“First goal for the Blades” – Jordan Ayew scores in Sheffield United’s 2-1 loss to Charlton
According to a report by Ghanaweb on Sunday, Nov 8, 2026, Ghana captain Jordan Ayew opened his scoring account for Sheffield United on Saturday, but his equaliser could not save the Blades from a 2-1 Championship defeat at Charlton Athletic.
The hosts struck first at The Valley, with Millenic Alli putting Charlton ahead in the 12th minute. Ayew responded for United with a header that levelled the contest and gave him his first goal since joining the club.
The match stayed finely balanced until late in the second half. With 11 minutes left, Matty Godden found the net to restore Charlton’s lead, and the Addicks held firm to close out the result.
Godden’s strike was his second of the season. It also carried real weight for Charlton, handing them their first league win since August 29 and ending a run of 11 league games without a victory. The result lifted them to 19th in the table, seven points clear of the relegation zone.
For Sheffield United, the loss brought an end to a four-match unbeaten run. It also dented their hopes of climbing the Championship standings, leaving them with more work to do in the weeks ahead.
Ayew was brought back into the starting line-up after the midweek win over Preston North End. He was joined by Liam Kitching and Kalvin Phillips, while Mark McGuinness, Jairo Riedewald and Tom Cannon were moved to the bench.
The Ghana international will take encouragement from finally getting off the mark for the Blades. Even so, the defeat means Sheffield United still have to find consistency as the season unfolds.
