Jordan Ayew Breaks Goal Drought at Sheffield United as Charlton Deliver Late Blow
Ghana captain Jordan Ayew finally got his first goal for Sheffield United, but his moment of joy ended in disappointment after his side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic in the English Championship.
The experienced forward found the back of the net on Saturday, November 7, 2026, during Sheffield United’s visit to Charlton at The Valley. Although his goal brought his team back into the contest, a late strike from the home side denied them a point.
Charlton started the match strongly and took the lead in the 12th minute through Millenic Alli, who finished from distance after receiving a pass from Dan McNamara.
Sheffield United responded through Ayew, who showed his attacking instincts to level the score in the 25th minute.
The Ghanaian striker scored with a header from close range after Charlton goalkeeper Will Mannion failed to hold Kalvin Phillips’ free-kick. Ayew reacted quickly to the loose ball and sent it into the net, making the score 1-1.
The goal was an important moment for the 35-year-old, who joined Sheffield United in September after leaving Leicester City. It was his first goal for the club since arriving at Bramall Lane and ended a wait of 215 days for a club goal.
Ayew had already shown signs of danger early in the match. In the fourth minute, he attempted a low shot, but Charlton goalkeeper Mannion stopped the effort with his legs.
After the equaliser, both teams continued searching for another goal. Sheffield United created opportunities, but they could not find the breakthrough needed to take the lead.
The decisive moment came in the 79th minute when substitute Matty Godden scored for Charlton. He finished Millenic Alli’s cross just four minutes after coming on, giving the home team a 2-1 advantage.
Despite late efforts from Sheffield United, Charlton held on to secure all three points. Ayew was substituted in the 71st minute, before Godden scored the winning goal.
For Ayew, the result was disappointing, but his first Sheffield United goal offers a positive sign as he continues to settle into his new club.
