Ato Forson Says Ghana Must Break Decades-Long Cycle of Economic Crisis and Recovery
Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has called for a lasting change in the country’s approach to economic management, warning that the repeated pattern of crisis, recovery and complacency has continued to undermine national progress for decades.
He expressed concern that Ghana has consistently followed a cycle in which periods of economic difficulty are followed by recovery, celebration and a gradual return to practices that eventually create another crisis.
According to him, the country must learn from its past experiences and put measures in place to prevent the mistakes that have repeatedly affected its economic stability.
“Ghana’s problem has always been that we go through crisis, recover, celebrate, relax, and relapse. This cycle has persisted for decades, it must stop,” Dr. Ato Forson stated.
His remarks highlight the need for Ghana to move beyond short-term economic improvements and focus on maintaining stability over the long term. He suggested that recovering from an economic crisis should not be treated as the end of the country’s challenges, but rather as an opportunity to establish stronger systems and responsible policies.
The Finance Minister’s observation also draws attention to the importance of discipline in managing public finances, particularly after periods of economic recovery. Without sustained commitment to sound economic policies, improvements achieved through difficult reforms could be lost, leaving the country vulnerable to another downturn.
Ghana has experienced several periods of economic difficulty over the years, with successive governments facing challenges involving public debt, inflation, currency depreciation and pressure on national finances.
The statement therefore raises an important question about how the country can protect economic gains and avoid repeating mistakes that have contributed to previous crises.
Ato Forson’s call is for a shift towards consistent economic management, where recovery is supported by long-term planning, accountability and policies that can withstand changes in political leadership.
