Ramaphosa Reportedly Considers Quitting Presidency After Second Election Setbacks

President Cyril Ramaphosa has reportedly raised the possibility of stepping down as African National Congress (ANC) president following the party’s disappointing performance in the 2024 national elections and the 2026 local government elections.

According to a report by the Sunday Times, Ramaphosa discussed the possibility of his departure with senior ANC leaders amid concerns about the party’s declining electoral support.

The ANC suffered a historic setback in the 2024 general elections when it failed to secure an outright parliamentary majority for the first time since the dawn of democracy in 1994. The outcome forced the governing party to negotiate a Government of National Unity with several political organisations.

The party has subsequently faced further electoral challenges in the 2026 local government elections, with its support declining in several municipalities across the country.

The latest developments have reportedly prompted discussions within the ANC about its leadership and the direction of the organisation ahead of future political contests.

However, Ramaphosa’s reported consideration of resignation does not mean that he has formally decided to leave the position. No official announcement confirming his departure has been made.

The Sunday Times report has added to growing discussions about the ANC’s leadership and its response to successive electoral setbacks.
