There Is Money — Finish Our Market In 2027 Budget Or We Will Boycott — Takoradi MP Tells Government

Member of Parliament for Takoradi, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, has sent a strong warning to government.

He says there is enough money in Ghana, and government must use it to finish the abandoned Takoradi Market Circle project in the 2027 Budget.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament ahead of the 2027 Budget presentation on November 12, the MP said he will boycott the budget with his constituents if the market is not included.

The Takoradi Market Circle redevelopment started in 2020 under former President Akufo-Addo It was funded with a €48 million loan from Italy, with Contracta Costruzioni Italia as the contractor.

According to Darko-Mensah, the project is 80% complete — some reports say 82% — and only 20% is left to finish.

But he says under the NDC government, nothing has been done.

“Zero percent was done in 2025, and another zero percent has been done in 2026. We believe there is enough money, and I would be happy if an allocation for the completion of the Takoradi Market Circle project is reflected in the upcoming 2027 Budget Statement,” he said.

He says traders are suffering, the economy of Takoradi is suffering, and the market is very important to the people of the Western Region.

The market was supposed to have over 2,400 shops and modern facilities to turn Takoradi into a trading hub.

Now the site is abandoned, traders are stranded, and no money was put in the 2025 and 2026 budgets to finish it.

The MP says if government fails again in 2027, they will have no choice but to boycott the budget presentation.

For the people of Takoradi, they want action, not excuses.
