Spain winger Nico Williams has signed a new 10-year contract with Athletic Bilbao.
The 22-year-old had been heavily linked with Barcelona, while German club Bayern Munich were also speculated to be interested in his services.
His previous deal with Bilbao was scheduled to run out in 2027 but he has now extended his terms with them until 30 June, 2035.
The Spanish club have said, external that Williams’ release clause, which is believed to have been €62m (£53m),, external has also increased by 50%.
“When decisions have to be made, for me, what weighs most is the heart. I’m where I want to be, with my people, this is my home,” said Williams.
Williams has come through the ranks at Bilbao, where his older brother Inaki is also a player, and made his debut for the club aged 18 in April 2021.
He has scored 31 goals in 167 appearances for the club and helped them finish fourth in La Liga last season as they qualified for the 2025-26 Champions League.
Williams also helped Spain win Euro 2024, scoring in the 2-1 victory over England in the final.
This announcement comes after it was understood that Barcelona had agreed personal terms with the forward which led to Athletic fans erasing Nico Williams from a mural featuring him and Inaki.
It is also just over a week after Athletic said they had met with La Liga to find out about Barcelona’s “ability to sign players” amid the Nou Camp club’s financial issues.
Athletic Bilbao added they had “legitimate interest in accessing the relevant information after FC Barcelona sporting director Deco publicly acknowledged that they will try to sign a player from our first team”.
“Deco’s statements add to the public statements made by FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta himself, admitting that the Blaugrana club ‘is working to be within the 1:1 rule’ and that, therefore, it is not currently within the parameters of said rule for registering players.”
The ‘1:1 rule’ states that Barcelona can only spend as much as their income and accounts allow, with La Liga calculating a limit based on the club’s expected income.

The government of Ghana and the African Development Bank (AfDB) have signed a Letter of Intent to develop the Volta Economic Corridor, a transformative initiative under Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme (24H+).
The agreement, which was signed on Wednesday, July 3 in Accra, outlines a strategic plan to reposition Lake Volta as a central logistics and industrial hub. It is aimed at boosting Ghana’s export capacity, promoting regional integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and facilitating trade with landlocked neighbours such as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
The project will be implemented in collaboration with the 24H+ Secretariat and the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), with the AfDB committing to explore co-financing options and help mobilise additional funding from private and development partners. The initiative forms a critical part of Ghana’s efforts to operationalise its 24-hour production policy, which seeks to enhance productivity and create jobs through strategic public-private partnerships.
Speaking at the signing ceremony on July 3, 2025, Presidential Advisor and Head of the 24H+ Secretariat, Augustus Goosie Tanoh, described the partnership as a bold step forward. “This partnership signals Ghana’s commitment to mobilise transformative capital, world-class expertise, and public-private partnerships to drive our 24-hour production ambition and unlock export competitiveness,” he stated.
He added that the initiative is designed to be private-sector led, with government seed capital unlocking greater pools of private investment. “AfDB’s collaboration with GIIF and the Secretariat gives us confidence that we can deliver projects that create jobs, raise incomes, and position Ghana as a leading trade and industrial hub under AfCFTA,” Mr Tanoh added.
Under the agreement, the GIIF will serve as the principal infrastructure anchor, overseeing the creation of three Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) that will focus on key components of the corridor: inland water transport and port infrastructure, agro-ecological parks and irrigation systems, and lakeside industrial parks with logistics zones.
Nana Dwemoh Benneh, CEO of the GIIF, reaffirmed the fund’s role in bridging government efforts with private sector capital. He expressed confidence in the ability of the GIIF, supported by government backing, to attract the investment needed to deliver the project.
The Director for Infrastructure and Urban Development at the AfDB, Mike Salawou, who signed on behalf of the bank, underscored the importance of the project for Africa’s infrastructure-led development agenda. “The African Development Bank welcomes this opportunity to deepen our collaboration with Ghana by working closely with the 24H+ Secretariat and the GIIF to support the success of the Volta Economic Corridor project,” he said.
The Volta Economic Corridor is expected to enhance Ghana’s inland logistics, industrial output, and agricultural value chains. It will also serve as a model for regional infrastructure and trade integration in line with Agenda 2063, the African Union’s blueprint for sustainable development.
The project aligns with AfDB’s core development priorities, which include promoting food security, industrialisation, and regional integration. It is viewed as a flagship venture that exemplifies the 24H+ Programme’s goal of translating national ambitions into bankable and high-impact economic projects.
Some compared the designs to the awe-inspiring fictional city of Wakanda
Plans for a futuristic city in Senegal dreamt up by the singer Akon have been scrapped and instead he will work on something more realistic, officials say.
“The Akon City project no longer exists,” Serigne Mamadou Mboup, the head of Senegal’s tourism development body, Sapco, told the BBC.
“Fortunately, an agreement has been reached between Sapco and the entrepreneur Alioune Badara Thiam [aka Akon]. What he’s preparing with us is a realistic project, which Sapco will fully support.”
Known for his string of noughties chart hits, Akon – who was born in the US but partly raised in Senegal – announced two ambitious projects in 2018 that were supposed to represent the future of African society.
The first was Akon City – reportedly costed at $6bn (£5bn). It was to run on the second initiative – a brand new cryptocurrency called Akoin.
Initial designs for Akon City, with its boldly curvaceous skyscrapers, were compared by commentators to the awe-inspiring fictional city of Wakanda in Marvel’s Black Panther films and comic books.
But after five years of setbacks, the 800-hectare site in Mbodiène – about 100km (60 miles) south of the capital, Dakar – remains mostly empty. The only structure is an incomplete reception building. There are no roads, no housing, no power grid.
“We were promised jobs and development,” one local resident told the BBC. “Instead, nothing has changed.”
Meanwhile the star’s Akoin cryptocurrency has struggle to repay its investors over the years, with Akon himself conceding: “It wasn’t being managed properly – I take full responsibility for that.”
There had also been questions over whether it would even be legal for Akoin to operate as the primary payment method at Akon City. Senegal uses the CFA franc, which is regulated and issued by the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO), and like many central banks has expressed opposition to cryptocurrency.
The plans for Akon City had been sweeping.
Phase one alone was to include a hospital, a shopping mall, a school, a police station, a waste centre, and a solar plant – all by the end of 2023.
Sitting on Senegal’s Atlantic Coast, Akon’s high-tech, eco-friendly city was supposed to run entirely on renewable energy.
But despite Akon’s insistence in a 2022 BBC interview that the project was “100,000% moving”, no significant construction followed the initial launch ceremony.
Now the Senegalese government has confirmed what many suspected – the project had stalled beyond recovery. Officials cited a lack of funding and halted construction efforts as key reasons for the decision.
Although Akon City, as it was originally imagined, has been shelved, the government says it is now working with Akon on a more “realistic” development project for the same site.
The land near Mbodiène remains of high strategic value, especially with the 2026 Youth Olympic Games approaching and increased tourism activity expected.
These plans have been shelved, and work will begin on a more realistic development at the same site in Mbodiène
Agradaa’s ‘supposed neighbor’ speaks out on alleged assaults against ‘duped’ victims
The sentencing of controversial Ghanaian prophetess Nana Agradaa has sparked fresh allegations from a neighbor in Sowutuom.
In a video shared by EDHUB on X on July 4, 2025, the woman, who claims to live near Agradaa’s residence, alleged that several victims, defrauded by Agradaa, were physically assaulted when they attempted to retrieve their lost funds.
The caption accompanying the viral video read, “Following the sentencing of Nana Agradaa, a lady claiming to be her neighbor in Sowutuom has shared accounts of victims allegedly assaulted while trying to recover their money from Agradaa’s residence.”
The neighbor recounted, “Agradaa has boys who work for her. If you go there for your money, they will beat you. If you’re not careful, you could lose your life. No one should feel sorry for her; she deserves this, and I’m happy about her arrest. Farewell to you, Agradaa.”
According to her, many of these confrontations ended in violence, creating an atmosphere of fear around Agradaa’s operations.

Abla Dzifa Gomashie and Charge d’Affaires of US Embassy Ghana, Rolf Olson
Ghana’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts and Member of Parliament for Ketu South, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, joined dignitaries and guests in marking the 249th Independence Day of the United States at a commemorative event that underscored the deepening bonds of friendship, cooperation, and mutual respect between Ghana and the United States.
Representing the Government of Ghana, Gomashie conveyed warm felicitations on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana to President Donald Trump and the American people.
In a speech laced with goodwill and shared aspirations, she applauded the United States for its enduring commitment to liberty, democracy, and innovation—values that have anchored its global leadership for nearly two and a half centuries.
She paid tribute to the strong and evolving Ghana–US relationship, which she described as “rooted in mutual respect, shared democratic ideals, and robust economic collaboration.”
Dzifa Gomashie highlighted the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) as a cornerstone of this partnership, noting its significant contributions to Ghana’s export growth, particularly in the textile, agriculture, and value-added manufacturing sectors.
AGOA, she said, has empowered small and medium-sized Ghanaian enterprises to access global markets and contribute meaningfully to the country’s economic development.
In a poignant reflection, Gomashie quoted both President Trump and the late Ghanaian statesman Kofi Annan, reinforcing the importance of international cooperation and shared humanity in addressing global challenges.
She concluded her remarks with optimism about the future of Ghana–US relations, emphasising the importance of people-to-people connections and inclusive development.
The Charge d’Affaires of US Embassy Ghana, Rolf Olson, in turn, welcomed guests to the celebration and expressed appreciation to the sponsors and partners who supported the event.
Drawing historical parallels between the US and Ghana, both former colonies now thriving democracies, the speaker noted the symbolic convergence of the US Independence Day with Ghana’s Founders’ Day, both observed on July 4.
The address also referenced recent political transitions in both countries, where former presidents were re-elected after defeating sitting vice presidents, illustrating the dynamic and resilient nature of democratic governance.
Olson reaffirmed the strong partnership between the two nations in sectors including health, agriculture, education, security, and trade.
The speech praised ongoing bilateral initiatives that have improved lives and strengthened institutions on both sides, with AGOA again highlighted as a key driver of economic ties.
Both speakers concluded with a renewed commitment to deepening collaboration in areas of mutual interest, and to sustaining the long-standing friendship between Ghana and the United States.
The Ghana Police Service has passed out 545 recruits, comprising 298 females and 247 males, at the Ashanti Regional Police Training School in Kumasi.
Speaking at the passing-out ceremony on Friday, July 4, the Director-General of Services at the Ghana Police Service, COP Dr. Ernest Kwabena Owusu, emphasised the critical role the police will play in supporting the government’s 24-hour economy initiative.
He revealed that a special security unit has been established at the Police Headquarters to support this policy direction.
“The Ghana Police Service has a cardinal role to play. The police will be expected to provide the needed security to ensure that the citizenry and everyone are well protected at all times. In line with its proactive measures, the Police Administration has established a new unit at the Headquarters known as the 24-Hour Economy Security Secretariat to support this effort.”
He urged the recruits to serve with humility, integrity, and diligence. Dr. Owusu also cautioned them against intimidating the public, reminding them of their responsibility to uphold peace and ensure public trust in the service.

Media personality Afia Tagor has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to reduce the 15-year jail term handed to Agradaa, a televangelist convicted of financial crimes. Speaking on the July 4 edition of the Onua Maakye show, Afia Tagor described Agradaa’s sentence as harsh and urged the President to intervene.
“We are begging you to reset Agradaa’s jail term as part of the wider national reset agenda. We would accept two years or even one and a half years like that,” Afia Tagor pleaded. She also appealed to First Lady Lordina Mahama to plead on behalf of the embattled televangelist, saying, “You knew she would go to jail when she came to the Thanksgiving event and said she would be content even if she went to hell or passed away after hugging you on that same day. So, we are begging Mrs Lordina, please speak to the president on our behalf.”
Agradaa, founder of Heaven Way Church, was sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labor for charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretenses after claiming to possess spiritual powers to double people’s money.
The case has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some questioning the fairness of the sentence while others believe she deserves the punishment.
Nico Williams has extended his Bilbao contract to 2035
In a stunning twist that has rocked Barcelona’s summer plans, Nico Williams has turned his back on a move to the Camp Nou and instead committed his long-term future to Athletic Bilbao, penning a blockbuster new contract that runs until 2035.
The 22-year-old winger, who has been heavily tipped to join Barça this summer, chose loyalty over glamour, declaring in his announcement:
“When it comes to making decisions, for me, the most important thing is to listen to your heart. I am where I want to be, with my people. This is my home.”
Williams, a product of Bilbao’s revered youth system, has made 167 senior appearances for the club, racking up 31 goals and 30 assists.
He played a key role in their Copa Del Rey triumph last two seasons and will now lead the Basque side into next season’s Champions League campaign.
Barcelona were reportedly so confident of landing Williams that they had already agreed personal terms with the Spain international.
But the Catalan giants’ well-documented financial woes and a preference to spread his transfer fee in instalments left the door wide open for Bilbao to pounce.
Adding insult to injury for Barça, Williams’ new contract comes with a release clause that has shot up by more than 50 per cent, jumping from €58 million (£50m) to an eye-watering new figure that could keep suitors at bay for years to come.
European heavyweights Bayern Munich and Arsenal were also monitoring the winger’s situation, but Williams’ commitment to his boyhood club sends a clear message: for now, San Mamés is where his heart lies.
With the Basque star off the table, Barcelona’s hunt for a new wide man has hit a major snag.
The club will likely have to pivot towards other targets, with Manchester United’s out-of-favour Marcus Rashford, fresh from a loan spell at Aston Villa, once again emerging as a potential option.

Nigeria is mourning the loss of one of its football greats after former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai passed away aged 61 following a period of illness.
Widely known by fans as Dodo Mayana, Rufai was a towering figure for Nigeria’s golden generation of the 1990s, remembered for his safe hands, commanding presence, and calm demeanour between the posts.
Born in Lagos, Rufai enjoyed an illustrious international career spanning 15 years, earning 65 caps for the Super Eagles between 1983 and 1998.
He played at two FIFA World Cups, in 1994 and 1998, and was an integral part of the iconic Nigerian side that lifted the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy in Tunisia in 1994, beating Zambia 2-1 in the final.
Announcing his passing on Thursday, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) described Rufai as a “giant of Nigerian football” and said his legacy “lives on between the sticks and beyond.”
NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi called his death “really shocking,” adding that the nation had lost not only a football icon but also an inspiration to generations of Nigerian goalkeepers.
Rufai’s death marks another heartbreaking loss from Nigeria’s famous 1994 AFCON-winning squad, following the deaths of Stephen Keshi, Rashidi Yekini, Wilfred Agbonavbare, Thompson Oliha and Uche Okafor.
After starting out at home with clubs including Stationery Stores and Femo Scorpions, Rufai’s career took him overseas to Benin, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal, making him one of the early trailblazers for Nigerian players abroad.
Former team-mates and current players have paid tribute to the late icon. Nigerian legend Nwankwo Kanu wrote, “We lost an African legend Peter Rufai. May his soul rest well. May your spirit continue to inspire all of us and future generations.”
Current Super Eagles forward Ahmed Musa added, “The nation mourns a hero. Your heroic reflexes and unwavering presence between the posts brought us moments of pride on the world stage.”

Patapaa’s ex-wife, Liha Miller, is gearing towards a second marriage with her Nigerian boyfriend, Ikem Casey
In a TikTok video, the musician’s ex-wife announced her engagement to her partner weeks after her divorce from her ex-husband was finalised
Liha Miller’s engagement to her boyfriend triggered reactions from fans, who congratulated her in the comment sections
According to a report by YEN news on Friday, July 4, 2025, popular Ghanaian musician Patapaa’s ex-wife, Liha Miller, has announced her engagement to her Nigerian boyfriend, Ikem Casey.
The German-based content creator recently took to her official TikTok page to make the announcement and share a video of her and her fiancé celebrating their engagement after his proposal.
Liha Miller also flaunted her engagement ring as she and her soon-to-be husband, Ikem Casey, shared their excitement while sitting on their bed inside their plush room in Lagos, Nigeria.
In the caption of her social media post, she wrote:
Liha Miller’s engagement to her Nigerian partner, Ikem Casey, comes a few weeks after her marriage to her ex-husband, Swedru-based musician Patapaa, ended after years of separation.
In an interview with blogger and road manager for Keche, Bessa GH, on Thursday, May 22, 2025, she shared that a Ghanaian court had granted her and Patapaa’s request for a divorce.
She stated that she and her ex-husband had previously tied the knot at the same court in 2021. She said she was unable to participate in the divorce proceedings in Ghana due to her busy schedule and residency in Germany.
Liha Miller added that she hired a Ghanaian lawyer and another individual to represent her in court to finalise her divorce from musician Patapaa.
The couple had been separated for about three years. They got married in a beautiful traditional ceremony at the musician’s hometown, Agona Swedru, in the Central Region of Ghana, after a few years of dating.
However, the couple’s marriage ended a year later in 2022, with Liha leaving Ghana to return to Germany. In an interview, she explained why she and her ex-husband did not work out as she had hoped.
In 2024, she announced that she had entered a romantic relationship with her fiancé after she shared photos of them getting cosy on social media.
Since the separation, Liha has been focused on her career as a content creator and has collaborated with various Ghanaian and Nigerian comic stars to shoot skits.
A former Suame Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Agyemang, has alleged that Frank Adu, the former Managing Director of Cal Bank, used a recent television interview to settle personal scores with President Nana Akufo-Addo and former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
The ex-NPP youth leader described Mr Adu’s remarks as politically motivated and factually inaccurate.
“He only sought to settle personal scores with Akufo-Addo and Ken Ofori-Atta,” the former organiser stated in a strongly worded release, reacting to Mr Adu’s appearance on .
He questioned the motives behind Mr Adu’s criticisms, suggesting they were rooted in resentment rather than objective analysis.
He added that Mr Adu’s narrative ignored the facts and contributions of the NPP administration, particularly its efforts to prevent the collapse of the banking sector—an intervention which, he claimed, indirectly protected Adu’s own legacy and investment in Cal Bank.
“It is very obvious he is now enjoying the benefits from his long service at Cal Bank because the NPP administration intervened to safeguard his investments,” he stated.
While acknowledging Mr Adu’s standing in the financial sector, the former NPP youth organiser urged him to set aside personal grievances.
“It is very sad that Mr Frank Adu had the audacity to make such misrepresentations on national media… This is a shame coming from someone who is considered part of the ‘establishment’ of the banking sector in Ghana,” he concluded.
Some strange bones, believed to be those of a human, were found hanging in the Primary six classroom of Dwomo Methodist Primary School in the Shama District of the Western Region.
The bones which were tied with a blue nylon rope to a nail in the classroom were seen on Wednesday morning.
The pupils and teachers of the basic school were left worried and traumatized following the discovery of the strange bones.
The incident subsequently led to the disruption of academic activities.
Daily Guide Network gathered that the incident also left the entire Dwomo Community in a state of fear and anxiety.
“An eyewitness said, “The pupils arrived at school in the morning and found the bones hanging in their classroom.
“A blue rope was used to keep the bones fixed. We still do not know the culprit or culprits,” the eyewitness added.
According to sources, the teachers quickly informed the executives of the Parents’ Association who came to lock the affected classroom.
‘Academic work was disrupted as all the Teachers and pupils were traumatized by the scene”, they noted.
The Chairman of the School Management Committee (SMC), Solomon Egyir, said steps were being taken to address the situation and prevent future occurrences of such incidents.
“The classroom where the bones were found was locked because everyone was terrified and no one touched the bones,” he said.
He indicated that the next step is to call an emergency meeting of all parents to inform them of what has happened.
“We are also considering engaging a spiritualist to help with the necessary rituals to clear the classroom for effective academic work to resume,” he added.
Meanwhile, the investigation to ascertain the motive behind the purported mysterious act continues.

Peter Millea said the Diogo Jota chant was regularly sung in the stands even when the forward was not playing
One mark of how popular Diogo Jota became with Liverpool fans was how regularly a chant about him rang out in the stands – even when he wasn’t on the pitch.
Former Liverpool councillor Peter Millea, a home and away regular, said Jota’s down-to-earth, relatable personality resonated with fellow fans as well as his talent.
He told the BBC’s Marc Gaier: “There was something about him as a player when he first came to us that he became an instant hit.
“He was one of those players you can easily take to, because of the manner in which he conducted himself on and off the pitch and the important goals he scored.”
Mr Millea said some fans at Anfield had broken into impromptu renditions of the chant while paying their respects.
“I’m sure we’ll hear it loud and clear at Wembley for the Community Shield and we’ll hear it at Preston for the first pre-season away game, you know it’ll be sung around the field against Athletic Bilbao and then during the course of the rest of the season and probably forever-more,” he said.
Ghanaian actress and film producer Salma Mumin has warned that she will take action against anyone who pirates her films, described the act as “stealing.”
Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM on July 3, 2025, Salma expressed her frustration over how common movie piracy has become in Ghana.
She said the practice is disheartening, especially for filmmakers who invest time, effort, and money into producing quality work.
“We had a Nigerian actress ranting about some piracy and I added my voice to it because I’m a producer too and I said I didn’t break even because I realised my movie was being shown somewhere in the USA on a television station without my consent. I really knew how that felt so I added my voice to the conversation. For me, I do not condone that because that’s someone’s hard-earned money that they need to make that you were stealing,” she said.
Salma shared her own experience of discovering that one of her movies had been aired on a U.S.-based television station without her permission. She said that loss of control over her work and the money involved was painful.
She added that from now on, she will personally take on anyone who tries to pirate her work.
“If I find anybody stealing my movie, I’m gonna take them on. I will take you on because it takes a lot to produce one film and it’s very painful to not even make what you’re meant to make and others are already making behind you,” she warned.
Salma also called out individuals in the entertainment industry who are involved in piracy, saying they should know better and act responsibly.
“We as entertainment personnel should understand and know better to not even do this at all because the people doing it, they understand what they’re doing,” she said.
The two arrested suspects; Paul Twumasi Ankrah (L) and Asiedu Henning (R)
An ATM card left at a crime scene in East Legon has led to the arrest of two male suspects by the Ghana Police Service in connection with the murder of a Lebanese national.
The two suspects are said to have left behind some items, including a Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) ATM card bearing the name of one of the arrested suspects, while fleeing the scene of the crime, according to a police statement released on July 3, 2025.
Providing details of the operation and the murder, the police indicated that the deceased, a 58-year-old Lebanese national, was murdered in cold blood at his residence in East Legon, Accra, on June 20, 2025.
“The Ghana Police Service has arrested two (2) suspects in connection with the murder of a Lebanese national, which occurred on Friday, 20th June 2025, at the victim’s residence at East Legon, Accra.
“The deceased, identified as Mr. Omar Mikati, aged 58, was found dead in a pool of blood. A team from the Crime Scene Management Unit (CSMU) at the Police Headquarters was promptly dispatched to collect relevant forensic evidence to support the investigation,” the police statement reported.
Police further stated that through their investigations, they discovered that the suspects, identified as Paul Twumasi Ankrah, aged 39, and Asiedu Henning, aged 32, an accomplice, murdered the deceased and fled with his Samsung mobile phone.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that the perpetrator(s) fled the scene with the deceased’s Samsung mobile phone, leaving behind other items, including two iPhones and a GCB ATM card bearing the name Paul Twumasi Ankrah. The body of the deceased was conveyed to the morgue for preservation and autopsy,” the statement added.
An intelligence-led police operation was conducted, leading to the arrest of Paul Ankrah, who, during investigations, implicated Asiedu Henning.
“Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of suspect Paul Twumasi Ankrah at Samsam Medie, who implicated his accomplice, one Asiedu Henning, alias Nana Kofi Anum. On 2nd July 2025, suspect Asiedu Henning was arrested in an intelligence-led operation at his hideout in Kutunse,” it indicated.
It went on to say, “He led police to a location where the CSMU team processed the scene and retrieved a knife that had been disposed of by the suspects. The exhibit knife is being processed for forensic analysis.”
Meanwhile, the suspects have been remanded into police custody by a presiding judge after they were arraigned before the Adabraka District Court 1. They are scheduled to reappear in court on July 8, 2025.

According to Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, known as Abronye DC, Dr. Bisiw-Kotei has been warned to halt her campaign against illegal mining, widely known as galamsey, or risk being removed from her position.
He claimed her efforts, especially in forest reserves, have been deemed outside the scope of her official duties by party insiders.
Abronye alleged that the warning followed Dr. Bisiw-Kotei’s revelation about missing excavators.
She had reportedly disclosed that out of 40 excavators seized during her operations, 33 mysteriously vanished while in police custody.
“They said she has embarrassed the government by revealing to the public that the seized excavators have gone missing,” Abronye stated.
The NPP official, speaking on Ohiani TV on July 2, further claimed that the NDC leadership is not keen on disrupting galamsey activities allegedly involving party members.
He asserted that Dr. Bisiw-Kotei had been explicitly told not to continue her anti-galamsey efforts in the forest areas, with threats of job loss if she defies the directive.
Abronye also suggested that Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, had received a similar caution after publicly expressing intent to tackle illegal mining.
“Ibrahim Murtala said on TV3 that he would fight galamsey, but he has been warned,” Abronye claimed.

Former flagbearer aspirant of the NPP, Francis Addai-Nimoh
Former flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Francis Addai-Nimoh, has described the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections as a “brutal injury” that will require time, deep introspection, and meaningful reforms to overcome.
In an interview on JoyNews monitored by GhanaWeb on Friday, July 4, 2025, he stated that the defeat has left the party in a very poor state.
“Our party, the New Patriotic Party, is now brutally injured. Once you are injured and it’s a brutal one, the recovery takes time and requires a lot of effort to fully heal,” Addai-Nimoh said.
He recalled that while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) suffered a significant loss in 2016, it was not as severe as the defeat the NPP experienced in 2024.
“For a party that seeks to return to power, this must be of great concern as we look forward to 2028. It cannot be business as usual,” he cautioned.
Addai-Nimoh further highlighted alarming regional trends that are undermining the party’s national appeal.
“As it stands now, if you go by the original ten regions of Ghana, the NPP does not have any parliamentary seats in three of them, Upper West, Volta, and effectively now, four regions in total. That must concern us greatly,” he stressed.
He emphasised that while the defeat did not entirely surprise him, the scale of the loss should be a wake-up call for the party to urgently pursue internal renewal.
“This defeat is so brutal that it will require a lot of patience, a lot of dialogue, and a great deal of level-headedness in our recovery efforts,” he said.
Looking ahead to the NPP’s National Delegates Conference scheduled for July 18–20, 2025, Addai-Nimoh revealed that the main agenda would focus on amending the party’s constitution.
He recalled a similar effort after the party’s loss in the 2008 elections, which led to critical reforms in 2009 that continue to shape the party’s operations today.
“After about 15 years, we’ve realised that the dynamics of politics have changed. Technology, demographics, and political expectations are evolving. So, it’s time to reform the constitution again,” he explained.
Addai-Nimoh noted that a key proposal expected to dominate the conference is the expansion of the party’s organisational structure from the polling station level to the national level to ensure broader participation by party members in decision-making.
“Once you’re expanding, it means bringing more people into the process. That’s what the party needs now, greater inclusion, greater ownership, and strategic restructuring,” he added.
The NPP has set up a nine-member Conference Planning Committee to lead the organisation of the Annual National Delegates Conference, scheduled to take place at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
The committee is tasked with overseeing all preparations and logistics for the crucial delegates conference, where proposed constitutional amendments will be formally considered.

High-profile British sports agent Jonathan Barnett has been accused of raping a woman more than 39 times, in a US lawsuit.
In a civil complaint lodged at a US district court in Los Angeles, the unnamed woman, referred to as “Jane Doe”, says Mr Barnett “trafficked” her from Australia to the UK in 2017, “tortured” and kept her as a “sex slave” over a six year period.
She says Mr Barnett made “repeated threats to her life and the lives of her minor children”.
The 75-year-old known for representing leading footballers including Gareth Bale and Jack Grealish, says the charges “have no basis in reality and are untrue”.
“We will vigorously defend this lawsuit through the appropriate legal process. I am looking forward to being entirely vindicated and exonerated,” a statement from his lawyers said.
Mr Barnett was ranked as the world’s most powerful sports agent in 2019 by Forbes magazine.
He co-founded London-based sports agency Stellar Group in 1994, eventually selling it to Hollywood talent agency ICM Partners in 2020. ICM was later bought by larger rival CAA in a deal that merged two of the world’s biggest agencies.
The civil case against Mr Barnett, filed on Wednesday, uses the name CAA Stellar throughout to refer to his sports agency.
According to court documents, the pair first met in the 1990s through a professional athlete in London and reconnected online and then in person in 2017.
Within a matter of weeks she relocated to the UK with her teenage children – with sports agency CAA Stellar, headed by Mr Barnett, covering moving expenses.
The filing says that upon her arrival, he told her he “owned” her and raped her in a hotel room.
Mr Barnett went on to impose strict rules to obey him at all times, referring to him as “My Master” and to “never say it hurts”, according to the lawsuit.
The complaint goes on to describe alleged degrading acts that included drinking urine or ingesting faeces.
The alleged torture also included the woman “tied up overnight without food or water”.
She says she was “trafficked, threatened, tortured, and held” in bondage in different locations throughout the world, including Los Angeles, from 2017 to 2023.
“Realising she was powerless against a dangerous predator, Ms Doe submitted to Barnett in order to avoid being severely beaten or even killed,” the lawsuit said.
“Jane Doe” is also suing Hollywood talent firm Creative Artists Agency and sports agency CAA Stellar, where Mr Barnett was executive chairman until his retirement last year.
The court documents state the CAA Stellar’s parent companies, talent agencies ICM and CAA, “failed to find and/or willfully or recklessly disregarded” that substantial payments were made between 2017 and 2023, despite the woman not being an athlete or agent.
It is claimed Barnett referred to her as “slave” in emails sent from his work account.
Court documents say Mr Barnett used his “money and power to maintain coercive control” over the woman who was “in fear of her life and the lives of her children”.
Lawyers for “Jane Doe” state the case is about “institutional abuse at the highest level”.
They are seeking compensation on her behalf.
According to LA Times, CAA said it first heard of the woman’s allegations last year when her lawyers made settlement demands – and the press inquired.
“While the complaint attempts to connect these allegations to CAA’s business, Ms Doe has never been an employee, consultant, or contractor of CAA, ICM, or Stellar, nor has she ever had any business connection to CAA, ICM, or Stellar,” CAA said in its statement.
“CAA takes any allegations of this nature seriously, and through counsel, promptly urged Ms Doe to contact law enforcement in the United Kingdom.”

The elephant was shot and wounded, but still attacked the two women, police said
Two female tourists, including a British pensioner, have been killed by a charging elephant while on safari in Zambia, police have told the BBC.
Easton Taylor, 68, from the UK, and 67-year-old Alison Taylor from New Zealand were attacked by a female elephant that was with a calf at the South Luangwa National Park, said local police chief Robertson Mweemba.
The two tourists were trampled to death by the nursing elephant after efforts by tour guides to stop it by firing shots. Both women died at the scene, he said.
The British Foreign Office said it was supporting the family of a British woman who had died in Zambia and was liaising with local authorities.
Mr Mweemba said the two women were part of a guided safari group who were walking in the park on Thursday when the elephant charged towards them at high speed.
The two tourists had stayed for four days at the Big Lagoon Camp, about 600 km (370 miles) from the capital, Lusaka, where the attack happened.
“They were moving to other camps when the elephant charged from behind. We are really sorry that we have lost our visitors,” Mr Mweemba said.
“They both died on the spot,” he added.
It is not clear whether the pair were related.
Female elephants are very protective of their calves and Zambian authorities have previously called on tourists to exercise extreme caution while observing wildlife around the country.
“It is very difficult to control the animals and tourists like feeding them,” Mr Mweemba said.
Last year, two American tourists were killed in separate attacks by elephants in the southern African country. Both cases involved elderly tourists who were in a safari vehicle when they were attacked.

Accra, July 4, GNA – Madam Dzifa Gomashie, the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, has called on the United States to renew and modernize the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) ahead of its expiration in September 2025.
She described the trade framework as essential for driving economic growth, job creation, and poverty reduction across Africa.
Speaking at the 249th Independence Day celebration of the United States held in Accra, the Minister said Ghana joined many voices across the continent in urging the U.S. Congress to act swiftly to extend the legislation.
That, she added, had provided duty-free access for qualifying African exports to the U.S. market since 2000.
“AGOA remains a critical mechanism for deepening U.S.-African trade, reducing poverty and driving shared prosperity within a fair, rules-based global economy,” she said.
“We are equally eager to explore emerging trade and investment frontiers in renewable energy, digital innovation, pharmaceuticals and green industrialization.”
She noted that since its inception, AGOA had opened meaningful opportunities for Ghanaian businesses, particularly in textiles and apparel, agriculture, and value-added manufacturing, by improving export capacity and integrating small and medium-sized enterprises into global markets.
In 2024 alone, Ghana’s exports to the United States under AGOA reached approximately $1.2 billion, according to data from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.
Key export categories included apparel, cocoa products, and processed agricultural goods. “These trade flows are more than mere statistics,” the Minister stressed, and that “they reflect the livelihoods, dignity, and empowerment of Ghanaian workers, especially women and young people.”
Madam Gomashie commended the U.S. for its continued support to Ghana’s development goals, citing bilateral development assistance through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as an example of sustained cooperation.
“In 2024, USAID committed approximately $150 million in bilateral development assistance to Ghana,” she said, adding that “This funding is allocated to various sectors, including health, agriculture and education, with a focus on improving maternal and child health, enhancing food security and expanding access to clean water and sanitation.”
She highlighted the broader scope of U.S.-Ghana cooperation, including the 2023 U.S.-Ghana Business Expo held in Accra, providing a valuable platform for strengthening business-to-business linkages and boosting trade and investment flows.
The Minister also cited technical and financial assistance from the United States to Ghana’s fisheries sector, support to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, and investments of over $2 million in northern Ghana to empower women and youth and promote cultural expression as further evidence of a dynamic and multifaceted partnership.
“Our relationship is grounded in shared values of democracy, good governance and mutual respect,” Madam Gomashie said, adding that “It is reinforced through strong people-to-people connections and robust economic cooperation.”
Mr Rolf Olson, Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Accra, emphasized the strong and evolving partnership between the two nations.
“Together, we have built a health infrastructure in Ghana that has saved millions of lives and prevented the spread of communicable diseases throughout the West African region,” he said.
He added that cooperation between the two countries had also strengthened agriculture, trained civic and community leaders, and supported job creation through initiatives like AGOA.
Looking ahead, Mr Olson expressed optimism about growing economic ties, stating that “Together, we can create increased prosperity for both our nations, building on our generations of connections between families and businesses.”
He said the U.S. was committed to fostering private sector-led growth in Ghana’s key sectors, including energy and mining, and emphasized the importance of favourable investment conditions for U.S. companies eager to expand in Ghana.
Ghana’s gold reserves have surged to 32.99 tonnes as of June 2025, reflecting a sustained upward trajectory in the Bank of Ghana’s strategic effort to bolster financial stability and diversify foreign reserves.
According to new data released by the central bank, the latest figure represents a significant jump from 31.37 tonnes in April and 32.16 tonnes in May. It also marks a nearly fourfold increase from the 8.78 tonnes recorded in May 2023.
The consistent rise highlights the Bank of Ghana’s deliberate push to deepen its gold holdings, part of a broader plan to reduce the country’s reliance on traditional foreign currencies such as the U.S. dollar.
As Africa’s leading gold producer, Ghana has stepped up its formalisation of the small-scale mining sector to ensure more domestically produced gold is retained for national development.
The Bank of Ghana’s gold accumulation drive mirrors a global shift, as central banks worldwide increasingly adopt gold as a safeguard against currency instability and geopolitical risk.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sparked laughter and surprise in Ghana’s Parliament on Thursday when he revealed that India has more than 2,500 registered political parties, a remark that quickly became the most talked-about moment of his address.
“I repeat, 2,500 political parties,” Mr Modi said with a smile, pausing as murmurs of disbelief spread across the chamber.
His unexpected revelation was met with laughter from Ghanaian lawmakers, including Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, who later echoed the figure, prompting another round of chuckles from both Members of Parliament and the visiting dignitary.
The moment of shared humour underscored the scale and complexity of India’s democracy; an example Mr Modi used to highlight his country’s commitment to pluralism, dialogue, and inclusion. “India is the mother of democracy,” he said, addressing the House in English. “True democracy promotes discussion and debate. It unites people, supports dignity and promotes human rights.”
Switching briefly to Hindi, he added, “Hamare liye loktantra system nahi, sanskaar hai,” which he translated as, “For us, democracy is not just a system, it is a part of our fundamental values.”
Mr Modi’s comments were part of a broader speech that emphasised India’s democratic ethos, shaped by vast diversity. “Twenty different parties governing different states, 22 official languages, thousands of dialects; this is the India that works,” he said. “This is also the reason that people who have come to India have always been welcomed with open hearts.”
He added that the same openness enables Indians to adapt and thrive wherever they go around the world.
The Prime Minister’s address was part of his official state visit to Ghana—the first by an Indian Prime Minister in over three decades, as part of a five-nation diplomatic tour. The lighthearted reference to India’s high number of political parties provided a memorable moment in an otherwise formal occasion, illustrating the scale of India’s democratic framework while drawing an affectionate reaction from his Ghanaian hosts.
After his speech, Mr Modi exchanged greetings and handshakes with MPs, wrapping up a visit that many lawmakers described as both engaging and illuminating.
His next stops include Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil for the BRICS Summit, and Namibia; each visit part of India’s effort to deepen ties with countries across Africa and Latin America.
Dambai (O/R), July 4, GNA- The River Oti Ferry has resumed operations after a brief period of repairs, bringing much needed relief to hundreds of stranded vehicles and passengers in the Krachi East Municipality.
The Ferry, operated by the Volta Lake Transport Company (VLT), was out of service due to a technical fault, causing significant disruptions to travel and trade in the area.
The breakdown had resulted in long queues of cargo trucks and passengers on both sides of the river, with many forced to wait for hours and days.
The resumption of pontoon services has brought temporary relief to these individuals, allowing them to continue their journeys.
While the pontoon’s return to operation is welcome news, passengers are calling for a more permanent solution to the transportation challenges in the area.
Some passengers engaged by the Ghana News Agency (GNA), believe that the government must construct a bridge over the River to alleviate current dangers.
They believed this solution would not only improve safety but also enhance the efficiency of travel and trade in the region.
The River Oti pontoon’s resumption of operations is a positive development, but the conversation about a long-term solution continues among stakeholders.
Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader in Parliament, has cautioned the New Patriotic Party Minority Caucus against politicizing the Electoral Commission’s decision to rerun parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency.
The Minority had criticized the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision, describing it as unfair and unjust, and is calling for the EC to be summoned before Parliament to explain the basis for the rerun.
Commenting on the matter on the Floor of the House on Thursday, Ayariga said, “I don’t know why you are afraid. Why are you afraid? Let us not try to politicize this and say that just because a national chairman of a political party made a statement, the EC is intimidated.”
He urged for calm and objectivity in handling the matter.
The EC has cited disputes over the authenticity of the December 7, 2024, election results as the reason for its decision to rerun the elections.
Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to seek legal redress to restrain the EC from conducting the rerun in the affected polling stations.

play videoA photo collage of Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC and Dr Hanna Louisa Bisiw-Kotei
The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has alleged that the Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund, Dr Hanna Louisa Bisiw-Kotei, has been warned by her party the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to stay away from her anti-illegal mining operations.
According to Abronye, the National Women’s Organizer of the NDC has been given a clear ultimatum: either keep her job by ceasing her fight against illegal mining (galamsey) or risk losing her position entirely.
He claims that her ongoing efforts to clamp down on galamsey activities, particularly in forest reserves, fall outside her official responsibilities.
Abronye further stated that this alleged warning followed Dr Bisiw-Kotei’s public disclosure that out of 40 excavators seized during her anti-galamsey operations, 33 went missing while in police custody.
Speaking on his Ohiani TV programme on July 2, 2025, Abronye alleged that the NDC government has allowed its members involved in galamsey to continue their illegal mining activities without hindrance.
“Hanna Bisiw-Kotei has been warned to stay away from the forest in her fight against galamsey. They said that is not the job she was given, and if she doesn’t listen and goes into the forest again, she will lose her job.
“They said she has embarrassed the government by revealing to the public that the seized excavators have gone missing,” Abronye alleged.
He also claimed that the Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, has similarly been cautioned to abandon his initial plans to combat illegal mining.
“Ibrahim Murtala said on TV3 that he would fight galamsey, but he has been warned that if he tries, he will face the consequences. Have you heard him mention galamsey again since then?” Abronye questioned.

GhanaWeb Special: The gold market that fuels galamsey
The Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) gold reserves have climbed to 32.99 tonnes as of June 30, 2025, underscoring the central bank’s sustained strategic push to fortify the nation’s foreign reserves and monetary stability framework.
According to new data released by the central bank, the latest figure represents a significant jump from 31.37 tonnes in April and 32.16 tonnes in May.
It also marks a nearly fourfold increase from the 8.78 tonnes recorded in May 2023.
The central bank’s reserves accumulation has been largely driven by its Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, a policy initiative designed to strengthen foreign exchange reserves, boost investor confidence, enhance currency stability, and create a more conducive environment for foreign direct investment and economic growth.
The strategic shift forms part of broader efforts to reduce dependence on traditional reserve assets such as U.S. Treasury securities.
The central bank’s gold reserves accumulation comes against the backdrop of tightening global financial conditions, currency volatility, and heightened geopolitical risks.

Barcelona fans made graphics showing Nico (R) was moving to Barcelona
Barcelona fans are reeling, and the football world is having a field day after Nico Williams blindsided the Catalan giants by signing a shock new deal with Athletic Bilbao until 2035, on Friday, July 4, 2025.
For weeks, Barça fans had flooded social media with graphics of Nico in a Blaugrana shirt, drooling over fantasy line-ups featuring the explosive winger alongside Lamine Yamal and Lewandowski under Hansi Flick.
Some even took Lamine’s Instagram hints as proof the deal was done. But when the time came, Nico ripped up the dream and declared San Mamés his forever home, leaving Barcelona humiliated for a second summer in a row.
As such, the winger’s dramatic snub has given rival supporters the perfect chance to mock them for living in a fantasy world that never came true.
They believe Barcelona made a fool of themselves, got played by Nico for a better deal, and let their own hype get embarrassingly ahead of reality.
They wasted no time taking to social media to troll Barcelona for the failed move.
“Damn Barcelona is a joke, I thought they would sign him this summer,” scoffed a fan.
“Didn’t Griezmann do something similar lol,” another laughed, pointing to Barça’s infamous past transfer circus.
“Thought he already joined Barça through Lamine IG story??” wrote a staunch Madrid fan, mocking the overblown fan hype.
Others summed it up bluntly: “Admit it: Barcelona’s pursuit of Nico Williams two years in a row has been humiliating.”
In the end, Nico’s decision to “listen to his heart” left Barcelona’s transfer plans, and online fantasy line-ups in tatters.
His release clause has now soared, making a future swoop even harder for cash-strapped Barça, who may be forced to pivot to new targets like Marcus Rashford.
For now, rival fans are relishing the chaos, gleefully reminding Barcelona that football dreams don’t always follow the graphics.

Former Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah-Boateng, has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to put aside individual interests and work collectively toward winning power in the 2028 general elections.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s show, Mr. Asamoah-Boateng reminded party faithful that the NPP is “a united family, not an individual enterprise,” urging them to build a collective consciousness and consensus for the party’s future.
He revealed that the party has conducted a detailed post-election report to understand the reasons behind its 2024 electoral defeat.
“We know our flaws now and have received recommendations, especially on strengthening our grassroots and addressing the monetization of our politics,” he said.
Asamoah-Boateng emphasized that implementing these reforms will be critical to repositioning the NPP for a comeback.
“We all need to be patient and work together. Victory in 2028 is possible if we unite,” he added.
According to Citinewsroom report on July 4, 2025, Ghanaian fashion is making remarkable waves both locally and internationally, as designers blend centuries-old cultural motifs with contemporary styles, creating a vibrant tapestry that tells Ghana’s story through fabric and form.
From the bustling streets of Accra to the runways of London and New York, Ghana’s fashion scene is thriving. At the heart of this renaissance is the timeless Kente cloth — a handwoven fabric originally reserved for royalty in the Ashanti Kingdom. Today, designers are reinventing Kente, pairing its bold patterns with modern silhouettes that appeal to a younger, global audience.
“We’re seeing Kente blazers, jumpsuits, even bridal gowns that marry tradition with modern flair,” says Ama Serwaa, a fashion entrepreneur based in Kumasi. “It’s more than fashion — it’s cultural diplomacy.”
In Accra, boutiques and markets teem with vibrant Ankara prints, intricately embroidered smocks, and beaded accessories that highlight Ghana’s rich artistic heritage. Fashion events like Glitz Africa Fashion Week and Accra Fashion Week continue to draw international attention, featuring models and buyers from Nigeria, the UK, the US, and beyond.
Local designers are also pushing sustainable fashion. Brands such as Studio 189, co-founded by Ghanaian-American Abrima Erwiah and actress Rosario Dawson, champion ethical production by employing local artisans and using eco-friendly processes. This aligns with Ghana’s growing tourism appeal, as visitors increasingly seek authentic experiences, from food to fashion.
“Ghanaian fashion is now a magnet for tourism,” says Kwaku Nkrumah, a tour operator in Cape Coast. “People come for the beaches and castles but leave with suitcases full of handmade clothing.”
The government has also taken note. Initiatives under the Ghana Tourism Authority aim to package fashion as part of the country’s creative economy, hoping to replicate the success of the “Year of Return” campaign which saw thousands of diasporans visiting Ghana.
India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has paid tribute to Ghana’s democratic credentials and called for a deepening of bilateral ties between India and Ghana.
Addressing Parliament earlier today, Prime Minister Modi praised Ghana’s resilience and democratic progress, saying, “It is a privilege to be in Ghana, a land that radiates the spirit of democracy, dignity and resilience.”
The event attracted members of the Council of State, diplomats, civil society groups, and Ghana’s Indian community. He told the lawmakers that Ghana stands as “a beacon of inspiration for the entire African continent.”
Mr. Modi, who is on a state visit, said his presence in Ghana was not only to honour the country’s legacy but also to reaffirm the shared values between the two nations.
“As the representative of the world’s largest democracy, I bring with me the goodwill and greetings of 1.4 billion Indians,” he said.
The Prime Minister expressed gratitude for the national honour conferred on him by President John Dramani Mahama during a ceremony on Wednesday evening.
“I will always cherish that moment,” he said, dedicating the award to “the enduring friendship and shared values that bind India and Ghana.”
Prime Minister Modi also paid tribute to one of India’s foremost statesmen, Dr. Swami Ankur Maharaj, describing him as a visionary whose ideals continue to shape India’s democratic aspirations. Quoting Maharaj, he reminded Parliament that “the forces that unite us are intrinsic and greater than the superimposed influences that keep us apart.”
He noted that both India and Ghana share painful colonial histories but have emerged stronger, building nations rooted in freedom, unity, and dignity.
“Our spirits have always remained free and fearless,” he said, and continued, “Our friendship is sweeter than your famous sugarloaf pineapple.”
The Indian leader stressed the importance of democracy as both a system and a cultural identity. “India is the mother of democracy. For us, democracy is not merely a system, it is a part of our fundamental values,” he said.
Citing India’s vast diversity – over 2,500 political parties, 22 official languages, and thousands of dialects – he emphasized inclusiveness and pluralism as pillars of Indian society.
Mr. Modi also used the occasion to call for urgent reforms in global governance to reflect current realities.
He warned that existing international institutions are struggling to respond to modern crises including pandemics, climate change, and terrorism. “The changing circumstances demand credible and effective reforms in global governance,” he stressed, reiterating India’s commitment to giving a stronger voice to the Global South.
Highlighting achievements from India’s presidency of the G20, Mr. Modi noted with pride that the African Union was admitted as a permanent member under India’s leadership. “Progress cannot come without giving voice to the Global South,” he asserted.
He also reiterated India’s global philosophy rooted in compassion and inclusivity, quoting a Sanskrit phrase meaning: “May all be happy, may all be free from illness, may all feel what is auspicious, may no one suffer in any way.”
Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthen ties with Ghana, announcing, “With President Mahama, we have decided to elevate our ties to a comprehensive partnership.”
Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has condemned the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to hold a rerun of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election.
The minority leader described the move as unfair and unjust.
According to Afenyo Markin, the EC leadership have caved into threats of removal and is prioritising their jobs over the country’s democracy.
The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has publicly denounced the actions of a staff member captured in a viral video clashing with a Level 100 female student over dress code enforcement.
The incident, which sparked widespread outrage on social media, prompted an immediate investigation by university management, who labelled the staff’s behaviour as “unacceptable” and reaffirmed their commitment to student dignity.
In a press release issued on Thursday, UPSA stated, “As a professional university whose core values are integrity, respect, and service, UPSA holds the dignity and well-being of every student as paramount and reaffirms that no staff member has the right to mistreat any student under any circumstances.”
The Vice-Chancellor personally apologised to the affected student, while the implicated staff member submitted a written apology. The student also expressed regret for her conduct in a letter to management.
The altercation occurred just days after UPSA intensified dress code enforcement to curb “indecent dressing” on campus. A memo from the Office of the Dean of Students, dated 30 June 2025, warned that a task force would bar students wearing shorts, slippers, tracksuits, or visible piercings from lecture halls starting 1 July.
However, some students accused the task force of unfairly targeting Level 100 students, alleging that senior peers were exempted.
UPSA acknowledged the backlash, announcing a review of enforcement protocols and additional training for compliance teams to align with “integrity, respect, and service.”
The university defended its dress code as a non-negotiable policy designed to instil corporate professionalism, citing its alumni’s career success as proof of its value.
While pledging to uphold the policy, UPSA assured stakeholders that future enforcement would prioritise civility.
“The incident has been addressed holistically,” the statement concluded, emphasising its dedication to a “safe, respectful, and professional” environment.
The video continues to fuel debate online, with critics questioning the enforcement methods and supporters backing the university’s stance on discipline.
The 2024 Tourism Report by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) revealed that Ghana welcomed 1,288,804 international visitors in 2024, representing a 12% year-on-year increase as the country maintained its status as one of West Africa’s top travel destinations.
According to the report 2.43% of these visitors came for business, making it the leading reason for travel to Ghana last year.
Study or teaching recorded (7,06%), visits to family and friends (22.29%), and holidays or vacations (22.15%) showing a near-even distribution across the top four travel motivations.
Other reasons included conferences, cultural events, sports, and transit.
The majority of international arrivals which were over 1.13 million entered the country through Kotoka International Airport, while Aflao, Elubo, and Paga also served as notable land entry points.
In terms of visitor origin, the United States led with 137,862 arrivals, followed by Nigeria with 111,581, and the United Kingdom with 52,845.
These three countries accounted for a significant share of Ghana’s inbound traffic, reinforcing the country’s strong ties to the diaspora and business communities abroad.
A striking 88% of international respondents described Ghana as an “ideal tourism destination,” citing Ghanaian hospitality (94%), cultural heritage (39%), local cuisine (28%), and safety (39%) as key attributes that shaped their experiences.
The report also indicated that visitor satisfaction was equally strong, with 78% rating their overall experience as excellent, and high scores recorded for tour guide services, restaurants, wildlife attractions, and historical sites such as forts and castles.

From L to R: Agradaa, Empress Gifty and Obiri Boahen
Legal practitioner Obiri Boahen has stated that the 15-year jail sentence handed to Nana Agradaa, will not stop gospel singer Empress Gifty from pursuing her defamation case against the evangelist.
Speaking in an interview on Okay FM with Nana Romeo on July 3, 2025, the lawyer explained that even though Agradaa is to serve prison time for defrauding by false pretence and charlatanic advertisement, that does not mean other legal cases involving her will be paused.
“Empress Gifty still has a case, and regardless of whether Agradaa goes to prison, it will not affect Empress’ case against her. Empress can proceed with the prosecution even in Agradaa’s absence,” Obiri Boahen said.
He clarified that the court is not expected to wait for Agradaa to finish her prison sentence before allowing Empress Gifty’s case to continue.
According to him, the law allows court proceedings to go on whether or not an accused person is physically present.
“On the day of the hearing, if Agradaa is needed in court, the prosecution will still go ahead. The court will not delay Empress Gifty’s case just because Agradaa is in prison. There’s no law in Ghana that says cases should stop because someone is serving time,” he added.
Obiri Boahen also pointed out that if there are other court cases against Agradaa in different circuit courts, those cases will still continue.
He said in such situations, the court can issue a warrant for the prison authorities to bring Agradaa to court.
“If Agradaa has other cases in different courts, those hearings will not be cancelled. If her presence is required, the court can ask that she be transported from prison to attend the proceedings,” he explained.
Lawyer Obiri Boahen has clarified that Empress Gifty cannot be asked to move her defamation case to a different court just because it may be closer to Agradaa’s prison.
He explained that Agradaa’s lawyer can submit an application to the Chief Justice to consider her incarceration when handling the case.
“One cannot request that Empress Gifty move her case to another court, because that court might be closer to Agradaa’s prison location. The only way to accommodate Agradaa’s situation would be for her lawyer to submit an application to the Chief Justice, explaining that his client is currently incarcerated,” he added.

Constitutional lawyer Raymond Bidema is urging the legal team of controversial evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, to file an urgent appeal against what he describes as a harsh and excessive 15-year jail sentence handed down by the Accra Circuit Court.
Agradaa was convicted of defrauding by false pretence, charlatanic advertisement, and obtaining money under false pretences; charges that stem from a well-publicized incident in October 2022.
Speaking on StarrToday with Ekow Boakye, Lawyer Bidema stressed the importance of scrutinizing the court’s ruling.
“There is always the possibility that a judge may err in delivering a judgment. As a lawyer, once you identify an error in a judgment that has been delivered, it is your duty to file an appeal to seek justice for your client. It is far better to ensure that an innocent person is set free than to allow them to be wrongly imprisoned. Convicting an innocent party is unjust and goes against the principles of a democratic society,” he said.
He further noted that if the defense team believes the judge’s conclusion is not supported by the evidence, “then the right course of action is to pursue an appeal to have the accused person discharged.”
Meanwhile, the husband of Pastor Angel Asiamah has expressed unwavering support for the incarcerated Agradaa, vowing to stand by the marital vows they made.
Mitigation Plea
Counsel for Nana Agradaa, Richard Asare Baffour, pleaded for mercy, citing her role as a mother of five, including a 24-year-old university student and a three-year-old child.
He urged the court to consider a non-custodial sentence, stating that Nana Agradaa had been present in court throughout the trial and had shown remorse.
Aggravating Factors:
The prosecution, led by ASP Emmanuel Haligah, highlighted aggravating factors, including premeditation, the prevalence of charlatanic advertisements, and the impact on victims.
He noted that Nana Agradaa was not a first-time offender, having been convicted of a similar offense in 2021, and urged the court to impose a sentence that would serve as a deterrent to others.
Brief Facts: According to the brief facts of the case, the accused, Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, is the Founder of Heaven Way Champions International Ministry, Weija, and resides at Weija, Accra.
On October 10, 2022, the complainants reported to the police that the accused demanded and received sums of money from them under the pretext of giving them various sums of money in return.
Investigations established that on October 5, 2022, the accused advertised on Today’s TV and other social media platforms that she was organizing an all-night service on October 7, 2022, at Heaven Way Champions International Ministry, where she would share an amount of GH¢300,000.00 with all participants who needed money to fund their business or pay rent.
The accused displayed bundles of money during the advertisement and encouraged members of the public to attend the service for a share of the money.
Due to the false representation made in the advertisements, complainants and other members of the public attended the all-night service, where they were directed to form groups and pay various sums of money.
The accused promised to give each group a specific amount of money, but after obtaining the money, she failed to fulfill her promise and left the complainants stranded.
Further investigations established that the accused undertook the charlatanic advertisement with the intent to defraud unsuspecting complainants.
The accused admitted to the allegations during interrogations, leading to her arraignment before the court.

Sam Aggrey is the Executive Secretary of the Food and Beverage Association of Ghana
The Food and Beverage Association of Ghana (FABAG) has raised concerns over the GH¢1 fuel tax expected to rollout of July 16, 2025, warning that it could derail efforts to reduce the cost of goods and services.
According to the Association’s Executive Secretary, Sam Aggrey, the decision to raise the fuel tax to GH¢1 is ill-timed and unnecessary.
He explained that the government introduced the tax to help offset rising electricity costs, but questioned the logic behind it, noting that the recent strengthening of the cedi has already created a financial advantage for the government.
“Recently they are introducing the petroleum tax which has been raised to GH¢1. It’s not necessary, because we need to look at the cost. The reason why they are imposing that is to raise money to fill that gap of electricity cost that is going up. We need to consider the overall cost impact. This tax isn’t needed right now,” he said.
He argued that the fuel tax hike would lead to increased transport costs, which would eventually be reflected in higher prices of goods on the market.
“Raising fuel prices means it costs more to move products from place to place, which directly affects final prices. That completely undermines our efforts to bring prices down,” he stated.
He also stressed that in the absence of a price control regime, transportation costs play a major role in determining product prices across the country.

DSTV subscribers in Ghana may soon benefit from a reduction in subscription fees, as the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam George, prepares to hold a crucial meeting with both the Ghanaian and South African teams of the service provider over subscription rates.
The Minister is firm in his stance that DSTV’s pricing must reflect prevailing economic conditions, and has described the upcoming discussions as critical to achieving pricing reforms in the interest of consumers.
Sam George said the move forms part of the government’s broader push to ensure fairness in digital service pricing amid ongoing concerns over cost burdens on households.
“We will use the power of the state to protect the citizens of the state. I am clear in my mind that the meeting will not come to an end without an agreed reduction in the price.
“I have seen the attempt by the South African management to say that when you buy a package, they should upgrade you to the next one. We are grateful, but that is not what we want. We want a price reduction,” the minister demanded during a press briefing on Thursday, July 3, 2025.
