Robert Alai Raises Questions Over Citizen TV’s Jacaranda Event Coverage

Political commentator and ODM-linked figure Robert Alai has raised questions about Citizen TV’s handling of coverage during a recent Jacaranda event held as ODM concluded its month of activities honouring the late Raila Odinga.

In remarks that have sparked debate among supporters and political observers, Alai claimed that Citizen TV had been contracted to livestream the event and received payment for several hours of coverage. He alleged that the station did not broadcast the entire programme as expected and later removed the livestream from its YouTube platform.

The claims have generated discussion about the relationship between political organisations, media houses and paid event coverage. However, the allegations regarding payment arrangements and the broadcaster’s reasons for ending or removing the livestream would require independent verification.

Alai went further to express concern about what he described as changing media attitudes towards ODM. He suggested that some Luo-speaking audiences and ODM supporters should pay closer attention to developments within sections of the media, particularly outlets associated with Royal Media Services.

The outspoken politician also linked his concerns to broader political tensions in Kenya, claiming that some media decisions could be influenced by shifting political interests. These remarks reflect the increasingly heated debate surrounding media coverage and political realignments as different leaders and parties compete for influence.

Media houses, on the other hand, often make editorial and operational decisions based on programming schedules, technical considerations, contractual terms and editorial policies. For this reason, the removal or interruption of a livestream does not automatically prove political bias without clear evidence.

Alai’s comments nevertheless highlight an important issue: political parties and their supporters expect transparency when major public events are covered by influential media platforms. As Kenya’s political landscape continues to evolve, questions about fairness, editorial independence and equal access to media attention are likely to remain significant.

The controversy surrounding the Jacaranda event is therefore likely to attract further public discussion, especially among ODM supporters seeking clarity on what happened to the livestream.
