Why Thousands Of Kenyan Men Quietly Skip Sunday Church Services While Their Wives And Children Go
Every Sunday as women and children prepare for church many Kenyan men stay behind. Some head to work or business while others simply remain at home. This long-standing imbalance in congregations has become a familiar worry for pastors and church leaders.
Work and family responsibilities rank among the top reasons. Many men work long hours or run businesses that demand attention even on weekends. Others put providing for their households first and see church as secondary to economic survival.
Cultural expectations of masculinity also play a role. Some men feel church environments are too feminine because of the programmes and music. They also dislike the emotional expression that does not match traditional ideas of strength. The phrase too macho for God captures this discomfort.
Disappointment with the church itself is another factor. Allegations of hypocrisy among leaders and an overemphasis on tithing and prosperity messages have driven some men away. Others have faced judgment or exclusion. A sense of not belonging is common especially among younger men who grew up in church but later felt alienated.
Alcohol abuse also keeps many men from Sunday services. This is particularly the case in regions such as Mount Kenya. Church leaders there report congregations dominated by women and children and older men.
Some men rely on the prayers of their wives instead of attending themselves. They believe their families already represent them before God. Others prefer a personal faith or alternative fellowships that feel more relevant.
Churches that have introduced men-focused programmes have seen better engagement. Practical discussions and brotherhood activities have helped draw men back. This shows the gap is not inevitable.
Addressing work pressures and cultural barriers remains key. Changing the perception that church is unwelcoming to men will also help more of them return to the pews.
