Ndlozi Hits Back at Malema, Questions EFF Leadership After Election Setback
Former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) spokesperson Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi has hit back at party leader Julius Malema following criticism over his decision not to participate in the 2026 Local Government Elections.
Malema had questioned Ndlozi’s decision to abstain from voting, describing it as abnormal and counter-revolutionary. However, Ndlozi has responded by shifting attention to the EFF’s declining electoral performance and challenging the party leader to take responsibility for the results.
Ndlozi highlighted the party’s declining national vote share, which fell from 10.3% in the 2021 elections to approximately 6.2% in 2026. This represents a loss of 4.1 percentage points.
He argued that the election figures speak for themselves and suggested that Malema should focus on understanding why the party is losing electoral support instead of questioning his personal decision not to vote.
Defending his position, Ndlozi maintained that voting is a constitutional right rather than a compulsory responsibility. He argued that choosing not to vote can also be a way for citizens to express dissatisfaction with the political parties and choices available to them.
He further stressed that political parties should work to earn the support of voters through their actions and performance rather than behaving as though people are automatically obligated to vote for them.
To reinforce his argument, Ndlozi referred to the political histories of former presidents Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki, pointing out that public support for political parties can change depending on their performance and track record in government.
The exchange has brought renewed attention to the differences between the former EFF colleagues, particularly regarding leadership, accountability and the reasons behind the party’s declining support at the polls.
It also raises questions about how the EFF intends to respond to its disappointing electoral performance and regain the confidence of South African voters.
