Power Outage: NNPCL, Grid Operator Trade Blame As Nigerians Remain In Darkness
According to a report by DAILY POST on Sunday November 2026, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has faulted claims by the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) that inadequate gas supply contributed to the recent decline in electricity generation across the country.
NNPCL insisted that its gas pipeline infrastructure remains fully operational, adding that there are no obstructions preventing the transportation of gas to power stations nationwide.
The company explained that records from its subsidiary, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC), showed no transportation challenges capable of accounting for the drop in power generation.
The disagreement followed NISO’s November 5 explanation that poor gas supply and reduced water levels at hydroelectric facilities were responsible for the decline in electricity output.
However, NNPCL rejected the gas shortage explanation, maintaining that Nigeria’s gas production had increased by about 10 per cent since the beginning of 2026.
According to the company, the improvement reflects ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to expand the country’s gas sector and maximise its economic potential.
NNPCL also emphasised the importance of reliable energy infrastructure and cooperation among stakeholders in addressing Nigeria’s electricity challenges.
The latest disagreement between the two organisations comes amid concerns over persistent power supply problems affecting households and businesses across the country.
