Ghanaians React As Vetinary Officer In Bongo Appeals For Support To Curb Rabbies

According to a report by Citi FM today being Sunday, November 8, 2026, the Bongo District Veterinary Officer, Hamidu Sadat, has called on the government to dedicate a portion of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) to rabies prevention and control activities following the recording of five rabies-related deaths in the district.

He believes that providing financial support through the DACF would strengthen efforts by veterinary officers and local authorities to prevent the spread of the deadly disease and protect residents from its devastating consequences.

According to him, the five deaths recorded in the Bongo District highlight the urgent need for authorities to treat rabies prevention as a major public health priority. He stressed that without adequate funding, efforts to control the disease could remain limited, leaving more people vulnerable to infections.

Sadat explained that allocating resources from the District Assemblies Common Fund would help support essential interventions, including public education, vaccination campaigns and other preventive measures aimed at reducing the risk of rabies transmission.

He also emphasised the importance of strengthening collaboration between veterinary officers, district assemblies, community leaders and residents to ensure that cases of rabies are identified and addressed promptly.

Rabies is a deadly viral disease that affects the nervous system and can be transmitted to humans through the bites or scratches of infected animals, particularly dogs. The disease is almost always fatal once clinical symptoms develop, making early prevention and vaccination extremely important.

The Veterinary Officer’s appeal comes amid concerns over the five deaths recorded in the Bongo District, which have renewed calls for stronger measures to protect communities.

He believes that making rabies prevention a priority in district development funding would provide the necessary resources to tackle the disease and prevent further loss of lives.
