to help them with the furniture and a KG block.

“We are pleading with the Member of Parliament, the District Assembly and the government to support us with a classroom,” he said.

Iddi Kamil, Assembly member Yapei Electoral Area and Presiding Member Central Gonja District Assembly, indicated that the school has teachers’ bungalows, which are now a death trap which has resulted in the situation that the teachers are compelled to rent and stay far from the school, which also delays teaching and learning activities.

“The teachers do not want to stay in. It is a death trap now. Teachers resort to renting from town. Others stay far, so they come to school very late. We are calling on the government and other organisations to help us,” he said.

FDA seizes illicit tobacco products from 5 shops in Accra

0

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has seized quantities of illicit tobacco and related products during a swoop at several targeted locations in Accra.

The operation, carried out on yesterday, was aimed at clamping down on shops known for the illegal sale and distribution of tobacco products, particularly those considered attractive to the youth.

During the operation, the FDA confiscated a wide range of unapproved products from five shops.

These included shisha flavors, cigarettes, vapes, cigars, nitrous oxide canisters, and tobacco wraps.

All the products seized were either unregistered or had expired registrations, making their sale illegal under Ghanaian law.

Speaking to the media after the exercise, the Head of the Tobacco Products Department at the FDA, Mrs Jemima Odonko, underlined that the swoop formed part of activities lined up to commemorate this year’s World No Tobacco Day.

She explained that the FDA regularly undertakes such enforcement activities, but this particular one was special because of its connection to the international anti-tobacco campaign observed every year on May 31.

Mrs Odonko further emphasised the dangers of tobacco and related products, pointing out that there was no safe form of tobacco.

She warned that even synthetic alternatives, such as e-cigarettes, nicotine pouches, and flavoured vapes, are equally harmful.

According to her, these products are often presented as safer options, especially to young people, but in reality, they are toxic and not approved for sale in Ghana.

Additionally, she explained that many of the products seized during the swoop had been smuggled into the country through illegal means.

“These items are often marketed in attractive packaging and with sweet flavours to appeal to young consumers, creating the false impression that they are harmless,” she stressed.

Mrs Odonko stated that the theme for this year’s World No Tobacco Day is ‘Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing the Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products.’

Obaakrowa D/A students fear academic disruption amid rains

It is often said that education is the key to success, but for the students of Obaakrowa D/A Basic School, that key may be hard to turn.

In Obaakrowa, a small farming community in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, children are forced to study under trees due to the lack of classroom infrastructure.

As the rainy season approaches, concerns are growing that their already fragile learning environment could be further disrupted.

At first glance, Obaakrowa D/A Basic School in the Ga South Municipality seems to have classroom blocks. But a closer look tells a different story

Roofs are in bad shape, as a result, students from JHS 1 to JHS 3 are now forced to study under trees, in the open air, exposed to the harsh elements.

Their dreams hang in the balance. Whiteboards and school bags lean against tree trunks. With no walls to shield them and no roof above, learning happens not in classrooms, but on wooden desks set in the dust.

“When the sun shines and you are writing, it becomes really hard. Sometimes you have to push your desk to find a better spot,” a student told Channel One News

More importantly, as the rainy season sweeps across the country, bringing life to farms and empty wells, it also threatens to wash away the dreams of children in Obaakrowa, a small farming community in the Greater Accra Region.

Here, beneath the open skies and the shade of ageing trees, Students gather daily to learn not in classrooms, but on wooden desks placed in the dust. But with the rains now upon them, their fragile learning environment is on the brink of collapse. Simply, when it rains, lessons stop. When the sun is too hot, concentration drops. Whichever way, students are worried.

Malaria, cold, fungal infections, and skin rashes are just a few of the health risks students face due to prolonged exposure to harsh weather.

Assembly Member for the area, Gilbert Kwame Afekpe, has expressed deep concern about the growing health implications, especially as the rains set in.

The concern is even greater for final-year students preparing for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). Their future rests on exams they must study for outdoors.

Assembly member for the area, Gilbert Kwame Afekpe, is urging authorities to intervene, pleading for the construction of additional classrooms and a new block for the JHS and primary departments.

“I am pleading to the government and relevant authorities to come to our aid and give us support,” he said.

Let’s unite in pursuit of justice, reparations

0

President John Dramani Mahama has urged African leaders, civil society organisations, youth groups, and members of the diaspora to unite in the pursuit of justice and reparations for Africans and people of African descent.

In his Africa Day 2025 message, Mahama emphasised the need for collective action to heal historical wounds and unlock the full potential of Africa’s people.

“Let us work together to build a future where justice prevails, where the wounds of the past are healed, and where the potential of every African and person of African descent is fully realised,” he stated.

Mahama stressed that reparations are not just about financial compensation but about acknowledging the deep and lasting impact of slavery, colonialism, and neo-colonialism.

He called for official apologies from institutions responsible for historical injustices, debt relief for African nations, and the return of stolen cultural artifacts.

“We seek justice—justice that encompasses a comprehensive range of measures, including addressing the crippling debt burden that continues to stifle economic growth in many African nations, a direct consequence of exploitation and unfair trade practices,” he noted.

He also highlighted the importance of investing in education to deepen understanding of African history and contributions to the world, urging leaders to engage in meaningful dialogue and advocate tirelessly for reparatory justice.

“Let Africa Day 2025 be a turning point. Let us reaffirm our commitment to building a continent of prosperity, opportunity, and equality for all our people,” Mahama declared.
