Brent Carelse Says Kaizer Chiefs Are on Right Track
Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Brent Carelse has offered an encouraging assessment of Kaizer Chiefs’ form, insisting there is plenty to build on despite their recent 2‑1 Soweto Derby defeat to Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium. The loss dropped Amakhosi to fifth in the Betway Premiership table, nine points behind second‑placed Pirates and ten adrift of log‑leaders Sundowns, but Carelse remains upbeat.
Speaking to KickOff, Carelse noted that Chiefs were the brighter side early on, creating several clear chances in the opening 30 minutes and looking capable of causing an upset. “I thought Chiefs were going to cause an upset because of the way they were playing,” he said. “They looked like a team that wanted to win, but unfortunately Pirates came back and took their opportunities — that was the difference.” He described the match as a fine showcase for South African football, even as he acknowledged Chiefs will feel they let the result slip.
Crucially, Carelse sees strong underlying progress. “There were a lot of positives. If they continue that way, stay consistent, and play like they started against Pirates, they will do well and have something to show at the end of the season.”
Attention now turns to the Carling Knockout Cup, where a win over Siwelele would bring Chiefs within reach of their first silverware of the campaign — and give tangible proof of the upward trajectory Carelse has identified.
