Shabana Climb To Fourth After 3-2 Victory Over Mombasa United
Shabana FC climbed into fourth position in the FKF Premier League standings after defeating Mombasa United 3-2 in a dramatic encounter at Mbaraki Sports Club on Saturday.
The Kisii-based side collected their second victory of the campaign to reach nine points from six matches, moving ahead of Mara Sugar and 3K FC on goal difference.
Derrick Oketch scored the decisive goal with seven minutes remaining after Mombasa United had fought back from two goals down to level the contest.
Shabana had taken control shortly before half-time when Brian Ogutu found the net in the 44th minute. Kevin Omundi then extended their advantage shortly before the hour mark, putting the visitors in a commanding position.
However, the hosts responded through Dennis Mabeya, who converted a 70th-minute penalty after Adeyemi Mogbedemu was brought down inside the area.
Mombasa continued pushing and found an equaliser in the 81st minute when Junior Shentembo headed home from a corner, raising hopes of their first league victory.
Their celebrations were short-lived, though, as Oketch restored Shabana’s lead two minutes later to secure maximum points.
The victory represents an important turnaround for coach Ahmed Fathi, whose team had gone four consecutive league matches without winning.
Shabana now occupy fourth place with nine points and a goal difference of +1. They trail third-placed AFC Leopards by one point.
Mombasa United remain bottom of the standings with just one point after six matches, leaving them still searching for their first victory of the season.
