Fred Arocho explains viral moment restraining twin brother during FKF Meru chaos

Sports commentator Fred Arocho has explained the viral moment he was seen restraining his twin brother, Billy Arocho, during the chaotic Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Special General Meeting in Meru on Saturday, November 7, 2026.

A video circulating on social media showed Fred intervening as his brother appeared to be involved in a confrontation at the Three Steers Hotel, where the FKF SGM had been scheduled to take place.

Explaining the incident on Sunday morning, November 8, 2026, Fred said his intervention was simply an attempt to calm his brother and prevent the situation from escalating.

“My twin brother Billy had an altercation with someone in Meru, I had to come in as the BIG Brother to calm the situation,” Arocho said.

The dramatic scene unfolded against the backdrop of an already tense morning at the FKF meeting, which had been convened to deliberate on the conduct of seven members of the federation’s National Executive Committee (NEC), including Vice President McDonald Mariga.

The situation at the venue deteriorated before the meeting could begin, with police from the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) moving into the hotel as rival groups struggled to access the premises.

Hundreds of youths had gathered around the hotel, while heavily armed police officers were deployed to secure the venue. Mariga arrived at the hotel under RDU escort as tensions continued to rise.

The confrontation eventually escalated into the use of tear gas inside the meeting hall. Delegates who had already taken their seats were forced out as police attempted to disperse people from the venue.

FKF subsequently expressed concern over the police operation, saying the RDU intervention had disrupted the constitutional meeting before it could formally begin.

Mariga, on his part, alleged that some delegates aligned to his faction had been attacked and chased away while attempting to enter the venue. He claimed that more than 100 youths had occupied parts of the hotel and its surroundings.

The chaos came after an already volatile Friday, when a confrontation involving an FKF NEC member and other football officials was reported in Meru. The developments heightened fears that Saturday’s SGM could turn confrontational.

The meeting was eventually held amid the extraordinary security situation, with delegates proceeding to discuss the conduct of Mariga and six other NEC officials.

The seven officials, Mariga, Dan Shikanda, Robert Macharia, Gabriel Mghendi, Bernard Lagat, Collins Opiyo Kalee and Violet Kerubo Momanyi, were subsequently expelled by the General Assembly. They have since challenged both their removal and the manner in which the SGM was conducted, arguing that they were denied an opportunity to defend themselves.

For Fred Arocho, however, the moment that went viral was not about taking sides in the FKF power struggle.

It was, according to him, a family intervention.

His appearance in the video quickly attracted attention because Billy is not a stranger to high-pressure security environments. The two are identical twins, and Billy has previously been associated with VIP security and crowd management. Fred has himself publicly acknowledged their close relationship.

What began as another explosive moment in the increasingly bitter FKF leadership dispute therefore produced an unexpected viral image, a sports commentator stepping in to restrain his own twin brother.

And while the FKF battle in Meru continues to generate questions over security, due process and the conduct of the federation’s affairs, Arocho’s explanation is that his intervention was much simpler: he was acting as a brother trying to stop a confrontation from getting worse.
