EFCC: Pastor Adeboye Ordered RCCG to Refund Billions in Illicit Donations
According to Daily Post Nigeria, published on November 8, 2026, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has revealed that Pastor Enoch Adeboye ordered the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) to return billions of naira traced to the church as illicit donations.
Olukoyede made the disclosure while speaking at a public event on corruption and the church on Saturday. He alleged that some wealthy individuals and politicians had been using religious organisations to conceal money obtained through illegal activities.
The EFCC chairman explained that the commission traced some funds to RCCG and contacted Adeboye to inform him about its findings.
According to Olukoyede, the pastor did not argue with the commission or attempt to defend the individuals who made the donations. Instead, he reportedly called members of his team and instructed them to return the money.
“Return the money,” Olukoyede quoted Adeboye as saying.
He further explained that Adeboye maintained that the church should not keep money suspected to have come from unlawful sources.
Olukoyede also quoted the pastor as saying that if the money was not clean, the church would not retain it and that the government could decide what to do with the funds after they were returned.
The EFCC chairman said RCCG complied with the instruction and refunded the money to the commission. He described the amount as billions of naira but did not disclose the exact figure involved.
The disclosure has drawn attention to concerns about the use of religious institutions to conceal proceeds of crime. It also highlights the importance of examining the sources of large donations received by religious organisations.
However, Olukoyede’s account did not identify the individuals who made the donations or provide further details about the funds returned.
