Martin Kpebu Breaks Silence on His Relationship With Mahama’s NDC Government
Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has explained his decision to remain politically independent, arguing that accepting an appointment from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) could compromise his credibility and independence as a public-interest advocate.
Kpebu clarified that although he has supported the NDC on certain political and national issues, his position should not be interpreted as an indication of membership or allegiance to the party.
In a video sighted by GhanaWeb on November 7, 2026, the lawyer explained that maintaining his independence was necessary to ensure consistency in his advocacy and allow him to hold political leaders accountable without bias.
Kpebu, who was called to the Ghana Bar on October 5, 2007, also highlighted his 19 years in legal practice, noting that he had built his career without joining any political party.
He maintained that his professional experience had reinforced his belief in the importance of speaking the truth and preserving his independence rather than relying on political affiliations for opportunities or recognition.
The legal practitioner further argued that Ghana’s democratic development requires individuals who can remain politically neutral and scrutinise the actions of successive governments, regardless of their political affiliations.
He stressed that not every citizen should be aligned with a political party, adding that independent voices are necessary to ensure effective accountability and provide objective criticism of those in power.
“We can’t have a nation where all of us are politically aligned. Some people must stand in the middle,” he said.
