DR Nasiphi Moya Cuts Power To Shoprite, SAPS,PRISONS AND NIGERIAN HIGH COMMISSION OVER Millions Owed
Tshwane Executive Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya has intensified the City of Tshwane’s revenue collection campaign, disconnecting electricity to several properties and institutions over outstanding municipal debt during the city’s βTshwane Ya Timaβ operation.
The operation reportedly targeted a wide range of consumers, including Shoprite-linked properties, hotels, South African Police Service (SAPS) facilities, correctional centres, State Information Technology Agency (SITA) offices, Transnet and Telkom sites.
Other properties affected reportedly included the Nigerian High Commission, Weskoppies Hospital, government buildings and private debtors.
The electricity disconnections form part of the city’s efforts to recover millions of rands owed by consumers and businesses, while putting pressure on defaulting account holders to settle their outstanding municipal bills.
According to the information provided, electricity was restored to the affected properties only after the outstanding amounts had been successfully paid to the municipality.
The operation sends a strong message that the city intends to enforce payment obligations regardless of whether the affected consumer is a private business, government institution or major public organisation.
However, the reported disconnections involving essential facilities, particularly police stations, correctional centres and healthcare institutions, raise questions about service continuity and the arrangements made to minimise disruption.
Moya’s revenue collection drive comes amid growing pressure on municipalities across South Africa to improve financial sustainability, recover unpaid accounts and ensure that consumers who settle their bills are not unfairly burdened by others who fail to pay.
The central message of the campaign is clear: municipal services come with financial responsibilities, and outstanding debts must be settled.
Tshwane Ya Tima is putting the spotlight on one of the biggest challenges facing local government: collecting the money owed to keep cities running.
