Gachagua Hit by Unexpected Power Blackout While Addressing Night Festival
A sudden power blackout interrupted former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s speech during the Ngemi Cia Watho cultural festival held at Thika Greens Golf Resort on Saturday night.
Gachagua was addressing guests at the second edition of the cultural and professional festival when the electricity suddenly flickered before the venue was plunged into darkness.
The unexpected interruption briefly brought his speech to a halt as attendees switched on their mobile phone torches to illuminate the venue.
The former Deputy President had been speaking about President William Ruto’s political dealings with leaders who had previously worked with him when the blackout occurred. He had also been discussing the responsibility of political leaders in the country’s current political situation.
The incident happened as the event brought together lawyers, politicians, entertainers and other guests from different parts of the country. The festival combined cultural celebrations, professional networking and political discussions.
Despite the interruption, the gathering continued, with guests later resuming the programme. The event featured music, cultural performances and entertainment, including a performance by Mugithi artiste KamaNu M’tuamwari.
Gachagua attended the festival alongside Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, whose presence attracted significant attention amid growing political engagements between the two leaders.
Sifuna and Gachagua have recently intensified discussions on opposition cooperation ahead of the 2027 General Election. Their appearance together at the festival further highlighted the emerging political relationship between the two leaders, who previously stood on opposite sides during Gachagua’s impeachment proceedings in 2024.
During the same gathering, Sifuna declared that he and Gachagua had reached an understanding to work together toward removing President Ruto from power in the 2027 elections.
The Nairobi Senator acknowledged their troubled political history but said the two leaders had chosen to put their differences aside in pursuit of a common political objective.
The Ngemi Cia Watho festival was organised by lawyers and legal professionals from the Mt Kenya region under the GEMA Watho Association. It seeks to celebrate cultural heritage while providing professionals with an opportunity to reconnect, network and discuss matters affecting the community.
The blackout added an unexpected moment to an event that had already attracted considerable political attention because of the presence of Gachagua and Sifuna.
