According to Sam George, Ghana, with a population of just over 35 million people, has more than 700 radio stations and about 120 television stations. He believes the figures are unusually high when compared with the country’s population and the demands of the media industry.

The Communications Minister expressed his concern over what he described as an overcrowded media landscape, arguing that the sheer number of broadcasting stations raises questions about the sustainability and effectiveness of the industry.

“I don’t understand why a country like Ghana, with just over 35 million people, has over 700 radio stations and 120 television stations. It’s pure madness and media tyranny,” Sam George said.

His comments are expected to generate further debate about the state of Ghana’s broadcasting industry, particularly regarding regulation, competition, media sustainability and the quality of content available to the public.

Ghana has a vibrant media environment, with radio and television playing a major role in informing citizens, shaping public opinion and providing platforms for political and social discussions. However, the rapid expansion of broadcasting outlets has also raised concerns about competition for advertising revenue, professional standards and the financial sustainability of media organisations.
