Government to Allocate GH¢10 Million for Media Development Fund – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will allocate GH¢10 million for the Media Development Fund, in a move aimed at supporting the growth and sustainability of Ghana’s media industry.

The announcement was made by the President as part of efforts to strengthen the media’s capacity to operate effectively and fulfil its role in the country’s democratic development. The fund is intended to provide financial support to media organisations and practitioners.

The GH¢10 million allocation signals the government’s recognition of the challenges facing the media sector and its willingness to invest in the industry’s development. The fund is expected to help address some of the resource constraints that media houses and journalists encounter in carrying out their work.

President Mahama’s announcement has been welcomed as a step towards improving the media landscape, with the expectation that the resources will be applied transparently and in ways that benefit the broader media ecosystem. Stakeholders will be looking to see how the fund is administered and which areas of the media receive support.

The allocation comes at a time when Ghana’s media industry faces pressures ranging from financing difficulties to the need to adapt to a rapidly changing digital environment. Support through the Media Development Fund could help media organisations invest in capacity building, technology, and professional development.

The President’s commitment of GH¢10 million to the fund is likely to generate discussion about how best to deploy the resources to achieve maximum impact. Media practitioners and organisations will be keen to engage with the fund’s management to ensure that it serves the intended purpose.

The announcement marks a significant moment for the media development agenda in Ghana, and its success will depend on effective implementation and accountability in the use of the allocated funds.
