Temitope Muraina: Building legacy as Nollywood’s master costumier
In the fast-paced, high-stake environment of Nigerian filmmaking, compelling character development requires far more than snappy dialogue and strong acting.
It demands an undeniable visual identity, a delicate art form that professional costumier, Kafayat Temitope Muriana has quietly perfected over nearly two decades.
From her early days learning under industry veterans to clothing Nollywood legends, Temitope’s rise reflects a relentless dedication to bringing script characters to life through the power of wardrobe.
The academic & technical foundations of a craft
Temitope’s journey into the film industry dates back to 2007. Recognising her raw creative talent, Producer Kehinde Adeyemi encouraged her to ground her passion with formal education—a decision that set her career on a disciplined path.
(LASU), Ojo, graduating in 2011 before completing her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployment in Anambra State in 2014. Driven by a clear vision, she returned to the screen sector in 2016 to undergo three years of intensive professional training under veteran designer, Lola Awe. It was during this period that she mastered the technical mechanics of wardrobe composition, colour theory, and visual storytelling.
Though she initially toyed with the idea of acting, her rigorous training clarified her true calling.
“I discovered that my greatest passion was behind the scenes, particularly costume design,” Temitope reflects. “I wanted to contribute to storytelling by transforming characters through costumes, appearance, and subtle details.”
From Wardrobe Assistant to Nollywood’s Go-To Designer
Stepping out as an independent costumier in 2021 proved to be her ultimate turning point. Temitope rapidly built a reputation for consistency, earning screen credits on major productions, including ‘The Wrongs’—produced by Peju Johnson and directed by Azeez Ijaduade.
Her portfolio soon expanded to include high-profile collaborations with industry heavyweights such as Kazeem Omo Baba Oba, Tolu Elijah (Originator), and veteran filmmaker Abbey Lanre.
Dressing Nollywood royalty for the first time presented both a career milestone and a test of composure.
“It was an exciting and memorable experience,” she shares. “It challenged me to step up, deliver my absolute best, and reinforced the non-negotiable importance of professionalism, confidence, and strict attention to detail on set.”
Weathering set pressures and industry sacrifices
Building an enduring brand in Nollywood comes with severe demands. Managing tight production deadlines, maintaining strict continuity across multi-day shoots, and staying calm amidst set chaos require immense resilience.
”Becoming an independent costumier required patience, consistency, and the ability to build genuine trust with directors,” Temitope explains. “I always make sure I thoroughly understand the director’s vision before day one. That preparation allows me to stay calm even when unexpected emergency changes happen on set.”
Success has also required personal trade-offs.
The long, erratic hours of film production mean her personal social calendar often takes a backseat—a reality she accepts as part of the price of excellence.
Despite her rising profile in Nigeria, Temitope is not slowing down. Over the next five years, her ambition extends beyond domestic sets toward global co-productions, international film festivals, and structured mentorship programmes for rising crew members.
Her advice to emerging talent—whether in front of or behind the camera—is rooted in old-school discipline: “Don’t be in a hurry to become famous; take time to truly understand your craft. Talent is important, but discipline, consistency, and professionalism will take you much further. Believe in yourself, start small, and respect the process.”
