MK Party Demands Full Vote Recount in Emfuleni as DA Takes Early Lead

Protests outside the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Results Operations Center in Vanderbijlpark were sparked by the uMkhonto weSizwe Party’s (MKP) demand for a recount of ballots in Emfuleni Local Municipality after early election results showing the Democratic Alliance (DA) holding the lead.

Dissatisfied with the early results from the 2026 Local Government Elections, members of the MK Party gathered outside the results center on November 6, 2026, requesting a recount from the election administration.

According to reports, the MK Party’s expected election success was at odds with early results showing the DA ahead in Emfuleni, prompting the protest.

Due to the surprising numbers, some members of the MK Party are demanding that the (INEC) confirm the results before continuing with the counting.

The data that were available at the time of the protest actually reflected a tiny fraction of the total votes cast, since only about 5% of the votes had supposedly been tallied.

In spite of the slow pace in tallying votes, members of the MK Party voiced their concerns at the provincial results operations center of the IEC, demanding an audit of the process and a new round of tallying.

Authorities were keeping an eye on the crowd and were ready to keep the peace if things got out of hand, so the police were on high alert outside the venue.

Law enforcement’s presence brought attention to the delicate nature of the election results process, which is especially important since political parties are keeping a careful eye on preliminary data in towns where they do not yet have authority.

Located in the Gauteng province, Emfuleni is home to prominent political hotspots like Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging. Having control of the local government is especially crucial for competing political forms in the municipality because of the major governance and service-delivery problems.

We will carefully monitor the DA early lead as the IEC processes and verifies further election districts.

The preliminary findings, however, should not be taken as a definitive indicator of the outcome just yet, as only a small proportion of the votes have been tabulated.

The integrity of the voting process and compliance with electoral regulations are the responsibility of the IEC, which is also responsible for the correct handling of formal complaints and requests for recounts.
